Re: screen sizes vs. reality

2005-01-04 Thread Jan Musil
Amber: Maybe you just did not notice how many people on the plane watched
the same movie as you did :-).

Personally I prefer my new 12'' over the 15'' that I had about a year ago.
It is easier to transport and I can use it even when the person in front of
me reclines their seat. Display quality is quite OK and at home I use the
large Apple Cinema Display. My typical use is similar to the one described
by Andrew yesterday. One useful application with this small display is
CodeTek VirtualDesktop Pro that enables you to define virtual desktops and
assign specific applications to them. That enables me to work more
efficiently by grouping applications that are typically used side by side -
iPhoto and Photoshop Elements on one screen, Development Environment and
Terminal on another screen etc.

Just my 2 cents to this discussion.

about a year) and after having to open every single folder under pictures to
find my photos, such as my old 2002 - January folder, which had changed

 them organized.

I'd have to assume that you have need to work on photos *outside* of
iPhoto? Otherwise, create your organization scheme *within* the program
(left-hand pane; similar to playlists in iTunes) and all should be well.
If you *on occasion* need to use a pic outside the program, just export
it.

If you need to work a lot outside the program, use something else (graphic
converter, for example). It'll let you organize outside the program to
your heart's content, then treat you to unrestricted browsing within.

But viewing of the screen by more than one person is definitely not as

The 12 Aluminum's speakers actually have midrange and something almost passing
for bass, and sound far richer, at about the same vollume as those of the
Pismo. I
am comparing them side by side, and the Pismo's 2 speakers don't come close to
the sound provided by the 12 Al's 3 (2 regular and one midrange that Apple
misnames a subwoofer).

I think the 12 is a great little portable and you're right, it does play
DVD's etc well.

By Photoshop, I meant I do a significant amount of photo restoration so I
need as big a monitor as possible as it is tedious enough work at the best
of times. Even the 15 is a bit small - I am looking forward to getting a
20-23 monitor sometime this year.

In any case, I think it does boil down to personal preference regarding the
size of the laptop/screen. I really like the 15 and don¹t regret the
decision at all even though the trade off is that I have to carry an extra
pound with me whenever I take it out. Still, worth it for me given that I
do a lot of Photoshop work while I'm traveling as well as watching DVD's
etc.

Clearly the 12 is working well for you and that's great.

However you could use a program called iPhoto Buddy that allows you to

currently around 20 root directories with names that mean something but
under that it is all iPhotos standard naming by date. Only issue I
don't like is having to close iPhoto to change to another library.

Re: iPhoto (was: screen sizes vs. reality)

2005-01-03 Thread Andrew F.
Iphoto, at least in the current version, makes all kinds of folders within
folders that appear to have nothing to do with organizing pictures. There
are folders for thumbs, and cryptic names to these folders and the folders
inside them. I used it for a while last year (I have only been in OSX for
about a year) and after having to open every single folder under pictures to
find my photos, such as my old 2002 - January folder, which had changed
and scattered photos that used to (in Windows) be organized the way I wanted
them organized.

I honestly don't care for the way iTunes does it either, but since I
download music and manage the playlists on two iPods, it is a necessary
evil. While I never liked Windows Media Player, I did like that its
playlists, rather than text or whatever files, could be the contents of a
folder on my PC. I'm sure iTunes has a way of doing that too, but like
iPhoto, it just sorted my music the way IT wanted to the first time, and it
has stayed that way.

I agree it's a bit annoying but whenever I want a picture, I go in iPhoto,
retrieve the picture and then export it. As an added bonus, I can easily
choose the resolution and the quality, so depending on the use I'm planning
to do with the picture, I might export it at a lower resolution for email or
full resolution for including it in a document to be printed. What annoy me
a bit more is all the space that those pictures and all the supporting files

And don't forget that the arcane file structure of iPhoto makes it more
difficult to store those pictures off the hard drive. I have all of my 2002
and older photos on a single DVD (with a duplicate of that DVD just in
case). I upgraded to a 5MP camera in 2003, so I use a few more DVDs, but
once I have about 3.5-4GB worth of photos on the hard drive, I like to
offload them, keeping the recent ones on the hard drive.

Re: screen sizes vs. reality

2005-01-03 Thread Andrew F.
One surprising thing on the 12 is the quality of the sound from the
built-in speakers. When I'm in a hotel room the sound is good enough when
watching DVD movies that I rarely bother with headphones. I've not tried
the sound in the 15 or 17, but in comparison the sound on the Pismo is
downright wimpy, as is that on my friend's TiBook and my coworker's current
generation 14 iBook.

screen sizes vs. reality

2005-01-01 Thread VicNaz1
OK, I had a person give me a hard time about a 12 inch LCD screen size and I
want to know, do people genuinely have serious complaints about 12 inch
screens? I have two units with 12 inch screens, on with a 15 inch, one with a
9.5
inch (my PowerPC PB540c) and even an old black and white PB 170 with a 640 x
400
screen.

