Re: PISMO CAN'T FIND SYSTEM

2003-10-07 Thread Sakshin de Groot
Drew. I got the machine running again. The case was that I thougt that the
arrow up key was the option key. After being puzzled for a long time the
switch went on. That made a big difference. And the sound didn't sound
because the soundlevel was at 0.

Thank you so much. You are my hero! What a knowledge.

Now i have to find out how to show my old firewire HD on the desktop. Do i
have to use jumpers?

Thank you Drew. I tried all your hints but Pismo doesn't make a start up
sound. It goes straight to a grey screen with a small folder in the
middle
wich switches to a system icon and a question mark.

 What to do?

That's strange. Some Macs when muted don't sound the startup
chime... Don't know if that's the case with the Pismo or not...

 Try this:
As soon as you hit the power button, hold down
Apple-Option-O-F to boot into OpenFirmware. You should get a
white-ish/grey screen with a text interface (it will look a bit like
 DOS does).

Type reset-all return at the prompt.

You Mac should reboot after you hit the return key.

Then try holding down Apple-option-p-r to reset the PRAM...

If after doing all this booting from a CD still doesn't work (by
holding the c key at startup), then who knows...

Failing all that, I'd check all the connections again - make sure to
check that the keyboard is plugged in correctly, that all the RAM is
seated correctly, and that both ends of the hard drive cable are
firmly seated. You might even try using an external keyboard, just
to be on the safe side.

I'm also rather surprised that the PRAM reset didn't sound the
startup chime the second time. Not that I doubt you, but are you
sure you pressed all four buttons at the same time and that you
pressed them immediately after (or even during) the startup chime (or
right after pushing down the power button), then held them down until
the screen lit up, went dark, PowerBook restarted, and repeated once
or twice? The fact that you didn't hear a startup chime sounds odd -
a PRAM reset done correctly _always_ sounds the startup chime on the
 re-boot.

If that still doesn't work, then I'm stumped.

 Peace,
 Drew

Most firewire cases want to have the hard drive jumpered as master in
order to work properly with the firewire bridgeboard. There should be a
jumper on the drive, and a set of pins labeled either M and S, or M, S,
and C depending on the drive. Place the jumper on the pair labeled M
(for Master) and the drive should be ready to go with the case.

Thank you Adam. I see if i can make the machine work with your tips.So
far
however, the machine doesn't start up from CD, even while pressing C.

Have you tried resetting the PRAM? That usually clears the setting
that defines which drive you have selected as the boot disk... To do
it, hold down Apple-Option-P-R all at the same time after you
hear the startup chime. You LCD will probably light up, then it will
restart again. Let it cycle twice (wait for the chimes to sound
two times) before you let go of the keys.

Alternatively, you can hold down the Option key as soon as you hear
the startup chimes. The PowerBook will scan all connected hard disks
to find system folders and display them on the screen as buttons.
Click on the icon represeting the disk you want to start with, and
press return or hit the arrow button. (By the way, this is a handy
trick if you want to switch your boot drive at startup but didn't
change the startup disk before you shut down your Mac the last time.
It's especially useful if you've got a bunch of external FireWire
 disks or expansion bay modules.)

That should get you booted, at least. Then change your startup disk
properly by using the Startup Disk control panel.

you can get an Apple Certified tech in your area to take a look at it.

Hmm, two things come to mind... one is to make sure that jumpers on the
30GB drive are properly setup. For most drives, setting it up for cable
select is good enough, and requires no jumpers to actually be set.

The other is that by swapping the drives around like you did, confused
the machine. Did you connect the old drive in the Sitecom case when the
Pismo was on, or was the Pismo off when you connected it?

I recommend double-checking the jumpers, then starting from a MacOS 9
CD if you can. Holding 'C' when booting will force OpenFirmware to load
from the CD and it should boot, even in a confused state. Use Startup
Disk to select the drive that is currently internal and restart. It
 should clear up the problem.

Another thing you should probably check is that the cable to the HD is
properly seated on both ends. I did a very bad thing when I installed
my 40GB Hitachi into my Lombard and forgot to check the end connected
to the logic board. Suffice it to say, I had fun reformatting and
 reinstalling 5 days later.
