Re: MDD problem

2011-02-12 Thread yawg
Hello,

I just tried to start my MDD another time, this time I held down the
start button for a longer time and lo and behold, at least I got the
same situation as before. The red LED on the mobo is lit.

The last thing I did was replace the single DIMM I left in and connect
another disk. Nothing looks burnt as far as I can see. Are there more
options before I send my PSU in for an overhaul?

Thanks again, Jörg.

Re: MDD problem

2011-02-12 Thread yawg
Hi,

Thanks for your comments and help.

When I pressed the CUDA for a couple of times, about 10 to 20 seconds,
there was no battery installed.

I did this only after the normal CUDA procedure (5 sec. with battery)
didn't work.

How can I damage the motherboard without the battery? So it might be
wasted money if I send my PSU in for repair? I have to get another
MDD??

Best regards, Jörg.

Re: MDD problem

2011-02-11 Thread yawg
Hi,

I removed all cards, put the video card back in, removed all RAM, put
one RAM stick back in, removed all ATA cables exept for my startup
disk, removed the battery, pushed the CUDA a couple of times for 20
seconds, pushed the power button for 20 seconds, let the thing sit for
half an hour or more, put the battery back in and voilá: no more bong,
the light on the power button only stays lit as long as I push it,
doesn't matter how long I push it ...

So I managed to kill my MDD by following your suggestions?

I'm really sad now, not even a bong left ...

Re: MDD problem

2011-02-10 Thread yawg
Hi,

Today I opened my MDD (1.25 GHz 2003 model) and it uses a Samsung PSU,
those PSUs seem to go at once and when they go the home fuse goes
also ...

All fans are running, the red LED on the mainboard is lit, I get a
bong, then the disks try to initialize but stop after a while. When I
put a CD in the DVD-drive that drive also spins up for a while.

But my monitors stay dark and the keyboard is not initialized - the
green LED on the capslock key stays dark. That's why I cannot use any
key-combos at startup, no PRAM reset or Alt to change my startup disk,
no shift to do a clean start. The mouse doesn't work either because
the drive should open when I start with the mouse pressed down. I
tried two keyboards.

One time the fans revved up after the bong for a second then back to
slow. I pulled all flatcables and power supplies to the drives and
reseated them. I have 3 start volumes, two Panther and one Tiger, I
normally run Tiger from a big SATA-drive that I use with a little SATA
to PATA adapter. I already removed the PRAM-battery for quite a while,
tried a new one, pulled all the RAM and cleaned and reseated it.

So I guess it's not the PSU's fault but what do I know? This is the
first Mac I cannot get to run again after a crash, it's very
frustrating.

Regards, Jörg.

I also have problems with my MDD PSU and on German eBay I found a guy
who fixes both types, Samsung and Actel. He claims to revise them and
remove all weaknesses so the fixed PSU should last at least 8 more
years. He gives a 3-year warranty.The price is about 120 US$ plus
shipping. Used MDD PSUs go for about the same price on eBay and you
never know when those will fail as they are stock ones ...

I think I will go for it. Maybe there is a company in the US that does
the same thing.

MDD problem

2011-02-03 Thread yawg
Hi,

Yesterday I came back home after 3 months abroad and started up my
MDD, it booted fine and I did some work and then played music from the
harddisk. Suddenly the music playback got stuck and the Mac froze. I
switched it off holding down the power button. When I started it again
I got the screen that tells you to restart in many languages (a stupid
thing - when you restart after seeing this screen the mac never
restarts, all you get is that same sceen again over and over).

But this time I didn't even get the "restart screen" again but only a
bong and then nothing, both my monitors stayed dark. I couldn't even
reset the PRAM, no second bong. Starting with the Alt button didn't
work either. After reading some old posts about the PRAM-battery
issues I bought a new battery today but still the same. I tried
reseating the 3 RAM-sticks, 2 512 and one 1024 MB, still no go.

What more can I try to get my Mac to work again? I am running mostly
Tiger and sometimes Panther if I want to use older Adobe apps. Would
this be a bad power supply?

I live in a relatively cool climate, the Netherlands, the fan of my
MDD 1.25 GHz (last model with FW 400) only speeds up sometimes when
it's very hot in the summer.

Thanks for your comments. Best regards, Jörg.

