Re: Wallstreet memory 192MB ?

2003-07-04 Thread Kay Aleksic
I ran 10.1.2 to 10.2.5 on 233MHz with RAM from 192 - 384 MB and a 20GB HD.
It is reasonable to work with unless you are planning to do high-end graphic
or video editing.

I have since upgraded to Sonnet G4/500 and 512MB RAM which improves
performance a lot.

Btw, I bought the first 256MB from someone on eBay and the second one I
harvested from my fiancé's TiBook 667 when he upgraded to 1GB.

If you are looking to buy RAM, check OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/

I recommend loading up with as much as you can afford.
Especially if you are running OS X.

I haven't run OS X on it yet, but I may end up doing so...

How well do you think OS X will run on a 266MHz WS with
512MB (2x256MB) run in your opinion.

Is it worthwhile or will it eat up too much of the performance
 from other apps ?

192MB is the most that you can bet your house on having work. most
people find that 256 chips work, though.

Laurence, I have two WallStreet. The 14 screen WS has two 256 MB
modules-low profile. The Mac sees both for a total of 512 MB. The other has
a 256 on top and 128 on bottom. 384 total. Runs good and no problems.

Both Macs have Sonnet upgrades but they worked well before the upgrades.

You can increase Wallstreet's total memory up to 512 MB max. But you
must use 256 MB modules specifically rated for Wallstreet.

My WallStreet 266MHz has a 128Mb on the lower slot and a 256Mb on the top slot, but this is recognized as a 128Mb, for a total of 256Mb.

I tried to run OS X.1.5 on it but it was too slow. I've heard that X.2 it is better, but I'm hesitating... I know OS9.x well, and do not want to spend another $100 on a system that may be still too slow...

Best regards.

two different chips.

saying it takes two different chips is slightly misleading. they're both PC66 or
better SO-DIMMs - technically, the only difference is that a low profile SO-DIMM is on
a slightly smaller wafer. also, you can put a low profile SO-DIMM in both slots, if
you want.

More specifically, the memory controller on Wallstreet does not work with
newer memory module designs, and as a result will only see half the RAM.

It's not so simple, the two 'Books differ in their modules' ram-chip
arraignment requirements. A PB G4 module can likely be used in a Pismo,
but probably not in anything earlier.

For specifics, read the devnotes for the two products which can be found
here:
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/Hardware2.html

AFAIK, it can't hurt to try, but probably _won't_ work. I've got modules
256 and 512 in my Pismo which I intend to try (someday!) in one of my
WSs, if anything positive comes of it I'll mention it here.

OWC is pretty good about selling the correct stuff, here's a page of PB
product listings:

Firstly, thanks for a fantastic link!! Some info!!! :o)

Having read through the specs I find that the Ti 550 uses PC100 (or PC133)
while the 667MHz can only use the PC133 modules.
The Wallstreet uses 100MHz or greater

As for the size, the Ti 550 can only use the 1.5 modules which are the
same as the low profile module for the Wallstreet.
However, as for your chip arrangement point I cannot comment until
I've actually tried it.
Watch this space.
