Sounds like a TCP configuration problem on one of the machines. You might
try deleting the SLP Preferences file you mentioned previously. I think once
you can see the G4 in the Network browser on the PB, you'll be able to see
the G4 in USBPS.

One thing that happens to me occasionally is that my Powerbook gets set to
using Ethernet in AppleTalk and Airport in TCP/IP. Have you tried plugging
in the Powerbook to Ethernet? That might help you narrow down the problem.

USB printer sharing X->9

2003-01-23 Thread Clyde Kahrl
I have had intermittent problems with the 9 to X serving, but
it will work if you are sure that the printing is turned on at the
server machine properly in Classic. Try booting up from 9 and
seeing if it will work that way. Try installing the driver when
booted up from 9. Try updating the driver.
Make sure you clicked the check box in the control panel on
the server machine. I have published a printer in the past and then
not done the extra step of clicking in the box.I really think
you should try it booted in OS9 first and then in classic.
Obviously, classic has to be running when you go looking for the
printer--AND your server computer must not be asleep--if it's asleep
it won't publish. Check out your connection by checking the file
sharing from the server to the remote. (I know that's obvious but
some days obvious stuff isn't obvious).
The remote machine does not have to have a USB port in
theory, but sometimes I wonder if that affects the driver
installation. I have printed from machines without a USB.The
Chooser is irrelevant in the remote machine until you have
established a connection and identified and clicked on the remote
printer in the USB control panel. After that you will continue to
see the remote computers listed in the control panel, even if you are
disconnected from the network.
Try incense.

The PB can't see the G4 in the Network browser... see above... although I
_can_ access the G4's disk through Appleshare, and I can control it over
TCP/IP (Airport) with Timbuktu...

Are you sure that TCP/IP is set up correctly for both machines? Can both
machines see each other in the Network Browser using "Local Network"?

Thanks, Mick - the problem is that, after sharing the printer as you
describe above on the G4, when I do go to Network Printers and click Add, a
list of available network printers pops up. The HP isn't there; not under
Local Network or anywhere else. I've tried turning AppleTalk on and off; no
help. The only clue that I came up with is that I launched the Help Viewer
from the PB, and one of the options I had was a link to Set My Network
Neighborhood. The Applescript that ran (Set Registration Neighborhood) gave
me an error message SLP Preferences Not Found, even though there is a file
by that name in the Preferences folder. Any ideas?

Thanks again,

Marty Lindower

I think you misunderstood me and don't understand all the steps necessary to
get it to work. On the computer that is connected to the printer via USB,
you need to go to the "My Printers" tab in the USB Printer Sharing control
panel and verify that the printer is shared.

Then, on the other computer you need to go to the Network Printers tab of
the USB Printer Sharing control panel and click the Add button to add the
printer.

All of this needs to be done BEFORE you go to the Chooser.

If you've done all of this already, my apologies for re-iterating the
procedure.

Yes, it shows up in the chooser, but when I click on it, no actual
printer or port shows up.

Thanks, but as I said, it's turned on but the HP doesn't show up
under AppleTalk or Local Network, so I can't add it.

You need to install USB Printer Sharing on the Powerbook, turn it on and add
the printer in the USB Printer Sharing Control Panel. Only then will it show
up in your Chooser.

USB printer sharing X->9

2003-01-21 Thread Marty Lindower
Hi all-

I know this is possible, but just can't get it to work. My HP
Deskjet printer is hooked to my G4 running X.2, and it shares fine
with my iBook running X.2. How do I set up printer sharing so my
Wallstreet running 9.2.2 can print to the HP printer also? I read
somewhere that I'd have to start Classic on the G4 and start USB
Printer sharing from the control panel, which I did. The printer
shows as shared in the My Printers window. On my PB, I go to the
chooser, click the HP icon, but no printer shows in the right-side
pane. I've tried turning Appletalk on and off. I've tried setting up
the network printer in USB Printer sharing, but the HP doesn't show
up under AppleTalk or Local Network. HELP!!!

TIA,
Marty Lindower
