Re: [Audyssey] fallthrough

2009-01-01 Thread dark

Hi Zac.

The basic problem is I was attempting to type commands and the game didn't
seam to acknolidge them correctly.

for instance I was trying to read the notice at the first starting location
with the obvious read notice and the game for some reason would assume I'd
put in a directional command.

I also tried info or'gn to get info on the city, and got responses like I
don't understand or or I don't understand O

I'm mildly confused as to this, sinse I didn't have this difficulty running
Eamon delux at all, - actually I can wiz through Eamon combats pretty
fast these days.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Perhaps if there are compatibility issues, as I said, maybe Louis Briant
could help with this one too?

Hi Dark,
Could you maybe elaborate a little bit on what exactly your problem is?
(The command syntax of Fallthru is generally close to Textadventurese,
with a few noteable exceptions such as the handling of containers and a
few odd preference issues, such as take instead of get, which can
fortunately be abbreviated to tk.)
I have some experience in fiddling with the game and can help if
necesary. I'm just not sure what exactly you're doing and what you're
expecting to happen, let alone what's actually happening.

Cheers,
Zack.

Okay, i've tried fallthrough, but my commands don't seem to be being
picked up properly. H, maybe Louis could do the same here as he's
done for some other dos games and make the interface a bit more smooth?

either that, or I'm doing something wonky in running the thing. ditto
with anacrion, though the menues there and random command history made
things even more weerd.

Re: [Audyssey] fallthrough

2009-01-01 Thread Zachary Kline

Hi Dark,
This doesn't sound familiar at all, I'm afraid. I use Window-Eyes
myself, and never had any problems of the sort you describe. Perhaps its a
consequence of Hal'sVirtual Focus getting things confused somehow? (That '
in or'gn might be an issue, I have no idea.)
Also, reading the notice with read notice is exactly what you want to
type. Keep in mind that when the game displays error messages, as well as
certain other text, it waits for you to press C to continue and refuses to
acknowledge your typing anything else until you do so.
I'm sorry I'm not more helpful here. The only real advice I can give
you is to make sure that you've typed and the game has recorded exactly what
you wanted to type. (It might help to reread the second line of the screen,
where user commands are echoed.)
I do hope you can figure Fallthru out. It's one of those very neat
games, in my opinion, and worth the trouble.

Best and do let us know what you find out.
Yours,
Zack.

Re: [Audyssey] fallthrough

2009-01-01 Thread dark

Hi Zac.

I doubt it's the virtual focus, sinse when in vf mode nothing whatsoever
keystroke wise gets transmitted to the application, i actually have to
togle vf on or off betwene reading the screen and typing (though after
almost 7 years of playing text adventures, this is pretty much a reflex
reaction by now).

I did wonder if it was the game speed though, sinse it only seems to be
tracking some text character in put.

I'll have another go, and also try it on my desktop when i get back to my
flat on saturday.

the intro document and review both look great.

[Audyssey] buying itemes in fallthrough?

2009-01-01 Thread dark
Hi.

I'm sorry about yet another message on this, but I'm running into another issue
I'm afraid.

I can't buy any items.

whenever I type in buy knife buy pack or whatever (as the commands list
suggests), I get the message lay down enough money first

However when I try to give the shopkeeper money it just says out of context?

Any suggestions?

Hi ron, I'll take a look at that one as well.

Btw, for infocom games, you can actually get many of them from

I've got them and played them with winfrotz. If people are worried about

2009-01-01 Thread Zachary Kline

Hi Dark,
In this case, the problem is one of syntax. When the game says lay
down enough money before you buy it means literally that. You want to type
something like drop 7 ralls, or whatever, before buying anything.
You don't need to worry about making change: the game does that for you
automatically, though you do have to type take 35 ems or however much
you're left with after you're done buying things.
As a note, the give command is only useful for the most part in yielding
to warriors and giving items or food or whatever to peasants.

Hope this helps.
Best,

Hello.

I'm really sorry, Eamon has been under discussion for a while now on the
list, but obviously having just joined you wouldn't have come across
it, I should really have thought of that.

No, eamon isn't a mud (I don't myself really know much about or play muds,
but that's another topic).

It's a text adventure and rpg system originally created in the 1980's for
Aple computers, with literally hundreds (about 250 I think) of
different adventures written for it over the years by many people.

