Re: [Audyssey] lone wolf assistance

2009-03-30 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Dark,
Mission 4 doesn't have an aircraft carrier in it. Mission 4 is the
mission where you have to destroy the three troup transports that are
picking up troups from the island in sector e2. The three destroyers
guarding the area are tricky guys, but I can get all three of them most
of the time even on the highest difficulty level. It comes down to
timing and practice.

Smile.

I can't really name a favorite. Right now I have been playing mostly Mach 1

And I do often play some of my little games like Master Mind, Spanker etc when

[Audyssey] Games We'd like to Play.

2009-03-30 Thread Phil Vlasak

Games We'd like to Play.
by Phil Vlasak.
Beware the Grue!
Hearing about this group for years, its existence finally peeked its nose
from beneath the rock where it was biding its time to strike.
The GREW, or Game Researchers of Unrelenting Excellence, was formed to do
away with and discourage those not worthy to play games.
Their Chairman of the Bored, code name Dark, led his minions to unrelenting
messing up the heads of fledgling game enthusiasts.
From suggesting dial up users to download games so large they would tie
their computers up for days, to sending neophyte game players on wild goose
chases after non-existing game sites, the GRUE kept up an unrelenting
pressure to make game play fit only for those worthy to leap over their
obstacles.

Their time to strike came when Dark released a Beware the Grue! game.
It was truly a game to Beware, as the download was one gigabyte, it had 500
different creatures attacking you, and all you had to defend yourself with,
was a rusty pen knife and a beer can opener.

And to discourage all but the most faithful of game players, the game was
voiced entirely by Microsoft Sam.

Oh btw, you might want to check the entry on audiogames.net, sinse the game

I might write a step by step solution for those who want it sent to them off
list if there is a lot of interest. Or, if someone knows of a JAWS friendly
very low cost program that I can use to record both the game sounds and
myself using a mike, I could make an audio walk through. I used to have
such an animal, but don't have it anymore because it was on a hard drive
that crashed and was unrecoverable, and I don't remember what the name of
the program was or where I got it from. If someone would let me know of
such a program, I'd appreciate it, and if you would be interested in the
mission 1 solution, also let me know? Thanks.

Jumped over to mission 8 which includes the aircraft carrier and two
fighter jets and two destroyers. Knocked out the two destroyers and
sent the aircraft carrier sinking after pumping maybe 10 torpitos into
it. I am not sure if I won though as I don't know if you have to take
out the fighter support too. At the end it seemed to end and ask me if
I wanted another mission so, I am assuming I did not win. Do you know

Beware the Grue!
Hearing about this group for years, its existence finally peeked its nose
from beneath the rock where it was biding its time to strike.
The GREW, or Game Researchers of Unrelenting Excellence, was formed to do
away with and discourage those not worthy to play games.
Their Chairman of the Bored, code name Dark, led his minions to
unrelenting messing up the heads of fledgling game enthusiasts.

From suggesting dial up users to download games so large they would tie
their computers up for days, to sending neophyte game players on wild
goose chases after non-existing game sites, the GRUE kept up an
unrelenting pressure to make game play fit only for those worthy to leap
over their obstacles.

Their time to strike came when Dark released a Beware the Grue! game.
It was truly a game to Beware, as the download was one gigabyte, it had
500 different creatures attacking you, and all you had to defend yourself
with, was a rusty pen knife and a beer can opener.

And to discourage all but the most faithful of game players, the game was
voiced entirely by Microsoft Sam.

Hi.

I've stuck the file on sendspace, at http://www.sendspace.com/file/wljold
but obviously this isn't a perminant home for it. I do hope you have fun
with the game though.

Oh btw, you might want to check the entry on audiogames.net, sinse the
game installer is in chinese. You can pretty much get through everything
by pressing alt N, but if you want instructions there are some there.

Greetings list.

I'm curious as to whether anyone can make the installation file for the
Night of Parasite game available for download somewhere, somehow? The
original location for downloading said file has been inactive for quite a
while now, and I'm rather curious to attempt it.

Re: [Audyssey] Games We'd like to Play.

2009-03-30 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Dragon,
A beer can opener was used to open beer cans before there were pop tops.
It was a metal tool about three forths of an inch wide and about four inches
long and had a curved pointed end and a little curved piece that fit under
the beer can top edge.
The little piece was used as a hinge for the pointed end to pierce the top
of the beer can and make a triangle shaped hole in it.
I would sometimes make a hole on the other side of the top to let the air in
the can.

