Jeff, what is the problem with changing the backlight
on, say, an old Wallstreet screen? I would like to do
it, but I'm not sure if it's a do-it-yourself-home
project. Is the Lombard the same problem?
George
I have never taken apart a Wallstreet, but the actual backlight
procedure seems to be the same. I have done that surgery on a 520,
5300ce and Pismo. It involves removing the LCD from the assy, then
taking apart the LCD to get at the backlight.

The LCD screens in Lombards and Pismos are different. The Lombard uses
a -124, while the Pismo has a -127. The connector is in a different
place, about a quarter-inch off. The LCD will work in either one, but
there is some stress on the flex cable.

The lower left hand corner of my Pismo is darker than the rest of the
screen. It looks like a shadow. Is this something repairable in a
fiscally responsible way? I can live with it if I have to, but I'd
like
to fix if possible.

TIA
Tom W.
Sounds to me like a backlight going out. It is fixable if you don't
mind doing a little disassembly, especially if the rest of the screen
works. There are plenty of broken Pismo/Lombard screens around that
still have good backlights. Where are you located?

That's what I was thinking. I have a Lombard that I was going to sell
since I got this Pismo. Sounds like I can use the backlight from that.
Do I need to find one of those manuals I am not allowed to ask about,
or would common sense and care enable me to switch the backlights?
I live in Memphis, TN.
Thanks, Tom W.
If you have a working Lombard, go ahead and sell that one rather than
scavenge it for parts. I have some broken screens, I can send you one
(or just the backlight). There are instructions available on the web,
actually the screen assy removal part isn't too tough. It's a little
harder to do the backlight, since you have to take the LCD apart too.

Here's a link to get the display assembly off.

I just wanted to make a comment (and I am top responding because that
is Mail.app's default and I don't know how to change it... I am lazy
butt too!).

I've had my Pismo since Sept. 2000 and noticed after a few months of
use that the screen would be pinkish on waking from sleep. There was a
lot of doom and gloom at the time on various lists and discussion
boards, speculation that the Pismo screens were bad. Some folks
apparently went an got screen or back light replacements.

Like I said, my Pismo would wake from sleep pinkish, but within a few
minutes the screen was back to normal brightness and color, so I just
lived with it.

I haven't had the strong pinkish tone since using Jaguar and now
Panther. The Pismo is darker in the lower left corner when waking from
sleep, but again, within a minute or two the brightness evens out.

Does your Pismo do this, is it okay after a few minutes? If so I don't
think there is much of a problem.

I've read abouth the pink screen problem, and that's not it. No pink
ever. I set the Pismo up side by side with the Lombard, and the Lombard
has a significantly brighter screen. I'm going to investigate purchasing
replacement screens or backlights. I don't think I'll mess with the
Lombard.