Eamon Delux is a pc port which comes with many, possibly all, the
adventures.

you can read about, and download it at at
http://www.eamonag.org/pages/eamondx.htm

As I said, I'm well impressed with the game thus far, however there are a
few things you need to do to get it to run properly and interact with a
dscreen reader ssmoothly:

1: unfortunately, Eamon delux starts of is in a dos style console window,
and begins running fullscreen, at which point a screen reader can't interact
with the window, so you'll need to press alt enter to get it back to a doss
window again. You'll probably have to do this whenever you go back to the
main hall or start an adventure, but the rest of the time things will
be fine and it doesn't cause trouble as long as you know it's needed (you'll
probably have to do this for the initial installing process as well).

2: The main hall, where you buy weapons and spells and from where your
character can go on the various adventures, by default runs a
graphical, and consequencially inaccessible version. You'll need to go
to the utilities menue when you've installed the program (7th option on the
main menue), and select the second option there which will use the text
version of the main hall.

3: irritatingly, running in a window, some text will be chopped off the
screen. Thanks to Steven for letting me know, this is however easily
fixable. Open the eamondx.bas file with notepad and change the line:

Screen 0width 40 cls colour 4.0

To read width 80 (I suggest just finding the word width with ctrl f and
changing it to 80), and all text should appear fine.

Then, just have fun! imho Eamon is a really nice mix of combat and
interactive fiction style puzles, and has a rather interesting experience
system.

I also like the fact that you take the save character on multiple adventures
and get experience with them in weaponry and such, as well as earning
lots of gold.

anyway, i hope this helps.

Beware the Grue!

Dark.

Re: [Audyssey] Eamon deluxe great fun!

2009-01-01 Thread dark

Hi.

Other than doing some whacky things with the edx directory (which I've
personally not got to work), you can't change the install location, it just
defaults to installing into C:\Eamondelux

Fortunately, it's not a big folder, doesn't cause any issues with other
programs, is quite easy to create shortcuts to to make a program group (as
I've done), and can just be deleted streight off if you have a problem with
the game.

while for neetness I would've liked the game installed into either my fun
program files or text games directories, i really don't worry about it being
where it is.

I just need to sort out how the odometer works so I don't get lost in that

Re: [Audyssey] buying itemes in fallthrough?

2009-01-01 Thread Zachary Kline

Hi Dark,
Yep, after you greet warriors and read the information they provide they
do vanish. I always thought of it as just passing them by along the road or
somesuch.
As for the odometer, that's easy enough for me to explain. It keeps
track of the number of consecutive legions you've gone in a certain
direction. (E.G. 7n means you've gone 7 straight north. For some reason,

Hi Zac.

thanks, that seems to work, and seems to be the method for all item
handling, eg, filling containers.

If you don't mind one other question, I met a warrior and use thed the hi
command to check his/her strength. After checking that however and reading
the comment, the warrior just sort of vanished, which was odd.

I just need to sort out how the odometer works so I don't get lost in that

Hi Dark,
In this case, the problem is one of syntax. When the game says lay
down enough money before you buy it means literally that. You want to
type something like drop 7 ralls, or whatever, before buying anything.
You don't need to worry about making change: the game does that for
you automatically, though you do have to type take 35 ems or however
much you're left with after you're done buying things.
As a note, the give command is only useful for the most part in
yielding to warriors and giving items or food or whatever to peasants.

Hope this helps.
Best,
Zack.

I can't buy any items.

whenever I type in buy knife buy pack or whatever (as the commands

Hi Dark,
Yep, after you greet warriors and read the information they provide
they do vanish. I always thought of it as just passing them by along the
road or somesuch.
As for the odometer, that's easy enough for me to explain. It keeps
track of the number of consecutive legions you've gone in a certain
direction. (E.G. 7n means you've gone 7 straight north. For some reason,

2009-01-01 Thread Zachary Kline

Hi,
Yep, money-making can be a little annoying at first. I never went in
for the resource gathering bit myself. There is an article by Michael Feir
in Audyssey Issue 36 I think, which gives some advice for early game
strategy.
There is a spot near Or'gn which you'll eventually learn of if you talk
to peasants or warriors which will help teach you knife throwing, a very
useful ranged attack early on. You can use it when you're challenged and it
might give you a bit of an advantage.
Yes, the game is tedious at points, and the map is huge, but it's worth
the struggle I think. Just takes some initial grappling.

