probably true kay, I've actually never invested or needed high
performance tools.

What I have is quite poor but it does what I need which is not that much.
My brother has a 64 bit system but 32 bit software.
he plans to get 64 bit software, stuff runs quite fast on it, though
I am not sure what his real attraction is to be honest, his speech
dragon system takes a lot of power and he does do some enginering
stuff so he probably needs it.
Going back to topic, could games take advantage of 64 bit systems and
what advantages could they really do.
most stuff is still using legacy languages, some even use directx 7
and lower still.

well I don't see any reason why us blinks need 64 bit.
what I understand is that programs can only use the first gb of
ram, so 1 gb per program.

in 64bit, you can use 4gb per program. or more.
Unless you do image design or something you don't need that much.
Sertainly for us blinks we don't even use 4gb ram.
on my xp system I am using about 440mb about with all the extra
halfmb blocks maybe 450-460mb.
cutting about a good 80 for readers, and the mail program I am
using round 320 -380mb.
And thats everything i have, granted my version of hal is old but
you get the idea.

there is no way we will ever use 1gb of ram per program.
Performance may improve with a 64bit os but we probably don't need it.
Only people that need it are probably engineers that need to run
multipul calculations like my brother, software developers, graphic
designers and audio designers that need loads loaded at once and
hardcore gamers.

General users don't need this.
In fact general users don't need win7 at alll, but thats the way

That's actually an over simplification of the facts. Most people

With a 32-bit file system you can not easily create or map a file that
is larger than 4 GB of size. This includes a wav file, avi file, mpg
vidio clip, etc. As a result with newer technologies like blue ray it
is becoming more and more difficult to map a 50 GB high definition
video file to a 32-bit file system and/or play it with a 32-bit
processor. In order to play huge files like this you really need a
64-bit processor, operating system, and file system. As multimedia
formats get larger and larger in order to compress high definition
video, high-fi audio, etc the more necessary it is to have and use
64-bit systems. This effects everyone in some way. Especially, since
standard dvd movies are on the way out and blue ray dvds are quickly
beginning to be more mainstream.

Hi Kai,

Yes, I do. My first computer was an Apple A2-E, and as funny as it
sounds now the entire OS, Apple Works, was run from a 720 KB floppy.
As I recall you stuck the floppy in, booted up, entered the date,
pressed enter, flipped the floppy over, hit enter and the Apple Works
command prompt started up. Newer versions actually had a text menu
instead of a command prompt. What a joke, eh?

Re: [Audyssey] if it ain't broke, don't fix it - Re: Sticks version game pads.

2011-01-12 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Charles,

Well, that’s certainly one way of looking at it. There is even a term
for it. It is called "perceived obsolescence." The basic idea of this
marketing strategy is to take a product you have, repackage it, change
the look or feel a little bit, and attempt to market it as a new
product even though it is the same old product in new packaging. So,
yeah, they are trying to rip you off if they can, or at the very least
trying to make their product look newer and more attractive to their
customers.

For example, the biggest target market for this type of marketing is
children. Toy manufacturers know if they change a popular toy just a
little and sell it again kids will want it even if it is similar to
the toy they have. This month they might have Night Strike Batman with
some sort of night vision goggles or something, and next month they
will come out with Ninja Attack batman with a couple of swords. The
figure in the box is the same action figure but the equipment included
is a little different and the packaging he is in is different, but
kids don’t know or particularly care about that. They see the new
Batman figure and want it, because his old toy is not as cool as the
new one etc. Believe me my son is bad about wanting the same figure
again and again just because the action figure inside is a tad
newer/different than the one he has.

The thing is every large company does this at some level, and I do
understand why they do it. If you are in the business of selling cars
you aren't going to completely invent a new car every year. Instead
you might come up with some newer paint schemes on the 2011 model, or
might change the look of the body a bit, throw in a feature from the
limited model in the standard model, etc but you aren't going to
redesign that entire car from scratch. That costs a lot of time and
money in research and development. So they get by for another year or
two on the same basic model, but make it a little more attractive
looking than last years model, and throw in a few extras like power
seats as a bonus.

