Not on a Wallstreet, which I think is what the OP was asking.

The drive mechanism in a Wallstreet isn't removable from it's casing in the
same way as Lombard/Pismo ones.

Well, it means the hinges are broken. Nothing one can do about that except
replacing the hinges.

I bought a used Wallstreet off ebay for the price two new hinges would have
cost me and had the complete screen replaced. As I had a 14" screen and the
bought Wallstreet only had a 13" screen I now oughta have the only
Wallstreet which lets you select screen resolutions in the Monitor control
panel... - so the technician told me.

A 20 GB hard disk is working just fine inside my Wallstreet.

Re: WallStreet DVD-ROM issue, perchance?

2006-02-01 Thread James Sanderson
I was able to get a Pismo on eBay for $200+s/h. I did spend money to
add memory and move to a 500 MHz processor. I think that I got
'lucky' because the comp's description included a pink-light-on-start-
up-but -goes-away-after-a-seconds issue. The latter hasn't bothered
me in the least. I've priced out the replacement. I think I'll be
with this one for a while.
I was happy with the WS for basic internet surfing and note-taking.
When I decided I wanted to use Keynote for several school
presentation, the WS became obsolete.

DVD-ROM modules with their accompanying PC-Cards are about as common
as chickens with molars. If you can get a working set for the price
mentioned, you are probably lucky.

Yep. Bad hinges are a well known "feature" of the G3 Series machines.
The only real fix seems to be replacement. I have seen stainless steel
ones being sold, but too many $$ for me. A stack of books behind the
display is much cheaper!

I have a 40gig Western Digital In a WS/300. Seems to work well, but
I haven't had it all that long and don't use them machine all that
much.

Want to Trade: Wallstreet DVD drive and card

2004-07-07 Thread Tom Zahm
I have: a perfectly functioning Apple DVD/CD-ROM expansion bay module
for Wallstreet machines, *and* the PCMCIA card that contains the
 decoder.

I want: a regular CD-ROM drive, and some cash.

Send offers to tpzahm AT newted DOT org

FWIW, the drive and card came with a machine I recently bought. I want
to "trade down" to lower the net acquisition costs.

Wallstreet DVD Drive

2004-05-16 Thread Ted
I had a 1998 Wallstreet Powerbook G3 with a DVD Drive and decoder card.
It came with the DVD drive and now that I have sold the Wallstreet G3 I
am selling the DVD drive and card. I thought the new owner may need an
install CD for the drive. Does someone have the install software they
can send me a copy of, or can someone tell me where to get it as a
download?

Contact me off list please.

Ted in Tacoma, Wa.

As most folks have already mentioned, OS X does not and probably will
never support DVD playback on Wallstreet (and Lombard too) via its own
DVD Player software. You can play DVDs with other software like VLC,
but it's a software-only decoder (so a slow CPU means choppy playback).
And I the on-board video card is only connected via PCI (or AGP 1x),
which limits the amount of data that the CPU can send to video, and thus
leads to more choppy playback.

Ted, I have a Wallstreet with DVD-ROM and a decoder card. The DVD will not
work with Jaguar. The DVD module in a Wallstreet is not supported by OS X.
If you want to watch DVD's then you have to boot up in OS 9 and have virtual
memory up to 400+. That works well for me. I have 10.2.4 and the DVD app is
installed but it does not recognize the DVD module when you start up the
app. DVDs do mount correctly on the desktop and the decoder card does mount
and show up correctly.

I get very good playback with my DVD module with very few limitations. It
just won't work while using Jaguar.

DVD playing is not supported in OS X on a Wallstreet, precisely because of
the decoder card that is not supported. Apple felt they had to put their
time and resources somewhere else or they were a little lazy so they decided
they wouldn't support it. Now, I think I've seen, back when OS X was
released and I was still using a Wallstreet, a few hacks that would describe
how to install the DVD player and maybe how to play DVDs using software
decoding, but that was a long time ago, so I might be wrong...

believes the program would be more elegant without the feature, or there is
already an equivalent and better way to achieve the same end. (Doing so is
not quite the same thing as removing a misfeature.) Reluctant featurectomies
are performed to satisfy some external constraint such as code size or
execution speed.

Because you also need the PCMCIA Decoder card that was sold with the drive.
See PowerBook Parts for details.

By 'run DVD's' what do you mean? Mount them on the desktop or launch
dvd player? Didn't the old G3 powerbooks require a DVD Decoder card?

Wallstreet DVD

2002-10-06 Thread jt

Hello,
I recently purchased a DVD drive and hardware decoder card for a
Wallstreet. The decoder card and DVD both mount on the desktop. When I
launch DVD Player I get a message that I need to install the hardware
card (it shows up in ASP). After doing a bit of research I found that
DVD was not available on the WS till the 292 MGhz model came out. Am I
out of luck on playing DVD on this Powerbook? Thanks for your help. JT
