Hello, I would like to opine on this. I am a writer (legal) as well, and I surf endlessly on legal sites to research. While I do have an iBook, I prefer using my ancient Powerbook 5300c or 3400c for my daily writing, especially when I am out and about. First of all, the keyboard on these two machines (identical keyboards) are in my opinion the very best Apple keyboard for typing. The keys have a nice feel to them, and take a dedicated finger-punch to register, and the spring feel seems just right, for me at least. Secondly, both have cheap, cheap ($5-$10) batteries out there that still hold good charges; the 3400c more so. I can pack my two 3400c li-ion batteries, or my four 5300c ni-cads, and have productivity at Starbucks or the Waffle House for 4-5 hours. Also, both can be made to be wireless. Most importantly, while neither is a lightweight compared to today's moden Apple laptops, both are pretty ruggedly built, and neither is expensive enough to worry about getting stolen or broken. xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo Ivy F., AL Roll Tide! I had a 2400c G/3 320 and it was pretty fast and small, but the battery life forced me to get a G/3 600 iBook, dual USB and it is all I take on trips now. It has great battery life, great WIFI range, is faster than the 2400c and is much more convenient than the strange rear input panel the 2400c has. That said, I did get another 2400c after I sold my G/3 320 for lots of money, and play with it every once and a while even now. In a message dated 11/25/05 6:38:09 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Do pismos really run a lot cooler than wallstreets? Yes, very much so. And, they are a lot lighter, too. If you must have the most current Mac OS possible, the Pismo is your machine; otherwise the Lombard (lacks built-in Firewire, lacks built-in Airport) is essentially the same machine. I own both, and both have been upgraded to the greatest extent possible using Apple features and third-party replacement drives. The Pismo is 500 MHz, a 60 GB hard drive, and a dual-layer DVD-ROM-R-R/W drive (Pioneer DVR-K05); the Lombard is 400 MHz (built-in DVD decoder), a 60 GB hard drive, and a dual-layer DVD-ROM-R-R/W drive (Teac UJ-845). One thing that is important to me is DVD performance, and for this purpose the Pismo and Lombard are equal, if a built-in DVD writer is used (limited to 4X most of the time; limited to 2X in a few cases, both on account of problems with the internal drive bay and its supporting chip set); whereas the Pismo has no such limits provided an external Firewire DVD-ROM-R-R/W drive (Pioneer DVR-110) is used instead (8X is easily achieved with an external writer). Either machine is usable with my digicams as these support both USB and Firewire; USB is used as a fallback connection with my Fuji Finepix Pro S2 on the Lombard, whereas Firewire is used as the preferred connection on the Pismo with the same digicam. Both machines are running Mac OS 10.3.9. The Pismo is easily upgradeable to 10.4; the Lombard is less easily so upgraded. Personally, I prefer the Pismo as it has essentially the same connectivity as my Rev. 2 BW 450 MHz desktop. But, the BW has no problems with internal DVD drive performance (it employs the recommended, and required for 8X performance 80-wire/40-pin cable). Both support 10/100 Ethernet, which is my in-house networking standard. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I use a 12 g4/800 iBook (refurb) that was purchased 18 months ago from Apple. It has never given me any problems and I have been very pleased. My only complaint is that it does get warm on the bottom after an hour or so of steady use. To avoid the heat problem, I either carry it in a LapTrap case or carry a CoolPad (roadwired?) and don't worry about it. Re: Question re: buying a used Apple Laptop
I guess I'll have to chime in like that squeaky wheel and weigh in against certain iBooks: The white iBook G3 series--all of them--are dogs and to be avoided like the plague. And it is not just cranky complaint, it is acknowledged so by Apple, who still have an extended repair program in place to handle the failures of logic board, screens and screen power and data connections. Furthermore, if they fail in any other regard than the extended program covers, then you are in for either an expensive or complicated repair: expensive if you have to hire someone to do the work, and complicated if you do it your self. The market believes them to be dogs as well, for they continually sell at values well below the older Lombard and Pismos on eBay, yes, but more importantly, in local classifieds of computer savvy locations like SF and Seattle. The iceBook G4 on the other hand seems to have corrected many of the G3 flaws. I enjoy the ice form factor immensely. BUT, even the G4 iceBooks are very difficult to self serve in repairs. I also still have affection for my G3 upgraded PowerBook 1400c. The keyboard is the best ever provided by Apple. It is light, and the active matrix screen is gorgeous. A G3 upgraded 1400 can fly past many stock Wallstreets in finder and non-ram intensive apps. It chokes at ram, but I did choose to try the flash ram/virtual memory OS load, and it works like a charm. It is easy to self service. It is a powerful net surfer with a G3 chip, even the 250 Newer chip, but it cannot and will not ever enjoy USB or Firewire connections. If you use SCSI peripherals, then you are in luck. it is stuck in OS9 at best, and web surfing options are shrinking in that platform. Explorer has not been updated, Mozilla is buggy, Netscape--forget it, iCab is nifty... And SO cheap to buy and build up these days! 2400s...nifty, but clunky as far as all the needed peripherals. 