Following the discussion on the Pismo HD replacement with considerable
interest.
I am wondering if the harddrive specs for the Pismo are the same for
the Wallstreet Rev. 2 (PDQ).
Someone who is in the know please let me know.
Thanks.
The Wallstreet came with the larger 17mm drives, the Lombard/Pismo
could only use 12.5 max.

Actually, I was just looking at my original WallStreet (266, 4GB HD,
from the end of the production run as the Lombard was just about to be
or had been introduced) drive - I replaced it years ago, but had just
gotten a 2.5 case and was going to put the old drive in it now, only
to find it had mysteriously died - but anyway, I noticed in the
description on the label that it is 9.5mm.

So the Wallstreet fits a larger drive, but at least mine didn't come
with one.

(That measurement has gotta be the height, right? And it is a really
skinny drive compared to other notebook drives I've seen.)

Re: Pismo HD

2004-12-17 Thread Andrew
A 5400 or even 7200 rpm drive will give you a
noticeable speed boost, at very little cost in battery
life (probably made up by the increased speed of disk
access). Most importantly, the price difference
between 4200 and 5400 rpm dirves is about $20 for a
40GB, which makes choosing the faster drive a very
easy decision. Another benefit on most faster drives
is a larger cache. The 4200 rpm 40gb drive that came
in my PowerBook has only a 2mb cache, but the 5400 rpm
drive I replaced it with (80gb) has an 8mb cache,
which is probably responsible for as much of a speed
gain as the faster mechanism.

My Lombard's 6gb drive was replaced by a 5400 rpm 20gb
drive with similar results (same 8mb cache).

I agree. I personally had great experience with IMB.Hitachi's
Travelstar drives in my Pismo. I think the Pismo will take up to a
12.5mm high drive.

You will definitely notice a performance boost with the faster
drive/larger cache.

Good luck.

to which Bruce Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED] replied:

Drive height is limited to 12.5mm, not 9.5mm, which expands the range of
possiblities to (just about?) every currently available 2.5 drive.
You'll see such terms as ATA5 and ATA6, the Pismo can use them all. The
only restriction is that the Pismo's onboard Ultra ATA controller can
only see the first 120-something GBs of a drive. Since AFAIK there are no
larger drives available yet, that won't be a consideration (yet.)

Hmm, I just thought of SATA, are there any such 2.5 mechanisms? I'm not
aware of any but then I haven't been paying close attention lately.

Re: Pismo HD replacement, 7200 rpm?

2004-12-13 Thread Nancy Lawrence
I really like my Hitachi 40gb 7200rpm drive. I have a Pismo 400 and my
only complaint is that I should've gotten a 60 gb. It did make a
peculiar whirring sound after about a month of use but I figured that
perhaps the whole sled had gotten jarred--I carry it on a bike quite
often--and so I removed the drive sled and put it back and put an
eyeglass pad on top for good measure. I haven't heard anything from it
since. Oh, and my fan has *never* come on. I really noticed a big
speed difference, too. I upgraded from the stock drive, which is 4200
rpm.

It really depends how fast your machine needs to be. The Pismo is still

Re: Pismo HD

2004-10-24 Thread Stuart Saunders
Markemmanuel,
You can get 60 Gig 7200 rpm drives for around $150 these days. It's a
Hitachi - ATA/IDE - I have just bought one. I think that is the highest
capacity for a 7200 rpm model, but the speed is supposed to make a
difference. Will update after mine is installed.

Good luck,
Stuart.

Reading through these old postings about a bigger HD for the Pismo, what are
the thoughts on the Hitachi/IBM Travelstar 60GB 7200rpm vs the 80GB 5400rpm?
Has anyone tried them head to head? Is there a noticeable performance boost
from the 7200rpm drive? Price is about the same for both, and I'm not sure
which one is the better choice. I'm looking for max performance, but another
20GB for the money sure is nice...

I haven't done a head-to-head test, but the major difference would be seek
times: 10ms for the 7200 rpm drive vs. 12ms for the 5400 rpm. Depending on
how much disk i/o you're doing, that could be noticeable.

For what it's worth, I opted for the 7200 rpm drive and have been quite
happy with it. Also, it was about $50 cheaper than the 80GB drive (at least
when I bought it).