Enjoy,
Zack.

Re: [Audyssey] Scifi exploration online game?

2009-01-01 Thread dark
Sounds good indeed Tom, - particularly as by summer I'll have read
enough starwars books to get all the background, lol!

I do stil however find myself incredibly surprised that people are having to
write this kind of game from scratch, rather than there being one already.

graphically, I can think of a number of rpgs that fit the bill, -
allbeit most are magitech anime style scifi rather than traditional, and of
course eeve online has as much potential for single player exploration
missions and quests as world of warcraft.

then again as I said, Sryth is probably the only thing I've found in a
fantasy setting which does this, so I shouldn't be overly surprised at the
lack of something scifi.

Hi Dark,
Actually, by summer i should have something that is right up your alley.
As you might recall a couple of weeks ago I was talking about a text based
RPG game engine for Mac, Linux, and Windows. Over teh holidays i have
taken some time to write up some initial code for it, and one of the game
ideas I have been sampling with is a Star Wars roll playing fantacy game
during the clone wars. You can basically pick from a list of popular races
and classes and train to be a Jedi at the jedi temple. As you get better
you can then travel to various worlds and get involved in various
missions.

of course as these are works of fiction I'm also interested in the

compared to S3. eitherway though, S4 isn't an online game. Basically,
what I'm looking for is Sryth in space, ie, you have your spaceship, fly

Re: [Audyssey] fallthrough

2009-01-01 Thread Zachary Kline

Hi Dark,
Could you maybe elaborate a little bit on what exactly your problem is?
(The command syntax of Fallthru is generally close to Textadventurese, with
a few noteable exceptions such as the handling of containers and a few odd
preference issues, such as take instead of get, which can fortunately be
abbreviated to tk.)

H, maybe Louis could do the same here as he's done
for some other dos games and make the interface a bit more smooth?

either that, or I'm doing something wonky in running the thing. ditto with
anacrion, though the menues there and random command history made things
even more weerd.

[Audyssey] New Rail Racer tournament

2009-01-01 Thread Che
  Hi all,
I wanted to let those Rail Racers on list know about our new rail racer
tournament in case they aren't subscribed to the rail racer list.
We're holding 2 tournaments starting early next week, one for new players,
and another for the old pros.
The online tournaments are probably the most exciting part of rail racer, and
if you have the full version of the game, you are really missing out if you
don't sign up to compete with others online.
I have created a robust web based tournament system that allows players to
chat with each other about the tournament, talk smack to their opponents and
arrange races in a timely and convenient way. The system keeps track of all
results for this double elimination style competition, and is a model for my
future games to hold tournaments as well, such as the upcoming hearts card game.
If you have the full version, simply go to the tournament page of the rail
racer site and sign up, notifications will be sent out to all registered
players once the tournament is green lit.
Hope to see you on the track soon,
Che

Re: [Audyssey] Scifi exploration online game?

2009-01-01 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Dark,
Yeah, I know. It really comes down to the same old problem. If it is
accessible it tends to lean to PVP combat or another space trading type
game. If it is something we might actually like with a complete RPG
story mode and setting it probably isn't screen reader friendly. It is
usually a lose lose situation for us. Writing my own accessible RPG
games was the only thing I could come up with that remotely sounded
reasonable.

dark wrote:
Sounds good indeed Tom, - particularly as by summer I'll have read
enough starwars books to get all the background, lol!

I do stil however find myself incredibly surprised that people are
having to write this kind of game from scratch, rather than there being
one already.

graphically, I can think of a number of rpgs that fit the bill, -
allbeit most are magitech anime style scifi rather than traditional, and
of course eeve online has as much potential for single player
exploration missions and quests as world of warcraft.

then again as I said, Sryth is probably the only thing I've found in a
fantasy setting which does this, so I shouldn't be overly surprised at
the lack of something scifi.

Beware the Grue!

Dark.

   mud.legendmud.org Port
It is a really good Mud with 3 eras of time you can travel and explore
   in.
Ancient, Medieval and Industrial. There are lots of quests to do in the
game, lots of mobs to be killed for xp and lots of adventure and
   exploring
to do within the world. If you try this game, which I really hope you
   will,
please don't be afraid to ask people questions if you have any. I will

Re: [Audyssey] Scifi exploration online game?