Well, software developers aren't that much different. Some want to
make a few new sales, reach that bottom line, and if they can tinker
with the UI a little, fix a couple of bugs, and resell it as 2.0
they'll do it just to make a few bucks. That's why upgrading from say
Office 2007 to Office 2010 really isn't any big deal. I don't see a
single thing 2010 has I don't already have with 2007 in terms of my
personal needs so won't buy it on those grounds.

Cheers!

Hi Kai,

Definitely. Not only that as I said earlier the issue just isn't
related to memory as some people believe. There is a serious issue for
programmers when we have to support/map extremely large files to the
file system. Now days with blue ray, high definition digital camras,
etc it is becoming more and more common for the average Joe and Jane
to have some extremely huge files containing music, videos, whatever.
The old 32-bit file systems of the 32-bit Windows era just can't cope
with those kind of files in memory or saving them to the file system.
Plus I'm a musician/composer and believe me when I say that working
with the higher end sound production software 64-bit systems would
definitely come in handy.

Hi Charles,

Because this is Microsoft we are talking about. Changing the user
interface every version or two for the sake of changing it seams to be
Microsoft's reason for everything. Why there isn't a "Game
Controllers" option under Windows 7 when there clearly was one under
Vista is probably just as good a question as why did they yank out all
the pull down menus in office and replace them with the menu ribbons.
Microsoft has no good reason for it other than that's the kind of
illogical crap Microsoft does and calls it progress. If they had a
motto it would be "if it ain't broke change it anyway."

Hi Charles,

I don't know. Maybe the Microsoft developers are mad as a hatter,
crazier than a bed bug, or outright loons. Grin.

Actually, there is a reason but it doesn't make sense to the common
user from a practical standpoint. Essentially, from a business
perspective one way to resell a software product and keep that product
going is to convince their target market that the product they have is
out dated, obsolete, and the new product is somehow infurior even if
there really isn't anything new for sale. One way to do that is to
perform an inexpensive upgrade on the software like removing classic
menus and replacing them with menu ribbons, add some flashier
graphics, and a newer and sexier interface that just looks new. Of

in practical terms it isn't worth throwing away the computer you

of non-essential changes in Jaws 12, but I frankly don't think it is
worth an upgrade so I have no plans to renew my SMA at this time. In
fact, some of the changes they did with the config manager etc I don't

pull this kind of stuff all of the time.

Hi Thomas,
I notice that switching to Neospeech from other voices does take quite a

I think about 30 seconds so if you put a wait statement in for that long,

Hi Jim,

I know. I do the same thing to reset the Speech Engine before
switching to Neospeech, Natural Voices, whatever. Problem is though
the Neospeech voices continue to sound fuzzy, distorted, etc even
though I properly disposed of the old Sapi speech engine and
initialized the new one. I don't have this problem when switching from
the AT&T voices to Microsoft Anna or to the Realspeak voices that
ships with Jaws 9. This leads me to believe that the Neospeech voices
have some problems not shared by other TTS engines out there.

So I do the below code whenever changing to a new voice. nov being the
number of the new voice.

Set Voice = Nothing
Set Voice = New SpVoice
Set Voice.Voice = Voice.GetVoices().Item(nov)

So that is just in VB6 with the sapi5 voices.

Blinks? ...

Blind individuals may also be involved in creative projects which require
resource-intensive programs, such as Sonar which may load soft synths, sound
fonts, and a multitude of other memory-consuming components.

There definitely is a good reason to have the high memory, assuming your
needs call for it. If you simply edit word documents, do some spreadsheets,
edit a few PowerPoint presentations, check email, and the other usual
activities such as browsing the internet, then four or more GB of RAM and a
3.6 GHZ Dual/quad core system might just be overkill. But if you're doing
something intensive like the examples sited above, such specifications might
just be the difference between getting a project done this week, rather than
next week, when the due-date will have passed.

Re: [Audyssey] Sticks version game pads.