Hope this helps,

I had to cutpaste this after it bounced back to me...

What's the better way to go? Keep the Internal 10gb hd and get an
external 911 case? I have the 10gb in the Pismo and a 60gb in the
iMacAlso have a new Maxtor 120gb that I want to get into the iMac
and am looking for a 3.5 external case for the 60gb to go in..Ideally,
I would like to have at least 60 GB available for the Pismo..We have
also been using the 30gb iPod as an external for both systems as
needed...It seems to work perfectly w/both systems.

Then I'd get an external firewire HD. Your cost per GB is far cheaper

external 60 and 120 GB HD and there's only about 45 GB free between the
two due to my music collection.

2003-11-26 Thread Richard Matteson
I replaced the stock 10GB drive in my Pismo/400 with a Travelstar 40GNX
40GB, 5400 RPM model a couple months ago and have had no trouble with
it at all. The Pismo seems a bit peppier with the new drive and it is
definitely quieter. I would definitely recommend the upgrade (but I
would go as large as your wallet will allow.)

Mine was purchased from Googlegear (now ZipZoomFly) a while ago at
$126, though I don't see that model in their listing now. (Check one of
the price finder sites for best deals.)

As for installation, it was really quite easy. However, care must be
taken to seat all connections (particularly the processor module)
securely. My instructions came from the PowerBook manual originally
shipped with the computer.

Do it! You'll not regret it. Good luck!

Oooo, Hitachi!

Seriously, I have a 4200 RPM 40GB Hitachi that I got for 100$. This
sucker is whisper quiet... My Lombard with the CD-ROM drive removed
makes NO noise above the background noise, even when grinding the HD
like crazy. So yes, that is the good drive to get.

Bare drives are not a problem, just follow the instructions for
replacing your Pismo HD available on xlr8yourmac.com and things will go
smoothly. (Took me about 10 minutes to replace) Be careful though, the
instructions tell you to leave the cable plugged into the logic board
during the replacement, and I unseated my cable during installation,
leading to a HD failure a week afterwards, wiping all my data. I would
add an instruction at the end saying 'Make sure both sides of the HD
cable are SEATED FIRMLY BEFORE CLOSING THE MACHINE. Save yourself some
headaches there.

DPrice,

On October 1st I purchased the 40GB Travelstar for my Pismo 400 MHz. I got
it from OWC and also got a case to use my old 10GB as an external USB drive
(although now I wish I had paid the extra for the firewire).

I am very happy with it. Very quiet (my old one was starting to really annoy
me with the noise), and easy to install. It was my first time opening up a
powerbook for an upgrade. I would not hesitate to do any more installations
or upgrades myself.

You can get instructions with pictures from several sources. I printed out 2
different sets of instructions and thought it was pretty straight forward.

Feel free to email me off list with any questions and there are a lot more
experienced and very helpful listers here if you run into a problem.

Re: Pismo HD question

On 11/25/03 2:30 PM, DPrice enlightened us by writing:

I am considering buying the following drive from Googlegear.com
because of positive reports on it that I have seen here. I am just
making sure this is close to the one reported, if not the same. It is
a bare drive. How problematic is that? This is the first laptop drive
I have purchased so my knowledge is clearly limited:

IBM Hitachi Travelstar 40GNX 20GB ATA-5 2.5in 5400 rpm mobile drive

Thanks a lot.

FWIW, that site is now:

http://www.ZipZoomFly.com/

While the Travelstar is a great drive (they show it out of stock tonight
on that site), is the size large enough for your needs? If you will be
ripping/downloading MP3s in iTunes, you may find the drive filling up
rather quickly. My original 10GB on my Pismo did, and I am now looking at
a 60GB Toshiba (16MB buffer, as opposed to the smaller buffer - 2MB? - on
the comparable Hitachi/IBM one).

Consider your space reqeuirements for now and a little into the future. I
find that in the past I have underestimated how much drive space I
needed, and in MacOS 9.x, I turned off virtual memory. When I go to MacOS
X, I will need extra space for VM, since X doesn't allow you to turn
Virtual Memory off and uses it continually (I understand).

