Anyway, to make sure Xmas went OK I bought an Asante 1004AL wireless
11(b) router. Well, it works great, like everything else I've ever
got from Asante. I have some wire in my old plaster walls, so I put
it up high on the wall, in the center of the old house, and I was
still able to get a good signal 300 feet from the house. (so
everyone in the neighborhood or driving by can share).

That's good distance! Be sure to turn on all the security available like MAC address
restriction, WEP, change the default network name, turn off broadcast of name, and be
sure to change the router's default password.

Re: Does D-Link Router support Appletalk?

2004-01-08 Thread Clyde Kahrl
Kris asked:
I am curious about something though, you said you turned off DHCP to work
with your existing network. Are you using it as a bridge?
A: I just turned off DHCP so I could test the non-wireless part of
the router--from port to port and not going through the WAN port.
It used the DHCP of my Asante router. Although I could see the
internet, it didn't seem to make any difference with regard to the
network--I still couldn't see anything on the net including OS9,
slowtalk, and Jaguar machines. I am vaguely aware that some routers
do not support some protocols (like say appletalk), but D-Link says
it works with Macs so I guess I have to look further.

As for a bridge, I guess you are asking if I was able to use the
router to access another router. I am going to try--but I haven't
yet. (since it was being sold for $46 with 2*$20 rebates, it was
cheaper than a bridge). I don't know what you mean about static IP,
you can turn DHCP on or off for either the WAN or the LAN ports
independently. (the wireless being part of the LAN).

Anyway, to make sure Xmas went OK I bought an Asante 1004AL wireless

Just because they say it works with Macs, it doesn't mean that it will
route appletalk. The fact that it can route TCP/IP technically means
that it works with a Mac.

Indeed. And the hardwired ethernet section probably does pass
EtherTalk packets (AppleTalk over Ethernet) since these packets are
just normal ethernet packets containing AppleTalk data moving through
a hub. However, it probably doesn't route AppleTalk packets between
the wired and wireless networks, nor between wireless clients.

Linksys does something similar. Their hubs and routers work with
Macs, but they don't support AppleTalk. They'll pass AppleTalk
packets over the ethernet hub side of their hardware, but their
wireless clients (or upstream clients, AFAIK) won't ever see those
packets.

As an aside, does OS X do AppleTalk over Ethernet (EtherTalk - much
like AppleTalk over serial cables is LocalTalk, infrared is IRTalk,
etc)? I was under the impression that standard AppleTalk packets had
been evolved out of the OS in favor of only doing AppleTalk
encapsulated in TCP/IP packets (and using new tech like zeroconf)...
In that case, all the clients would need to be on the same subnet if
the router isn't being used.

Peace,
Drew

2004-01-06 Thread Kris McGrath
I have the same router and I can connect via IP (AFP/IP or TCP/IP) to any
other computer, but I don't think it actually supports the Appletalk
protocol.

I am curious about something though, you said you turned off DHCP to work
with your existing network. Are you using it as a bridge? I couldn't get
mine to work as a bridge and the documentation said it wasn't supported.
Static IP was the only option.

Thanks,
Kris

Subject: Re: Does D-Link Router support Appletalk?

I purchased a D-link 614+ wireless router. The router does all
internet stuff OK in both wireless and otherwise mode. I can even
turn off the DHCP so that it can work in the network that already has
an asante router going to the cable modem and other switches.

HOWEVER, whether I am just going from port to port, or through the
WAN port or through wireless, I cannot see any of the network. I
cannot see the other OSX macs, or the OS9 macs or the appletalk or
the usb printers. Yes I turned on appletalk and so forth.

I have used the 614+ for more than a year and am able to see the other
computer and share files going both way. I use it wireless DSL between a
G-3 Wallstreet and a Power Computing desktop 70 feet and 4 walls away.
Runs good on OS 8.6, 9.0, and 9.1. Hope this helps.

Same here did it for about 2 years now under OSX Panther and Jaguar.
You could also contact D-Link Phone Support they are great.

I've used this router for a couple of years. Wireless access to the other
Macs from my PowerBook requires TCP/IP. Determine their IP addresses, and
connect that way.