Re: M-Audio

Hi there,

> All I can say is that I hope they continue down that path. For now I'll

Same here. The drivers for my Rev. 7.1 only worked - somehow - under
Panther as did my webcam as did my Adobe "classic" apps etc. etc.

That's why I stay in Panther except for internet browsing. Under Tiger
the M-Audio drivers work barely but I cannot change certain values or
my MDD crashes. It seems to me that the Panther drivers work "better"
under Tiger than their "dedicated" half-hearted Tiger-version!
Apparently the card itself is not too bad though..

I still can't see any big pros to upgrade from Tiger. What would they
be on the last MDD that is able to boot OS9 natively?

And in the M-Audio commercials all the users have Macs! What a bad
joke.

Good luck, Jörg.

MDD won't start after cloning

2010-10-17 Thread yawg
Hi,

I have a problem that doesn't go away. I made a startup disk with Disk
Utility, a clone because DU just copied the blocks, but that disk
won't boot my Mac. I get the login screen even though I am admin and
never see that screen normally. The same if I start up in Tiger or
Panther.

When I enter my correct name and password I am still denied access.
This is very annoying. I checked the disk and permissions but still no
go. I changed the permissions with Info to my name and still no go. I
have all security features switched of as I am the only user anyway.
What the h***?

TIA for your suggestions.

Re: How to burn VIDEO_TS

2010-10-13 Thread yawg
Hi Kris,

I know all my cats ;-)

In Tiger all the older apps of Adobe don't work any more like
Illustrator and Photoshop or Acrobat. I still like Acrobat 4 for a
quick job, it starts up faster in Classic than the CS2 version in
Tiger. And I know Illustrator 9 well but find the CS2 version too
complex for my daily needs, I need it for compatibility mostly. The
same for Photoshop, I even still use version 4 sometimes, it is snappy
in Classic and I still know all the old keyboard shortcuts.

A pity Mosley stopped updating Camino for Panther. I liked that
browser until it broke because of the Flash updates.

But I realize that I have to move on even though I am 90 percent
retired now. Or just keep getting frustrated sitting at my MDD.

Maybe I'll have a go and jump to Snow Leopard by hacking my Samsung
netbook - for recent compatibility ...

Cheers, Jörg.

Re: How to burn VIDEO_TS

2010-10-13 Thread yawg
Hi Brian,

Perhaps a bit OT but here we go:

I have both Tiger and Panther on my MDD on different drives. I use
Tiger for the web because my browsers can use the latest Flash version
- surfing the web is virtually broken in Panther now.

But in Panther I can still use all my old apps in Classic which is not
possible in Tiger. Plus my Logitech webcam does not work in Tiger
anymore. And so on ...

I just wanted to try Toast 8 again for DVD-burning because I had some
coasters lately when I burned DVDs in Toast 6. But probably that's not
a software issue ...

Just the fact that I am not allowed to unzip an archive I made myself
is quite annoying - don't you think so? As an old Mac user I hate to
be told by my box what I can or cannot do ;-)

Regards, Jörg.

Hello,

Just a little quirk I encountered in Toast. I have versions 6 in

When I tried to unzip my version 8 again for burning DVDs my Tiger

PC app to play my Toast music?

2010-09-15 Thread yawg
Hi,

I have a Samsung NC10 netbook which I will take on my trip to
Thailand. I also have 400GB of Toast AIF music on my MDD which I want
to take with me on a portable USB "Icebox" HD with Firewire and USB
interface.

With what (freeware-) app can I play my Toast CDs on the netbook with
the original resolution - w/o compression? Can I make .img files off
my Toast .disc files and mount them on the Samsung like virtual CDs?

TIA, Jörg.

SCSI PCI-controller for MDD

2010-09-13 Thread yawg
Hi,

I have problems with my SCSI-controller card, it is an Adaptec 2906.
My SCSI-Probe in OS9 sees my Microtek Scanmaker III but when I try to
use it I get all kinds of errors. Although I used the scanner before
with Microtec ScanWizard now Photoshop versions 4 and 6 tell me I have
an old driver or scanner not found. In OSX no scanner is seen anyway
so I cannot use VueScan which I would prefer as I have Adobe CS2.

So what other brand and model of SCSI-controller can you recommend
that would work in OSX Panther/Tiger and OS9?

TIA for your input.

Regards, Jörg.

