Re: PowerMac G4 Quicksilver

2012-11-08 Thread Eleni
Do you hear the BONG when it starts up?

It could be one of the following:

1. the little battery is dead
2. The HD is dead

Which Quicksilver you have?
Quicksilvers are very nice machines, especially the Dual Processor ones, you
can install Mac OS X 10.5 and still use them!

See here my Quicksilver 800MHz DP with 3 screens, running Mac OS X 10.5

Have a look at my channel, you will see what I mean:

As far as I remember it did work before.

Converting Binary saved apps for Mac OS 7 - 9

2012-03-10 Thread Eleni Varveri
I found a site ( http://www.macintoshgarden.org/ ) that has a load of
apps/games even operating systems for Mac OS 7-9 systems.

Problem is that some of these good things are saved in binary form as they are
more intended for emulators as ship shaver and Basillisk.

Anyone knows how I can get that binary to work on my PowerMac G4 booting from
Mac OS 9?

Any ideas?

Re: Video card B+W 450

2012-03-04 Thread Eleni
Hi all.

I have a G3 400MHz/1GB Ram and I am amazed by the difference in performance
from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X 10.3!
I have not installed Mac OS X 10.4 yet because I do not know if my Ati Rage 128
Pro will be able to handle the 'more demanding' Mac OS X.

I think that you can also see lots of improvement using different Browsers. I
have tried the Camino Browser and I think it is the best of them all!

On Mac OS 9 try the Classila.

Regarding YouTube, even at work on my iMac i5 2.5GHz it freezes till all the
video is downloaded and after I hit refresh it plays flawlessly. On some low
quality (smaller in MB) videos it runs perfectly. I think that YouTube pushing
for better quality videos/higher resolution, have slowed down the system.

Here is a video of my beautiful and beloved PowerMac G3

http://youtu.be/0RIpT0_lqmk

Let me know if the Camino works better for you.

Good luck!

Oh, while I'm thinking of it, can someone tell me if 128 is the max

HD problem on my PowerMac G3

2012-03-04 Thread Eleni
Hi everyone,

Have a PowerMac G3 400MHz with 1GB Ram and an IBM 60GB HD/7200rpm built 2001.

On Mac OS 8.6 I had 17.8 GB left on my HD, I copied about 6GB uncompressed
applications, and before installing them, I saw that I had only 1.7GB left!!

Is there a problem with Mac OS 8,6 handling data?? How 6GB of data consume
more than 15BG on my HD??

Any ideas?

2012-02-27 Thread Eleni
My Macmini G4/1.42GHz/1GB ram/80GB HD has no start up chime anymore!

It seems to work ok, apart that the Superdrive is only reading Apple's CD/DVDs.

Is this a sign that it is dying or no start up chime its nothing to worry about?

Ane ideas?

 CDs, definitely.
DVDs, I think you have to limit the max speed you're writing with - I don't
think a G3/400 can hold 8x DVD writing, but 2x should be fine.

Well, as always, it all depends on what you're going to do with it.

I once had a Beige PowerMac G3/266 (later upgraded to 450 MHz and then 900
MHz), and I absolutely LOVED IT. :-)
It was a great machine, very stable and highly upgradable.
OTOH, it would be useless for my needs now.

Personally, I'd go for a G4 minimum: faster, more efficient architecture,
 more compatible with late software.
But, again, it depends on YOU; if you state what your needs are, I'm sure
the people here will be able to suggest the right Mac for you.

Re: Buying a G5

I agree, limiting memory capacity to 1GB on Macmini G4 is very much crippling
the system, however if you like to do simple tasks under Tiger, and browse the
internet it is more than capable. People tend to linstall Leopard and I think
that should even lower available memory.
I got mine with wireless card and bluetooth. I also have a superdrive which is
having problems, it will only reads Apple CD/DVDs and nothing else! I upgraded
the firmware but no luck. Any ideas? - Sorry for changing the subject here.

Overall its a fine little machine and I still like to use it.

External HD / Firewire problem with Mac G4 Cube

2012-02-24 Thread Eleni
I was working on my relatively unused external HD connected via Firewire on my
Mac G4 Cube under System 9.2 and I am sure that I disconnected the drive too
soon. Since then the drive is no longer recognized, it asks me if I want to
Format it or Eject it. I check the drive under Mac OS X 10.3 and I can see it
using the Disk Utility but it does not allow me under First Aid to verify disk
of even repair Disk. The Drive sound ok, I have the feeling that the directory
got 'broken' . Any ideas on how to fix it?

Thanks.
