Thank you both for the fast replies! Got me thinking anyway!
I don't think I'd prefer that flash drive style SD reader.
There's some nice multi card hubs at macsales I've been eying. It also
includes a USB hub.
I dunno. I'll think about it. I have these USB PCI slots I've invested
in and I don't think the flash drive style would work well, it would
probably take up two slots in width. Does it?

Thanks!

Re: A question never asked? until now...

2009-11-25 Thread Michael G.M.
I believe you can use a standard equipped Digital camera or camcorder
properly attached to your Mac for iChat and AIM. I've never bothered
with it either though. I remember all the scares I was getting about
iChat years back with the
security issues. Screen sharing and ichat seem to be the domain for
lawyers to me, honestly. (That's just my opinion) I have used
SeaMonkey's IRC a time or two when something was really pressing for
me to know about SM. Those guys are really helpful, btw.
I'm really not all that interested in it. Kinda reminds me of the TV
phone that never went far.
It's all a matter of preference, I may try it sometime. I do have a
yahoo account, though I rarely ever use it.

Re: New SD camera card reader

2009-11-25 Thread Wtob327
I picked up the new SanDisk Image Mate All In One a few months ago after
reading about it in the Shutterbug Magazine to replace my older, clunkier,
San Disk reader. This one, which is about: 3/8" thick x 1 1/2" wide x 4 or
5" high and comes in two parts, the reader and a tiny three prong base,
was supposed to be ergonomically designed, space efficient, and ascetically
pleasing...and oh yeah, faster too on the data transfer side of things
according to that and other reviews.

Well, the 2 part unit spends more time separating with the reader falling
down onto the floor instead of sitting on the desk...the reader, which
attaches magnetically to the 3 prong base...refuses to stay attachedvery
unstable and falls apart if the desk is bumped due to the very weak
magnet...always thought for some reason that magnets adversely affected disks,
cards, etc! Maybe why it's so weak?

This is the second unit...the first went back to SanDisk to be traded
out(after the store refused to take it back...some off the wall policy...never
bought from them again) when the different card slot tolerances were so far
off that NO CF card would fit the slot, nor would an SDHC! This one feels
like the cheap plastic casing is about to separate every time I push in or
pull out a card! It is fast though in comparison to my old one, which
still works, very slowly in comparisonand is much bulkier, tooand
SOLID, both in build feel and stability on the desk (if you bump it or have
any
contact of any sort with it, it just sits there refusing to fall apart).

So, is it faster that other readers Yes. Is it sturdy No, it has
a very cheap feel to it. Is it affordable About $32.00 + Tx. Is it
a good buy??? Subjective. Only fully appreciated by the user who's into
grinding (from the prongs going in and out of the CF Card holes and the
plastic to card contact) sensations like those experienced from manually
focusing a camera lens at the beach after it was dropped in the sand.

It used to make a bigger difference than it does now with the newer,
higher bit density platters.

This article might be of interest: "Should You Be Looking For A Hard
Drive Upgrade?" Tom's Hardware - 2009-08-19
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/hard-drive-upgrade,2377.html

The article compares the performance of an older and a newer Samsung
drive. The new one is a 1TB Samsung F2 which I expect is equivalent to
the 5400RPM F2 you're looking at. Here's an excerpt:

"The F2 EcoGreen drives comes with 32 MB cache memory, which is four
times more than the SP2004C. But it spins at only 5,400 RPM.
This isn’t a reason to be scared in the performance area, though, as
this drive still delivers 107 MB/s and hence provides almost twice the
throughput of the 3-4 year old P120 drive."

Clearly ~100 MB/s ain't too shabby. It still won't be limited by your
1.5Gbps theoretical max SATA bandwidth (~185 MB/s??). Other aspects of
your system ... like your CPU performance and max memory transfer rate
... will probably hold it back more.

While you might possibly get a bit better performance by going with a
7200 RPM drive, I don't think with your system you'd really see a
noticeable performance improvement from the extra rotational speed.

