No. This is exactly what that option is for. It doesn't apply, although any programs that require a higher lever of OS won't work. (IE: some programs requiring, for instance 10.3.4 or better won't work. Also it doesn't transfer system preference panes or plug-ins. ArchiveReinstall is the equivalent of the old OS 9 'Clean Install'. Typically though, I do an AR followed by applying the latest combo update, so it doesn't really matter. -- Bruce Johnson -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Thanks to everyone who wrote with info and suggestions. Near as I can tell, due to her being on a cable modem connection, after she updated by CD to 10.3.4, the Mac downloaded and installed the 10.3.8 update before my mom really knew what was happening. That or the other update seem to have really trashed that partition's permissions beyond Disk Utility's ability to fix. There really just was no Finder, and nothing we tried would get one going. Fortunately there was another empty partition on the hard drive, so I had her install a fresh 10.3.4 on that, and after a lot of work changing ownership of her old files (from Unknown and Staff and You Have No Access), we got her mail database and documents moved over and working. So we're up and running again now with a fresh install. Thanks again for your help, Beverly -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Takes about an hour on a sufficiently fast computer... Thanks, Bruce. I was wary of trying that because I recalled hearing that there might be problems reinstalling OS X if the install CDs (10.3) were a lower version than the installed OS (10.8). By this time my mom was losing all hope that we would get anything working at all, and she was about ready to send the Mac back to me and go back to the Windows boxes my other sister wants her to use. So I went for the quickest, least complex thing I could think of that I could tell her how to do over the phone, that I was pretty sure would result in at least one working install of the OS. Once she saw a working OS she was much happier right away. (She didn't have a lot of important documents that weren't backed up elsewhere, so the user information in this case was a secondary concern.) But for future reference: is there a problem with CDs being an older version than the installed, updated version, or does that problem not apply to Archive and Reinstall? thanks, Beverly -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Followup Re: generic screen w/no Finder in OS X?
An archive and install is a great way to get a new, clean system on the Mac (ala Clean install of OS 9 days). However, you will encounter serious problems if you don't update the Mac immediately after doing an archive and install. I did this once and tried to open Mail and some other apps they immediately crashed with an unexpected error. The Mail version was at OS 10.3.5. The archive and install put it back to 10.3.0. Once updated, all was well.