MDD lost his bong after DVD-writer exchange

2010-09-06 Thread yawg
Hi all,

I just pulled the original BenQ CD-Writer in my MDD because of a tray
problem and replaced it with the trusty Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-108 from my
beige MT. Now there is no more bong at startup. I liked the bong
because it is the same as that of my good ole Quadra 840av ...

It doesn't matter if I start Panther, Tiger or OS9, no bong ever. I
checked the Sound Panel and Startup Sound pane which I use to turn
down the bong. Both are OK and I can hear the Alerts through the
internal speakers.

Any ideas anyone? TIA.

Another thing: The older Pioneer DVR-108 shows firmware revision 1.18
whereas the newer DVR-116D shows 1.09. AFAIK rev. 1.09 is the latest
region-free firmware, isn't it?

Regards, Jörg.

I would go for an external case with Oxford controller and just a
little space at the connector for a 10-dollar adapter so you can fit a
SATA hd, You can get more than a TB for the same money you pay for a
500 GB PATA drive. You just need a little adapter for about 10
dollars.

Re: installing older software

Yes, and still see old hardware too, like my old SCSI-chain with my
trusty Microtek scanner ...

I never got that Adaptec PCI SCSI-card to work under OSX although I
installed the driver following the instructions. But in OS9 it still
works like a charm. I have the latest G4 MDD which Apple brought on
the market after the G5 because they realized there are a load of
users that still need native OS9 ...

I'll keep it until death does us part.

No, I already had a feeling like you said so my Apple stuff like kb
and mouse are always in the on-board USB-ports.

I recently had big problems after having booted into OS9 after I had
installed the latest software via the program updater in OS9. Both my
Panther partitions and my Tiger partition didn't boot anymore after
starting up with the Alt-key pressed. With my internal Tiger partition
I got a log-in screen which I never do as I'm admin. When I filled in
my proper name and password I got a denial!

I then chose my external Firewire Tiger partition in the startup
control panel in OS9 and low and behold, the darn thing started. Then
I repaired permissions on all OSX boot partitions and everything is
back to normal. Phew! Three perfectly working boot-partitions refused
to start. You can never have too much options, do you?

I have an MDD with 2 internal Panther partitions and one Tiger part.
on different drives and one Tiger on a Firewire drive which I
regularly clone to and fro plus two OS9 boot partitions ...

Regards, Jörg.

Apple USB Extended Keyboard Extension

2009-11-29 Thread yawg
Hi,

When I boot into OS9 I always get the message that the Apple USB
Extended Keyboard Extension is not found. I installed the USB Device
Extension like Apple advises on their site but I still get the
reminder every time I boot. What gives?

I'm using a white extended keybord from an older iMac, I think the one
with the half globe and the tilted TFT-display.

How can I get rid of the reminder? The keyboard seems to work OK as
does the Mighty Mouse but the scrolling ball is disabled.

Regards, Jörg.

No more printing from Classic

2009-11-05 Thread yawg

Hi,

Lately I can't print directly from Classic apps any more. Either I get
a system error -5751 (for example XPress Passport 5.0.1 ) or the app
says that printing wasn't possible because of an unknown error
(Acrobat 4.0.5a).

I can't find anything on the Apple site about that particular system
error as their list goes only up to -5553. What gives?

Now I always have to convert my XPress documents to PDF and only then
can I print them from OSX via Acrobat Destiller. This is kind of
annoying ...

Also, I have many Classic apps that simply can't generate PDF files.
Thanks in advance for your input.

Regards, Jörg.

I know most of what you explained, thank you. I wanted to get a SATA
PCI-controller myself at first but soon found out that the ones
supporting booting OSX were very expensive, I was just looking for big
cheap drives as I have a big (and growing) movie collection. So
therefore the controller card was out of the question.

Also all my PCI-slots are full, I could pull a usb-controller but
anyway ...

The adapters are small and dirt cheap and they work. There is one
jumper on them which has to be closed when the drive is in "slave"
mode, otherwise it's plug and play. The speed advantage with SATA is
only marginal with a plain vanilla PCI-controller in an 1.25Ghz MDD,
also the drives are still too slow themselves IMHO.

So I guess my advice is still the best if you just need more capacity
with no boot problems for little money. If anybody needs an external
disk, in case of Firewire or USB enclosures he should check if the
drive with the adapter still fits inside the case and - very important
- if the controller in the external case supports big disks. Most of
them don't.

Only then should one get an external SATA drive and would need a PCI-
controller with an eSATA connector. Just my 2 ¢ ...

