Is there an advantage to connecting the printer directly to the router? I don't like the price of Apple's model, but that is a big advantage. There are a number of wireless USB printer servers available in the $50-$100 range and what they lack in Mac friendliness and documentation they can make up for in price. After my original base station died this winter I did some research and finally decided to buy another from Apple for three reasons: 1) it integrated the USB printer server with the base station and that made it about $40 more expensive than the other stations/servers I was looking at 2) Apple's software which makes setting it up a breeze - but to be honest it isn't hard to set up a D-Link or any other station. They use a web browser rather than a friendly Mac program 3) firmware issues - oftentimes companies just don't get around to issuing firmware upgrades that don't require a PC. Sure, I have a PC at home but the less I have to use it the happier I am, and I really prefer keeping it segregated from the internet. When you buy be sure to do your research. There are some printers that cannot be served and some that can be served in the PC world but not the Mac. david -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... First, my situation. I use a Belkin router that has wireless (b) and 4 ethernet ports. My daughter has an iMac with an Epson USB printer. My son hooks up his PC via ethernet and I use my Pismo w/ an airport card. I can easily print over the network to my daughters Epson from my Pismo. No running back to her desk every time I need to use it. So yes, with a Belkin (for $40 from Best Buy) I can print using this USB printer. Second, my question. Is there an advantage to connecting the printer directly to the router? (maybe no desktop at the router?) Or is my situation what you meant. My router happens to have a USB port, but I thought it was for the internet connection. I'm at work, so can't look at the manual until I get home. Yes the advantage is that you can print to it w/o any other computer being connected to the printer. That means that there does not need to be a computer plugged in/turned on for the printer to work. Many routers/cable modems have USB connectors but they are only for network connection, not peripherals. TjL -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: WiFi...Why Apple over 3rd party
I have a US Robotics router and a gulp Microsoft wireless card that I use for WS II. I had to pay a little more for the 3rd party driver to work the MS card, but I was still $30 cheaper than an airport that won't work in my system anyway. The router has a 108Mb capability and was only $40 after rebate. Apple is cool, but I'm not...meh! Re: ...WiFi why?.....
as the owner of a pc and powebook and a Linksys and an airport extreme I feel I can offer the same reasoning that you use for owning other Mac products: it just works easier. Connecting a PC to Airport was simple. Connecting the Powerbook to an existing wireless network was simple. Getting advanced features to work was much easier with Mac hardware and Mac OS. The only problems have been on the non-Mac parts of whatever Ilve had to do. To me the ease of getting things to work is definitely worth the extra expense, which, when you consider it over the life of the product, is reallly a small amount.
