hi thomas,

When I learn visual basic, probably when i go back to college, and if I make
games and use copyrighted material: I will just use the sounds and if they
come after me they come after me, if not, oh well.

no, but aparently if you load an older version of avg say 7.5.428 its not
supported to update from that version anymore.
avg crashed and corrupted itself.
Getting the new version is no piece of cake either.
I finally got it, but you need the latest engine of avg to actually have t it
work.

well there was a version released, by shaned games.
But due to selfdestruct or something like that using some code from bpc
or something or something it went down, maybe that was xlstudios.
I forget but yeah shaned games went away in the same year it came up.
There was supposed to be a load of extra things to it.

Its weird how some stuff starts good then dies.
Things like the genisus project was shelved by esp because of size
alone.
I wouldn't mind a compiled version of the last build even if its real
crappy just to see what it would have been like.
A shame that that never happened.
then there was final defender by adora, starbase defender and flight
commander.
For various reasons these games were not completed.
All these were real good.
Then there was the orio games things where the makers of a game decided
for whatever reason not to release it and after that not to have a
company either.
Then there was the alchemy preorder thing and the list goes on, well it
doesn't but it could.
Before that esp almost closed, and then was able to reopen, and the
company that was there before adora was went closed for a bit.
I think the only origional players we have now that never quit or had
major issues are
pcs, and gma.
True there is draconis, usa, and vipgameszone as well as soundsupport
and the audiogames sites but those came later.
And before pcs there was ifarchive.
And before that, well before that I didn't have the net, I think in 1993
1994 I was with a few games on floppies.
and before that I had no computer at all.
I think we should have a history article about audyssey in the mag, the
communities, the small wars and such.
The community reminds me of a email mud if one can exist.
Another game that was part of the mag.
We had our arguments and wars, etc.

Show them the laws regarding service animals. Maybe the school where
you
trained with the dog would help by backing you up with the authority
that
the housing authorities don't think you have. Also, let them know that
you
will, willingly, get the police and any other authorities necessary

Script Update

Hi, in case anyone is interested, there is a new release of JMC (The Java
MUD Client) available
(V3.5.0.2), that has some pretty interesting new features...

In case you haven't heard of JMC before... The Java MUD Client can be used
with any MUD listed at MudConnect.com, and was long thought to be out of
development for many years. However, continued development was picked up by
a group of Russian developers within the last five years or so, and many bug

fixes and feature enhancements have been added since then. JMC is now truly
a feature rich MUD client for advanced MUD gamers. Including such features
as logging in HTML, sound playback support, Winamp controls, updated and
accessible help documentation, plus a new inovative combat protocol that can

be added for more realistic combat feedback (see the help for more info
regarding this).

Here is an excerpt from the download page at http://gutterstar.net/jmc.php

So... This is the latest release! New features include:
* The #Play command, which allows you to play any wave sound file, and
include any number of such commands within aliases, actions, or scripted
events!
* The #Winamp command, which allows you to completely control Winamp
directly from within JMC! Feel free to be truly weird, and add such commands
to aliases,
actions or scripted events? While you play, you can rock out to such old
time favorites as: "I'm Stuck On You Babe Like Bubble Gum In Your Hair",
and,
"My Favorite Bath-Time Gurgles"! No idea what use this feature is to a JAWS
user really, but at the very least, you can say you could...
* Full scripting support! Now you can create interactive programs using the
JMC object directly, and programmatically communicate with JMC using such
programming
languages as VBScript, JScript, XML, JavaScript, etc. Essentially, any
programming language that can reference JMC as an object!
* Numerous bug fixes and feature enhancements!

Also, the JMC Scripts for JAWS have been updated to V4.0 to support the new
version. The download page for this is at
http://gutterstar.net/jmc_scripts.php

Direct downloads...

Re: [Audyssey] Award catagories was: voting on game of the year

2008-01-31 Thread Dark
I agree on both counts there tom.

