Well, I have used Numbers in a pinch. The DB opens with the data in cells.
Fortunately my DBs were fairly small.

By the time of the Pioneer 113, the drives had gotten quite good.

But, they were still priced at about $100, whereas the price of SATA
burners had depressed to nearly $15.

Time waits for no man (nor for any product, either), and the time for PATA
burners was, alas, OVER!

Thanks, Pete.

I'll look into the adjustment as well. Hopefully I'll be able to attempt

Has anyone manually cleaned the laser lens on their DVD drive? I'm tempted
at this point to remove the drive, take it apart and attempt to clean it
manually until a replacement arrives.

I understand that the lenses on the original Pioneer 103 DVR drives must be
immaculate in order for them to work properly.

The difficulty is that PATA drives are no longer manufactured and the old stock
of half-height (normal optical drive sized) PATA optical drives ran out a long
time ago.

SATA optical drives are still available. Newegg regularly has them for less
than $20, so, if there is room, you might install a SATA optical drive with a
PATA to SATA adapter (some of the adapters will work in both directions).

Another alternative is to get this slim PATA optical drive:

This or similar slimline PATA to normal PATA adapter: http://r.ebay.com/Yy4C5d

And you may need this slim-line optical drive to full-size optical drive
physical adapter: http://amzn.com/B007C1KPQY

The drive is slot-load, so it may not work well if you G4 has doors that need
to be pushed open by a tray.

On an OS X Tiger 10.4 installation, nothing is required beyond CD 1 if you
deselect every possible Optional installation during the setup, and only check
"Install Base System". All of the other software can be installed AFTER by
inserting CD 2, 3, or 4 and double-clicking any of the installer packages.
Since virtually every piece of optional software has been upgraded and will
need the equivalent of a complete reinstall, it will be faster to download the
newer updates and install them directly than to install them from CD, and then
download and reinstall the updates. When I install Tiger I rarely ever use
anything past CD 1. A large part is your exact problem, the installation fails
with an error message that can be avoided with little or no downside.

Hello!

So this drive uses most likely a different partitioning scheme i.e.
partition table. Apple from the Power Mac era use APM, Apple Partition
Map. PCs and other x86 architectures of that era used MBR, Master Boot
Record. Some IBM servers are PowerPC based thou, so chances are it uses
a different partition map.

That sounds good so far. Make sure you select APM as partition map when
repartitioning, otherwise the current partition map will be used.

The explanation might be that the drive is still partitioned with a
Master Boot Record.

Your problem is that you haven't reformatted the HD to Apple Partition Format,
it's still Master Boot Record partition format. In Disk Utility, highlight the
HD itself, and then under Options select Apple Partition Format. Then select
however many partitions you want, and size them accordingly. You probably only
need a few GB for OS 9, and honestly you don't actually even need a separate
partition for OS 9, it can reside on the same partition as OS X and still be
dual bootable via the Option key boot. In most cases OS 9 runs faster as
Classic emulation under OS X than it does natively booted. The only reason to
boot OS 9 rather than run as Classic would be special hardware that lacks any
OS X support or drivers. Almost all printers, scanners, and other standard
hardware are still accessible from Classic.

No idea. I never used Google Reader. Given the age of the beasts

Why not use the original card? The X1900 is a PCIe card, right? I had one of
them too, and it also went bad after a very short period of time.

I’m having no problems whatsoever with the original nVidia GeForce 6600LE that
came with my Power Mac G5 “Late 2005”.
If you still have it, use it. For Photoshop (that’s what PS stands for,
right?) this will absolutely suffice. It will run any Dual-Link DVI monitor.

prohibitive. Mac was running very well until about 4 days ago.
Update: I hold down the "T" key and now have a screen with a nuclear sign.
The re-set button now restarts the mac into open firmware. Again if I type
reset-nvram then reset-all the mac restarts in open firmware. If I type
"boot" it restarts but goes to a kernal panic. So I seem to have my ATI 9800

tried one at a time.
Again, what should I do about replacing my Mac?