3400s...great, simply great. Slightly heavy, very thick. Easy to service. Which is good because failure rates are increasing. These machines seem to be slightly less robust than the 1400s build-wise, especially at the track-pad clicker, which is the most frequently broken compenent I see. And no wonder, underneath it's a tab of weak plastic against a steel spring--guess who wins over time? Like the 1400s, cheap to buy, build and repair. Basically stuck at OS9 also, although X-Post Facto will induce a load of X.1 (and the loss of several functions). Lomards are robust machines, easy to fix, handle X OK, but need special tricks to load past X.3. Have USB, SCSI, no built in firewire, and you cannot use firewire and a wireless card simultaneously due to the reduction of PCMCI slots to one. You could use a wireless e-net bridge and firewire at the same time though. Getting cheap enough to be good travel in risky places units. If stolen, or seared by molten lava, relatively cheap to replace. Pismo--a very sweet machine. With 1 gig of ram and the 500 chip, a relative screamer compared to the pack. Only the G4 iceBooks compare in price and performance, but the Pismo is supremely upgradeable in ram load and processor (even to G4), has more connectivity and expansion options, and can handle even the latest X OS. Interestingly, you even see some tiBooks at this price range, but the early ti's are not as fast as a G4 boosted Pismo, nor as robust apprearance wise-issues with dents and paint chipping abound. If you have the money, my suggestion would be a Pismo. I never noticed the heat with the 266 MHz Wallstreet I used to have. My Mom has it now, Wallstreets are tough. If all you are doing is writing and surfing then a stock Wallstreet 300 MHz processor should work fine and will run a lot cooler. I'm sure you could find someone with a stock 300 MHz wallstreet that would be happy to trade. Doesn't do much for the weight issue though. The Lombard and Pismo are both thinner and lighter than the Wallstreet. if you wanted a Lombard I could make you a deal on a 333 Lombard with a 400 MHz CPU. My Pismo 500 G/3 is not as fast as my iBook 600 G/3 and that is the cold hard fact. The Pismo is a great machine, but it is nowhere as portable as the iBook 600, battery (on one battery) life is much less and WIFI range is the same for both. Are the white iBooks really just waiting to die? I just don't want to spend $350-$450 on a 12 iBook and have the logic board go after a few months. AFAIK you only hear about problems with iBooks because Mac users are so particular and so vocal; they're actually quite reliable 'Books that perform nicely for your intended uses. I really liked the G3/500 IceBook that I owned for about a year, and never had a problem. The 500-600 MHz models should be available at decent prices via ebay and/or the Swaplist, and would do quite well for you. My thoughts on how well other 'Books I've owned meet your criteria: - The 2400c is a sweet little PB, BUT... Good batteries (more than 60-90 minutes of runtime) can be hard to come by. You might also find the 800x600 10.4 display a little cramped. If you can find one that's been upgraded with a G3 processor and/or RAM maxed to 112 MB, you might be able to live with the limitations. The keyboard's only 87% of standard size so you might find it a little cramped (I didn't but some folks do). - A 1400c with a G3 upgrade and RAM maxed at 64 MB is a VERY nice writing machine -- one of the best keyboards ever in a laptop. The 800x600 11.3 display seemed to feel a little bigger to me; only about an inch larger diagonally than the 2400's, but felt a bit more usable. (I have a G3/250 1400 I'm looking to sell, if you wanna contact me offlist.) - If you don't mind the heft (8 lbs. or more with battery, etc.) you'll find the 3400c an EXCELLENT 'Book for writing and basic internet. The display is also only 800x600 but it's 12...and the 144 MB RAM max is is a nice upgrade compared to the 1400 and 2400; more than adequate for running OS 9.1 comfortably. I've just switched to a 240 MHz model as my second Mac, primarily for exactly the uses you indicate -- writing and internet. All three of the x400 'Books do wi-fi internet quite well with PC cards, so basically your choice of which to use will largely depend one three factors: budget, display size preference, and speed (what's fast enough for you). The Dual USB 12 iBooks are of course more modern and more powerful and the 1024x768 display would feel very roomy compared to the older 'Books, but you can save a pretty penny by going with one of the x400's. Re: Question re: buying a used Apple Laptop
Tom: I did the Windows to Mac switch about 7 months ago. I was so impressed with the desktop transition that I bought a used 12 iBook also. My reasons for buying it are much like yours...I wanted to wirelessly access the internet at home and office and I use it primarily for writing. The heat factor was a bit troublesome at first. But, I bought a set of laptop bumpers from www.bodelin.com and that helped both the heat issue and ergonomics. I understand your concern for the issue of problems after a few months. While I only have 7 months under my belt with this new/used machine, I believe it to very solid. I use my approximately 4 hours a day, primarily on battery and have had absolutely no problems with it. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one just like it. I have a 1400 - too slow on the Internet. I bought a Clamshell iBook. I liked it, but somehow my daughter ended up with it. Then I bought a severely upgraded wallstreet, now a g4-500, and while I love the way it works, I dislike both the size and the heat factor. As a writer, I feel distracted by the heat coming up through my fingers. I have heard the Pismos run much cooler. I want small size, battery longevity, cool running, wireless ability (doesn't have to be built-in as long as I can add on). I love those 12 white iBooks and would buy a used one of those in a heartbeat, except I keep running into people who are having repair nightmares with them. Do pismos really run a lot cooler than wallstreets? Are the white iBooks really just waiting to die? I just don't want to spend $350-$450 on a 12 iBook and have the logic board go after a few months.
