This thread is dead. And so are any related threads with new titles. Kill
it. It's time to move on. Let's get back to what this list is all about.
The holidays always bring stress to these e-mail lists, but there is really

are you kidding me??

THE INTERNET IS A NETWORK. A LARGE NETWORK OF NETWORKS.

christ all mighty. this reaffirms my previous comments of the
*INCREDIBLE* amount of unknowledgeable spew on this list.

yes. websites /are/ on bandwidth limits. its how web hosts make their
money. sending data from one computer to another computer, via tcp/ip
protocols (even smtp) is not the same as downloading static data from an
http server. yes, it may be using their same bandwidth, but again, to
sent plain text data to a mail server is probably 8-10k at best. not an
issue. i run a web host myself, and am close friends with someone who
runs one of the major web design/hosting firms in this area (has
international clients, as well as all the main businesses around this
area) i understand how bandwidth quotas work. its an email list. its
what its here for. to transmit text through a mail server, to another
mail server. not to be rude, but honestly do you think i give a damn
about someone's bandwidth from a mailing list? he set the list up, to
receive and transmit. thats what it does, and is doing. if he didnt want
this to occur, would the list continue? no.
hell, look at the bottom of every message transmitted. i can see 7 lines
of text that to me could be replaced with one.
internet newbie? hahi do more with the internet than email and http.
definitely not a "newbie" - ive got years of experience under my belt,
including work experience.
sorry, i think i might have cost someone a few cents for sending such a
large message. guess i should cut this short.
(btw, yeah, i dont care how much i cut and pasted - if the owner has a
problem with the amount of text im transmitting on the list that he set
up, with full knowledge of what running a mail server entails, i'll
*gladly* paypal him .05c that my overage might have caused.)

incredible.

It might surprise you to know that on websites there ARE bandwidth
limitations. And if you go over them, you have to pay extra if you're
the webmaster hosting the site. To ignore bandwidth issues even on a
mailing list like this is to be truly rude and inconsiderate of others.
If all of this comes as news to you, you truly must be an internet newbie.

And to others on this list who have seen fit to grumble and growl about

the ignorance amazes me.

you sir, need to read a book about how networks work.
if you think that the collective "internet" with their 10k plain text
signatures is slowing your ability to check stock prices and send
pictures of the kids to grandma, you're insane.
you make it sound like there is a bandwidth shortage or
somethinglike we're going to be limited to the amount of data
transfer available!
*sigh*
there are some great minds on this list, providing useful knowledge,
(laurent comes to mind) however unfortunately the majority of it anymore
has become people's incorrect assumptions, incorrect data, and countless
lines of "i learned this from a guy at work who's brother works for a
computer store" "help"

"you cant use PC100 ram in PC133 slot"

im outta here. if i need info, ill look for it in the form of internet
forums and IRC.

Here's an idea -- why not read the list netiquette page instead of
debating in a vacuum? Here's what it says:

Please keep your signature concise. Six lines or less is best.

No, that is wrong. Go back and restudy, do not pass GO. Since the early
days of the internet, no sig file is supposed to be more than SIX lines
of plain text *maximum*. And although six is "less than 10", when you
post a statement like that, people will assume wrongly that sig files
including 9 lines are ok. Long sig files take up way too much bandwidth
and add considerably to a digest form of a list - especially when you
have so many list members who continue to quote much more than the reply
demands, with even the sponsor blurb at the end of the digest repeated
over and over and over