2009-01-01 Thread Jason Allen
Yeah, Spore uses procedural functions to create an entire galaxy. It was a
great concept, but a little neutered in that game. The only other game off
the top of my head that did that was a space game called Elite. Actually,
the BBS game Tradewars also created a universe in that fashion, but it was
very limited. The magic behind a procedural universe is that it takes no
resources at all to store. So I guess Tradewars really didn't fit the bill
there after all.

A universe like that constrained to a few rules to make it like a game would

Hi zack.

I haven't actually tried fallthrough myself. on my old desktop,

whenever I
attempted to run dos programs under xp, I got truly horrible lag

issues.

On my laptop and new desktop though, these don't seem to happen

at all.

I'll investigate fallthrough sinse that sense of infinite

possibilities

sounds deffinately fun.

Oh, and to anticipate questions, it can be downloaded from
http://www.classicgaming.com/ascii/

though they concentrate on rogue and other aski graphics games,

they also
seem to have some doss text adventure games as well,

including

fallthrough.

Hi,
Agreed. A friend of mine walked me through a brief session

of Spore a
while back. The really neat thing was that aforementioned

procedural
generation along with the uploading of user content. The two

combined to
create what were, I gather, very visually distinctive and unique

worlds.

The sense of possibilities and exploration there was tremendous.
It's this sense of infinite possibilities which I like about

Fallthru,

even though that isn't in the scifi mode and isn't multiplayer.
Best,
Zack.

that would be interesting to create your own universe,

creatures, etc,

from the user point of view.
I have a friend that has just got spore.
You are able to create life from components, and have a semi age

of

empires with it.
work through the ages till you get to the space age, and then

colonise

other worlds, etc.
He showed me part of it it is sertainly interesting.

Hi Dark,

This is something I've been interested in making. One thing I

love is
procedural generation. You can create an entire universe using

only that.
The trick of course is the game play and making it interesting.

Right now

it
has to stay an interest only while I work on Entombed. I'm

fascinated by

the
possibility though.

Re: [Audyssey] Scifi exploration online game?

2009-01-01 Thread dark

Hi Tom.

actually, it's lack of this type of game which has been the biggest
temptation for me to go into programming myself, - though of course,
life circumstances, my phd, stage performances and the fact that I'd
actually like to get some proper writing done (sinse that's I think going to
be my main career path), have all got seriously in the way.

this is why I've been such a big supporter of the expanded gamebook formats
such as Sryth, age of fable and the Chronicles of arborell.

I'm just rather sad nobody has exploited the exploration potential of scifi,
sinse imho it's potential is just as great as fantasy as a setting, -
pluss it lacks so many sterriotypes that often get in the way of building an
interesting fantasy world.

eg, in a fantasy game you can just state that goblins are an evil race of
demihumans and leave it at that, where as to setup an evil alien race like
the daleks or the shadows takes work in background.

Of course good fantasy game writers such as Mathew yarrows in Sryth can also
give goblins etc extra info and background, - but it's horribly easy
imho (as the generic grindable monsters in pvp games show), to just state
goblin warrior, 5 hp and leave it at that.

Oh, and on the monster background, this is one of the things I'm really
liking in the entombed game.

Hi Dark,
Yeah, I know. It really comes down to the same old problem. If it is
accessible it tends to lean to PVP combat or another space trading type
game. If it is something we might actually like with a complete RPG story
mode and setting it probably isn't screen reader friendly. It is usually a
lose lose situation for us. Writing my own accessible RPG games was the
only thing I could come up with that remotely sounded reasonable.

dark wrote:
Sounds good indeed Tom, - particularly as by summer I'll have read
enough starwars books to get all the background, lol!

I do stil however find myself incredibly surprised that people are having
to write this kind of game from scratch, rather than there being one
already.

graphically, I can think of a number of rpgs that fit the bill, -
allbeit most are magitech anime style scifi rather than traditional, and
of course eeve online has as much potential for single player exploration
missions and quests as world of warcraft.

then again as I said, Sryth is probably the only thing I've found in a
fantasy setting which does this, so I shouldn't be overly surprised at
the lack of something scifi.

Beware the Grue!

Dark.
