Re: REPOST: How can I connect Wallstreet II/ OS 9.2.2 to iBook 500/ OS X 10.3.9?

2005-08-16 Thread G Henry Taylor
Try the crossover ethernet cable. I connect my Lombard and iBook (700)
via a plain ethernet cable. The iBook will recognize the cable
automatically. In the book you wish to copy files from, set file
sharing on and firewall off. You should see the book in your network.
This works for me, but I have 10.3.9 on both machines.

Hope this helps,

Henry

Firewire disc mode? Unfortunately, I only have firewire on the iBook

and not on the Wallstreet II.

The Wallstreet II has USB, but only through a PCMCIA card which I have
inserted. . .

How would you recommend doing this with either an Ethernet crossover

or a pair of USB cables routed through a USB hub?

Alternatively, what else might I try?

REPOST: How can I connect Wallstreet II/ OS 9.2.2 to iBook 500/ OS X 10.3.9?

2005-08-15 Thread Stanton Mitrany
Dear List-mate,

I didn't get a single response to this inquiry when I posted it a few weeks
ago; perhaps you can at least point me in the right direction?!

I imagined this was an easy question, but I've never done it, and don't know
how.

How do I connect two PowerBooks, a Wallstreet II running OS 9.2.2 and an
iBook 500, running OS X 10.3.9 to one another, so that I can copy files from
one to the other?

Here's the equipment I have available to me which might prove useful:

- USB A-B cables and a Belkin USB hub

- straight and crossover ethernet cables,

- D-Link DWL Wireless USB adapter,

- 2 USB Bluetooth adapters- a D-Link Bluetooth DBT-120, and a Mitsumi
CE0197,

- Belkin 802.11B PCMCIA CardBus Wireless Notebook Network Card F506020.

I don't know which device and/or cable to use, for what, and how. I don't
know whether to attach these before startup, which machine to start first,
which control panels to set up on each machine, and in what order, etc.

Do any of these units require drivers which may need to be installed in
either system?

Does one of the machines have to be a master and the other a slave?

Does one of the operating systems have to have control over the other?

Have you ever done this? Please tell me how! If you really know how, will
you please explain it step-by-step?

Has someone written a simple guide to how to do this, which I can download
read? I've checked MacHelp for connecting two (or 2) powerbooks and have
found nothing which seems to address this topic.

Also, if you're attempting to respond to this appeal, please be kind enough
to copy my email with your answer, to [EMAIL PROTECTED] since
I've been receiving a large percentage of bounce messages relating to
postings to the list, and therefore, I'm probably not seeing more than one
in four or five.

Please give me any help you can! At least, please try to point me in the
right direction!

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom!

All the best,
stanton

If you can connect both of these to the internet simultaneously behind a

even goto ipchicken.com to find the IP of the ibook, then try to telnet

I would use the crossover cable between the two notebooks, and then
turn on Personal File Sharing in the Sharing pane of System

From another Lister, Michael Cangelosi [EMAIL PROTECTED] came
this amazing reply, for which I'm deeply grateful. Unfortunately, I don't
have all the pieces necessary to try his suggestion.

I also wonder, though, whether Apple had intended some more direct method to
accomplish this hookup, which my gut tells me should be a relatively
straightforward thing to accomplish. . . and surely, innumerable Mac users
have had the need to do the same thing!

Also, if you're attempting to respond to this appeal, please be kind

Re: REPOST: How can I connect Wallstreet II/ OS 9.2.2 to iBook 500/ OS X 10.3.9?

2005-08-15 Thread Stanton Mitrany

Steve Fuller [EMAIL PROTECTED] suggested the following:

I would use the crossover cable between the two notebooks, and then turn
on Personal File Sharing in the Sharing pane of System Preferences. This
will enable AFP and then you should be able to see the ibook in the chooser
on the WallStreet. -Steve

I've tried to follow this advice, and have done a Sherlock II search on the
Wallstreet II with OS 9.2.2 for Personal File Sharing and also for
PersonalFileSharing, and have found no matches for either of them. How do
I locate them?