OK, A) thats a firewire logo, and B) about replacing the Mac, you
just need to go to the store and by a new one. I think you need to
reinstall the OS first before you go any farther.--

Because you can start in target mode with the machine connected to a booted Mac
via FireWire then you can reinstall the system on the G4 Gigabit.

Prompt /Command/Press [Enter] key:

0> reset-nvram[Enter]
0> set-defaults[Enter] (optional step)
0> reset-all[Enter]

After each command is correctly entered, Open Firmware will issue an
"OK". If it doesn't, you have not entered the correct command. When
the last command is executed, the NVRAM is reset, and the Mac reboots
automatically. If yours doesn't, then you made an error in typing the
commands. Redo the sequence of commands to reset the NVRAM. If you
need to enter a command to reboot the system, which you will NOT if
following the above procedure, it is not "boot", it is:

0> mac-boot[Enter]

You can test the PRAM battery to check the state of charge, which must
be 3.6V +/- 3%. If you don't have a digital multimeter, simply unplug
the system power cord, and remove the PRAM battery, reconnect the
power cord, start the system. It should boot up, and give an error
message about the "Time and Date" settings being wrong. Set the time
and date, and restart. If it boots without error, you know there is
nothing wrong except you have a dead/dying PRAM battery. Unplug the
system power cord and all external cables. Replace the old PRAM
battery with a new one, and press the PMU switch once, and once only,
immediately releasing the momentary contact PMU switch. Wait a minimum
of ten seconds, then reconnect the system power cord, then all other
external cables. Start the system. All should be well.

If not, try cold booting with the [Shift] key held down. Once you
reach the Desktop, restart the system. If no help, try booting the OS
DVD/CD, and repairing the HDD with Disk Utility. Restart and boot to
the HDD. If all is well, Repair Permissions using Disk Utility from
the HDD.

If your USB 2.0 PCI card is still not recognized/functioning, try
moving it to a different PCI slot (while you have it out, clean the
edge card connector contacts with a pencil eraser to remove
oxidation). If your card is not natively supported under the OS you
are running, but requires a driver to function, reinstall the card's
driver. If that fails, do a back-up of your HDD, then an archive and
install from the OS DVD/CD.

Try booting from an installer CD/DVD. If you can then it's likely the
OS on the HD is wonky. If you can boot then try running Disk Repair on
the HDs from Disk Utility.

Sorry if this sounds stupid, but just to be clear, you're typing them
as seperate commands, so "reset nvram" (press enter), then type "reset
all" (press enter)?

Also, try unplugging everything not needed to boot the machine and see
if that helps? Just leave the boot drive, video card, and 1 stick of
ram in (might need 2x256MB sticks as a minimum to get leopard to boot
tho)? Try a different video card? Will it boot into target disk mode?
Got another mac with FireWire?

You want to match it's dimensions and power ratings. The bolt pattern
size is usually good enough, especially for this application. The
thickness is important but in this situation isn't critical. You need
to match the voltage and current. Fans come in a variety of flowrates
and this needs to match the original fairly closely. Some fans list the
rated flowrate in CFM but not all. You're more likely to find the
current rating listed. The current doesn't need to match exactly but it
should be close.

You may need to pull off the ATI sticker on the fan to get the OEM
number; Mouser Electronics is a good source
for odd fans. Careful with it. I'
ve found oddball fans there, but I needed to use the original shroud,
as it was a custom part; the fan itself was standard.

Doug, follow the link and there is a compatibility chart which
includes the 9800 Pro.
Looks like a match.

Re: Replacement Fan for ATI 9800 Video Card

This is what I use on my Nvidia 6200. It also works on ATI products.
Easy to install and pretty quiet.

No answer but I'd also like to find one.

It has a 40 mm square bolt pattern and runs on +5 volts.

I have been lubricating mine. The procedure is to remove the four
screws that hold it to the board and lift it off. The rotor is then
easy to move and a half drop of lubricant can be applied. The sticky
label isn't going to allow lubricant to reach the powdered bronze
"oilite" bearing. The gun oil I use for my 0.22 target rifle lasts
about a half a year before I have to do it again. You want an oil
that won't form gum. Watch oil, sewing machine oil, but not motor oil
with its detergents or vegetable oil. Half a drop with a toothpick.
