Re: [Audyssey] Iron Realms Stuff
From what I heard, Earth Eternal is currently the only game they're working on that isn't geared tward roleplay. Unfortunately for us I think this game will be inaccessible. As soon as they say Graphical, 3D, and for the PC, I get worried. That is, unless, they're taking the suggestion you suggested about making their other games without the roleplay aspect. On Jan 17, 2009, at 2:12 AM, Shadow Dragon wrote: I have to agree, usurper is pretty neat. You can still find it at gamemastersrealm.com. Its one of the few good bbs's that's still around. Perhaps I'll give it another go at some point, the martial arts classes were entertaining with their combos and the like. But it should be interesting to see the non-roleplay alternative that iron realms comes up with once their next two games are finished as well. -- From: "Dakotah Rickard" Sent: Friday, January 16, 2009 11:10 PM To: "Gamers Discussion list" Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Iron Realms Stuff There's an old, old game for grinding that I thought was pretty good. Usurper. I have a copy of it, but I don't know how to host it. As for Iron Realms, if you have an out of character question, TELL one of the fate guides. That word, TELL, is in all caps, by the way, to denote a command. Tell Fate-Guide message. Remove fate-guide and insert name. Correct spelling is a must, however. This also works with other people. It's private communication, and fate guides are used to that sort of question. There are a lot of commands, and I'm not surprised that they're eluding you. THey're eluding me, and I feel pretty devoted. As I said in my original post, Iron Realms seems to be about the players and their requests. I personally can't wait to see what IR has for a scifi game. It'll be awesome and I'll probably stay on that one than I had more of the others because scifi is more of my thing. I must say, though, that I might try Lasternia again, since it was the game I had the most success on the first time playing. On Jan 13, 2009, at 7:19 PM, William L. If the IR crew wants to put up a new game for more hack and slash players --and I'm not knocking that, everyone has fun in a different way--that would be great, but for one I'd hate to see the existing games converted into that sort of thing. --Bill - Original Message - From: "Orin" To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Tuesday, January 13, 2009 3:22 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Iron Realms Stuff Yeah, me too. [Audyssey] Tekken 3 accessibility and console fighting games in general
Hi list, I just got a PSX and even an PS2 emulator to work and now willhopefully be finally able to enjoy some of those old good games again. The very first PS game I ever got to know and that I still have is Tekken 3. So I was wondering whether anyone has ever written something like a guide for the blind, describing the layout of the menus or the character selection screen, but especially the various attacks of all the characters. This is what matters to me the most so that I could really learn and master the fighting techniques of the characters, and not just randomly smash buttons. I was perhaps thinking about a blind user's guide or something like that. I got this idea when I saw Yohandy's MK combo challenges, although I doubt there would be something as complex for Tekken 3. I would gladly create it myself, if only I knew where to search for material of this kind. I was also wondering about other console fighting games, as I found a great place that provides gaming console emulators: www.emulator-zone.com. What seems to me to have been talked about the most here recently is the STreet Fighter series. I don't know anything at all about these games, just that they exist, so could anyone please give me some light on them? Most importantly, what consoles they are available for. :-D Then I would also gratefully welcome some overall background information, some words about the fighting system used, and perhaps even something similar like I asked for for the Tekken. I know, I am perhaps too demanding, but I'd just like to get to know more about both familiar and unfamiliar realms when they suddenly became available to me. I am even willing, ready and eager to cooperate on a project like I am dreaming about if there is nothing like this currently available out there. Thanks a lot in advance for any answers to my peculiar questions, and take care, Lukas --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Tekken 3 accessibility and console fighting games in general
I am familiar with Tekken 3. I like it a lot. Some of the characters would be kind of hard for us to play, as they require things like press such and such a button as your character is standing after being knocked down, something which can not be easily controlled. Some of the easiest characters for us to play are Jin Kazama, Forrest Law, Paul Pheonix, Hwarrang, King, and Gun Jack. I don't remember exactly where these characters are found, but check out http://www.gamefaqs.com for useful guides to attacks. Look under Playstation then Tekken 3. That's where I got most of my information. If that doesn't help, let me know. I can maybe help you. See if you have what it takes to be the next King of Iron Fist. Re: [Audyssey] beta of mysteries of the ancients