Many thanks.

Hi Michael.

I must confess I'm in the same position. I beat the first two missions
of the game a couple of years ago, was really pleased with myself and
got as far as mission 4, though targiting those circling destroyers
was a right pain, and I couldn't get the one going at 30 nots at all!

In the end I completed mission 4 by a very symple process, lowering my
sub to below detection range, lining myself up in position to take out
an aircraft carrier, then popping up, unloading torpedos like nobody's
business, then popping down again!

This was a slow process, but I was eventually victorious!

Right now though, even mission 1 is giving me trouble!

Beware the Grue!

Hi Dragon,
A beer can opener was used to open beer cans before there were pop tops.
It was a metal tool about three forths of an inch wide and about four
inches long and had a curved pointed end and a little curved piece that
fit under the beer can top edge.
The little piece was used as a hinge for the pointed end to pierce the
top of the beer can and make a triangle shaped hole in it.
I would sometimes make a hole on the other side of the top to let the air
in the can.

Re: [Audyssey] manuals - Re: I give!!!!

2009-03-30 Thread Darren Harris
Hi,

You said:

the
Manuals are written by people who know what they're talking about for
those that
don't. Think writing one is easy? Give it a try. In your spare time,
write the user's manual for something you have in your house, such as a
home
stereo, CD player, or even, yes, a computer game. Don't leave anything
out,
but make your manual understandable by someone who does not know the
device
or product you are talking about. Be patient with the user and go
slowly in
describing. Here's one for you, write a user's manual for a cell phone
that
can guide a blind person through it's operations easily and in a way
that
will not confuse them? I dare you. If you try this, you'll be able to
see
the problem from both sides of the issue. Remember, the reader does not

know anything about what you're trying to teach them how to use.

I did. I'm talking from experience. I spent 3 months re-writing the jaws
4 manual. Because the guy who I was teaching to use it actually couldn't
get to grips with it. So I rerote it and went so far back to basics it
would bore the likes of you and me but for someone like him it was
necessary. I didn't do it alone. Assisting me I had people who new about
the programme, people that taught others how to use it, people who have
herd of it but have never seen it or used it. It's foolish to believe
that even though I'm the one writing the manual, that I'm going to have
a 100% perspective as to what needed to be done. Thus I chose to do it
in the way that I did. I was doing all the work, I was sending them via
email all their submissions and based on their feedback I would make
changes. Or explain why I had written a given thing and accept or reject
any advice they gave me. So I'm sorry Charles but yes I will say that a
lot of problems that people have, is because of the way that the manuals
are written. It's very difficult to go right back to basics and not many
people see the benefits of that. The vast majority of manuals I look at
now I'm so critical of them you honestly wouldn't believe it. Some of
them I can honestly say have left me cringing. Because if the manual is
thus badly written what does that say for the product itself? All that
time and energy gone into developing that product for it to be let down
by it's user documentation. The long and the short of it is, it's all
well making sure that your product works, but if you aren't going to
spend the time required on the nuts and bolts as in the user
documentation, then you may as well not bother at all.

If people cannot just pick up and get to grips with something, then a
lot of the time they will just put it down again. Because half the
problem there is a psycological one. Oh it's me that is stupid I can't
understand this bla bla bla. This is where a lot of your fobias actualy
come from. And the tech support lines are loving it because you're
calling them, being charge a stupendus amount for the privelage just to
solve a problem that could have been easily solved in most cases if the
manual was written in a way that it was understood by who ever read it
no matter from what background.

You said:
User's manuals are often blamed for some of the problems that people are

having. Then again, it is found that people often don't read them.

This is in part true. But also it is true to say that considering how in
the majority of cases, manuals are written in such a poor fassion,
people just don't seem to waste their time on them any more. Just how
much is released these days that is just so full of bugs and stupid
stuff like that? Not enough time is spent on development of a product
and the user documentation is just as much a pert of that development.
The quality of work in many ways has slowly and surely gone down hill
over the last few years in general.

Hi all.

Are there any different sound packs for loan wolf from the original out
there?

I am also interested in the old slipgate legacy sound pack which had 6
songs included with it.

Finally if anyone knows where I can get some starwars sound effects would
be grateful.