Speaking of the master list then, I would personally say all releases of new
gameplay should be considdered as viable entrance.

that is, all new games, all public betas and any updates to an old game
which improves the gameplay, such as Jim's golf and baseball.

I would not however count the vista compatible versions of the Draconis and
Vip gameszone games as eligeable, sinse, while such updates are very
handy and neccessary, they haven't brought any new game playing experiences
in 2007 which were not there in 2006. ditto with bug fix versions (though I
think all the games which have recieved bug fixes in 2007 also got new
gameplay additions so this probably doesn't count as much).

What do people think?

Beware the Grue!

Dark.

The game is set in the 1920's, and this orginazation known as "The
Group" wants you to go out and kill all types of creatures, I don't
know how the storyline goes but I will say that it does sound complex.

You can find the game at:
http://www.cthulhunation.co.uk/

Hopefully a few of you can try it out and let me know if it's
playable. I have already tried it, and as I said found it quite
confusing, but if I do indeed learn how to play this I'm gonna
continue doing it, it looks huge. It's set in a horror setting.

Enjoy.

Yeah, I agree. Word wrap would be nice. There's an in-game solution for it
but it slows down the text a tiny bit.

Hello there.

I play Ryzali Sanlinde when I actually log on.

Sigh, I like the soundpack with monkeyTerm but I hate the fact that there is
no word wrap. yes, I'm sure that I am being extremely petty and difficult,
but for me, if I have to read back through text for something and there is
no word wrapping abilities, it irks me to no end.

Right now, I am using MushClient, and I would really like to find out about
a soundpack for said client. I know that there is one, however, does it gag
all of the lines that the monkey term one does? You know, it's like having
half a dozen in one hand and six in the other.

I also heard that it is a little more difficult (not that I let a little
trouble stop me), to install in vista, and I'd like some clarification on
that.

I enjoy Miriani, but for me, that in character channel isn't nearly
in-character enough for my liking. I have enjoyed meeting those of you that
I have. You know who you are!

Re: [Audyssey] Award catagories

2008-01-31 Thread Che
I thought Phill posted just such a list here a week ago or so, which is
where I developed my list of categories from.
Feel free to post a category list you feel would work, but I think what I
posted is a good starting point, just needs to be fleshed out a bit.
I stand by my argument that having free games up against commercial games
is an unfair competition, regardless of how RR did in a limited vote.
If you gave 2000 decent but not great computers to 2000 people, and had
them vote with 200 that had superior computers asking them which was best,
it is obvious which would win by sheer number of users of the free system.
This is not to say free games are inferior to commercial games at all, but I
think you get my point.
Phil, if you are out there, do you have a revised list of games for 2007
that is all inclusive?
  Later,
  Che

[Audyssey] copyright solution

2008-01-31 Thread Che
Well, it seems to me there is an easy solution to this problem.
Make your game with generic sounds for everything, don't give it a title
that is a licensed name, then upon game release a zip file mysteriously
appears on the net that has all the sounds from the Star Wars universe or
whatever that neatly plugs into the game and replaces all sounds.
The zip replacement would have no trackable source, and certainly would
not have anything to do with the company that released this generic game, it
just happened that a fan released a sound pack for it as far as they know
and nothing they can do about it in any realistic way.
This would cut into sales a bit, as you would not have a household name
to market the game with, but word would get out quickly enough amongst the
game community about what the deal was, and the sound pack would soon be
shared amongst players.
If you use this idea, you can send a cut of the profits to
[EMAIL PROTECTED], grin.
  Later,
  Che

Show them the laws regarding service animals. Maybe the school where you
trained with the dog would help by backing you up with the authority that
the housing authorities don't think you have. Also, let them know that you
will, willingly, get the police and any other authorities necessary
involved.

 Hi,

You can change both the language and the music just by changing the
.ogg-files in the Sounds\En-folder. Alternatively, you can create a new
folder, such as Fr, and put your French language files in there. Then
 in
racing.cfg you can change your language settings. It's indeed a little
 weird
that the game crashes if you don't use the exactly right bitrates and
 such...