Kind regards, Jörg.

I forgot: the adapter is called OEM IDE2SATA Ultra-ATA to Serial-ATA

It's the cheapest of the four, the lower on the right.

Get the adapters. They are small and cheap and even work both ways,
i.e. you can also attach an old PATA drive to a SATA cable. They fit
nicely in the original spaces in my MDD.

When I start up in OS9 I can't see or access those SATA drives though,
that's because they are too big for OS9 i.e. 1.5TB.

Success! Regards, Jörg.

You should just get an adapter, I use two of them to connect cheap
1.5TB drives, they work like a charm. They should cost around 10
Dollars. ATA-drives are mostly 500GB max. and cost the same as much
bigger SATA-drives.

My SATA drives connected via the adapters are quieter than my ATA
drives and as fast if not faster. I use these adapters:

I have that same 2906 card you mentioned and installed the driver from
the Adaptec support site which should work. But when I boot into OSX
with an active MOD device (turned on and a disc loaded) I get the dark
screen with that useless advice in all those languages to reboot. The
Mac will NEVER boot after that text appears if you don't fix it ;-)

I've been working with (often long) SCSI chains since 1990 and know a
thing or two, sometimes it really seemed like Voodoo. But since I used
the SCSI PowerPlug® - which lets you add and remove devices without
having to restart - I never had any more SCSI problems.

It's strange that my chain works (no matter how much devices or if
they are turned on or off) under OS 9.2.2 but won't under OSX, both
Tiger and Panther.

Yes, I have VueScan. Any more suggestions anyone?

PCI SCSI-controller and OSX

2009-10-14 Thread yawg

Hi,

I finally managed to boot my MDD into OS9 again and am now able to use
my old SCSI-chain, MO-drive, good ole Plextor CD-writer and my still
excellent Microtek-scanner.

The thing is I'd like to use my scanner also under OSX, I'm running
Panther and Tiger. When I open System Info I get nada under the SCSI-
header. When I click the info about the PCI SCSI-bus-controller I get
this (it's a Dutch system):

pci9004,7850:

  Type:SCSI-bus-controller
  Bus:PCI
  Sleuf:SLOT-4
  Fabrikantcode:0x9004
  Apparaatcode:0x5078
  Fabrikantcode subsysteem:0x9004
  Subsysteem-ID:0x7850
  Revisiecode:0x0003

Do I need some special drivers to get the thing to work? It's an
Adaptec card with one 25-pin SCSI-connector. I thought that the
Adaptec cards were supported under OSX ...

Or do I have to buy another card? Which one would be the best? I only
need the old slow SCSI stuff. Thanks.

Regards, Jörg.

Camino isn't just another browser. After Safari I tried Firefox and
Opera but Camino is what Safari should be. In fact it's kind of Safari
but better and more compatible.

I've got the stripped-down version optimized for the latest G4 Macs.
Look here:

I hope you know your processor ;-)

Go Thunderbirds!

Re: How to block ads in Safari 3.2.1 in Leopard?

2009-03-28 Thread yawg

Hi Peter,

Forget Safari and use Camino. Flash and Ad blockers are integrated, it
has a small footprint (26.6 MB) and as fast as it gets with browsers.
It uses the same engine as Safari and the latest version works even
with Panther. I love it.

Regards, Jörg.

Re: Latest on SATA PCI for a Quicksilver 2002 Dual 1GHz

2009-03-07 Thread yawg

Hi,

I was looking for a bootable SATA PCI controller but couldn't fine
one, also most of them are not bootable anyway.

But there is a good solution out there, a simple small SATA to PATA
adapter that cost me just 9 euros. It fits on the SATA hard disk and
presto! It's just like a big fast ATA disk.

The stated 2 or 3 GB per second performance of SATA disks is
impossible anyway. That speed will only be reached in burst mode when
data is read directly from the cache of the disk and that cache is
mostly 32 MB IIRC.

Now I have an extra fast 1 TB disk for the price of a standard 500 GB
ATA one. Works for me ...

Regards, Jörg.

Re: How can I point iTunes to a new disk?

2009-03-02 Thread yawg

Hi,

I don't have a new library location, as my new big disk is only
storage as my old smaller disk was. I just want to point iTunes to the
new disk where all my music is now. It's an identical copy of all the
music on my original smaller disk. I hate to bloat my system disk with
all those files.