2011-01-12 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Shaun,

That's actually an over simplification of the facts. Most people
assume it has to do with 4 gb of ram, but that isn't the problem at
all.

Cheers!

Of
course, there might not really be anything new or revolutionary about
the product itself, but the new look and feel might convince people

Hi Ron,

That is always possible. I've also thought of something else that
might be to blame too. If I remember correctly I installed and
configured the Philips 2909 back when I was running Vista so when I
updated to Windows 7 all of my settings, drivers, etc were pretty much
kept in tact. That also explains why I thought it was located under
"Game Controllers" but when I couldn't find it under Windows 7 I had
to look under "Devices and Printers" to get the same settings dialog
box. Just a simple case of getting Vista's control panel and Win 7's
control panel a tad bit confused.

Re: [Audyssey] Sticks version game pads.

2011-01-12 Thread Thomas Ward

[Audyssey] if it ain't broke, don't fix it - Re: Sticks version game pads.

2011-01-12 Thread Charles Rivard
As for finding settings, why do they keep getting moved into different
locations? Why can't they just leave well enough alone? If they were
logically located in previous versions of Windows, leave them there. The
same goes for the desktop and the menu system. In Microsoft Office, the
pulldown menus were just fine, and they were pretty much straightforward.
Then they had to go and incorporate a stupid ribbon system that drives
people crazy, especially those of us who cannot see. I know some sighted
people who feel as I do, so it's not just the visually impaired or blind
people who think this.

Both of those were released before Windows 7 came out. I happen to be
running Windows 7 32-bit and the drivers seam to work just peachy. So
it could be an issue of 32-bit vs 64-bit or you guys just aren't

Science Fiction gamebook for iOS

Hi all,

I contacted the developer of this game. The core of the game is accessible,
the story. However, the story requires you to hack into terminals, help
people with networking, etc, as the main character you're Well rounded with
combat but you primarily perform hacking operations.

The hacking and combat battles come in the form of visual minigames that,
depending on how played, effect the outcome of the battle. Possible outcomes
either you could probably die, get injured, get critically injured, etc.

Since i paid $2.99 for this app, I was slightly disappointed that the
battles weren't playable, as that's what makes up most of the game, besides
telling a sweet story in the process.

Right now, all we can do is read the introduction and start what I think is
a tutorial. The problem? You have to hack the security of a Tank, where it
becomes unplayable. Was surprised to get a response back. Took a few days,
but here it is.

P.S. Anyone know how to contact EA Mobile? They've got two totally text
based games at least that's what I read in reviews, yet VoiceOver is
completely inaccessible with them. These inparticular would be nice to
become accessible due to weekly content and or story updates.

something that we unfortunately failed to consider while designing the hack
mini games. Our sincere apologies. In fact, we have been contacted by a few
other VO users too regarding this exact same issue. So, we're discussing
this internally to see what's the best way we can implement this for VO
users. We're just a 2 man team, so we don't have the kind of resources that
the bigger companies do. But, we'll research this more and come back to you
soon.

using VoiceOver it was difficult to get through the first two intro screens
or so, but I figured it out eventually. The part where I get stuck though is
when I have to help an engineer with a Tank. When I jack in, I see a screen
that says security threat detected or something like that, with something
that says chip timer sequence and medium. When I double-tap either one of
those, the VoiceOver gesture for click, nothing happens.

few more tracks. And I hope you guys can somehow make this accessible so my
money would be well spent and I can continue the game.

I'm thinking of coding a simple game, called dtmf guess. Basically,
you have 60 seconds to guess as many dtmf tones as you can, and then
there will be score boards and stats.
I might possily include other modes, for example musical notes.

Re: [Audyssey] BGT future development

2011-01-12 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Muhammed,

I explained it in an earlier post. Don't you read your e-mail?

Essentially, what I was refering to is some game consoles and PC games
have special game controllers in the form of a boxing glove used for
boxing games. I haven't seen them around for quite a while, but I do
know they did exist at one time. I can remember a couple of years back
seeing a set for the PC with force feedback support that would
simulate the feel of punching an aponent when you hit them. Obviously,
this type of game controller would only be useful in a hand to hand
fighting game such as boxing and not good for much else.