You might also take a look at the site http://diskcompare.com. The
site appears to be pretty an indirect way for newegg.com to try to
sell more hard drives. But if you keep that bias in mind, it can still
be a useful way to locate recent hard drive reviews from the various
hardware sites on the Internet.

In real use there is no difference in SATA 1.0 and SATA 2.0 for single
HDs. There is also no difference in speed for RAID 0 (stripped) pairs
of two HDs. The only place you might be able to see a real world
difference would be a RAID 5 array of HDs. It also might be faster to
use Solid-State Drives (SSDs) instead of mechanical HDs, but these are
still very expensive.

I know this from experience. I mistakenly thought that the SATA bus
speed was a limitation, but it's really the latency of the HDs that is
the limiting factor, and latency hasn't changed much at all. Also,
some SATA1 controllers are essentially SATA2 with the exception of
support for rarely used feature called SSC (Spread Spectrum Clocking),
so an SATA1 & SATA2 controller could be pretty much identical.

New Disks in G5

2009-11-25 Thread Ted Treen
Hi All,

I have an early 2005 G5 dual 2.0, maxed out at 4GB RAM. I want to put
some huge drives in it, and am looking at Samsung F3 1TB 7200rpm drives.

There are places (in the UK) where I can get the Samsung F2 1.5TB drive
for not a lot more, although it's only a 5400rpm drive.

I'd be grateful if someone with greater techie knowledge than me could
advise me on whether the fact that my G5 is SATA1 so 150Mbs as opposed
to300Mbs SATA2 is going to mean the 1.5TB will not be noticeably slower
in use.

I currently have two Seagate ST3320620AS 320GB 7200rpm drives in there,
and they are perfectly fast enough for my use, although they're getting
a little full now.

Thanks,

Ted

Has anyone tried the 64mb ATI Radeon 9600 Pro shipped with 2004 PowerMac G5s
in older G4 towers?

My friend`s G5 uses this card and I would like to know if it could be
replaced by something better and moved to the G4 Gigabit. This would be a
symbiotic move between the Macs!

Searched Google but it isn`t clear if this card can be used in AGP x2 slots!

Hi

Under Leopard you can share screens in ichat, it means whilst
screensharing you can watch or use your mouse and keyboard to work on
the other mac.
You start a video conference and then invite them to share a screen,
they have to give you permission.

For the time, the 32MB Radeon 7500 was a significant upgrade from the
16MB Rage. The other option is a GeForce 2MX. IIRC, they were pretty
much top of the line then. Twice the vram and faster processor yielded
a significant speed bump.

Here is a link to a Barefeats test of the Radeon, GeForce and the Rage
in a 466 DA.

http://www.barefeats.com/graphiX.htm

While the DA has a 4X AGP, the speed differences will be similar to a
2X slot. It shows the Radeon and the GeForce as anywhere from 5% to
300% faster than the Rage Pro. I would go with one of those as a bang
for the buck test.

Now if you have games that run under OS 9, there is a pci card that
blows them away, the VooDoo 5 5000. The meanest, badest, fastest pci
video card, but not supported under OS X.

HTH,
Len

Gorka , I use my dual 533MHz Digital Audio ( only about a year younger than
yours ) - OS10.3.9 , 1.5Gb Ram, 256mb video card, 80gb + 120Gb HDs as my main
machine 8 hours a day drawing CAD plans for houses.
It is stable , fast ( fast enough for my CAD program anyway ) easy to work on
and easy to expand.
I earn a good living using this machine so your GigE still has many useful
years left in it for sure.

What budget are you setting for the video card ?
Look at the games your kids intend to play on this machine then see what the
min system requirements are for each game. That should be a fair indicator of
what you need to buy.
A nice upgrade would be a Radeon 9200 128mb card - about $75+ on ebay

 within a reasonable budget! :)

This is a nine years old machine and while nice to work with, is well past
its prime. This is mostly a budget hobby project with the aim of turning it
into a chepao gaming machine (within its limits) and kid computer.

It's a stand-alone device (not running off computer like a USB dongle) that
receives the wireless signal and then has an ethernet cable running from it
to the computer needing wireless, to provide it with a wireless connection.

