Re: AppleCare question

2004-09-02 Thread Gisela Drayton
Apple Care is a two-year extension of your original warranty and ends
three years from the date of purchase of your PB, i.e. if you bought
your PB today, 9/2/04 it would end 9/2/07. Apple Care is a two years
extension, not three years from whenever you buy it.

So, does anybody know how AppleCare really work?
Thanks!

Now that I've got a new PowerBook, I'm thinking later to get AppleCare. When
I got my previous PowerBooks, close to 2 years ago, it still had over a year
of AppleCare remaining because the original buyer was smart to buy it just a
little bit before its first year warranty expired.

Now, I was planning to do the same but a co-worker told me that it doesn't
work that way, that now, when you buy it, it starts from the original
 purchase date.

Your co-worker is 100% correct. Applecare is 3 year coverage from the
original purchase date of the unit.

Re: AppleCare Question

2004-03-02 Thread Seeker
ut there is another way to look at this. AppleCare must be a money making
business for Apple. Would anybody believe that Apple loses money on their
AppleCare coverage at the prices they charge? I doubt that. I think Apple
makes money on AppleCare. There must be many more people who buy AppleCare
and do not use it for repairs than those who do.

For what it's worth, the magazine Consumer Reports _generally_ considers
plans such as AppleCare to be a waste of money when taken out on _most_
appliances: refrigerator, ovens, microwaves, etc.

However, in a recent issue, they specifically noted that they thought
such plans a wise idea for _laptops_, because laptops are moved about, prone
to injury/damage, and easy to ship back and forth for repairs.

I normally never sign up for such plans, but if I bought a new Mac
laptop, I would.

Cheers,
bob

Re: AppleCare Question

2004-03-02 Thread Eric Morrison
Al:

Yup, without question you are correct. However, like all insurance, the
point is to spread the liability out amongst the whole population of
subscribers. Thus, if my computer chokes and it's going to cost $1,000
to repair, I've made out by paying $350 for three years of AppleCare.
If my computer doesn't choke, I STILL make out because I've paid for
indemnity against having to pay the $1,000 if my computer had in fact
choked.

The way I look at it is it is a win-win. Apple makes money on the
program, and I indemnify any potential loss for myself to the tune of
$350 over a span of three years. It's well worth it to me (having done
it both ways in the past) to bite the bullet and pay the upfront cost
so I don't have to worry about a large, unexpected expenditure. Plus,
Apple's service is freakin' great (in my experience)... and our company
used to use a third party warranty company (Service Net) and they
really stunk so I'm saying this in comparison to at least one other
warranty company (hey, I know Apple or AppleCare isn't perfect, I've
had my fights with them over the years, I'm just saying that overall
they are excellent).

I won't buy a computer without AppleCare (if I can't afford the
AppleCare I won't buy the computer) and I recommend strongly to
everyone I help get a computer that they buy it as well. To me, it's
just part of the price of having the computer.

With Applecare, you get a 2 year extension on your warranty to bring it
to a total of 3 years and this includes 3 years of phone support. When
you first buy a Mac, you get 90 days of what they call complementary
phone support.
In the box - you normally get next to nothing. Just a registration
sheet and usually a disk with a light version of Techtools pro.
You're right - it is a lot of money but it has always been well worth
it to me as both my computers needed extensive repairs which would have
cost far more than the cost that I paid for the Applecare warranty.

Applecare I have been able to send my machine back to Aople. Currently
I have Applecare on my G4 and the new PB. You also get phone
information if some software program doesn't quite work with your

Re: AppleCare Question

2004-02-29 Thread AKR
The Applecare service is definitely well worth the money and one
additional benefit that I forgot to mention in my initial response was
that it can be a great selling point when you are attempting to sell
your used Mac 2 years from now. If you still have 6-12 months (or
more) of Applecare left, it can be transferred to the new owner so they
have more peace of mind should they end up with a problem two days
after they get it home.

I sold my last iMac with 6 months of Applecare remaining and got a very
good price on it.

Re: AppleCare Question

2004-02-29 Thread AKR
With desktops, well, there it's a toss-up. In my experience (non
Powerbook) Macs either break right away (within the 1 year warrantee),
or don't do so for years and years, and things that do break are
reasonably cheap to replace (primarily HDD's and optical drives).
This is not completely correct. The repairs can be very expensive. I
bought Applecare on both of my iMacs. Both required costly repairs
just shortly after the end of the standard 1 year warranty. In fact,
on the first one - I bought Applecare just days before the end of the
1st year. 2 weeks later, smoke started pouring out the back of the
computer and it required several hundred dollars worth of repairs and
parts, not to mention labour. The Applecare cost me $149.00 CDN. The
repairs/labour were $980.00.

If you want peace of mind, and aren't handy fixing things yourself,
AppleCare is more valuable.

As for getting Applecare on your PB overseas, it may be problematic,
but the PB was purchased here it should be covered.
It could be problematic in a more remote area but Korea - I'm pretty
sure he would have access to Applecare warranty service there. Still,
asking is the best way to find out.

With desktops, well, there it's a toss-up. In my experience (non

drives).

I had the same experience with my iMac. It was giving me trouble just
before the warranty ran out, so I bought Applecare. It turned out to
need a new motherboard. I'm quite certain that paid for Applecare.
