This is possible, but requires an IMAP mail account, and access to
your mail server so you can do server-side filtering rather than use
Mail.app to do it. This is how I do it, so that all my filtering is
applied on the server. Some mail providers let you do this, so it pays
to check.

It also requires the will power to not answer your email

No it wouldn't help, not with digests.

What you seem to want is to get all the posts separately without
getting all the posts separately.

I guess!

What would further reduce the clunk factor is if you could select the
post from the digest that you want to reply to and hit reply and the
subject line is the relevant one instead of having to fish for it and
paste it in.

Recently, I don't know if anyone noticed, there have been
improvements: now one can click a list item in the "Topic Summary" at
the start of the digest and go to the post in the below. Good! Never
used to happen before.

And another improvement, when you hit reply to the digest, you do not
get a no-reply address text inserted into the the email To field but
the real McCoy instead. So that is good too and saves having to wipe
and reinsert the correct working To: address.

The closest you can come to a news reader with an email list is:

1) get the messages separately
2) filter them into folders appropriately
3) view them in threaded view

I found an applescript for Mail to burst mime digests into separate
emails here <http://homepage.mac.com/aamann/Misc_Scripts.html>

And then one needs to fish the one wanted out and to throw the others
out? Not for me, thanks. What I already do is not *that* hard. And
there is always the web based GG that can be logged into... I guess
that is not all that bad either... I am just saying...

If I got separate emails from LEM all day and night, could I have it
that my attention is not drawn to them? No ping, no red dots in the
dock next to the mail.app icon, they go into separate folder and
quietly and I look at them when I want. Think of it as a farmer
setting traps on his property, as he is sitting quietly doing his
accounts by the fire in his homestead, he does not want to hear each
trap go off or the agonising death throws of each little rabbit, he
will collect all on his regular run the next day. But he does want to
hear if a bear or a lion gets through his fences, so not all activity
is needed to be silent. Some he does not want to be distracted by and
others he does.

The issue here is that email and usenet news are quite different
things, and deal with completely different message structures.

Google ports usenet messages to their Google Groups format; but not
vice versa.

I was vaguely imagining a usenet group that was restricted so that
only members could actually post, the rest, the lower unwashed
classes could look on in envy but not touch.

I use Eudora 6.2.4. It's quite fast and no frills, like MT-NW.

I have filters set up to move all the LEM list traffic into a single
mailbox. That mailbox is set to be *unsorted*, so messages appear in
the order in which they were received. A quick option-click on a
subject pulls all the messages in that thread together. ...

If it works why fix it? Took me a while to get used to the lists, they're much
better than those non responsive forum web sites,
here you can get answers from knowledgeable folks fast and not have to wait for

into fewer ones and set them up so they can be easily cross-searched
on the Groups interface.

It really bugs me when we move away from better technology simply to
accommodate the masses.

In the beginning, ok well, sometime after strung monkeys and before
iPhones, there were USENET Newsgroups and Email lists. They were,
and are, fast and efficient for everything from conversation to
technical support to pure science. Their nature, as highly
distributed systems, made them nearly impervious to outages and data
loss. Life was good.

Then came the portals - AOL, CompuServe, etc - with their awful
dial-up BBS holdover "forums". Basically, they were environments
designed to make newbies comfortable.

Then came the Internet & the WWW. And like grotesque barnacles,
those frakking forums crept in.

Forums are like the old QWERTY keyboard. They're designed to be slow
in order to feel good on the technology of that day. I guess for
newbies they're still easy to understand. But when you need to
process a lot of data quickly, they're totally useless. And they're
a fragile single-point of failure... prone to data loss and other
outages.

Re: Is there usenet interface possible for this group?

or we could have a forums site. Go to www.forumotion.com, and see what i'm
talking about. A forums site is much better than having a whole network of
e-mails. Not only that, whatever you send to the G3-G5 list won't be seen by
everyone who is on. I have a site already setup on forumotion, and it is:

www.marktech.forumotion.com. If we were supposedly going to transfer the
G3-G5 list to there, i would gladly rename it to a name that would best
suit the Lem's site list. It's free to create a forums site. Btw, even
supposedly don't transfer the G3-G5 list to my site, i have it up for
different purposes. Yes it is a forums site that i have up for technology
and Macs, but it's also a site where i post online games.

You would have to ask your newsgroup access provider to carry us and
sync to/from using a email bridge.

That would be sweet to have all the LEM groups up on USENET!

Could a way be found to have this group read and posted to in a
normal usenet software like MT-NewsWatcher? Would make it so much
easier and less clunky to operate with. One of the best groups around
because nice people and moderated but not the best choices for access...