I followed your instructions and iTunes reworked the whole shebang but
I'm still stuck and have to point iTunes to every new track location.

What a PITA ...

How can I point iTunes to a new disk?

2009-03-02 Thread yawg

Hi,

My disk space got claustrophobic so I installed a new 1 TB disk,
copied all the files from the old small one to the new one and removed
the old one.

Now every time I want to play a playlist in iTunes I have to tell
iTunes where to find every single tune. Duh ...

Is there a possibility to show iTunes the whole new disk so it won't
ask me every time to locate the song? I tried to select a whole bunch
of tracks at the same time but then I don't get the option "show in
Finder".

This is so tedious. There must be an easy way out ...

Also I noted that it isn't possible anymore to assign cover art to a
selection of tracks when the playlist is quite long. Is there a
maximum of tracks to a certain playlist?

The more I use iTunes the more it seems to suck.

O yeah, using iTunes ver. 7.7 (43), this seems to be the ultimate
version for Panther.

TIA for your suggestions.

Regards, Jörg.

Re: New DVD RW running slow on PowerMac G4 Dual 450

2009-02-15 Thread yawg

Hi Ken,

I installed the Pioneer DVR-116D lately, it's a cheap fast drive. Yes
you need Patchburn if you want to burn from the Finder. But if you use
Toast for burning you'll have all the speeds available w/o Patchburn.

There is also a speedburn patch on the net so you will be able to
access faster burning speeds as well as a RPC-1 patch so your drive
won't have to switch regions.

You can update the firmware on your Mac using DVRFlash. It's a
straightforward Terminal app, just pull the (patched) firmware into
the Terminal.

I've got all the files, if you need them mail me personally.

Regards, Jörg.

Today I got my Hitachi 1TB SATA disk and the ICIDU PCI SATA controller
card which has two internal and two external channels. Low & behold:
it has an Initio-chip model INIC-1620TA2 on the board. So there might
be hope that it will work in my MDD G4? And might even be bootable? No
ICIDU Mac drivers available though.

Could I try the drivers from another Initio-based SATA controller
card? What do you all reckon? It would be just wonderful ...

I'm posting this from my Gmail account and hope that there will be no
double post. I once even did a triple post accidentally. When I posted
a reply I got a time-out and refreshed the page. So the time-out
wasn't a time-out after all.

TIA for your help.

Re: Problem with M-Audio Revolution 7.1

2009-02-05 Thread yawg

Hi Eric,

The M-Audio drivers are buggy as hell. And the M-Audio support for
Macs is non-existent. The Rev. 7.1 card sounds very good anyway IMO.
You just have to fiddle about with the different M-Audio driver
versions. Open up the Apple System Prefs and the M-Audio Revolution
7.1app at the same time and click to and fro ...

I lost my card after a DVD-writer upgrade, no more digital out and had
to click and click, now my card works again and it sounds marvellous
connected to my Cayin DA-2 tube DAC.

Under Tiger the Digital Out of the card's Pref panel just showed the
max. upsampling rate which my DAC can't even use but it worked
anyway ...

Don't give up. The hardware is excellent. If it finds its way through
the labyrinth of the stupid M-Audio programmers' buggy software it
really shines.

I'm listening to the Rev. 7.1 under Panther at the moment, connected
to my trusty Cayin DAC, souped up with vintage Siemens/Halske CCa
tubes, fed into the fabulous vintage Pütz P2 preamp which feeds my
gorgeous vintage Esoteric Audio Research 549 power monos, souped up
with vintage Telefunken ECC85's and General Electric 5751 military
triple mica black plates from the 50s. Total bliss, get my drift?

Success! Kind regards from the Netherlands,

Jörg.

Jörg.

I find the SeriTek card quite expensive. It's also not clear if the
SeriTek card will work flawlessly under Panther. I'll try out the
ICIDU PCI card first but I have the feeling it won't work as I didn't
find any OSX drivers for it on the net.

I found this instead which looks very promising. The seller claims his
card is bootable under Panther:

Which SATA PCI adapter will work in a MDD?

2009-01-30 Thread yawg

Hi,

I have loads of ripped DVDs and a big music archive and the four disks
in my MDD are almost full. Today I saw that a 1TB SATA disk costs the
same amount as a 500GB ATA disk so I decided to buy a big SATA disk
and an ICIDU PCI adapter eSATA which has two internal ports and two
external eSATA ports. Now I wonder if the SATA adapter will work in my
MDD.

