Yes it can; there is a modem in some of the AirPort Extreme Base

Re: How to connect WS II (OS 9.2.2) wirelessly to dial-up using

2005-05-13 Thread John Slavin
Yep, that's exactly what I'm saying. When you first set it up, you get
a warning saying that using it to bridge between wireless and wired and
using it for DHCP may cause problems, but I've never had it cause any
problems. One thing you do have to do though if you're using X on the
wired machines, is that you need to get ABS Modem Utility:

http://www.catsincharge.com/programs/
in order to control the modem from the wired machines. The beta
release supports X. But I've been using it for years with no problem.
Also, it won't show in versiontracker (I guess since it's beta) under X
software.

You would need one of the base stations that had a modem in it. The
current
Extreme one has a modem and if memory serves there was a version of
the
802.11b station that had a modem in it.
As far as I can tell, all the 802.11b AirPort Base Stations
(non-Extreme)
had a modem in them. I think that the first generation (Graphite)
could
share the modem connection only with computers connecting wirelessly
to it
while the second generation (Snow) could also share it over a wired
Ethernet
network since it had an additional LAN Ethernet port. I could be
wrong
because I've never configured mine to do that...

Nope, not true. I share wired and wireless every day on my graphite
with dialup. And I set up my niece's graphite to do the same. And
it's really not to bad. As long as the other users aren't downloading
files, it works fine. Now it's not near as fast as my DSL here at the
office, but we can set on our sofa with a laptop and multitask just
fine.
So, you're saying that using the Ethernet port (usually used to hook
it to
the cable or DSL modem), you were able to share it with wired
computers? I
didn't know you could do that...

My Grapite base station has a 56k modem in it. It could be "shared" via
wireless, but it would be most likely VERY SLW with more than one
user.

It was my understanding that dialup cannot go wireless. I am pretty
sure that you have to have a high speed connection for a dialup connection?

Maybe someone else knows something I don't.

Hello. I hope this info helps. Sorry it took so long to reply.

First, your Belkin card is not compatible with the Wallstreet running OS
9.2.2. You could use some commercial drivers from Macsense or IOXperts, but
they are not free. They have a 10 to 30 minute free trial you can try.

You could get a card that will work with the Airport drivers in OS 9.2.2,
however, you will probably have better luck with the Orinoco drivers when
trying to talk to the Lucent Base Station. An Airport compatible card can
use either the Airport or Orinoco drivers.

Because you have a Lucent base station, what you need is one of the
Orinoco/Lucent third party (or original Lucent /Orinoco) cards with the
Orinoco v7.2 drivers. Having a matched wireless card and base station,
will make setting up WEP easier.

Links for all your software, compatable cards, as well as links for help in
setting up the wireless network can be found on my FAQ page.

How to connect WS II (OS 9.2.2) wirelessly to dial-up using. . . ?

2005-05-08 Thread Stanton Mitrany
Hi, Friends,

I'm hoping to connect my Wallstreet II 233 MHz running OS 9.2.2, to the
internet via dialup (Earthlink) using a Belkin 802.11b Network Interface
Card in one of the PCMCIA slots. It's called a Wireless Notebook Network
Card, Model number F5D6020.

To connect it to the phone line, I have a Lucent Technologies Orinoco
Residential Gateway, Model RG-1000, which includes both a 56K, V.90, RJ-11
connector modem and a 10Base-T, RJ-45 Ethernet connection, as well as the
original CD, "Orinoco, The New Wavelan", put out by Lucent Technologies in
12/2000. This CD includes a Macintosh driver good from OS 7x to OS 9.0. It's
designed for a G3 Powerbook, but may not work with OS 9.2.2.

I'd like your recommendations for the best (hopefully free) drivers - and
any other necessary software and/or control panels - which I should try to
acquire and install for both the Card and the Gateway (base station) to
enable me to use this setup.

Also, do you know of a link to any instruction set which I can follow to set
this up for myself?

Not to complicate this request (although I realize it does), I'm hoping soon
to upgrade to a larger Hard Drive and install OS 10.3.9, in addition to OS
9.2.2; and hope to be also able to use this hardware setup to go online when
booted on OS X. So I'm hoping to also locate setup instructions and
software/drivers which will work for me under the newer OS.

I assume the drivers and software I need under dial-up will remain the same,
except for a change of settings, if I switch over to a DSL service from
either Earthlink or Verizon. Or, am I wrong?

Thanks for your patience with this complicated request. I couldn't figure
any way to make it simpler. . .

All the best,
stanton
