that's my concern as well. I'll be purchasing a wireless station in the

running back into the office every time I need to print to my laser. I

I have that printer. I tested it out using wireless but have it
connected wired. That's mainly because there was already an Ethernet
connection there from the previous printer. I like the printer. It
takes a while before it starts to print but it works fine otherwise.

Is there an advantage to connecting the printer directly to the
router? (maybe no desktop at the router?)
precisely -- for now, I'm 100% portable. the old desktop is retired
(awaiting some upgrades), and the 17 G4 'book is serving me well. now
that I'm fully engulfed in the portable life, I would hate being
tethered to the desk for printing! ;)

There are a number of wireless USB printer servers available in the $50-$100
range and what they lack in Mac friendliness and documentation they can make
up for in price. After my original base station died this winter I did some
research and finally decided to buy another from Apple for three reasons:

1) it integrated the USB printer server with the base station and that made
it about $40 more expensive than the other stations/servers I was looking at

2) Apple's software which makes setting it up a breeze - but to be honest it
isn't hard to set up a D-Link or any other station. They use a web browser
rather than a friendly Mac program

3) firmware issues - oftentimes companies just don't get around to issuing
firmware upgrades that don't require a PC. Sure, I have a PC at home but the
less I have to use it the happier I am, and I really prefer keeping it
segregated from the internet.

When you buy be sure to do your research. There are some printers that
cannot be served and some that can be served in the PC world but not the
Mac.

a router that will let you print to a USB printer connected to the
router I'm not sure if I am following this exactly.
First, my situation. I use a Belkin router that has wireless (b) and 4
ethernet ports. My daughter has an iMac with an Epson USB printer. My son
hooks up his PC via ethernet and I use my Pismo w/ an airport card. I can
easily print over the network to my daughters Epson from my Pismo. No
running back to her desk every time I need to use it. So yes, with a Belkin
(for $40 from Best Buy) I can print using this USB printer.
Second, my question. Is there an advantage to connecting the printer
directly to the router? (maybe no desktop at the router?) Or is my situation
what you meant. My router happens to have a USB port, but I thought it was
for the internet connection. I'm at work, so can't look at the manual until
I get home.

Thanks for any enlightenment,
Dan-

Yes the advantage is that you can print to it w/o any other computer being
connected to the printer. That means that there does not need to be a
computer plugged in/turned on for the printer to work.

Many routers/cable modems have USB connectors but they are only for
network connection, not peripherals.

Re: WiFi...Why Apple over 3rd party

2004-05-17 Thread Mike Kauspedas
I have a US Robotics router and a gulp Microsoft wireless card that I
use for WS II. I had to pay a little more for the 3rd party driver to
work the MS card, but I was still $30 cheaper than an airport that
won't work in my system anyway. The router has a 108Mb capability and
was only $40 after rebate. Apple is cool, but I'm not...meh!

The only compelling reason to buy an Apple router is it's integration
with the software. Apple's AirPort utilities are pretty good. I've
got a Linksys router, though, and I'm quite happy.

As for cards, speaking as someone who has internal cards and PC Card,
there is MUCH to be said about having the card integrated into the
computer. It doesn't stick out, there's no fear of catching it on
something or breaking the antenna, etc. Quite nice, actually. Plus,
on the Pismo and newer 'Books, you don't have to worry about hogging
up the only PC Card slot you've got...

Two reasons for me.
When I bought a graphite base station (on eBay) I needed a wireless
router with a modem since I didn't have broadband where I lived. Since
moving, I do have broadband. I will probably upgrade the olde graphite
to an extreme base station for the USB port. I don't think any other

the router like the airport extreme. If there is, I'd like to know.

As far as routers go, the only reason to get the Apple base station is
that it is easier to set WEP. Personally I use a Linksys router/access
point without any problems. In my house we have a mixture of Mac and
Win machines so setting WEP is a little more tricky so I just leave my
network unencrypted.
As far as I am concerned the Apple base station is just way to
expensive. 802.11b/g are standards so any router should work.

Win machines so setting WEP is a little more tricky so I just leave my
 network unencrypted.
As far as I am concerned the Apple base station is just way to
expensive. 802.11b/g are standards so any router should work.

IIRC, it's the only one (or one of the very few) that permits you to
network with Apple Talk products. If that's a concern, checkout
http://macworld.com and do a search on wireless routers. Regardless, I
always believe it's good to make yourself aware of alernatives, strength
weaknesses, etc

FYI, I went with the Belkin 802.11g. Some problems with set-up (which
were soon resolved), and to date still a problem having my personal
website (dynamic ip via dyndns) appear on the net. Not a priority at the
moment, though, so I've not put alot of effort in figuring that one out.

Regardless, I've *loved* not being anchored by a cable.

Re: ...WiFi why?.....

2004-05-16 Thread Timothy Luoma

as the owner of a pc and powebook and a Linksys and an airport extreme I
feel I can offer the same reasoning that you use for owning other Mac
products: it just works easier.

Connecting a PC to Airport was simple. Connecting the Powerbook to an
existing wireless network was simple. Getting advanced features to work
was much easier with Mac hardware and Mac OS. The only problems have been
on the non-Mac parts of whatever Ilve had to do.

To me the ease of getting things to work is definitely worth the extra
expense, which, when you consider it over the life of the product, is
reallly a small amount.

IMO/FWIW
