Re: Ram in a Wallstreet
There's no RAM 'on board' on any G3 series Powerbook. The Kanga is a G3 PowerBook. It has 32-Mb RAM on the logic board. Both posters are right... The expression G3 SERIES Powerbook does not include the Kanga; and all G3 SERIES Powerbooks have no ram onboard. And the Kanga IS a G3 Powerbook and has ram onboard. The naming can be confusing, as has at times been discussed aplenty on this list. Luis Sequeira -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... There's no RAM 'on board' on any G3 series Powerbook. The Kanga is a G3 PowerBook. It has 32-Mb RAM on the logic board. Okay, _now_ we're splitting hairs. Anyway, Jeff is right. Wallstreets commonly came with 32MB in the lower slot. Since 256MB low profile SODIMMs are more expensive than their full-height brethren, I'd say it's good odds that the bottom slot has 32MB and the top slot has 256MB. Re: Ram In a Wallstreet/300Mhz
Hi Pete You Should not have any problem. I have a Wallstreet II 233 Mhz with 512 ram and $0 Gb HD running 10.1.5. Just make sure it is low profile and the correct density of chips. I was lucky with mine as a fellow lister (The Powerbook Fanatic) checked compatibility for me before sending them. When installed they were identified in system profiler and I have had no problem since. I have been given OS 10.2 for Christmas so I hope the installation of this will go as smoothly as 10.1 and its upgrades did. John Abraham. UK. I haven't had any issues with OWC memory. You get what you pay for. I've never had problems with memory from Data Memory Corp, http://www.datamem.com and while they're not always the very cheapest, I'm more than willing to avoid the endless and hard-to-diagnose problems you get from bad RAM. I had bad RAM in my 7600 once. What happened is that my internal SCSI bus went away when I put in my G4 upgrade card. This persisted when I replaced my motherboard. I figured it was an issue with the G4 card and put it up on the shelf, pissed off. (It was an old JoeCard I'd gotten on clearance, the original company was no longer in existence and I couldn't return it) Months later I bought 2 new 128 MB RAM sticks (from Datamem) and discovered that not all my RAM now showed up. Painstakingly checking, DIMM by DIMM, I discovered that everything would work by itself, but that when some of my older sticks were in the system the new 128 MB sticks didn't show up. I bought another 128 MB stick at $24 and replaced all of the motley old collection of 16 and 32 MB sticks and the system ran far better and crash-free than before. On a hunch, I re-installed the G4 upgrade. Not a hitch. Saving a couple of bucks is NOT worth that kind of aggravation! -- Wherever you go, there you are. - B. PETE said: I have 384 built-in-memory in my wallstreet; 128 MB bottom slot and 256 MB top slot. Can I put a 256 MB stick on the bottom slot without problems? Yes, but watch out for chip density. Here's a clip from an earlier discussion in the thread Adding RAM to WS II: Nils Said: On Fri, May 14, 2004 at 10:59:11AM -0400 or thereabouts, Dan K wrote: As many others have explained, the issue revolves around chip density. For specific details on what will work, read Apple's Wallstreet devnote: http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/Developer_Notes/Macintos h_CPUs-G3/PowerBookG3Series.pdf Nice! It appears that these machines support a chip density of 8M with a width of 32 bits. Even though that configuration isn't listed, it could be the next logical step. The pdf also states that the machine is to use SDRAM memory with a rating of 100MHz or greater. This would make sense as a recommendation because the 250 and 292MHz systems run on a 83MHz system bus. Where as the 233, 266 and 300MHz systems run on a 66MHz system bus. To make it less likely for customers to run into memory speed related issues, just tell them to use PC100. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