Hi Will, Yes. Eventually I will be posting a public beta for Mysteries of the Ancients. However, I have not posted a demo, because it isn't ready for the public yet. Although the Alphas are becoming quite stable for the private testers I have just bbegan some extensive upgrades to the Genesis Engine itself which will require some serious rework on MOTA to make it compatible with the newer Genesis Engine. Obviously since the next Alpha will be using the newer Genesis Engine I want to make sure everything runs smoothly before releasing any kind of demo to the public. william lomas wrote: hi thomas will the beta of the new mysteries of the ancients game be available for the paid members of the game, before release at all? or any form of public beta? many thanks and look forward to mota will --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Hi, I personally don't agree with your point of views. Beta testers need to know alot about audiogames, and are competent enough to test it all, and have enough time to do it. (I am not saying you all are incompetent) Everyone can't be a beta tester, or else what is the point of it being a beta in the first place. Also, it's certainly not fun to give code with bugs in it to the public. I am sure any other person who has ever dealt with code, or released something to the public would feel the same way I do. I fully support Tom on what he's doing. Ultimately, it's up to the developer. Have to agree with ryan here. I was under the impression that it wasn't really up for vote. If the dev says its not ready to be released to the general public, which includes people who pre-ordered the game, then its probably not ready to be released. Odds are the game is in a barely playable stage, with plenty of bugs to be ironed out. I imagine the beta testers will be the people who pre-ordered the game, when the game is in a much more playable stage. I have to say I'm surprised games like entombed are available for general testing. In one sense it helps to have more testers so more bugs can be found, but in another sense it draws out a lot of people who are expecting a full game and don't realize its barely been started. Re: [Audyssey] beta of mysteries of the ancients
Well in Entombed's case, I'm new to the community so I thought a broader test phase would be better. It's true, there is a real danger in turning people off your game when they test it expecting a much more polished experience. I think it helps to only open the game to testers when it will exceed their expectations. That first impression is important. Just things I've learned to better apply to future projects. I'm glad you opened entombed up to general testing, I'm not sure how much longer I could have waited for it to come out *grins*. Even in its current stage it's a pretty good experience. Re: [Audyssey] beta of mysteries of the ancients
Hi Will, I certainly understand and respect your point of view, but there are other issues to consider here. First, right now Mysteries of the Ancients is currently alpha software not a beta. What that means in programmer lingo is a program functional for testing, but is known to have bugs and is not a complete program. Betas are more or less complete programs, but are known to have bugs. There is a big difference between an alpha and a beta. For example, Mysteries of the Ancients 0.4 alpha only has the first level complete. So even if you guys got it you would come to the end of level 1 and that would be it. no more levels. Of course I plan to add more in the coming days and weeks, but for now obviously the game is still lacking a large portion of the game. This is one reason it is only an alpha not a beta. Here is another case in point. Not too long ago one of the private testers tried saving a game. When the game didn't save his game he asked on the testers list why it wasn't working. I explained that while the Genesis3D engine has that feature it was currently disabled because I am currently rewriting or updating large portions of the engine itself. If you save a game and you try and load it using a newer version of the engine, like the one I am working on now, the saved game will get scrambled in the process. i don't want bug reports on something i already know needs to be fixed. Second, the Genesis3D Engine uses a different product key system than Montezuma's Revenge. That means bbefore everyone who paid for Montezuma's Revenge can upgrade to Mysteries of the Ancients I will have to generate a couple hundred keys, and process all of those orders. Given the amount of time I have had lately to devote to USA Games stuff it would take me a week to process all of those orders. Personally, I