Or is something else needed? You mean for warrantee coverage, proof of ownership and such? It should, here in the states you don't need to register anything to get such coverage, but I don't know about the UK. Hold onto the receipt; that's the main thing of proof of purchase. If you got Applecare, there should be instructions with it to ensure activation. - I think I vaguely remember somebody mentioning additional services for registering the Serial Nr. There's such a thing? If yes, does it make sense? (we are in the UK) Well, they send you spam if you give them your e-mail address and if you don't check the 'don't send me mail' box. - Battery: there was some advice for getting started on the right foot with the battery. Was it charging up for some time, or discharging it to the bone, baking, freezing, I can't recall. I remember the practice of discharging it totally about once a month and the discharge to 40% + cool it to maintain whwn not used for long times. The best procedure, as I understand it is to put the battery through several charge/recharge cycles right away. Charge it up, use it on the battery until the system says to charge the battery, repeat. If it's going to sit on the desk for a long time, only using the AC adapter, take the battery out. If you're going to store it, store it in a cool, dry place, preferably in a ziplock with a silicon dry pack. You don't need to refrigerate it, barring that you live in the tropics. Not sure about the initial registration, e.g. If it's enough to register it. If you have an Apple ID, then I would suggest you login into their support section and you should have an option that will tell you how many days remain on your warranty, if you have one. So, you'll know if you've been registered or not. Not sure about the additional services, never heard about it. As for the battery, read the user guide that comes with it. What I got from reading the manual and apple and other online stuff re: new powerbook batteries was this: Charge it up, then one deep discharge, to the point of laptop shutdown, to calibrate the time remaining feature of the power manager. Then don't deep discharge it again if you can help it, you'll lose some capacity each time you do that. Although you may have to do it again sometime in the future if the time remaining estimate gets messed up somehow. From reading of lithium battery tech in general, they really like to be kept topped up all the time, unlike other battery types you won't hurt them by having them plugged in always, you should actually get better a lifespan out of them that way. For long term storage, cooler, dry place (not a frig) at 40% charge is best. Like a basement cupboard maybe. They lose capacity whether in use or not so for lithium ion batteries, a couple laptop battery places said that it doesn't make sense usually to buy a spare unless you're really going to use it actively and get the most out of it while it is freshest. On my 1.5 month old 12 PB, I get 3.5 to 4 hrs work time on it, depending on what I'm doing. Lots more system uptime really since usually ends up asleep for a while until I come back to it. I still can't believe that I can burn a couple CDs, DVDs, etc while on battery and still have plenty of juice left to do other work. Nice! HTH.