My friend wants to build a soundpack for Fate of the Republic starwars

twelve-gauge to blow centaurs and harpies away. Kept finding
shotgun ammo and healing potions everywhere, it was the
  luckiest
thing ever. It took me a few tries to get to the end. Tom,
  what
is that thing at the end of the level that you have to kill? It
took me a few times before I learned to duck and shoot at the

  the
roar of the shotgun as it blasts away some giant beastie.

well I never knew there were such things before.
ok bottle openers with pop tops that you still need an opener to pop the top as
its sharp are comanplace but I can't imagine there being not that way.
Cans.
Hmm once I read a story about a shipwreck where they got food and bottled drink
but no opener.
It was the only one though.
I can't imagine cans with no pop tabs or bottles with tin lids.

The other end of the tool was used to pry bottle caps off. That was before
the screw-on caps came along. Nondomestic beer is still bottled in such
bottles, sometimes.

Ah, so similar to a bottle opener, only it made holes in cans instead of
popping the lids off bottles and had a sharp end. *grin* Thanks for the
info. Sounds like the perfect weapon for dealing with beer golems.

Hi Dragon,
A beer can opener was used to open beer cans before there were pop tops.
It was a metal tool about three forths of an inch wide and about four
inches long and had a curved pointed end and a little curved piece that
fit under the beer can top edge.
The little piece was used as a hinge for the pointed end to pierce the top
of the beer can and make a triangle shaped hole in it.
I would sometimes make a hole on the other side of the top to let the air
in the can.

Hearing about this group for years, its existence finally peeked its nose
from beneath the rock where it was biding its time to strike.
The GREW, or Game Researchers of Unrelenting Excellence, was formed to do

Their Chairman of the Bored, code name Dark, led his minions to
unrelenting messing up the heads of fledgling game enthusiasts.
From suggesting dial up users to download games so large they would

Their time to strike came when Dark released a Beware the Grue! game.
It was truly a game to Beware, as the download was one gigabyte, it had

Hey folks, it's not so hard, I am able to win the game almost every time
I play on expert level. You can kill the cyclop with every of your weapons,
of course, arrows and the shotgun are most effective. Ok, you can also use
the machine gun, but you need more amo. If you have enough bullets for the
pistol you can emty the pistol on him, of course ducking while fighting and
then standing up and ducking again, then jump back, take some potion, and
then even jump at him with the combat knife and finish him off.

Re: [Audyssey] manuals - Re: I give!!!!

2009-03-30 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Charles,
Well, yes and no. I've certainly seen my share of good manuals, but I've
also seen my share of confusing, complicated, or down right poorly
written manuals as well. The problem for anyone writing a manual is how
much to say in the manual, what needs to be said, and how much can
safely assumed the end user knows.
For example, some of the most difficult manuals I have had to read is
programming API reference documentation. These are not step by step
guides, but a set of documents explaining every function, library, etc
contained in the technology. They have sample programs, but they don't
always get into a lot of detail how this or that works, and assume you
are fairly familiar with the programming language and various concepts
being discussed. That is why it can be very difficult for a new
programmer to learn how to be an effective programmer. The documentation
and often the sample source is written for a skilled or advanced
programmer, and a beginner finds him or herself out of their depth.
Take DirectX for a moment. That is a fairly complex, highly advanced,
technology for Windows. Never-the-less the documentation that ships with
the 9.0C SDK is written at a fairly advanced level, and takes a lot for
granted.

A. You are a skilled C++ developer.
B. You understand key Win32 API concepts.
C. You own and know how to use Visual C++.
D.You will understand the code samples included in the documentation.
E. There are other sources for A, B, C so no need to repete previously
written documentation.

