I gotta say... on my PB G4 400, I didn't have any problems at all. I
just did a custom install, turning off the languages I didn't know, and
let 'er rip. I did a straight-up install.

The 'archive and install' option worked really well for me - still some
shuffling around of files required, but it eliminated the donkey-work of
n/w configuring and setting up accounts from scratch. See Dan Frakes'
article on the Macworld website for some good additional advice.

Oh, and don't miss that 'options' button in the installer (easily done) ,
which lets you choose which languages to install.

I did an upgrade and forgot to click in the custom install button,
which is where you can turn off the languages you don't want.

On my system (a desktop) this went fine. Since I didn't unselect all
the languages it installed them. I ran Monolingual
 which yanked all the undesired
languages, and all was hunky dory. Nothing broke so far as I can tell.

It's a significant speed bump over 10.1.5, and the 10.2.1 update went
smoothly too.

Re: Easiest way to upgrade OSX.1.5 to Jaguar?

2002-09-21 Thread David M Kiely

I know Seth says this isn't about Drive 10, nevertheless here's my two
Eurocents' worth. My own experience is that no one diagnostic ute does the
job 100%, so I mix and match.

Drive 10 is great for a general scan-and-repair sweep but I've had Seth's
problems with the defrag portion. Instead, I use Norton's Speed Disk for
defragging. Although my version was built for OS 9, I added an OS X profile.
And no, I wouldn't allow the rest of Norton Utilities near my hard disk, but
your mileage may vary.

Lastly, I use DiskWarrior to rebuild my directories. Again, it's an OS 9
utility but works like a dream with OS X, up to and including Jaguar.

Re: Easiest way to upgrade OSX.1.5 to Jaguar?

2002-09-20 Thread Seth McBean

Short answer, do a clean install and install only the things you need.
Restore old extensions afterwards only if you know they'll work in
10.2. Purrs on a Pismo 400.

Now the long one:
From my experience which so far I'm only 1 and 1 with Jaguar installs
and no problems. I've installed on my Pismo and on an iLamp. The Pizz
install went like silk. IMHO its a bit faster, not terribly though, I
think Apple just added some better "wait-a-minute graphics" this time
around that make it seem faster when the system has to think about
things. My best advice would be to get proactive with it and don't just
settle for the easy install. Jag gives better ways move files around
and a more nearly OS 9-like way of administering your system, only more
secure this time around. Check out the install options and see what you
want to install first.

I chose the install clean system option and customized the install to
make the system leaner choosing only the drivers for my printer and
none of the other languages. The install took only about 15-20 min and
everything went without a hitch. It seems fast and apps definitely
launch faster. I like not having to wait almost a minute for sys prefs
to launch. I'm cruising now.

The iMac, not so good, but stupid me for thinking Drive 10 was actually
a viable product and wanting to use a utility "made for OS X". The
thing hosed the hell out of my files on the Lamp first I ran a check
and all was fine. Ran the tests again, it was great. Then I decided to
defrag the drive and 'oh boy!' files were toast. It took a whole day
for the defrag to go through on the nearly half-filled 60GB drive.
Afterwards files were all over the place, corrupt and were apps. But
this aint about Drive 10 this is about Jag. It absolutely purrs on the
iMac. The jag install went great. I'm sure it should be great on one of
those new Tibooks.

Well, when you launch the installer, there is now a new option if the
installer discovers that there is already an OS X install. This option
backup the current system before installing the new one. If you select this
option, you can even tell the installer to retain network settings from your
current one and other settings too. I haven't tried it, so I can't really
comment on it.

Easiest way to upgrade OSX.1.5 to Jaguar?

2002-09-20 Thread Mark

Looking for a short 'n' sweet answer here. What is the best way to upgrade
OS10.1.5 to OS10.2 without doing a clean install. Since Jaguar's release,
I've read many posts on how it took hours to install, languages installed
that the user didn't want, slow as molasses performance (corrected by
optimizing the drive, deleting certain help files, etc.) and so on. It will
take too long to go back through the many useful posts to glean the info I
need. To quote Monty Python, "My brain hurts!"

FYI, I have an iBook (500MHz/combo, 640MB, 40GB IBM Travelstar) running
OSX.1.5 with Classic at OS9.2.2.

Or is short 'n' sweet, too much to ask :^)
