Interchanging iBook G3 & G4 keyboards

2006-01-15 Thread Ruffin Bailey
I'm afraid I've mostly lurked on this list for a while and I
apologize if the subject has been covered before, but just in case
it's helpful... I certainly didn't find anyone who seemed to have
done the deed when I Googled this up a few times over the last year.

Short answers:

* You *cannot* use iBook G4 keyboards on iBook G3s without putting an
extension on the ribbon, which, if you don't mind, we'll say is a
nontrivial exercise, to put it mildly.

* You *can* use G3 keyboards on G4 with a few caveats. One, you'll
have to fold the ribbon like a "Z" over on itself, which is not the
recommended way of using a ribbon cable. Two, you'll have a slight
bow in the keyboard that'll make it poke up just enough you'll likely
scrape the screen with your keyboard's keys.

I had a G4 keyboard go flakey on me (never liked it as much as the
iBook G3 keyboard, and it finally acted so wacky I either had to
clean it #shudder!# or use it as an excuse for this experiment) and,
after pulling another keyboard from a limping iBook G3, the things
looked similar enough I thought it was worth a shot. So far, so
good. The bent-over ribbon does concern me a bit, however.

The iBook G4 keyboard doesn't have a particularly nice feel, imo,
though the metal keyholders do seem a bit more robust. I've had
issues on my G4 kybd with the space bar not being so responsive and
with random keys repeating at the slightest pressure (particularly
"h", fwiw). Taking a little out of a G3 keyboard's ribbon would seem
a nice way to get a good typing-feel into this very nice laptop. I'd
considered downgrading to an iBook G3 900 to get as much perf as I
could with the nicer keyboard, esp since Small Dog had told me that I
couldn't swap in a G3 kybd for the G4. Glad I found out differently,
so far. I'm not so sure they were wrong -- the keyboards *aren't*
interchangeable. But, again, you can take the G3's to the G4.

Anyhow, there you go. Hope that helps someone at some point.

Didn't seem easy when I looked at it - I didn't even consider it an option
when trying to repair a 14in

No idea, I've never looked at a G4 board.

Even within the G3 12in, there are a number of different board sizes and you
may need the metal frame as well as the logic board to do swap.

Nope.

The battery connector on the 12in is soldered on the logic board whereas on
the 14in they are on a cable off the board IIRC.

Nope.

The battery connector on the 12in is soldered on the logic board whereas on
the 14in they are on a cable off the board IIRC.

iBook G3 G4 12" 14" MoBos

2005-08-06 Thread Beniamino Cenci Goga
Given that the logic board of the 14" iBook G4 has the same size of
the 12" I was wondering if the are interchangeable, and, in case, if
it is possible to put the 14" G4 logic board into a 12" G3 ibook.

Re: Wallstreet vs iBook G3-G4

2005-05-07 Thread Beniamino Cenci Goga
I actually thought that the then 2003-04 crop of iBook G4s, maybe they
had 256MB, looked bad GUI-wise compared to my WS II 266 with 384 MB and
10.3. That was like strange.
I moved from the Wallstreet bluechip G3 500 with 512 MB RAM, to the
Aluminium G4 1.25 with 1GB RAM and I was happy.

But what if I had moved to an iBook G4? I would have complained quite a lot!

I agree this is the reason as the g4 bluechips aren't faster than the
500Mhz+ PB G4s in tests I've seen. iBooks, except maybe for the latest,
seem crippled.

My wallstreet w/bluechip 466 G3 will run many programs faster under OSX
than my 800 G4 iBook, even though I have 640 mb ram in the iBook and
only 256 in the WS. I think it has to do with the difference in L2
cache size as much as anything. Just speculation though.

iBook G3 -> G4

2005-04-10 Thread Beniamino Cenci Goga
The Logic Boards in the whole white iBook line (G3, G4, 12" 14")
occupies only the left side and since the ports are located in the
same position I was wondering if it is feasible to swap them; i.e.
upgrade a G3 to a G4.

I have the opportunity of getting an iBook G4 logic board.
