This might be, but I never heard of it. I'd assume the CPU would adjust
it's speed to the appropriate divider matching the bus speed. I think
that in the Beige G3 at least , that is what will happen.
On the other hand, my experience with the Powerlogix 500Mhz G3 bluechip,
showed that you have to have the correct Mac Rom. Possibly Apple CPU's do
have the correct ROM, no matter what.
I did run my 266 CPU on the 83 Mhz original motherboard and it worked. I
did not check the speed, however. This was for a short time as the 83Mhz
board had problems.

I don't think so. I have matched several processors on one WS I and one
WS II boards and have had no probs, except for the Powerlogix 500Mhz G3
upgrade as mentioned.

Others may have more informed experiences.

Re: Wallstreet processor mitch-match

George -
As I've stated, I'm using a Wallstreet 300 w/ 320MB of some generic
brand RAM, no prob. Running OS X.3.4 with help from XPostFacto. I've
been using OS X on it since it was first released, and can say with
confidence that performance has steadily improved with each OS upgrade.
I have a 128MB RAM module from Newer that I replaced with a 256MB;
you're welcome to it for the cost of shipping. Can't guarantee that it
still works, though, but if you want it I can package it in a
static-proof pouch. My e-mail is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I am having all sorts of trouble getting Ram for my WS

And this AM, my desktop refuses to work at all (8500
with NewerTech G3 300). Blue Monday!

Wallstreet processor mitch-match

2004-06-07 Thread COCCORP
Hi, I recently obtained a WS 266mhz off a well-known auction webcite(!), with
the seller using the ol'
"gosh-I-don't-know-if-it-works-I-have-no-power-cord-2-test-it-with" shuffle; I have
had luck in the past, and the price was
righteous, so I took a chance...

Sure enough, when I received it it was acting erraticly; sometimes it would
startup; other times it would shut off for no reason & the fan and the green
light would cut on and stay on indefinitely.

I thought it might be a bad pram and/or charge board and/or processor, so I
commensed to dismantling it. Come to find out, it was a Series I motherboard
with a Series II(!) 266mhz processor!

I put in a 250mhz WS processor and it works fine now.

My questions (finally!) are these: I assumed that mis-matching a WS series I
or II motherboard with a series II or I processor would result in the laptop
not working at all. Eveidently not? Anyone have similar experiences?

Also, by mis-matching the processor/motherboard, is there any chance either
part could have been damaged?

Thanks...

Craig W.