Does anybody on this list know more about the ins and outs of SATA
adapters in Macs? Will the ICIDU work? If not which would be your
choice? I like one with at least one eSATA port so I can connect
external SATA drives. Are SATA externals bootable? I guess not ...

TIA for your comments.

Pioneer DVR-116D Firmware flashing problem

2009-01-30 Thread yawg

Hi,

After my BenQ DVD-writer wouldn't write to 16-speed DVD-Rs anymore I
bought a Pioneer DVR-116D as it is seen by Macs as a "native" drive.

I tried flashing its firmware today on the PC of a friend, the FW on
the drive was 1.04 and the latest Pioneer FW was 1.09. But the
flashing wouldn't work, the program told me to eject the disk when
there wasn't a disk in it and when we tried to flash it with the tray
out it wouldn't work either.

Anybody of you know anything about this prob? I'd also patch the FW
with MCSE to get the drive region-free. Any hints and suggestions are
very welcome. TIA.

My Mac is the latest version of the MDD running the latest versions of
Panther and Tiger with 2 gigs of RAM.

Regards, Jörg.

Best DVD writer for an MDD?

2009-01-25 Thread yawg

Hi,

My SuperDrive can't write DVD-R discs any more. When I open up its
system profile I get this (Dutch):

ATAPI DVD DD 2X16X4X16:

  Fabrikant:ATAPI
  Model:ATAPI DVD DD 2X16X4X16
  Revisie: G7H9
  Serienummer:
  Schijftype: CD-RW/DVD-RW
  Schijven branden: Niet ondersteund
  Verwijderbare media: Ja
  Externe eenheid: Nee
  Protocol: ATAPI
  Eenheidnummer:0
  Sockettype: Intern

So it says that my SuperDrive doesn't support writing disks! Can
System Profiler see that my DVD-writer is defective?

What would be a good reliable new DVD-writer that will be supported in
my Mac? I have a last generation 1.25 GHz MDD running both Panther and
Tiger. Thanks for your advice.

Regards, Jörg.

Re: booting off firewire drive possible/reliable??

2009-01-11 Thread yawg

Hi,

I have three external Firewire drives, one with an Oxford-controller
that always boots fine, there is a Tiger clone on that disk now.

My other two have Initio-controllers and used to boot my Panther
clones OK but lost that ability somehow lately, I don't know why. I
always use CCC for cloning, the older version for my Panther clones
and the newer version for Tiger. All three have no capacity limit
AFAIK.

I like the Diginote (made by CoolerMaster) Initio-enclosures a lot
though. No fiddling with little screws, no fan but good cooling, nice
look and - last not least - real cheap.

As I mentioned earlier I'm talking Panther and Tiger on the latest MDD

Thanks anyway but I'm still w/o a clue ...

I didn't change a thing. I always cloned system vols to my FW-disks
and never had an issue.

Yesterday I repaired permissions on a new clone with a Panther system,
lots of permissions were repaired but still no boot. Any chance how I
can fix the firmware on my Initio controllers? TIA.

Anyway, the Oxford-enclosure boots with any system, Panther or Tiger,

As I said I changed permissions to my own admin account so "Ignore
Permissions" was overwritten. I said also that both Initio FW-drives
don't boot no matter what version of CCC, I use both the old and the
new one as I can only use the old version when I'm running Panther. In
Tiger I use the new version.

Re: CCC Bootable Backup

2008-12-01 Thread yawg

Hi,

I can't contribute to this topic but I have a similar problem
concerning CCC and Firewire drives.

I used to be able to boot from all my external FW disks but now only
the one with the Oxford chip will start up, my Initio-chip FW-disks
won't boot anymore. I'm flummoxed ...

It doesn't matter if I use the old or new versions of CCC, Tiger
system volumes or Panther vols.

I checked permissions on those disks, they were set to "ignore
permissions" and even when I changed them to my admin account they
refuse to boot.

I'm quite sure they did before as I always test my fresh clones after
making them. Using the latest MDD Mac with the latest Tiger and
Panther systems.

Re: Help! I Wanna Crack A Lacie FW CDRW Case

2008-11-13 Thread yawg

Hi Richard,

Those photos look exactly like my Porsche brick only yours would be
bigger as it is for an optical drive ...

