I'm pretty sure uControl actually uses Sidetrack for the trackpad

I've already got a 20GB iPod. and I'll use it for transferring files
between my eMac, my BW G3 and my new iBook.
So far the single dead pixel isn't that bad. It's barely noticeable. I
was wondering, how does one connect an external mic to this thing? Via
USB?
I like the way this keyboard feels when I'm typing. It almost feels
better than my Apple Desktop USB keyboard!
  - Jonathan
Forgot to mention that I also have a Griffin iMic. I have a 1st-gen
TiBook and 1st-gen LCD iMac, neither of which has audio input. The iMic
works quite well, I have recorded some of my LP's to digital for
transfer into iTunes.

The tappable trackpad came to the PowerBook with the 5300/190
generation, but, oddly enough, it came with the 190 but not the 5300;
I got a 190 trackpad and installed it in my 5300, and have relied on
tapping instead of the button ever since (though I've never taken the
time to figure out how to use it for dragging). There have been some
problems with the system interpreting a light, inadvertent brush as a
tap (which can lead to whole paragraphs of text suddenly being
replaced by the next letter you type); there was a freeware extension
named TapGuard to help with that, but now, as mentioned, OS X
includes an Ignore accidental trackpad input option which should be
checked.

Re: I just ordered a iBook

2004-08-13 Thread larry Zasitko
congrats on your new toy.
When I bought my PowerBook they threw in a Marware sleeve. Not bad but
to light duty for what I like so I bought a Booq bag (auction on
spymac). Still in the plastic wrapper and it is very nice, good padding
etc. I do use the shoulder strap from the Marware sleeve as it does not
slip where the one from Booq is not as good.

Stuff that I have bought since iPod 40gig, bluetooth wireless
keyboard and mouse. Both Apple. The keyboard is great with a nice feel
but looks like it will go through batteries pretty fast so when these
die I will switch to rechargables. The Mouse is good but I really miss
the second button and scroll wheel so will try one of the other ones
out there. All in all, really happy. My brother in law bought a 17
Powerbook and was trying to get the keyboard going but it refused.
Turns out in the end that when he turned it on upstairs it would wake
my PowerBook downstairs.

More memory, never hurts
I am looking at an iCurve stand but so far have resisted. Mine gets
really warm and temps stay around 46 or 47c so may look into a cooling
stand for it.

I have the standard 12 / 1GHz / Combo / 256MB / 30GB Hard Drive /
10.3 etc...

I have a Backpack that was designed to have a laptop in it, It's got a
nice cushy section that will protect the laptop nicely and leave
enough room for my college books.

What do all of you guys/gals use with your iBook / PowerBooks?

I too was concerned about that but think it was just the author being
overcautious. I haven't had any issues w/ it except when it expired and I
wondered why it stopped working. Went to the website and downloaded a new
version and that was it.

It's up to you. You can turn trackpad clicking on or off. Personally,
 I use
it all the time and NEVER use the clicker button on my PowerBook...

But doesn't it get confused between the clicks and the finger
repositioning?

nope. At least not often.

For me. YMMV (before someone jumps all over me for claiming to speak for

I am looking at an iCurve stand but so far have resisted. Mine gets really
warm and temps stay around 46 or 47c so may look into a cooling stand for
it.

Most of the devices for sale for cooling PowerBooks and iBooks are more
decoration than function, unless they have fans built into them.

Go to www.xoxide.com and have a look under laptop coolers.
The USB-powered acrylic model that costs a ridiculously low $12.99 plus
postage is about the best thing out there for cooling an iBook for less than
a hundred dollars.

I guess it depends on the environment and how much cooling you are
expecting. After one hour of running there is about a 6ºC difference
between sitting flat on my desk and being on the coolpad. After two
hours the difference is about 8ºC. I consider that
significant.

Hmm, thats very interesting. I'm quite used to using PC laptops, and
I'm not too worried about the functionality of the iBooks track pad.
But that brings me to another thought. I really hate the single, or
double click function that most track-pads seem to have out of the box.
I'm always moving my finger off of the pad, and back onto it in order
to get the pointer to go where I want it to go. When ever I do that my
computers seem to think thats a click or double click and it all get
confusing. So I usually turn that off. Anyways, will I be able to turn
it off on my new iBook?

Re: I just ordered a iBook

2004-08-12 Thread Brian Andrews
I don't think the iBook's trackpad acts as a mouse button; you can get
this feature in Sidetrack but it sounds like you'll want to disable it.

As for accessories...first item will probably be to throw an Airport
Extreme card and a 512mb SODIMM in there. After that, I agree that you
should get a case or sleeve to protect the iBook. There are huge
threads at both http://www.macnn.com and http://forums.macrumors.com on
the best cases sleeves.

Besides that you don't really need much, all your USB and Firewire
accessories will work with your new 'book just fine.

ps--What iBook did you get 12 or 14? Combo drive or Superdrive?
Congrats and have fun!

Hmm, thats very interesting. I'm quite used to using PC laptops, and
I'm not too worried about the functionality of the iBooks track pad.
But that brings me to another thought. I really hate the single, or
double click function that most track-pads seem to have out of the
box. I'm always moving my finger off of the pad, and back onto it in
order to get the pointer to go where I want it to go. When ever I do
that my computers seem to think thats a click or double click and it
all get confusing. So I usually turn that off. Anyways, will I be able
to turn it off on my new iBook?

It's up to you. You can turn trackpad clicking on or off. Personally, I use
it all the time and NEVER use the clicker button on my PowerBook...

But doesn't it get confused between the clicks and the finger

G4/800 etc
Added Airport Ex and 512MB RAM immediately.
On my desk at home I use a Podium Coolpad to raise the unit and allow
more air flow. My desk keyboard and trackball were attached to my old
iMac so nothing new there. I carry a Newertech Lapbottom in my backpack
when I want something on the road. I also picked up a used AC adapter
to leave plugged in at my desk so I'm not constantly have to burrow
under my desk to plug one in. And an iPod. :-)

I've already got a 20GB 4G iPod, but it's associated with my eMac (Home
Desktop). I could transfer all the songs over to my new iBook, but why?

Nope. I don't know how they do it but to generate a click, you really have
to tap on the trackpad. The trackpad must transmit some information to the
system when it's being touched and the system determines whether it's a drag
(or move, whatever) or it's a click.

Further, Apple added a new setting that instructs the system to ignore
accidental tapping when you type with the keyboard.
