PhotoShop. However, don't try it. I've tried it myself and when I select PhotoShop, I get a little dialog that says You cannot add keyboard shortcuts for the application PhotoShop. How do you like mouse keys? You'll find it at System Preferences - Universal Access - Mouse - Mouse Keys I know it, it is useful at times at both Windows and Mac machines, but it is essentially a big and ugly workaround. Nothing beats being able to Tab between dialog elements, use Alt shortcuts for elements or menus, etc. Unfortunately, this is where Mac OS seems to lag a little bit, even if some improvements were done in 10.1 or 10.2. Did you also try Full Keyboard Access? It's in Keyboard and Mouse system pref pane. It works well except for the dumb, 2nd citizen class Carbon ports (IOW, it works for Cocoa apps)... I have it on all the time. But maybe I'm missing something crucial? Let me give you an example. In Photoshop there's an option called Image Size... in Image menu. It does not have a keyboard shortcut. On Windows, I can press Alt-I and then I to chose it. It's quick and efficient. On Mac OS, the best I can do with keyboard is pressing Ctrl-F2 (awkward), then right arrow a couple of times, then I, then Enter. Effectively, it's easier to use the mouse. Is there an utility that'd let me do the Windows trick on Mac OS? Well, still in Keyboard Mouse, in the 'Keyboard Shortcuts' section, you can add your own keyboard shortcuts for all applications or specific applications. So, you could add a keyboard shortcut to that menu item in PhotoShop. However, don't try it. I've tried it myself and when I select PhotoShop, I get a little dialog that says You cannot add keyboard shortcuts for the application PhotoShop. I have no idea why is this. It's just been taken over by Stairways (the Interarchy people) and there's a new version out. It does grate a bit though, to have to spend money for something that should be part of the system. my trackpad blocks up sometimes on my 12 inch ibook g4 with 10.3.5 installed i either reboot to fix the problem or i plug in a usb wireless mouse that i have. Re: Another strange problem...
a quick reboot eh, how does one that doesn't have the option to control the cursor with the keyboard enabled do a quick reboot? Is there a key sequence for reboot? I've been lucky so far because i always had the usb mouse with me when it happened, if there is a key sequence i will need to write it down with the dymo and stick it underneath my ibook so i remember when it happens. I'm not gonna help you with that, but what's different is that you say that your USB mouse helped, while in my case nothing seems to work: MouseKeys, built-in trackpad, external mouse, etc. I would try changing the resolution to see if that fixes anything... but I can't do it while the mouse is not working. By the way, for all the bad things you can say about Windows, you can navigate it perfectly using just the keyboard... I've been doing that in Windows 3.0 for weeks without even having a mouse, and still occasionally resort to it. Funnily enough, back in 1984-5 there's reportedly been a big fight in the Windows 1.0 team over the use of keyboard and at least one person resigned seeing that Windows will be far more keyboardy than Mac... a quick reboot eh, how does one that doesn't have the option to control the cursor with the keyboard enabled do a quick reboot? Oh yeah, I usually just cold boot it by holding the power key. Of course getting everything saved first is a major PITA, but I'm no longer afraid of cold booting the system -- with journaled file systems and everything I don't feel I'm risking much.
