The reason she wants to keep the old thing, says the sweet old thing, is that she has equally antique applications that she cannot bear to part with, and that can only run in OS 9 (such as an old genealogy program, an early word processor, solitaire games, etc.), and none of the newer iMacs can run Classic. She has simply got to run Classic, as well as OS-X for e-mail and surfing the web with Safari. ---snip--- In short, what would be the best way to install both 10.4.11 and Classic 9.2.2 on this old G4 iMac? I am still using this dinosaur as my main desktop! This iMac is dual boot --- can boot up in OS 9 as well as 10. I have Tiger installed on mine. As I recall, I installed Tiger first, then booted up with OS 9 disk and installed it. In The Start Up Preferences, you can choose which OS to use. I want to buy a new iMac, too, but don't want to lose the use of some of my favorite Classic apps! So I would have to keep the dinosau, too. Somehow my husband thinks that having 2 Mac desktops, a Powerbook (his) and MacBook (mine) are too many computers! Re: Classic on Ruby Red iMac

I installed a new hard drive and formatted it to 10.4, that's the OS her school runs on their iMacs.) I have also installed several learning games that need Classic. However, whenever I try to open one of these, I get a message that it cant find 9.2 to run Classic. I thought i had installed it during the 10.4 installation. Was there a separate option? How can i put in on the iMac now? Jane The 10.4 DVD contains support for Classic, but you will have to install 9.2.2 separately. Put in a 9.2.x disk while in Tiger, then select it as the startup disk in System Preferences and restart. Or restart and hold down the C key. Once booted to the OS 9 disk, install 9.2.x and then run Software Update until there's nothing left to update. You may find that the firmware needs to be updated; if so, consider yourself lucky that 10.4 ran OK. When you're happy with OS 9.2.2, select OS 10.4 as the startup disk in Control Panel, and restart in 10.4. Once there, go to System Preferences, select Classic and follow the prompts. One of the options is to always start up Classic when the iMac boots into 10.4. That lets you put Classic program icons on the desktop, and your little friend will be able to launch those apps without any problems. Of course, check them out first since some OS 9 apps don't run very well in Classic. If so, then you'll have lots of fun teaching a 6-year-old how to do the old dual-boot dance. Good luck! Jim Scott Jim, I have the CD of 9.0. Held down the C key and booted from the CD. The install attempt failed. I got a message that said I could not install 9 on the volume with 10.4 and to choose Options. The choice there was a Clean install and I don't really know what that entails, so I quit the installer. What did I miss doing? The iMac firmware is up to date. Re: Proper Backup Procedure for Migration?

That way I kept all my applications, extensions, preference panes, etc. intact in the new system installation. The process took about 2 hours, it turns out I didn't need the CCC backup at all because everything worked but there's no way I'm skipping that step- it's the best insurance. Where do you find monolingual to remove the languages and architectures? That would save some hard drive space! TechToolPro commercial version or supplied by Apple? There are several sub-types of write once discs, the most common called DVD+R and DVD-R. There is also a much less common type that you can rewrite or erase many times, but much less than 1,000 times total. These discs are designated DVD-RW. 2. Can you amend files and text on the DVD? Not normally unless you're using DVD-RW media. 3. Should I put a variety of programs on a DVD (such as games, utilities, downloaded/bought software) or stick to one kind? Use all the space if possible if it's only a write once DVD. They hold about 4.3 GB or so. There are also dual-layer DVDs that hold twice that amount. I think there are also dual layer RW rewritable discs, but again, very rare, and likely very expensive? Kris, uh, it says in the title that it is a DVD-RW. Actually, the discs are DVD+RW. Does the plus make a difference?