think I would be more productive just working on the game, trying to get a decent demo ready, than processing all 200 orders. Third, the Mysteries of the Ancients documentation is still incomplete. Yes, i know people can figure a lot out by playing around with it, but I believe before I release anything to the general public the documentation should be as complete as possible. By supplying good documentation with the demo i can cut down on the number of general questions people are likely to ask. Finally, Mysteries of the Ancients is currently undergoing some major changes. I am presently working on integrating a newer version of the Genesis3D engine into Mysteries of the Ancients 0.5. There are some extensive changes in the newer Genesis Engine such as SDL support instead of DirectX support. I've dropped support for DirectX in the newer Genesis engine not only to make it easier to go cross platform, but installing and setting up SDL is much much easier than installing and updating DirectX 9.0C. However, I've not yet done a lot of testing with the SDL based version of Genesis myself, and I have no idea exactly how Mysteries of the Ancients will perform until i do the upgrade. In a case like that it is better to do some testing with a small group rather than releasing a possibly unstable demo on the general public. If it turns out i need to downgrade to the previous release it is easier to work with 10 people rather than 150 people. Re: [Audyssey] beta of mysteries of the ancients
Hi Ron, Thanks. Yes, sometimes you have to trust the developer's judgment about some things like this. I discovered with Montezuma's Revenge there is a lot of good and bad things that can come out of releasing a test build too early to the entire public at large. Yes, I might be able to find a lot more testers, but all too often people just show up wanting to play a free game. I've also learned sometimes those possible testers show up with unrealistic expectations. Such as they see that you can save a game in the documentation, try it, and immediately send off a bug report when it doesn't happen. Although I am fully aware of the issue, and it won't get turned back on until the new Genesis Engine is integrated into MOTA. To put it another way, I have a general idea of when I am going to work on this or that part of the game. I have a schedule in my mind, an order I am doing things in, and it certainly wouldn't help me any if I have x number of gamers asking for this that or the other thing at this point in time. It makes little sense for me to turn on the save game feature right now since the new Genesis engine has some newer classes that aren't compatible with the older classes used in MOTA 0.4. For example, in the latest Genesis Engine I have split the player class into smaller more specific class types. The class Angela Carter uses in 0.5 is the Adventurer3D class which is designed for a more treasure hunting theme. However, previously in 0,.4 and earlier that was a part of the Player3D class. If you save a game in 0.4 and tried to load it in 0.5 it would blow up in your face. So it makes more sense not to let the testers or anyone else save a game until the conversion is complete and is fairly stable. Smile. Re: [Audyssey] beta of mysteries of the ancients
Hi, Well, the game is certainly playable, but there are many features currently disabled for one reason or another. As I said a couple times already 0.5 is going to be a pretty major upgrade from 0.4 so I am certainly not going to release 0.4 with such a major release on the way. Shadow Dragon wrote: Have to agree with ryan here. Not meant to be taken personally and not directed at anyone in particular but, there you have it. [Audyssey] being a beta tester - Re: beta of mysteries of the ancients
That's what a public beta will be for. A game manufacturer chooses who they know, or has hear of, that they feel will be a good beta tester based on several issues. Some of those issues are their ability to communicate clearly with no confusion of their meaning, their ability to communicate any problems they find with a beta by being able to tell others at what stage of the game a problem occurred and how they caused the problem to occur, their willingness to work with others to resolve an issue that comes up, their ability to come up with ideas on why a problem might have occurred and how to fix it based on their knowledge of computers, programming, and other factors. There are probably other factors that also come into play that I haven't mentioned as well. Sometimes, a developer does put notices out that he or she is looking for testers, while at other times, enough people have already worked on other projects with the developer and he or she wants them to test this game based on previous experiences as team members. It's the decision of the developer of any game as to how testers are chosen and who they will be. At times, some testers have to be replaced due to unfortunate circumstances, and then the