Re: [Audyssey] Web site with audio games?
Hi Darren, I agree with the point you raised if possible the author/developers permission should attempt to be obtained before redistributing a title which has been abandoned. A case in point TJ is known to be ok to pass around because PB Games has publically stated it and Dark Destroyer, Duckblaster, etc are now effectively abandonware with full rights to pass around. However, recently someone was passing around one of ESP's games which had been abandoned, but Draconis now owns the rights to it. Josh publically stated not to share the program, but people did it anyway which was going against the current owners wishes. As for the issue you made about freeware I beg to differ on that point. Freeware is not necessarily abandonware and vice-versa. For example, STFC is freeware, but by no means is it abandoned or would I give people permission to hack it's source, and try and sell it, etc. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can make changes or update your subscription via the web, at http://audyssey.org/mailman/listinfo/gamers_audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Web site with audio games?
Hi Richard, No it is not certainly black and white, but I do believe that it would be best if permission can be obtained before offering abandonware. Allot of times the licence agreement attached with the software will state what should be done with the software. It is also something that should be based on a case by case basis. To use STFC as my example here. Even though STFC 1.0/1.2 are freeware when I release 2.0 I will consider 1.x versions abandonware. Now, since I would be abandoning 1.x versions for 2.0 does that give users the right to pass 1.x versions around? Well, suppose for example I don't want 1.x versions to be passed around do to bugs, because I no longer support it, because I think they should upgrade, whatever. It is down to what the users want verses what I want as the developer. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can make changes or update your subscription via the web, at http://audyssey.org/mailman/listinfo/gamers_audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Web Site with Audio Games
Hi John, Yes, exactly. A developer has to be careful about putting something in the public domain. For example, I liked Dark Destroyer by PB Games. Since it is now technically public domain I could write a clone version and sell it or at least offer it as a free download. However, even though it is public domain I would personally ask Philip for permission before doing something like that. yet, the game is at risk from being taken over by another developer, and Philip would be hard pressed if he later changed his mind and wanted it back. John Bannick wrote: Ari et al, As a commercial game developer, we can't put our games in the public domain, else we lose our intellectual property rights. What that means in practice is that by giving the people you want free access, you also give other people, and companies, the right to steal your stuff. Not so good! That's just the way the courts work. Richard's central repository is a fine source of games as it is. Though I understand that if the linked site for an abandoned goes away, or changes, then getting that game becomes problematic. Re: [Audyssey] Web site with audio games?
Hi Darren, What you are talking about is called intellectual property rights. In the Communist view everything should be communal property, and there is no such thing as individual property or wealth. It is a popular idea, especially in the open source movement, that believe software development should be free and source code should be available to everyone. Allot of folks on say the Blind Movie Buffs and the Lost in the Stacks lists have no quoms about sharing audio books, described movies, and some software. We have to ask ourselves a hard question. Just because they believe or think it should be ok to share those things, they justify it 101 ways and twice on sunday, does it really make it right? The fact is most of us here don't live in a communist society, and we live in a capitalist society. The rules of a capitalist society is that whatever you want you have to pay for it, you have to enter into legal agreements, and we have individual and company property. Believe it or not when you buy the latest Harry Potter book you are paying for the right to read it, and not the right to own it. You can't simply copy it page for page and share it around, copy the disks, because you have pirated it from the publisher and the author. Did you know when you buy software from Microsoft it is there legal opinion you have purchased the right to use the software only. You do not have the right to physically own that software. That is why they are going with product activation etc. They are in a sense trying to make it so they totally control weather or not you have the right to use the software, and if they find out you hacked, cracked, pirated, or done any other license violation they revoke your online activation and black list your product key. Anyway, getting back to the point of this long message is that generally laws state that software belongs to the owner or parent company that created it unless expressed in writing. We can't simply pass around music, software, books, just because we believe that makes us have the right for reason x. We can intellectualize the matter 11 ways, but you run the risk of coming up against the laws intellectualworld view on the matter.
Hi Marsha, The expiration on a copyright really depends on the country in question. Generally, I think 50 years is pretty average world wide unless of course the copyright hasn't been renewed. I've seen this many times for example an older book that is copyrighted in the USA is now public domain in Australia or the United Kingdom. One of these recently Ifound was Gone With the Wind. In the USA it still has copyrights attached, but the family/current owners didn't keep them up to date in other countries so it is public domain in various places in the world. Re: [Audyssey] Web site with audio games?
Hi Ron, In the case you mentioned where all efforts fail I'd probably go ahead to, but leave open the option to take it down if the author or owner makes a formal request to do so. Just from an observation here, but I suspect most audio games aren't copyrighted anyway. Allot of them probably haven't formally been presented to the copyright offices, and copyrighted which means that there isn't any copyright infringement in hosting the uncopyrighted game. Re: [Audyssey] Web site with audio games?
