turning them off some for 4 years, keep the power adapter on and the
occasional restart of course. just make sure that energy saver allows
them to sleep.

Waldo usually stays on though in sleep mode at times. At night, I go to

Up until recently, I've just been putting my TiBook to sleep, but now I
have CCC doing a backup at 2 o'clock in the morning, so it's on all
night.

I guess the longest time it's ever been switched off in the near 3
years that I've had it, is when it went back to Apple to have its hard
drive replaced under Applecare. They not only did the hard drive, but
replaced the chassis, which had the traditional Ti-acne, new rubber
feet and those rubber thingies that unsuccessfully try stop the screen
touching the keyboard. It's gorgeous - like new now. Anyone who's
bought a Powerbook within the last year and hasn't got Applecare, get
it quick!

I generally close my iBook and let it sleep. I only shut it down if I'm
going away for a couple of days and not bringing it with me, in which
case it gets hidden away (a determined burglar would probably find it,
but why make it easy?).

Cybertrough:

Should they be OUR reasons? Like Donald, I'd like to know if
this is a good idea for others

Leaving a machine sleeping is leaving it in a very limited on state.
Meaning that the power management circuits are charged all the time. For
example, in my 17 Powerbook that would leave the Backup Battery Board, the
DC in Board, the Bluetooth module, and to a certain extent the Logic Board
constantly under power. I don't want to risk having to replace any one of
these parts if the unit gets surged or one wears out more quickly from the
constant stream of electricity. Whether or not you know or believe this it's
true; unless you have some special regulator installed at your house (and
I'll bet none of you do), your electricity is constantly spiking and dipping
slightly. This is normal. Ask any electrician. Personally, I use a Belkin
UPS that has AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulation) to clean up the power coming
into my house from the utility pole. Things like refrigerators and
televisions are much more tolerant of line spikes than computers. I have
seen a house get surged and nothing was damaged but the iMac, and even
things plugged into the same power strip are fine...but the iMac couldn't
handle the rapid and drastic change in voltage. I also like to have my
memory heap dumped and temp files unloaded, so I use Macjanitor religiously
for clean-ups.

Apple's stance on the topic is that it's fine to leave your unit on
24/7/365. That's because when your machine breaks you will spend more money
at Apple and buy a new one. Apple also considers the Lifetime of a computer
to be about 18 months, after that they expect you to upgrade. So they
build their machines to last 2-3 years as a minimum. That way if something
breaks you will (most likely) be outside of your 1-year warranty period and
if you paid more money then your Applecare Protection Plan will cover you
for a total of 3 years from the purchase date. And I highly recommend an
APP on any powerbook. I bought it myself for my own book. Parts are just
too pricey for PB's.

What it really comes down to is this: My first powerbook was a PB100. I
have had PB's throughout the last 17 years, and aside from a faulty PMU in
my Wallstreet (common and well documented problem at Apple) I have had
absolutely no problem with any of them doing things the way I do things. I
sleep my PB when I am not going to be using it for up to about 6 hours...if
the span is going to be longer than that I shut it down. I also shut it down
every night and put it in it's Brenthaven bag to prevent dust from getting
into it and I regularly open it and clean it. You can do things the way you
feel is best, but for example, there is an article in the KBase that
attributes constant sleeping to problems with the Pismo series.

FWIW this debate has raged on endlessly in many different places.
Some folks leave theirs on all the time, others unplug them when they
aren't using them, others are somewhere in between.

There are arguments to be made for any. I think other than turning the
screen off (not just dimmed but off) there are reasons to believe one
over the other.

Personally I hate the length of time it takes to cold boot OS X. I
leave mine sleeping, but often it is plugged into a 450 APC UPS
overnight, so I'm not as concerned about the power flux problems. We
lived in Florida for 5 years and just about everything except the
microwave was on a UPS due to the major power storms.

I've read

This has been posted very recently posted on the iMac LEM list:
It has basis in the days of vacuum tubes. It has to do with the
Tungsten filaments used in the CRT type monitors. Tungsten has a
positive temperature coefficient of resistance; the cold resistance
being about a third of that at the operating temperature. So when you
turn on a CRT from cold, three times the current flows through the
filament until it heats up. The theory is: Multiple turn-ons stress
the filament and it can fail earlier than when it is allowed to run
hot (or reasonably warm) when not in use. (You may have noticed how
incandescent lamps sometimes burn-out at the time they are switched
on) There are ways to limit the initial inrush current to avoid this
kind of damage. With proper attention to design, this should not be an
issue with modern CRT based equipment. Nor should it have anything to
do with the LCD type monitors.
If anyone's interested more in this, look in the iMac list archive
(topic called Sleep, beginning of September) -- I assume that it's
publicly available?

Usually I leave it plugged in to recharge for the morning, closed, sleeping,

While more often than not I leave my iMac on at night, I always turn
off my Powerbook. I guess it just seems more vulnerable left on all
night, for some reason. In fact, until recently, I'd carefully pack it
and all of its stuff back in the softside briefcase I bought for it.
Now I often leave it, turned off and with lid closed, where I used it
last (on the couch, on the footstool, on the bed, by the iMac, on the
dining table...). Do you guys turn off your PBs at night?