You will have to try to insert two small blades in the cracks of the
case (two at once on one side at the height of the feet) and then push
the bottom down a bit on that side so the little nubs will slip out of
their little grooves, then do the same on the other side and try to
shake the bottom with the drive loose from the cover/top. If I
remember right there is also a little nub/groove on the back ...

I wish you luck as it is a very fiddly undertaking. I was cursing a
lot but I got it done eventually ...

Cheers, Jörg.

All apps work perfectly. Only about half of my classic apps stopped
working under Tiger (like Illustrator 9 and all 3 Quark XPress
versions I use) i.e. directly after the "upgrade" they became
unavailable. Under Panther everything is still perfect.

In between I did a file-level clone with the new CCC under Tiger and
everything went well. So perhaps the old CCC app had some bugs?

The error occurred always only on the BootX-file. Before the error
occurred I was successfully cloning both my drives twice a week w/o
any errors. The few other problems I had before (CCC just stopped
cloning) were probably caused because in the beginning I was cloning
in the background thus actually changing the drive I was cloning ...

But now comes the clincher: When I was busy replacing the BootX file
from an older Panther clone on a FireWire drive I accidentally put the
CoreServices folder in the trash (command-backspace). I meant the
BootX file but the folder was highlighted.

How is that possible anyway? The owner of CoreServices is/was system,
I'm only the humble admin ...

And then I couldn't get the darn thing out of the trash again - no
permissions! Wow!! OSX let me trash an absolutely essential folder but
I can't retrieve it again. What a PITA ...

Some bad blocks huh? Better get a new drive. What happened to SMART
anyway? That's supposed to warn me when my drive gets flaky or not?
DiskUtility tells me that SMART was checked. So my SMART went DUMB on
me ...

I probably have still warranty on that Western Digital drive but I
won't get a new drive with this "hazy" story I guess. How do you kill
a drive w/o visible destruction on the outside? ;-)

After my original boot volume was thus crippled I tried to start
(restarted with the alt-key) from the clone on the other drive (that
system partition booted perfectly before) and that gave me the darn
message in three languages to restart my computer. This is the most
stupid message of OSX I know because a simple restart will never help!
They should add that you will have to push the alt-key when restarting
and choose another drive to start up from. If you have one that is ...

So I still had a bootable Tiger volume left and started up from that.
Then I replaced the BootX file in the CoreServices folder of my clone
that wouldn't start (still can't figure out why) with that from the
external and copied that folder to the crippled volume. Then I
restarted from that volume and all was hunky dory again. But it gave
me a bit of a scare I can tell you.

As you can see having three boot volumes isn't a luxury sometimes ...

Regards, Jörg.

Re: Help! I Wanna Crack A Lacie FW CDRW Case

2008-11-07 Thread yawg

Hi,

I opened a Porsche LaCie external (looks like a small brick with no
features at all) with a kitchen knife once and it was a lot of
fiddling around. It was a cheap sale item with a 500 GB disk in it. I
needed the disk as an internal. When I put a smaller disk back in I
broke something on the very fragile controller board and had to trash
the thing.

I'd stay away from LaCie. No warranty on the disk when you open up the
case. I'm using Diginote made by CoolerMaster external cases now, they
have a nice case with two Firewire- and three USB-ports. They use the
Initio chip. You can change disks without any tools at all and they
have a clever cooling system without fan:

Cloning problem

2008-11-06 Thread yawg

Hi,

Every time I try to clone my Panther Partition to a partition on
another disk I get the same error and CCC is telling me:

System/Library/CoreServices/BootX:Input/Output error

Can I just ignore the error or can it cause problems when I'm using
the "error"-clone?
What gives?

I have a Tiger partition too from which I start and then use the new
CCC to do the Panther clone, it's very fast but I read here that the
block clone has its disadvantages as the partition won't be optimized.

Anyway I still prefer Panther as all my Classic apps still work, quite
a few don't work under Tiger and show up in the dock as question
marks.

Also I can't find the option in the new CCC where I can decide if I
want a file to file clone done or a block clone.

I have a MDD 1.25 GHz, the latest model MDD that was produced and run
the latest versions of both Tiger and Panther.

I've been using CCC for years now with almost no problems. When
cloning in Panther I don't use the computer at all, cloning in Tiger
is done in the background as it is a block clone anyway from one
harddisk to another. I have four internal harddisks.

All hints are highly appreciated as always. TIA,

Jörg.