 Hi,

How do you create a language pack for topspeed2? And, can you change
 the
music that is played in the menus?

Re: [Audyssey] copyrights

2008-01-31 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Josh,
Not legally. All an LLC means is that USA Games, not me personally,
would get sued for damages and they could get a court order to close USA
Games down or charge royalties from USA Games which would kill the
company in any case.
You have to understand here I started USA Games as a hobby. I didn't
plan to start USA Games to fight legal battles with Lucas, Edos,
Activision, etc on their polacies and licenses. I don't like it any
more than you do, but sometimes you just can't win. Sometimes you need
to face the facts of life. That fact is life isn't fair and never was.

Re: [Audyssey] Award catagories was: voting on game of the year

2008-01-31 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Che,
First, before we actually decide upon catagories what we should do is
compile a master list of games produced in the last year. The games
themselves should be able to give us an idea of what catagories are
possible for this year. possabilities.
As for commercial verses fre I am not totally sure that a free game
would beat a commercial game. It is true there could be more players for
that free game, but based on the results of JJ's 2007 awards Rail Racer,
a commercial game, won anyway. Other nominations were the Homer game
and Bopit which are free. Admittedly though that could be they were
simply out classed, but that only could prove my point a commercial game
could beat a free game in voting.

Re: [Audyssey] copyrights

2008-01-31 Thread Bryan
It's funny, but I'm having to do something similar in my life. You'll
forgive me for straying from the topic of games briefly I hope, but I'm
having some difficulty with the housing authority letting me get a guide
dog. Right now they seem to think they can count the service animal as a
pet, so they're telling me that if I were to get a guide dog and later want
a pet I'd have to get rid of my guide dog. But it goes back to what you said
about companies not listening to you as an individual, but if you have some
sort of atourney or other legal personality you at least stand a chance.
Time is an illusion, lunchtime doubly so.

Re: [Audyssey] copyrights

2008-01-31 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
Well, as i pointed out so many times on this list alone it goes beyond
greed or a lack of desire to offer accessible games for us. It is simply
we don't have the numbers to prove we actually matter. They aren't going
to spend x amount of time to add accessibility for game x for just
$2000, $5000, or $1. Their least paid game developer makes at a
minimum 5 or 6 times that amount per year. Making accessible games for
blind people is something that has to pay off for them, or they simply
will not do it.
Let us assume Lucas Arts or someone takes the time to make one of there
new games fully accessible. If there marketing research returns no
increase in sales, or they only pull in 2000 blinks with their new game
they are going to state it was a failior and not a success, because
success for these people is several thousand blind gamers. Do you guys
see the problem?
However, on the other hand they are not exactly going to hand the job
over to someone else for free. They are in the business of making money,
licensing their product, and legally have the power of saying who can do
what.

Re: [Audyssey] copyrights

2008-01-31 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Bryan,
That is exactly the issue I am facing. If I release my Tomb Raider game
and Star Wars games as fan fiction, make them open source, etc it might
be enough to cover my butt legally since I did not technically make any
money off the games. However, that still breaks the part of the end user
license agreement that states that all sounds, music, pictures, etc are
for my soul use, and may not be transmitted, sublicenced, etc without
the expressed permission of the copyright holder. If so that really
screws me if I want to even offer a free version of the game.
What all this really boils down to is if I really want to work with
copyrighted materials I will have to retain an attorney to give me the
necesary legal view with copyrights to find out exactly what I can and
can not do. Perhaps an attorney might be able to get some permission
from the various licensing offices for the copyright holders to do what
I want to do legally. Generally, speaking my previous experience with
companies is they won't listen to you as an individual, but they will
listen to your attorney if they make the request through more legal
channels. However, obtaining an attorney to do this is not exactly a
cheap prospect.