Hi Shaun, It is true usually there is a good reason why game x is abandoned by the developer. For example, take Giftinum. It was an ok game, but it could have been written allot better. In the scheme of things it left much to be desired for me. Self-destruct was not really that much of a big deal for me either. I tried it, but removed it a week later. I just couldn't get into it, and I personally didn't like it that much. My point being here that these games were abandoned by the developers, and they weren't exactly best sellers or top quality games to start with. Some of the abandonware games like Shellshock were dooddle games. Something the developer cranked out for a five minute game. I myself have written some dos games which are now technically abandonware. There is a STFC for dos, a Super Black Jack game, high low, and Hangman. They are not on the USA Games site because I am not technically supporting them at the moment. shaun everiss wrote: that true to. Also some games that are abandonware are total junk or not writen well. selfdestruct is ok, but in the scheme of things it was really not much fun after a bit. Tarzan juniour is good, but all the pb stuff was abandoned because of the quality. Except for tj, duckblaster and showdown the rest of the pb stuff sucked in my opinion. Shellshock was ok when I first got it but I can't honestly say I find it that interesting these days. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can make changes or update your subscription via the web, at http://audyssey.org/mailman/listinfo/gamers_audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Loan Wolf
Hi Sky, Are you speaking of the mission where you have to kill everything except the hospital ships? That is a pretty easy mission all things considered. Here is my strategy for taking on that particular mission. Spoiler! Spoiler! Spoiler! Major Spoiler! 1. As soon as the mission starts I change course to 315 degrees and set speed to 18. Alternatively you can use the manual course and sector to go to Area A5-33. 2. As soon as I reach 12 or 13 miles I slow down drop to 40 feet, raise scope, and wait. 3. If you played your hand right just about that time a destroyer will blindly pass directly in front of you. Pop a couple of torps into him. 4. Sometimes the second destroyer will come rushing out from nowhere like a screaming banchy, and you need to take evasive maneuvers, but usually he is too far out of range to respond to your first kill of the day. If he doesn't show by the time the tankers and transports arrive then he has not noticed your handy-work yet. 5. Drop to about 60 feet, lower the scope, resume course at 315 degrees, pass below the fleet, and as soon as you are clear of the fleet return to a depth of 40 feet. 6. Again assuming you timed this well about the time you reach 40 feet open your torpedo doors, because the second destroyer will just appear on long range. Line him up,and blow him away. 7. With the destroyer escort dead it is open season on the rest of the fleet. Change course to 135, and go to a depth of 15 feet. 8. if the fleet is in range try and match there spead by going to one-quarter or one-half speed, raise the gun, and basically aim and start blasting away. A few ships might run away, but with the fleet broken up you can use your radar to hunt down the fleeing ships, and kill them without much worry of hitting the hospital ships which skattered everywhere. Re: [Audyssey] Interesting Monty Problem
Hi John, I've worked with Java in the past for non-game related projects, and I agree it is a nice language. to design programs in. However, it isn't without its drawbacks and issues to deal with. First, there is the issue that not all the major screen readers support the java access bridge which means for example a Window eyes user who comes to the game's registration screen can't read it do to the fact GW Micro has been dragging their feet forever about giving us quality Java support. Second, based on my reading of Java input devices all I can find is code for keyboards and mice. There doesn't seam to be any game pad or joystick support let alone force feedback devices which I hope to eventually support. Third, I've studdied a bit in to the Java SDK's sound API, and while it does have the ability to stop, play, pan, sounds etc it isn't of the same quality of support I am use to with DirectX. Java doesn't appear to be equipped for really intensive audio games where there could be 50 or more sounds playing at once. Finally, I am not certain what to do about Sapi support under Java. I like the Windows Sapi voices, but if I go multiplatform I don't want to be stuck with something like FreeTTS, AKA Robby the Robot on acid, which is not the quality of Sapi voices I am use to using on a daily basis. If you have any ideas, comments, or suggestions about my comments above let me know. However, I am not certain Java suits my development requirements or standards. By the way, my games are written in C# not C++. Though, if I could get Visual C++ .Net configured right I would like to be able to actually write in C++ as that was my first favorite language, and is pretty rock solid without the hastle of the .net Framework. Hi Shaun, Ok? Well, first of all there aren't any ladders so I don't think you are running up and down ladders. Grin As for pressing control and space together the game was never designed for that particular key combo so if something weird happens it is because that particular key combo was never tried by me. shaun everiss wrote: yeah I couldn't reproduce that. One thing though, is its possible sometimes to push control and space and then run/jump at the same time, and then you start running up and down ladders, jumping and running and doing bad things. The way to solve this is by running back a load and then you are ok. Hi Karl, I've already taken care of this in the Beta 5 source. As of Thursday's latest build when you jump for a rope and miss it, falling into the room below, you will die instantly. Also if you climb to the top of the rope and jump off you will die so as of Beta 5 you should be more or less close to the ground or ledge you are jumping on to before you leap off or you could die. [Audyssey] Java as a Gaming Language