On Aug 15, 2005, at 3:35 PM, Stanton Mitrany had asked:

Dear List-mate,

I didn't get a single response to this inquiry when I posted it a few weeks

- 2 USB Bluetooth adapters- a D-Link Bluetooth DBT-120, and a Mitsumi
CE0197,

- Belkin 802.11B PCMCIA CardBus Wireless Notebook Network Card F506020.

Re: REPOST: How can I connect Wallstreet II/ OS 9.2.2 to iBook 500/ OS X 10.3.9?

2005-08-15 Thread Matt Kane's Brain
I think you may need to manually set up ip addresses on each powerbook.
This is not difficult, but your original post leads to believe that you
may not agree. :)

On the OSX machine, go to System Preferences - Network - Ethernet -
Configure and type in 192.168.1.1 for IP address and 255.255.255.0 for
Subnet mask. If you use Ethernet on that PowerBook regularly, you will
probably want to create a new Location before doing this.

On the OS 9 machine, you need to go into the Control Panel for TCP/IP
and do pretty much the same, but use 192.168.1.2 for your IP address.

2005-08-15 Thread John Slavin
One thing you will need to do on the Wallstreet is make sure that
Appletalk is an active extension (or is it a control panel and
extension), but anyway you need to make sure that appletalk is set to
use ethernet. And then on the OSX machine, go to the networking and
for the ethernet port, make sure the appletalk checkbox is checked.

Do you need to enable sharing if it's the X machine that's being shared?

Re: REPOST: How can I connect Wallstreet II/ OS 9.2.2 to iBook 500/ OS X 10.3.9?

2005-08-15 Thread Stanton Mitrany

From John Slavin [EMAIL PROTECTED] I have the following further
suggestion:

One thing you will need to do on the Wallstreet is make sure that
Appletalk
is an active extension (or is it a control panel and extension), but anyway
you need to make sure that appletalk is set to use ethernet. And then on
the OSX machine, go to the networking and for the ethernet port, make sure
the appletalk checkbox is checked.

Do you need to enable sharing if it's the X machine that's being shared?

**

OK, I've just found that there is a Web Sharing control panel on OS 9.2.2.
Is that what needs to be
turned on to on the Wallstreet II to locate the iBook over the Ethernet
crossover cable? If that's where I have to set it up on the Wallstreet end,
what, exactly, do I have to do in this control panel to activate the
connection? Anything else?

What should I see on each machine when the connection is active? Will I be
able to drag files and folders from one machine to the other?

Thanks again, you gracious experts!

Blessings,
stanton

Yep, that's the way to do it, although I think you can go either way. I
almost forget how to do it in 9, though.

I would use the crossover cable between the two notebooks, and then turn on
Personal File Sharing in the Sharing pane of System Preferences. This will
enable AFP and then you should be able to see the ibook in the chooser on
the WallStreet.

Dear List-mate,

I didn't get a single response to this inquiry when I posted it a few weeks

I imagined this was an easy question, but I've never done it, and don't
know how.

How do I connect two PowerBooks, a Wallstreet II running OS 9.2.2 and an
iBook 500, running OS X 10.3.9 to one another, so that I can copy files
from one to the other?

Has someone written a simple guide to how to do this, which I can download
read? I've checked MacHelp for connecting two (or 2) powerbooks and
have found nothing which seems to address this topic.

All the best, stanton

I have a network setup in my home and the Quicksilver 2002, wallstreet
II, 8600 upgrade, and the PC are all talking just fine to each other. I
would suggest getting an inexpensive hub to connect everything together
and then just turn it on. Whoa not quite that simple. First go to this
web page and read his networking article it will help you a lot. Just
disregard the PC stuff. It is now doable with the included software in
OS X. It is just a pain to get it configured right from the PC side to
the Macintosh. The biggest problem the you will find is that you have to
hard boot both machines for them to recognize each other on the network.
If you still have problems after reading this article contact me and I
will help you through it step by step. All you need is time and patience.