YMMV, HTH,

Jim Rohde

I always go to Transinternational's site. Having done an upgrade twice
(to 30gb and just today to 60gb 7200 rpm). Only real concern is to take
care when removing and reinstalling the daughtercard. Those pins are
really small and you can (or at least I did) bend a couple.

DPrice,

On October 1st I purchased the 40GB Travelstar for my Pismo 400 MHz. I
got it from OWC and also got a case to use my old 10GB as an external
USB drive (although now I wish I had paid the extra for the firewire).

I am very happy with it. Very quiet (my old one was starting to really
annoy me with the noise), and easy to install. It was my first time
opening up a powerbook for an upgrade. I would not hesitate to do any
more installations or upgrades myself.

You can get instructions with pictures from several sources. I printed
out 2 different sets of instructions and thought it was pretty
straight forward.

Feel free to email me off list with any questions and there are a lot
more experienced and very helpful listers here if you run into a
problem.

Suggestions for upgrading Pismo HD?

2002-10-24 Thread James Rohde
Hi all,

I've been considering (when the funds are saved up) upgrading my Pismo's
'10GB' Toshiba drive. However, not wanting to waste the old drive (heck,
I still have my old 80 _MB_ drive from my now non-working IIcx!), I would
like to get one of the Travelstar 40GB+ drives and a FireWire external
enclosure. I want to put the 9.36 GB into the enclosure and the bigger
Travelstar inside my Pismo. Okay, nothing new here, right?

But the hitch is this - it's apparently cheaper to buy the 40+ GB drive
IN the external enclosure than to buy just the drive (for internal use)
and an empty enclosure. So can anyone out there in G-Books-Land suggest
an external drive that's not too hard to open up and swap out the drive?
(Brand or which Mac store would send along directions on how to do the
swap) I have reasonable direction-following skills and have successfully
taken apart my Pismo into the main sub-assemblies (I'm not a total
techie, but can remove and replace the drive fine) and re-assembled it
without help (or a big repair bill).

So what suggestions can you give me on where to look/buy/wheel and deal?

Jim Rohde

For those who find safety in numbers, Windows
is the safe, smart choice. For those who
simply want the best tool for the job, the
Mac is certainly worth consideration.

Jim,
I've swapped my 12GB Toshiba from my Pismo into a VST pocket drive
case. Easy. You peel back the plastic surround, undo 4 silver and
three black phillips head screws, and you're in business. I didn't
try _too_ hard to get the plastic wraparound back on, and it looks,
okay. But the 20GB I got from the last smartdisk sale didn't look
much prettier when I got it. So a VST/Smartdisk slim drive is an
easy swap -- certainly, if you can install the drive in your
powerbook, the enclosure won't be a problem.
Best,
Joel

Truly, I see no reason to purchase a pre-assembled drive whatsoever
unless it costs much, much less than the separate components.

Good point, Dan. I paid little for the 3GB pocket drive two years
ago, and picked up a 20GB one for $85 three weeks ago, both at the
time much cheaper than going separately, but I hear you on the
warranty issue.

Torx for Pismo HD? (was: Re: Wallstreet hard drive woe)

2002-08-28 Thread Jim

But, I digress. Get a Torx #8 screwdriver from Sears, put in a
larger, faster HD, and your PB will be good as new.

Listers,

Is Torx8 the size needed for removing the Pismo drive too? Last time
I had the keyboard up, I noticed that the drive was fastened with
those damnable torx screws. Now, months later, I'm wanting to
upgrade mine, but haven't a full torx set to try out, and I don't
want to lug my Pismo to the hardware store to check for fit.

Thanks in advance,

Pismo HD upgrade...using both!

2002-07-03 Thread Gene Wright

Links: www.newegg.com and www.googlegear.com are both good sources for
powerbook drives.

I was fortunate enough to get an expansion bay 10Gb hard drive for my pismo
a few months ago for about $50. I took it apart and discovered the 10gb
drive was very easy to remove. Sold it and now will move my internal 30gb to
the expansion bay and will put the new 40gb internal.

the expansion bay hd was very easy to take apart...I'm fairly inept. :-)

Now, I'll have it to go along with my combo drive DVD/CDRW drive in my
Pismo!