Cheers!

Hi all
I find chane link a very interesting but challenging game.
I often cannot complete a chane as quite a number of words are unfamiliar
to
me so I have to often ask all the letters of a word from the game so
that
I only have to get the last letter in a word Probably because I do not
live

in the united states .I just now got a very strange chane.
Especially the first two words was very strange to me.
The first word in the chane is zucchini.
I did a google search and there I read that zucchini is a type of squash.
So the second word had 4 stars meaning 4 letters.
So I tried to think what in the line of squash and pumpkin can have 4
letters? Because pumpkin is related to squash.
After thinking for a while I couldn't get to a 4 letter word relating to
zucchini. So I activated the button for take letter below zucchini until I
have only the last letter to guess.
And the word was bread.
Can anybody please tell me what is the relation between zucchini and
bread?

The rest of the words in the chane was easier.
Below bread was money, then bank, then safe, then lock then hair.
But I am very puzzled about those first 2 words in the chane.
Happy gaming.

Hi,

FYI. Racing wheels are supported through the same API as joysticks,
game pads, boxing gloves, etc. The DirectInput joystick API is fairly
universal in supporting a variety of game devices through the joystick
device code. So in general if BGT supported joysticks generically
through DirectInput it would support just about everything from a
flight stick to a racing wheel. It would be up to the end BGT game
developer to specialize the code for the target device such as
creating custom device profiles.

Hi Muhammed,

No. I simply mean pressing the enter key to create a manual line break
when starting a new statement or if a statement is too long to fit on
a single line. For example, some compound if statements are way too
long to fit on a single line of code so I press the enter key to make
a manual line break after the && or || operators, indent the next line
of code properly, and continue with the statement. It makes it both
more readable and it won't scroll off the screen formatted that way.
However, if you are going to break a statement between a line you need
to know where you can break it and how to properly format it. That's a
bit too advanced for you at this moment. As for using double spacing
you only really need to do that between major code blocks like between
functions. I think Philip really needs to do a tutorial on proper
code formatting.

First of all, I thank those who've been trying to help me out with my
problems configuring my Philips 2909 so that the force feedback feature
will work.

I finally found where the joy stick is at.
Man does Bill Gates have it hidden well. SMILES.
I ended up doing a search for set up joy stick configuration and finally
found it.
When I did a search for just joy and or joystick, it would take me to the
bsc game joy stick configuration, and that's not what I wanted.
Well, I even went back to defaults and ok everything and tested out tdv
with the controller and still after going through everything and even
going through everything with vision I still couldn't get the force
feedback to kick in and I still ended up with the same message when I
attempted to fire up tdv.

So it is a weird mystery to attempt to figure out for now.

Hi Ron,

Its been a while since I tried to configure the force feedback stuff
under Windows 7, but I can tell you it has nothing to do with the
device manager. There is a link in the control panel for joysticks I
think it is called "game controllers" or something like that. You
click on that and it brings up a Windows dialog with joysticks and
other game controllers connected to your PC. You select the device you
want to customize, click on Properties, and under there is a check box
to enable/disable force feedback support for that device. If this
isn't enough help let me know and I'll try and squeeze in some time to
write up a walkthrough on the process.

Hi,

Yeah, I really like Ultraedit. One of its features I love is it can
read and save both Dos text and Unix formatted text files. This makes
porting code too and from Linux a snap.

Re: [Audyssey] BGT problem!

2011-01-12 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Muhammed,

[Audyssey] Hopeful news on the future accessibility of Star Breed, a Science Fiction gamebook for iOS

2011-01-12 Thread Orin
Hi all,

I contacted the developer of this game. The core of the game is accessible, the
story. However, the story requires you to hack into terminals, help people with
networking, etc, as the main character you're Well rounded with combat but you
primarily perform hacking operations.