Re: [Audyssey] copyrights

2008-01-31 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Josh,
Unfortunately, that kind of thinking doesn't do anyone any good. That
won't stop them for suing for damages if they decided to take it to that
extreme. Besides which if they get a court order to destroy my materials
and I fail to comply with that court order that could be seenas contempt
of court.
About the only way I know of to protect myself from that type of
situation would either clone the software without using trade marks or
design all of my copyrighted games under a open source license
agreement. If I go with an open source license agreement that puts all
of my hard work in the public domain with no financial backing for the
product. Yeah, you guys get a free game, but what money or financial
gain do I get out of it?

[Audyssey] Peg solitare

Hi ari.

I believe fox and geese is a two player game you can play on the same board
with similar rules to draughts, though I don't really know much more about
it.

I mention the solitare patience business though because I remember when we
were discussing blank block there was a bit of confusion about the name.

i hope you enjoy spag, it's deffinately worth reading. I should
actually check it again myself sinse I haven't played any If for a while.

Beware the Grue!

2008-01-31 Thread ari
Hi Thomas,
It's very hard to get individual, or multiple zipped files of Audyssey up to
the latest one anymore. I looked for it last time, and every site I looked
at stopped at 50. Also, why did Paul Henrichsen site stop, that was a great
resource for games and audyssey.

Yeah Dark, I agree, I think it's also like the Draughts Checkers thing, we
also call it Patience here, and I know the RNIB and the SANCB here sells
accessible versions of Solitaire, although I'm still not sure why the RNIB
call it something weird like Fox and Geese or something like that. Thanks
for the magazine link though, I never knew about this, will look at it.

Hi Bryan,
Oh, yeah. Lucas Arts is very protective of their Star Wars copyrights.
Have you read the Star Wars terms of use lately? If not here is a small
quote from the Star Wars terms of use snipped from their license agreement.

Quote
STAR WARS; STAR WARS
: EPISODE I THE PHANTOM MENACE;
STAR WARS: EPISODE II ATTACK OF THE CLONES;
STAR WARS
: EPISODE III REVENGE OF THE SITH; STAR WARS
: EPISODE IV A NEW HOPE;
STAR WARS: EPISODE V THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK; STAR WARS
: EPISODE VI RETURN OF THE JEDI (collectively referred to herein as the “
Star Wars
Pictures”) and all other Lucasfilm productions, and all logos,
characters, artwork,
stories, information, names, software, and other elements associated
thereto are the sole and
exclusive property of Lucasfilm Ltd.. Any use of any of the materials on
this Site
other than for private, non-commercial viewing purposes is strictly
prohibited.
The sale, auction, lease, loan, gift, trade or barter, or use of any of
the Star Wars materials
contained herein, for any other purpose except as expressly permitted
pursuant to
these Terms of Use, in any form, media or technology now known or
hereafter developed,
including the use of any of the aforementioned materials on any other
Web site or
networked computer environment, without a prior written consent from
Lucas, is expressly
prohibited. Except as expressly provided for under the Terms of Use, the
creation
of derivative works based on the materials contained herein is expressly
prohibited.
You may download one copy of the materials on any single computer for
your personal,
non-commercial home use only, provided you keep intact all copyright and
other proprietary
notices. Modification of the materials or use of the materials for any
other purpose
is a violation of Lucas’s copyright and other proprietary rights.
End quote

That is only part of the license agreement, and what I did show is very
strongly worded. I read later on in the agreement that any ideas,
emails, stories, pictures, etc you create with Star Wars instantly
becomes the property of Lucas Film and Lucas Arts no questions asked. So
even if I wrote such a game according to the terms of use section of the
license agreement they have the right to take the game away, destroy it,
or whatever they want to do with it. Kind of hard to fight a license
agreement like that in court blind or not.
While some developer can sit around saying they won't bother me because
I am blind that is being a bit unrealistic. They might not, but then
again they have every legal right to do so. Their license agreement
sounds like they are pretty serious and they don't take very kindly to
any copyright violation in any way shape or form. Even though they may
be in the wrong for not offering an accessible SW game for us.