In the 6 years that I've had this PowerBook, I've almost never turned
it off. I just put it to sleep when I'm not planning on using it
immediately. Including overnight.

I don't usually close the lid either. But then I don't have cats,
dogs or kids in the house. :-)

2004-09-14 Thread Larry le Mac
From: Claire Hart [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Do you guys turn off your PBs at night?
I have an AluBook 1GHz at work and I always switch it off,
though leave it open. No need the wear the hinges more
than I have to. I just leave it on my desk.
The other day I left it on as I had to catch a bus home and
it was still performing an upgrade and when I came in the
next day it was still warm (not hot), though I have an old
internal PC fan standing behind it on all the time and it's
raised at the back (stands on two rubbers from an old
Quadra 700).
Also, I just exchanged the battery (Apple free of charge
suspected faulty battery thing), which shows I did the right
thing switching it off.
I agree with you, better to switch a PowerBook off due to the
battery as opposed to an iMac or whatever.

Re: shutting down PBs at night

2004-09-14 Thread E. Moorhead
Hey Claire...
My Ti800 G4PB hasn't been ShutDown for a total of more than 3 weeks
in over +2 years of constant use, and then only under certain
circumstances of travel.

I DO ReBoot from ShutDown periodically; And run TTP4, DW and
MacJanitor religiously.

But from OM JAGUAR Instal, thru present PANTHER 10.3.5, (not including
yesterday's Security Update, (I let them 'marinate' a bit)), I've only
ever had 2 problems. Occasional SYSTEM hick-Ups after an APPLE or
VIREX UpDate. And a problem mounting DW's DISK. And ONLY their DISK,
in nearly 3 years of moderate Drive use. I've gotten 2 from them. And
both present the same, Hanging-without-mounting, while
Unable-to-Eject, problem.

And one, (for me cosmetic), ware-failure. 2 hair-line,
pencil-wide-apart stripes, top to bottom of the far right screen,
that appeared in the first 2 weeks of use.

Other than that; This machine has operated like a Swiss-Jeweled
charm. APPLE Solid, (Knock-on-Wood). Though, not an ImageWriter II.
. But then; Not many things in this life are.

I turn my PB off for two reasons: I know I won't be using it for several
days (that means vacations not involving the motorhome) or I'm sending it
back to the mothership for repair. Otherwise it sleeps on or off the charger
depending on the circumstances.

Mine is either plugged in and sleeping, or sitting on the couch or in
the bag sleeping. I usually leave it running all weekend on the laptop
stand in my office as I'm on it quite a bit, or I have processes that I
run overnight (iDVD encode/record and the like) My PB only gets shut
off if I take an airplane trip, or if I have to reboot for a security
update from Apple. It hasn't caused any issues over the last 1.5 years.

I don't have a powerbook, but my iBook has only been turned off once in
the year and a half that I have owned it and that is when I shipped it
back to Apple for service. I think that it would upset me to turn it
off every night, I'm not patient enough to wait for it to start up when

I don't have a powerbook, but my iBook has only been turned off once in
the year and a half that I have owned it and that is when I shipped it
back to Apple for service. I think that it would upset me to turn it
off every night, I'm not patient enough to wait for it to start up when
I want to get on it again.

I'm an Apple Certified Technician and I shut mine off every night and unplug
it from the wall.

I have my reasons.

There are many technical reasons to do so. I have had absolutely no sleep
or power related problems with any laptop I ever owned...aside from a bad
PMU in my first Wallstreet (which was beyond my control).

Forces of nature need to be considered as well. If you have an electrical
device plugged into the wall when lightning strikes down the street the
outcome is obvious.

Since I live in the Midwest and we have electrical storms quite often, I see
no reason to tempt fate by leaving my laptop on or even plugged in when not

The batteries will keep it powered in sleep for a week or more.
It's still your call but personally I prefer the convenience of
having it startup up from sleep in about 10 seconds.

Or is your primary concern power surges? If that's the case then,
yeah, you either put your faith in surge suppressors or unplug it.

I'm not sure what i the best way reply to the list
digest. So if someone can clarify this, I may not
bungle future replies.

The above subject has no value if response is yes I
do or no I don't. Perhaps the original author should
have said Why should I shut down PB.?
Opinions seem to divide on:
Yes, turn it off because there is potential for:
1. threat of power fluctuations/damage due to storms
etc.
2. damage due to unwanted invasion from local or
network
3. waste. some people don't put it in sleep mode (heat
concerns?).
4. battery longevity. Is it better to cycle, drain
etc. Most people don't know the totally different
approach to battery maint. re battery type.
5. damage to mechanical components: if on, it's worse
if bumped.

No, leave it on because there is potential for:
1. OSX is designed to work better that way
2. mechanical components function longer if not
cycled.
3, no greater damage if in sleep mode.
4. batteries work best this way. ( where do the
G-books change?)
5. less start-up time.

Am I all wet?
