Look again, Bruce. The text you quote is for the software that
accompanies the upgrade. The actual compatibility list is as
follows:
===
Compatible Macintosh Models
•
Power Mac G4 (Digital Audio)
•
Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver 2001)
•
Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver 2002 )

It's easy to get confused, but in general, upgrades for the earlier G4
models do not work in the MDD.

The LEM lists owner does that for his own protection. Apple can sue for that
kind of stuff. Smalldog may have an agreement in place with Apple to do this
that's simply not mentioned in the ad; they ARE an authorized Apple Dealer.

Very fast... except it wouldn't be dual. OS 9 lacks dual processor

Not true. I direct your attention to:
http://lowendmac.com/musings/07/0522.html

an article titled "3 CPU Upgrades for Mirror Drive Door G4 Power Macs"
where Dan Knight wrote:

"I sent emails to Sonnet Technology, Newer Technology, FastMac, and
Daystar Technology asking:

"'I've wondered myself for some time, as the owner of a Mirror Drive
Door Power Mac G4 (the original OS 9-bootable dual 1 GHz one) why
there seem to be no CPU upgrades for the last two generations of G4
Power Macs ...'

"Martin Muggee, Marketing Communications Manager at Sonnet
Technologies, wrote:

"'At this time ... we have offered dual 7447A processor-based
upgrades, available in 1.6 and 1.8 GHz upgrades (Encore/MDX G4 Duet)
since October last year ...'

"The 1.6 GHz ... and the 1.8 GHz ... both use the PowerPC 7447A CPU,
which has a 512 MB level 2 cache - twice as large as in the PowerPC
7455 used in my Power Mac. At a minimum, the 1.6 GHz one should
provide 60% more processing power than my dual 1 GHz Power Mac already
has ..."

At the time he was writing this, Dan had the exact same model MDD I
now have.

Also, I should note that the ebay auction stated:
"Applies to Following Computers: Power Macintosh G3 (Blue & White) and
Power Mac G4 (all models)"
not that I would put a lot of faith in what an ebay ad description
says ...

PS - At this point, both of the units offered in the auction have been
sold - but not to me.

Giga-Designs had a board which was specifically designed for either 100

Well, for anyone who might be interested and saw that I did in fact
place an "In Search Of" post on the Swap List looking for anyone
willing to sell their Dual 1.8 GHz Sonnet Duet CPU Upgrade for less
than the amount shown in the ebay auction ($266+$20 shipping), I got
exactly zero responses. Meanwhile, one of the two units that was
available in that auction has sold.

But after thinking about it over the weekend, I think I need a new(er)

I'd not compare the mini to a MDD G4.
The G4 has 6 bays, room for four PCI cards, etc.
I'd need to see the mini benchmarks, but it didn't grab me when it
first came out.

Re: Would you trust this ebay seller?

2011-02-19 Thread Bruce - in Orlando
Well, there you go. One of the main reasons I got this dual 1 GHz MDD
a few years ago is that it boots so nicely into 9.2.2. I can still
cling to some of my ancient software and still easily get to the many
files that are in that ancient software. in fact, I took the HD out
my previous G3 B&W and plugged it in here as a slave drive.

Also, I have had a long personal ove affair with accelerator cards
starting way back with the Daystar 50 mhz accelerator card for my Mac
IIsi. I still have Performa 580 with a motherboard from a 6500
plugged in - AND a Sonnet G3 accelerator card plugged into that! (and
a USB/Firewire combo card too!). Also a Power Color Classic with a
6500 mobo & G3 card. So the idea of tricking out my MDD before I give
up on it just seems like more fun than tossing the old gal and moving
on to an Intel Mac. There will be plenty of time for that.

NOT that I'm necessarily ready to pay $266 + $20 shipping ...

If you are willing to spend $286, look here for a used Mac mini
G4/1.25GHz for $199.99, plus shipping, but no disks included. The e-
mail bulletin said 10.5 Leopard is pre-installed.

Re: Would you trust this ebay seller?

2011-02-18 Thread Ashgrove
Bruce,

My personal experience with Chinese eBay sellers has been mixed. Most
of the time, they are perfectly kosher, but if anything goes wrong,
you have to ship the item back... to China...

The fact that I barely speak English and they tend to barely speak
Mandarin or Cantonese has never been a big help.

One way or the other, I do agree with John et al: it's not good value.
For less than $286, I bought a perfectly good Intel mini that runs
circles around ANY G4 computer. We get very attached to these
versatile old beasts that keep on going, but we gotta draw the line
somewhere. Just saying. Don't shoot me. Just look at the numbers.

Best,

Felix

$266 for dual 1.8GHz G4?
I paid less than that for my Dual 1.42GHz 2GB mem.
Is a 25% speed bump worth that cost?

(Don't get me wrong, I still love the MDD G4s in my house, running 3
of them, even though I have a Mac Pro. Just want to know where the
value is here. An otherwise 4 hr video encode drops to a bit over 3?
Not too exciting.)

Re: Would you trust this ebay seller?

Has anyone ever tried the time-tested commercial Letter of Credit approach in a
situation like this?

The money amount is small, but if you're suspicious . . .

You'd get your money back (after subtraction of your banker's fee, of course)
if the item is anything but as advertised.

He'd get his money once you've unpacked, examined, and accepted the item.

If he won't go for this approach, then he's almost certainly up to something
unsavory.

in my testing... it is always you may not received item. But simply you may
get your money back if you did not receive item and ask it before 45 days.
In any circumstances, you must obey the rule, if you do not receive item in
45 days... you open dispute... and get your money back. SO no problem.

I bought many items from china... Generally they are ok. But sometimes they
do not arrive.

Always a crap-shoot with a private, foreign auction.

That having been said, I have purchased computer goods and industrial
machinery goods from China-based sellers, and the worst that ever happened
was the air-mail package went West, through Europe, rather than East,
through North America, thereby adding thirty days to the transit time.

This seller is solid gold in my town. Never a complaint and instant
refund if dissatisfied. PayPal is your friend here also.
But IMHO the price is a little high? I usually make an offer and if
it's in reason they accept.