I find that 12 inch is fine. My blueberry iBook is a wonderful, use-able unit
and the only time I have a problem with screen size is when some dufis
designs an application program with too many pallets and menu pannels that
can't be
resized or hidden.

OK, here's the kicker, the complaint wasn't about a 12 inch LCD on a
powerbook or iBook, it was my father's current wife complaining about the
heavily
upgraded, 500MHz G3 powered 20th Annaversary Macintosh. I have one just like it
and it's one of the finest units ever designed, essentially a PowerBook in a
desktop case with a fantastic sterio built in.

Back to my original question, do people have genuine issues with 12 inch
screen size?

Victor

Re: screen sizes vs. reality

2005-01-01 Thread Marcin Wichary
Back to my original question, do people have genuine issues with 12
inch
screen size?
Of course they do, but people will have issues with basically
everything, because computers are used for so many things.

If you're an average graphic designer, 12 inches is just too small. The
1024x768 resolution doesn't provide enough real estate for all the
palettes. In theory, you can make the resolution (density) bigger to
some extent, but then the pixels will be just too small for human eye.
You will have to make the widgets/fonts bigger, and you're back to
square one. Remember you're talking about people who Apple designed
30-inch LCDs for. Including the possibility of putting two of them side
by side.

For other uses, 12-inch displays might be perfect. Keep in mind that
people were using 9 Macintoshes (or even those tiny 5 screens on
Osbornes earlier) and getting their work done.

(I've deliberately left out the distinction between portable and
stationary computers, which was absent in the original question.)

I have and still use a 366 graphite iBook and I bought a new PowerBook
around 8 months ago 12 with a superdrive and 768meg of ram. I like the
size of the PowerBook and really don't have any issues with the smaller
screen over the 15. I have used a 17 PowerBook from time to time
(brother in law's) and though it is nice it not pleasant to lug around,
the biggest plus being the screen real estate that you have. I still
use the iBook and don't have any problems with the screen size outside
of resolution limitations for some of the new programs, but I can deal
with it.

Re: screen sizes vs. reality

2005-01-01 Thread Andrew F.
12 was the big-size in 1997, and remains a comfortable size for a laptop
screen. 14 or larger is great for extended viewing or poor eyesight.

What really matters is resolution, with 1024X768 being the minimum useful
resolution today as many websites are simply wider than 800 pixels and
horizontal scrolling is a royal pain. Of course, all of Apple's current 12
panels are 1024X768, as is their 14, so the only real difference is the
actual size of the pixels, not how many there are. 12 is a comfortable
size, 14 is just a little bit more comfortable, but at a price in size and
weight that is just too high for a truly portable machine.

Honestly I consider my 12 Aluminum to be a bit too large for frequent
travel and would prefer something the size and weight of my old Toshiba
Portege (11 screen, same 1024X768 resolution, no optical drive and 3lbs),
but Apple doesn't make one. For home use, I'm getting quite attached to
this Pismo I just bought.

I have a fifteen inch screen iBook and have used a 12 screen iBook.
They have the same resolution (1024x768. I prefer the 15 because
it's easier on the eyes. But the 12 is quite useable and amazingly
clear. I think if I were to use one steadily it might get to me. I
think it comes down to what you are comfortable with.

Newer screens are usually sharper. I also have a collection of older
powerbooks and this iBook screen is a lot better.

2005-01-01 Thread Tim Collier
I'm using a 12 inch iBook (G4) and I love it. I have no difficulty with
reading ANYTHING. I use Word and Photoshop on it and it's just fine. Now,
some people will complain.but this iBook is fast and very portable. I
use it more than my desktop.
My wife just replace her old 12 inch powerbook with a 14 inch iBook because
she didn't like having to use her reading glassesbut she used the
powerbook for over 2 years.
12 inch display is just fine. Now my 20 inch G5 iMac is really enjoyable,
but I can't pick it up and carry it around with me.

Re: screen sizes vs. reality

2005-01-01 Thread Al Poulin
It seems that many of the answers flowing here on this New Year's Day
are missing the point of the question. The original poster's father's
wife is apparently a middle-aged to older person. But we do not know
whether her corrected eyesight is 20/20 or 20/100.

Yes, a 12 inch screen may be a serious hindrance for someone with less
than average eyesight. There are many eye conditions that will
preclude use of a 12 inch screen at 1024 x 768 resolution. In one
example, a person with cataracts may fail reading that 12 inch screen,
but the same person after cataract removal and artificial lens
replacement with rejuvenated vision at 20/20 or better can now enjoy
that 12 incher.

screen sizes vs. reality

2005-01-01 Thread Gary Goldberg
I have a 13.3 Wall Street.

Perhaps I'm spoiled by the external 17
monitor I've used the past few years to
made surfing and working easier, but
when I travel I find the smaller screen
size confining and some smaller print
on websites harder to read.

Best reason for using an external monitor
at home if you have a smaller screen:
it prolongs the life of the screen, the
most expensive part of the laptop!
