JCL: /J-C-L/ n. 1. IBM's supremely rude Job Control Language. JCL is the
script language used to control the execution of programs in IBM's batch
systems. JCL has a very fascist syntax, and some versions will, for example,
barf if two spaces appear where it expects one. Most programmers confronted
with JCL simply copy a working file (or card deck), changing the file names.
Someone who actually understands and generates unique JCL is regarded with
the mixed respect one gives to someone who memorizes the phone book. It is
reported that hackers at IBM itself sometimes sing Who's the breeder of the
crud that mangles you and me? I-B-M, J-C-L, M-o-u-s-e to the tune of the
Mickey Mouse Club theme to express their opinion of the beast. 2. A
comparative for any very rude software that a hacker is expected to use.
That's as bad as JCL. As with COBOL, JCL is often used as an archetype of
ugliness even by those who haven't experienced it. See also IBM, fear and
loathing.

ROFLMAO. Rememberies... Long time ago in a state far away, I was
working at the computer center at college. One of the freshmen
programming classes used our batch machine. The professor gave them
a sample JCL block to put around their card decks, that started with:

//JOB the professor's name

At the bottom of the instructions, it said to replace her name with
theirs. But we all know that students can't read! uh oh.

Picture it... The night before the first assignment is due. The
student area of the computer center is *crowded* with kids hyped on
coffee and Jolt. The flood of decks is so big, the batch machine is
falling farther and farther behind. Turnaround is over an hour.

We take a rack of cards into the machine room and run them. An hour+
later, we come out with the cards and box or three of printout,
rip'n'sort 'em, then give the whole mess to a runner to take the 'em
up to the professor's office -- because every job had her name on it!
The students are staring at us - the panic growing on their faces ...

A. JCL. Gotta love it.

Dan -

Small point, but worth clarifying.

Do you mean no other apps running or open? Should one shut down
everything when backing up with CCC?

I usually don't touch my Mac while it's going through its backup
procedure with CCC.

Would you confirm that this is the correct way to do backups???

Thanks, bob

Yes.

Good.

Yes.

Each application running has the potential of changing the HD and/or
locking files so the backup job totally misses them. That's bad.
You want the backup to be as complete as possible.

As I said, a few months back people on a list (can't remember which,
I guess I'm on to many) there was a discussion about how CCC would
not make a boot drive of OS X.4. It may have been fixed since then.

I tried and it would not boot, it copied data but could not boot. But
SuperDuper! made me good boot drives. I have duped them on to
firewire drives and can boot this Pismo from 4 different partitions I
have on one drive. Did a similar thing with a pocked drive too.

I had no problem cloning my 10.4 startup partition a few times
  using Carbon
Copy Cloner. What problem did you have?

In my case, CCC gave several errors claiming not to be able to copy certain
files (all belonging to the System folder, if I remember correctly). I tried
several times and errors seem to affects random files. I eventually I gave
up and created a Disk Image of the boot partition instead, burned it to DVD
and I am able to restore at will on any partition using Disk Utility.

Re: system backups

2006-01-12 Thread Art Richard

Sandra,

With OS-X just backing up your drive may not give you a drive that
you can start from (which you could do prior to OS-X). Here are ways
to make a backup OS-X drive that can be a startup disk:

1. Use Carbon Copy Cloner, or

2. Use Tri-Backup, or

3. Use Apple Disk Utility (with care) as follows:
a. Open Disk Utility.
b. Select the startup volume from the left side list.
c. Click on the Restore tab in the main window.
d. Drag the startup volume to the Source entry field.
e. Select the backup volume from the left side list and drag it into
the Destination entry field.
f. Check the box to Erase Destination (if you have not already formated
the backup drive).
g. Double check that you have the proper drives selected and then click
on the Restore button.

h. Go get a cup of coffee; this will take a while.

Once you have a backup drive capable of being used as a startup
disk, you and do the same thing to copy the backup drive to your new
internal drive.

3. Use Apple Disk Utility (with care) as follows:
a. Open Disk Utility.
b. Select the startup volume from the left side list.
c. Click on the Restore tab in the main window.
d. Drag the startup volume to the Source entry field.
e. Select the backup volume from the left side list and drag it into
the Destination entry field.
f. Check the box to Erase Destination (if you have not already
formated the backup drive).
g. Double check that you have the proper drives selected and then
click on the Restore button.

h. Go get a cup of coffee; this will take a while.

Once you have a backup drive capable of being used as a startup
disk, you and do the same thing to copy the backup drive to your new
internal drive.

Retrospect doesn't seem to do the same total operational back in 10
that it did in previous OS versions. As I would rather not reinstall
all my software again from scratch, is there a simple way to move the
operating system to the new drive?

Re: system backups

2006-01-12 Thread Alan Miller
As I said, a few months back people on a list (can't remember which,
I guess I'm on to many) there was a discussion about how CCC would
not make a boot drive of OS X.4. It may have been fixed since then.

I tried and it would not boot, it copied data but could not boot. But
SuperDuper! made me good boot drives. I have duped them on to
firewire drives and can boot this Pismo from 4 different partitions I
have on one drive. Did a similar thing with a pocked drive too.

Copy Cloner. What problem did you have?

If you are using OS X.4 Carbon Copy Cloner is not updated. At least
not a few months ago when I needed to do this.

I used SuperDuper!