As I said this takes a lot for granted, and assumes the end reader is a
fairly advanced programmer to start with. if someone fresh out of
college takes a look at some of the code exampls, the documentation, etc
as I did a few years back when starting to write games he or she can get
lost, confused, etc very quickly. In the end the only way I managed to
make heads or tails out of DirectX was by purchasing some beginner books
on the topic which explained the technology in down to earth language
that I could digest and understand. Once I understood the key/core
concepts then i could go in and read those API reference manuals and
have a clue what I was looking for and what exactly Microsoft was trying
to tell me.
At any rate writing documentation for a game is not as complicated, but
the point is the same. What should a developer say or not say when
writing that user's manual?
When I write a guide for say, Mysteries of the Ancients, I need to
cover the entire product. However, I assume the end user has some
knowledge of basic computer skills such as how to use his/her screen
reader, that they know how to download files from the internet, they
know how to locate downloaded files on their computer, and they know how
to access icons from their start menu on there own. I suppose to a brand
new blind computer user that is a lot of assumptions, that I am asking
for skills currently out of his/her experience, but then again I'm not
there to train them how to use a computer. I'm there to document my
product and how to use it. Usually this is fine for the average
customer, but now and then there will be someone totally clueless how to
do the most basic computer skills, and then the manual will get blamed
for leaving something important out. At least something they felt was
important or would have been helpful to them.
On the other hand putting too much information in a manual can be just
as bbad. It may help a totally new user of a product get started using
the product, but will be quite tedious to someone more experienced.
There is such a thing as too much information, and the end result is a
very long, boaring, and tedious read. Most software companies assume you
have some basic skills with the computer such as downloading programs,
knowing where you downloaded the file to, how to use your screen reader,
bla. The companies assume if you don't know those things then read some
basic computer manuals before returning to their product. Honestly I
can't blame them, because it costs time and money to document basic
skills the end user should already possess at the time of purchase,
download, whatever.

Charles Rivard wrote:
User's manuals are often blamed for some of the problems that people are
having. Then again, it is found that people often don't read them.
Manuals are written by people who know what they're talking about for
those that don't. Think writing one is easy? Give it a try. In your
spare time, write the user's manual for something you have in your
house, such as a home stereo, CD player, or even, yes, a computer game.
Don't leave anything out, but make your manual understandable by someone
who does not know the device or product you are talking about. Be
patient with the user and go slowly in describing. Here's one for you,
write a user's manual for a cell phone that can guide a blind person
through it's operations easily and in a way

In fact, when USA Games went down a couple of weeks ago do to a complete

2009-03-30 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi,
You can use any weapon you want to fight the Cyclops. However, some
weapons are more effective than others. A shotgun blast is obviously
more powerful than a pistol shot. Enchanted weapons like swords and
arrows do more damage because they are magical.

Hi,
Well, in beta 4 I've moved that particular key. It is now in the center

you can use it.
As for the Harpies yes it is possible to duck their lightning attacks,
but they will sometimes still hit you at some times. Just depends on how
good their aim is.

[Audyssey] list move successful and a huge thanks

2009-03-30 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hello everyone. It looks like the move was successful. Since around 5 pm
this afternoon Eastern daylight savings time, the list has been
operating from the new web host. I'd like to take the time now to thank
3 very special list members who have contributed to the list. It's
because of these 3 members that the list hosting and audyssey.org domain
registration has been paid for to last an additional year.

I will not mention their names because I know of at least one who wanted
to remain anonymous. However if anyone wants to speak up, feel free as I
know who you are *smile*.

Many thanks to all, and happy gaming.

2009-03-30 Thread Charles Rivard
Thank you annonymusses. Or is that annonymi? Hmm. Screen readers will
screw up at least one of those, and if I see my own Email in my inbox, I
know that I can send messages to the list after the change has been made.
What a sneaky way to send a test message, isn't it?

[Audyssey] Mud Sound Packs

2009-03-30 Thread Kai

Greetings, Nick.

Developing a sound pack for a mud is highly dependant on your client's own
abilities. Most clients allow you to add a trigger and attach a sound file
to said trigger (GMUD32), while more sophisticated clients will allow you to
script responses to a trigger, and thus provide conditional sounds,
depending on what the trigger sends to the script (ZMUD). Still other
clients allow you to use a more thorough trigger matching scheme, thereby
ensuring that you are indeed matching the correct text, rather than a faked
message from a player (MUSHClient).

Most of these clients employ some form of a scripting language, though you
may not need to learn it to make simple sound triggers. If you, however,
want to make a trigger that is a bit more complex, that takes into
consideration what's actually happening and adjust the sounds accordingly,
then some scripting and knowledge of Regular Expressions may be in order
(although the latter could be voluntary).

You'll want to read up on VBScript, Javascript, and a few other scripting
languages if you want to enhance your triggers, and most of the tutorials
and guides to these can be found via Google, the W3 Schools site, or Dev
Guru.

Regular Expressions are explained at:
http://www.regular-expressions.info/