The hacking and combat battles come in the form of visual minigames that,
depending on how played, effect the outcome of the battle. Possible outcomes
either you could probably die, get injured, get critically injured, etc.

Since i paid $2.99 for this app, I was slightly disappointed that the battles
weren't playable, as that's what makes up most of the game, besides telling a
sweet story in the process.

Right now, all we can do is read the introduction and start what I think is a
tutorial. The problem? You have to hack the security of a Tank, where it
becomes unplayable. Was surprised to get a response back. Took a few days, but
here it is.

P.S. Anyone know how to contact EA Mobile? They've got two totally text based
games at least that's what I read in reviews, yet VoiceOver is completely
inaccessible with them. These inparticular would be nice to become accessible
due to weekly content and or story updates.

Re: [Audyssey] thinking of coding a game dtmf guess

2011-01-12 Thread peter Mahach

hi nicol,
dtmf stands for something like dual tone modulating frequencies or something
like that. Ok, ever dialed a phone? did you hear those little beeps? Those
are dtmf's. That are used by switching Equipment to see what number you
dialed. They're also used by voicemale's to know what number you pressed so
that you can navigate the menus. Each key has its own sound.

Hi,
I'm thinking of coding a simple game, called dtmf guess. Basically,
you have 60 seconds to guess as many dtmf tones as you can, and then
there will be score boards and stats.
I might possily include other modes, for example musical notes.
What do you guys think?

2011-01-12 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,

Hi Davy,

Yeah, you know, I was thinking that the 10 buttons may just have been the
number of buttons that the code found on the joystick (steering wheel)
that I had plugged in at the time. It may find more or less depending on
what stick or pad I plug in.

Just one little typo and it made the entire code useless.

[Audyssey] chain link question

2011-01-12 Thread NIcol
Hi all
I find chane link a very interesting but challenging game.
I often cannot complete a chane as quite a number of words are unfamiliar to
me so I have to often ask all the letters of a word from the game so that
I only have to get the last letter in a word Probably because I do not live
in the united states .I just now got a very strange chane.
Can anybody please tell me what is the relation between zucchini and bread?
The rest of the words in the chane was easier.
Below bread was money, then bank, then safe, then lock then hair.
But I am very puzzled about those first 2 words in the chane.
Happy gaming.

I see that you're a fighter, so if you're having a lot of trouble with
lower level areas it's probably that your equipment is mismatched for
your character. For a fighter, the most important types of equipment
are those with hitroll and damroll on them. This raises your damage
level and makes it a lot easier to kill things. It's a good idea to
sacrifice armor for hitroll and damroll, especially at low levels.

well yes I have heard of perfect pitch in fact I have perfect pitch
myself that's why I thought of making this game. Because even though
you might have perfect pitch, itstill requries some people to think
for a whileuntil they get it right unless they're very very used to
it. Not with musical notes because I'm used to them, but for dtmf
tones it is slightly harder.

Lori,

There's a bunch of different sound packs for different clients - if
you can tell me which one you're using, I can try to find the person
who maintains the soundpack for you. If it's the Mush client, you can
probably get help using the 'zt' channel in-game.

There are quest walkthroughs for the beginning quests on the web pages

Hi Davy,

Yeah, you know, I was thinking that the 10 buttons may just have been the
number of buttons that the code found on the joystick (steering wheel)
that I had plugged in at the time. It may find more or less depending on
what stick or pad I plug in.

Top Speed can do that with joystick buttons, and possibly more, as well.
But it would appear that the input manager had some issues (we don't touch

thinking that the list wouldn't mind a 25 KB file. But I think it didn't
work out too well after all. *laughs*

Hi Thomas,

I know that in my games I need to reset the sapi5 voice engine before changing
engines. That is going from an AT&T voice to a Neo Speech, Microsoft or

So I do the below code whenever changing to a new voice. nov being the number

Set Voice = Nothing
   Set Voice = New SpVoice
Set Voice.Voice = Voice.GetVoices().Item(nov)

So that is just in VB6 with the sapi5 voices.