developer must find replacements, but how they do so is up to them. The fact that they preordered a game might, or might not, weigh into the decision. Testing is fun, and it is a lot of time consuming work, and it takes dedication and education. Not everyone who plays a game can be a good tester. Even a public beta is not merely for playing. When it does come out, let's all give Tom all the constructive feedback we can, so that the game is as good as it can be, and so he can move on to his plans for the future of USA Games! Until that beta comes out, let's let the testers do their work in preparation. Tom? I'm behind you all the way! I hope the new engine and the betas go smoothly in all testing phases! --- If guns cause crime, pencils cause misspelled words. - Original Message - From: "william lomas" To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Saturday, January 17, 2009 1:10 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] beta of mysteries of the ancients hi this is great news but in another sense, cant the ones who already paid help test this product? true, i understand and so does everyone else, that all this mess came from james north, let's ot go over that again. but surely the ones who paid for it should be able to help play and test the new game, since they ordered a product 2 or more years ago, that they have not seen i am not starting a flame war or attacking somebody but no mails were even put out for private testers in the first place, and i have paid for a game which to be fair has had a lot of problems and we have all 100 percent supported you but at least the pre-orderers could help shape the game into a better product. for those who have not pre- ordered, it comes out when it comes out, but for those who have I feel that if we can help play the new version then we at least are getting value for mone On 17 Jan 2009, at 19:27, Thomas Ward wrote: Hi Will, Yes. thatk you tom, I see your points - Original Message - From: "Thomas Ward" To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Saturday, January 17, 2009 7:38 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] beta of mysteries of the ancients Hi Will, I certainly understand and respect your point of view, but there are other issues to consider here. Re: [Audyssey] being a beta tester
Hi Charles, Thanks for the support. It is certainly nice to have someone put it in perspective as you did. As for the updated Genesis Engine hopefully i won't encounter any serious problems. I have been using the SDL support in the updated Star Trek game and it works great both on Windows and Linux builds of the game. I'm certain I wouldn't have too much of a problem getting Star Trek Deadly Alliance to run on Mac OS X natively as well. I've learned quite a bit about building cross platform games, and eventually I would like to see the entire Genesis Engine go cross platform with games like MOTA. That will be sweet! Re: [Audyssey] beta of mysteries of the ancients
Hi Jason, My first two projects STFC and Montezuma's Revenge were open testing and I saw both the good and the bad in doing so. Like you said there is a lot more testers, but there is a lot of expectations and other baggage that comes with it as well. I hope I don't insult anyone by saying this, but not everyone is tester material. Some people aren't really use to working with programs that often crash, don't run properly, or even know if there system is missing some dependancy they need. I can recall a good number of cases where I had to tell people what the .NET Framework was, how to install it, and then explain to them the difference between Managed DirectX for .NET applications and the stock DirectX libraries that ships with their system. Most people were not even aware that Managed DirectX was a different component for DirectX, and doesn't ship with Windows by default. I'm not saying those people were stupid, but it did result in several basic problems with user error rather than actual bugs in the software that I had to sort out. Nothing is more frustrating trying to figure out if the error is a result of user error or as a result of screwed up code. With a smaller handpicked team it is easier to figure out who is on the same page and who is not quite up to speed yet. Jason Allen wrote: Well in Entombed's case, I'm new to the community so I thought a broader test phase would be better. It's true, there is a real danger in turning people off your game when they test it expecting a much more polished experience. I think it helps to only open the game to testers when it will exceed their expectations. That first impression is important. Just things I've learned to better apply to future projects. [Audyssey] Cross Platform Speech Support