2008-01-31 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Ron,
I agree just splitting games into free and commercial doesn't quite fit
the bill here. I can see where games like Sarah and Montezuma's Return
could compete or be nominated under the same catagory because they both
fit into a sort of action genre. However, Rail Racer is a great game,
but it is a completely different style of game. Rail Racer vs Sarah
doesn't quite match because it is that apple and oranges thing again.

Hi Shane,
i know of two places where you can get all the magazines. Kelly has an
Audyssey magazine mirror, but I can't for the life of me remember the
address.
You can also usually get most of the mags from
http://www.audiogames.net
which is like the central resource for anything audio game related.

solitare games were more traditionally called patience, my Gran

2008-01-31 Thread Dark
appologies Jim, I forgot about golf v10 when thinking about sport,
either way you seem to have a monopoly there as well ;D.

My gut reaction would be that only a game simulating real professional motor
racing, such as i believe Usa race way will would count as a sport.
Afterall, with the exception of super football (which seems based on the
Serbuteo table football game), I think all the sport games we have follow
the real world rules of their sports fairly accurately, golf and
Baseball certainly do.

Rr is deffinately set in it's own scifi world and has it's own rules, rather
than following any racing standards I think, ditto with Homer, though that
would be the world of springfield and the logic of the groning racing
association.

sorry just my thoughts there.

Re: [Audyssey] joining the Interactive Fiction Group

2008-01-31 Thread Dark
well, sinse you can just read the groups page like a web forum rather than
having messages delivered to you, traffic doesn't matter.

but things did seem to get a tad technical, in discussion about the parza
and various merrits of If languages, and how game X could've been better for
being in language Y.

that was a couple of years ago though, so it might have changed, or i
might just have caught a particular bundle of tech discussion.

For keeping up with If releases and reviews though, i'd recommend the web
magazine Spag, - which certainly isn't too technical and is often quite
fun.

You can read it online at http://sparkynet.com/spag/frame.html

Hmmm, it's a long time sinse I checked that.

Beware the Grue!

Dark.

Re: [Audyssey] Question about 7-128 Game Book.

2008-01-31 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi John,
Yeah, I think a speech range of 150 to 450 is just fine for me.
Though, personally I think you might want to go by 25 units for some
other users who may want to more fine tune the speech rate. Using 50
units is ok with me, but like I said for some other users 25 may be better.

Re: [Audyssey] Award catagories was: voting on game of the year

2008-01-31 Thread Dark
Hmmm, that's certainly true about the different sized player base, but I
wouldn't have commercial games always totally separate from free games in
all catagories either.

How about best commercial game, best free game, and then generic genre
catagories such as action and stratogy and board/card/puzle.

I know this isn't an ideal solution, but having free and commercial
distinctions in each genre catagory would imho chop things up too much, and
also be more work for you to impliment.

Beware the Grue!

Dark.

Even if there is more then one review of a given game that's not a bad
thing. Different people can have differing opinions about a game.

Re: [Audyssey] top speed language packs and music

2008-01-31 Thread Davy Kager
Hi,

You can change both the language and the music just by changing the
.ogg-files in the Sounds\En-folder. Alternatively, you can create a new
folder, such as Fr, and put your French language files in there. Then in
racing.cfg you can change your language settings. It's indeed a little weird
that the game crashes if you don't use the exactly right bitrates and
such...

Besides baseball version 4, I also released golf version 10 in 07.

Just wondering, isn't auto racing via Rail Racer a sport? Would motorcycle
jumping via Homer on a Harley be a sport? It's not exactally a racing game.
Maybe a fpd First Person Driving. Life version 3 and Snakes and Ladders
version 2 would be board games, but what kind of game would Simon be? I guess
like Bop It only it besides concentration and speed it also requires memory.