See:
http://www.buy.com/prod/belkin-802-11g-wireless-ethernet-bridge-54-mbps/q/lo
c/111/90133395.html

That is an example of one that I have used; there are several makes, and
any computer store should have a few. There are also plenty of used ones.

-

I forgot -- they IS another method of connecting a computer to an ethernet
signal w/o using a long cable, and that is a POE adapter-setup:

I am still using this "dinosaur" as my main desktop! This iMac is
dual boot --- can boot up in OS 9 as well as 10. I have Tiger
installed on mine. As I recall, I installed Tiger first, then booted
up with OS 9 disk and installed it. In The Start Up Preferences, you
can choose which OS to use.

I want to buy a new iMac, too, but don't want to lose the use of some
of my favorite Classic apps! So I would have to keep the "dinosau",
too. Somehow my husband thinks that having 2 Mac desktops, a Powerbook
(his) and MacBook (mine) are too many computers!

Jane

PS These iMacs are called Flat Screen iMac.

A wireless box that connects to your wired ethernet port, and ends
with a wirelss connection. They're sometimes called Gaming adapters,
because they'll connect anything with an ethernet port to a wireless
system.

Here's a bunch at Amazon

That storage area - was it damp at all? If the former, I'm thinking
maybe the system dried out a bit and that's why it went form doornail
to trying.

Try blowing out the crud, cleaning the battery socket, then
re-seating the power connectors...

(that's how I got a DA working last week; same general symptoms)

A professor dug his old quicksilver (M8493) out of storage (been there
about 6 months) and it wouldn't start at all. Pressed the power
button, it flashed, then went off. Fans didn't even start up. It had

I suspected the PRAM battery, so we replaced to to no avail.

Just a suggestion: sucks to be you! :-/

Doing without the airport card, resoldering the socket or getting a
new logic board are the only solutions here.

Now, unless you're Shrek, and approach electronics disassembly with a
crowbar and a hammer, it's likely that the socket was already
compromised, and that may actually have been the source of the KP's;
it shouldn't have come off the logic board that easily.

If the pins are broken off the socket, then the socket must be
replaced. No soldering repair will ever make it run properly at the
speeds it needs.

If the pins are lodged in the PCB then they have to painstakingly
removed, with a soldering iron and a pin (push tool), one or a few at
a time. ug. Lotta work.

An iBook G4 is such a nice machine. I'd set it aside for now; take
your time. Keep your eye out for a reasonably priced replacement
motherboard or a whole machine broken for some other reason, so you
can do transplant surgery. Craigslist, eBay, LEM Swap, etc.

The first place a LEM member looks is the LEM swap list.

Post a WTB or just ask if anyone has one.

Dashboard can be problematic. It always runs, using both memory and
cpu resources. Once a widget is loaded, it's always running too.

Try temporarily disabling Dashboard altogether using a tool like OnyX.

Any kernel panics (whole OS crashes)?

What does Activity Monitor say are the top cpu pigs?

What do the app crash logs say? (If you don't know how to read
them, please take a bunch, zip 'em up and email them to me directly.
I'll take a quick look. Please DO NOT post them into the group).

In Safari, do you have the page previews enabled? do you have
fraudulent site checking enabled? Those two "features" greatly slow
Safari and make it chew a LOT of cpu time.

You gots something else running.

Try disabling Dashboard then re-check.

Broke the socket on the logic board of iBook g4 1.33mhz last night

2009-11-25 Thread Dwight Hines
It is irritating because I got to the airport/blue card that was
causing the kernel panics and got it out and then noticed that I had
pulled the socket right off the board when unhooking it.

So, from just a few minutes surfing, it appears people want megabucks
for working logic boards, even if the boards are used.

Does anyone have a hack or a suggestion (other than soldering which
want work because of the way all four zillion pins broke at the board
surface)?

Glen...how do you do this? I thought the camera only output video from
your machine, but to see others' machine?

Try installing a lightweight window manager, like lxde or xfce.
Graphic overhead will be minimized, yielding snappier performance.