Hi all, As most of you know I am currently updating MOTA 0.5 to use the new cross platform Genesis engine that uses open source game development APIs such as SDL rather than DirectX. However, I do need your input on something since there obviously is going to be a rather big difference in the way speech is handled with the new engine. In the current 0.4 release of MOTA the game gets DirectX and Sapi 5 support from the Windows specific engine. Since there is no Sapi 5 on Mac OS and Linux the newer Genesis engine uses wav files of pre-recorded speech to announce status messages, menus, etc rather than any OS specific TTS engine. There are several other game developers that do it this way like Draconis, GMA, and BSC so this isn't something new for accessible games. It is also just easier to do it this way when building a cross platform engine rather than trying to support Gnome-Speech, Apple Voices, and Sapi 5 with the same game engine. Which brings me to my question. I was going to have someone do the voice overs for the menus, status messages, for 0.5 but do to other commitments and scheduling our plans fell through. Re: [Audyssey] Cross Platform Speech Support
Hi Phil, Unfortunately no. DirectX and SDL are quite a bit different in lots of ways that would make it difficult to support DirectX and SDL at the same time. For example, take something simple like panning a sound to the left or right. DirectSound and SDL Mixer have two completely different methods of handling this. In DirectX DirectSound to pan a sound you merely need to pass the pan control a value from -1, max left, to 1, max right. It would look something like this. // Center the sound in the right speaker. sound.Pan = 5000; SDL Mixer doesn't do it that way. You pan sounds by controling the stereo channels independantly of each other. Each channel has a range of 0, silence, to 250, full volume. Anyway, to do what I did above using the SDL Audio support it would look like this. // Center the sound in the right speaker. channel.SetPanning(0, 125); Obviously, the two methods aren't remotely similar, and this is a fairly miner procedure all things considered. When we get into subjects like SDL Input vs DirectInput we are comparing apples and oranges. In my personal opinion SDL input support is much easier to work with than DirectX. Even though SDL Input doesn't yet support force feedback I rather like how they handle joysticks, game pads, and stearing wheels on the Windows side. It is much easier to work with than DirectInput by a long shot. To enable a joystick using SDL Input all I need to do is add the following lines to my engine. Events.JoystickAxisMotion += new EventHandler(this.JoystickAxisChanged); Events.JoystickButtonDown += new EventHandler(this.JoystickButtonDown); joystick = Joysticks.OpenJoystick(0); This is infinitely easier and less complicated than the way I would do it using DirectInput. With DirectInput to do the same thing it would look something like this. // Attempt to locate a compatible joystick/game pad. foreach (DeviceInstance instance in Manager.GetDevices(DeviceClass.GameControl, EnumDevicesFlags.AttachedOnly)) { // Grab the first game controller we find. joystick = new Microsoft.DirectX.DirectInput.Device(instance.InstanceGuid); // Exit the loop. break; } // If we found a joystick // proceed with initialization. if (joystick != null) { // Initialize joystick state object. stickstate = new JoystickState(); // Setup button state array. buttons = new bool[12]; // Set joystick data format. joystick.SetDataFormat(DeviceDataFormat.Joystick); // Set the cooperative level. joystick.SetCooperativeLevel(this, CooperativeLevelFlags. Background | CooperativeLevelFlags.NonExclusive); // Set the axis range. // Normally a range of 1 is standard // for most joystick and game pad devices. foreach (DeviceObjectInstance doi in joystick.Objects) { // If the joystick axis is not 0 // set it to 5000 units per stick direction. if ((doi.ObjectId & (int)DeviceObjectTypeFlags.Axis) != 0) { // Set axis range. joystick.Properties.SetRange(ParameterHow.ById, doi.ObjectId, new InputRange(-5000, 5000)); } } // Set joystick axis flag. joystick.Properties.AxisModeAbsolute = true; // Aquire the joystick for use. joystick.Acquire(); } // If initialization failed // set joystick to null // and continue with normal operation. else { joystick = null; } Smile. That is just a strait grab any joystick we see piece of code using DirectX. That doesn't have any special features like force feedback or some of the more advanced features of DirectInput. As you can see from a programming point of view DirectX is infinitely more complicated and not at all compatible with SDL. Part of the reason I made the switch is SDL is much much easier to learn, use, and it supports Mac OS and Linux as well as Windows. I think eventually switching to it will pay off as it has its own advantages/disadvantages here. It is Thomas's decision. Over and over people pushed him into doing things, heck if he had his way this would be a 3d game. Respect his decision. For the time being i am going to have to record all the messages using a TTS engine such as the AT&T Voices, Scansoft Voices, Cepstral Voices, etc. If you had a choice which of the following voices do you personally prefer?
