Re: downloading Windows media player for OS X Tiger to listen to Internet radio program

2005-10-07 Thread Kris Tilford
I ran into this problem the other day when trying to fix a PC using
downloads from the Microsoft site to my Mac. I turns out the MS site
will only download correctly to MS Explorer browsers on any platform,
so you'll need to fire up Explorer and re-download. I don't know if
you follow any of this, but evidently both MS Intel write code to
make their servers work slower and less reliably with other
manufacturer's hardware. This is one of the main contentions in the
AMD-Intel lawsuit that's ongoing.

MS-DOS: /M-S-dos/ n. [MicroSoft Disk Operating System] A clone of CP/M for
the 8088 crufted together in 6 weeks by hacker Tim Paterson at Seattle
Computer Products, who called the original QDOS (Quick and Dirty Operating
System) and is said to have regretted it ever since. Microsoft licensed QDOS
order to have something to demo for IBM on time, and the rest is history.
Numerous features, including vaguely Unix-like but rather broken support for
subdirectories, I/O redirection, and pipelines, were hacked into Microsoft's
2.0 and subsequent versions; as a result, there are two or more incompatible
versions of many system calls, and MS-DOS programmers can never agree on
basic things like what character to use as an option switch or whether to be
case-sensitive. The resulting appalling mess is now the highest-unit-volume
OS in history.

MS doesn't usually play that game. They either lock you out totally
or something else failed.

Exactly what browsers did you try (incl version)?

What URLs were involved?

I don't know if you follow any of this, but evidently both MS
Intel write code to make their servers work slower and less reliably
with other manufacturer's hardware. This is one of the main
contentions in the AMD-Intel lawsuit that's ongoing.

Nothing to do with Intel. Nothing to do with hardware.

MS modified the standard html handshake that occurs between your
browser and their web server product. Essentially, they changed one
packet and eliminated another - streamlining the connection process.
If the browser recognizes this modified exchange quickly (only IE
does) then the server is able to establish the connection faster and
marks it as being with IE. If the browser doesn't recognize it
(not IE), then after a time-out, the connection is established
normally. This time-out has the effect of making non-IE browsers
seem slower. (Remember that your browser may open multiple/dozen
connections to a server, based on your preference settings).

Depending on how the server administrator sets things up, they can
lock out non-IE users at that point or they can slow down others, or
they can prioritize IE users, or ... well, many things :)

While this may seem like a sleezy tactic on MS' part, it should be
noted it's all controllable by the local server administrator.

That's wrong. On a PC, Windows update stuff only works via IE, but I
download files from MS routinely with Safari and Firefox. I rarely
even start up IE.

Re: downloading Windows media player for OS X Tiger to listen to Internet radio program

2005-10-05 Thread jocbr8
Hi, I hit the download button on the Windows media player website. An
icon with a program did not download. A document with code only
downloaded.Do I need to turn off my firewall to receive the icon and
program to unstuff an install?

I'm new to OS X Tiger. In the Sharing Preference, I have Network Time
checked; and, in the Advanced settings, I have marked Enable Stealth
Mode and Enable FireWall Logging. I did not mark Block UDP Traffic. Not
sure what that is.

I'm looking a the the Firewall Log. Looks like there are many entries.
Haven't had a chance to read the O'reilly book that goes with OS X
Tiger yet.

I'm wondering what UDP means and its significance. Any light someone
can shed on all this would be helpful. There is a live radio program on
the Internet I want to listen to but I need the windows media player,
evidently.

Thanks.

PS I have a new G4 iBook.

No. That sounds like an incomplete or corrupted download. Try here:

You will see LOTS of entries in the firewall, they will largely be
irrelevant.

Your firewall should not block any activity you initiate on your Mac,
like file downloads.

UDP is a type of network traffic, which, along with TCP runs on IP
networks (hence TCP/IP) http://www-net.cs.umass.edu/kurose/transport/
UDP.html

Basically, your computer won't respond to pings, it may not connect
via Bonjour (or Rendezvous as it used to be known), and some other
network utilities won't find it.

Re: downloading Windows media player for OS X Tiger to listen to Internet radio program

2005-10-05 Thread Eric Ayres

Hi,

I am a lurker and thought that I musht interject at this point. I am
a network engineer just an fyi. The UDP box is not your problem. UDP
in layman's terms provides a connectionless, unreliable transport
service and is generally used in one way communications that use
broadcast or multicast IP datagrams. These are usually associated
with internet gaming as there is NO guarantee of the packet arriving
to its destination. Applications that use UDP must supply there own
reliability mechanisms. I hope this helps with your UDP question...

Regards,

Eric