Thomas, Took this out of the Monty thread to be polite. Your points on Java vs. audio games are all well taken. Especially the comparison of DirectX vs the Java APIs. Sounds like C++ might be the way for you to go, in the future. Can you get some accessibility support for their IDE? For my own stuff, I'll stick with Java. I'm rock solid there and don't really want to go back to C++. However, I've saved your comments, and those from a number of folks on various fora, for next year's development efforts. aah, in some games I push one key and then another repeatedly to get a function or 2 running at once if I have to be quick. [Audyssey] Learning about AI concepts for game development
Hello. As part of several possible game development projects I may take on, I need to get up to speed on the state of the art in game AI design for computer opponents. I know a little about games of perfect information, such as chess, where the AI can use a finite positional algorithm to analyze possible future positions and assign them a score, then move to optimize the score. What I'm really interested in are games of imperfect information, where the AI must make decisions in the absence of perfect knowledge about the position and future movements of the opponent. It seems to me that the decision-tree/scoring system would rapidly get out of hand. I'm interested to learn how other developers handle this problem. Let us say, for instance that I were writing a computer to simulate combat in the Age of Sail. In the simplest case, a 1V1 ship combat, the AI would have to analyze at least the following: relative position, (where is the opponent's ship relative to my own bow and arcs of fire, and where is mine relative to opponent's bow and arcs of fire) Wind bearing: (Where am I in relation to the wind and where is my opponent?) Range: (the closer the more lethal a mistake is and the more lethal a good firing position is) Relative ship deadliness (If I'm a British frigate fighting an American schooner, I can be a lot more aggressive than if I'm taking on a French three-decker) Current damage: (I can be aggressive when I'm undamaged, but when I've two masts shot away and half my crew dead, I may wish to reconsider.) There are several other possibilities for the game state that I might need to track, but that'll do for now to illustrate the complexity of the problem. And that's only in two dimensions; if I take on the World War II air combat game project, there will be three dimensions to play with. For the moment, I'm unconcerned about audio environments, I'm trying to learn how to control my computerized opponents to provide a challenge for the human players. This method should be scalable to give different experience levels so that a novice player has an enjoyable experience, but a good player can ramp things up to keep the challenge. I'm looking to create games of high replayability. So, what is the theory behind AI decision-making in games of imperfect information? If you don't feel like summarizing your own approaches, could you direct me to some accessible resources where I might read about such things? Hi Jason, Well, good luck to you in week 11. Sounds like the Jets just had the upper hand this time by putting the ball in the end zone under the 2 minute warning. How ever goal line did work from time to time. at the end of the 3rd quarter it was tied 14 all. and then at the very end the Eagles were going to blitz against the Jets and they read my blitz and threw for 50 yards and as a result took it all the way in the end zone. I couldn't do nothing about it since it was after the 2 minute warning and time ran out. Re: [Audyssey] Java as a Gaming Language
Hi John, Yes, C++ is likely the most practical approach for me since assuming I tie the game only to the Win32 API, Sapi 5.1/5.3, DirectX 9 com libraries allot of these compatibility issues Monty has should all but disappear. Though, I then have to face programming with com components. I am not a fan of working with com components though I see how helpful they are. As for Visual C++ 2005 the issue isn't accessibility. It works generally well with Jaws 8 and Window Eyes 6.0 and 6.1 with or without scripts. The problem I am having is I am getting mysterious linker errors anytime I try to build aWin32 application using the Windows Platform SDK. I suppose at least initially I could begin the projects as a console application since I don't think Sapi or DirectX require the Platform SDK dependancies to compile and run in a command prompt window. The only thing I need Windows SDK for is probably to draw the window, registration screens, etc... John Bannick wrote: Thomas, Took this out of the Monty thread to be polite. Your points on Java vs. audio games are all well taken. Especially the comparison of DirectX vs the Java APIs. Sounds like C++ might be the way for you to go, in the future. Re: [Audyssey] Interesting Monty problem
Hi, I think that skulls should be killed if you land on them. What's frustrating is when you jump, clear the skull, and then the sword is used after you land, and you are moving away from it. I've also encountered, a reproducable, if ddifficult, situation in which multiple swords get used. Here is how it happens: 1. I am close to a wall with a skull coming toward me, moving away from the wall. 2. I jump right as the first sword is used. 3. I hit the wall and am put back where I started the jump. 4. The second sword is used either because I landed on the skull or I moved out of then back into its range. This leads to one other point I have, when you hit a wall, you should probably land in the space immediately next to the wall, rather than canceling out the jump.
