[Audyssey] Heli

2011-01-28 Thread Damien Pendleton
Hi,
I'm thinking we should port Heli over to BGT. What are your thoughts? If there
are no objections, is there anyone helping with the VB version who'd like to
help me convert it?
Regards,
Damien.

Well done. I really liked the article. You raised some very good

Re: [Audyssey] RSW strategy game

2011-01-28 Thread David Rose

Hi Shiny Protector,

This game is a space battle. Players compete with each other for
ownership of worlds and their resources which they use to build ships
and fleets. It's a fairly straightforward (if complex) strategy game,
along the same lines as Risk or similar board games, but it is played
over several days or weeks on the internet.

The game requires skill with diplomacy and negotiation, and/or with
battle tactics and maneuvering, but has very little to do with
philosophy. And I'm not sure what RS refers to.

Ok, for example, in coding for 3d you have to write something like
heli3d.setposition 5, 0, 5, ds3d_immediate
Well, I came across three different variants I hadn't realized were even
there. First I had ds3d - immediate,

in another place I had ds3d_imeediate
and somewhere else I had d3d_immediate.
The option explicit made me see all those problems and fix them.
I am using NVDA, and wordpad to do the programming, so the punctuation
wasn't spoken--and it would drive me nuts if it were, so I missed all that.
The option explicit is like a net. Yeah, having to declare variables is a
pain, but I think it saves some time in the long run.

Hi Ken,

The first thing that I did when I started writing in VB6 was to get rid of
the option explicit. I had never needed to declare variables in any Basic
before and I did not want to start.

May I ask what you mean by you'll slip by with bad errors if you do not
use the option explicit?

Re: [Audyssey] RSW strategy game

2011-01-28 Thread David Rose

Hi Zack,

I think my earlier response to your message must have gotten lost--my
responses to other people on this list have finally shown up, but not
this one. Odd. Maybe I replied using the wrong email address. Well,
here it is again.

Great, I'm looking forward to hearing about your experience! The
complete game rules are available online via HTML, or as a downloadable
PDF file--is one of these forms easier to read than the other? It
occurs to me now that neither form is available via the email interface,
but I could correct this. I could also provide it as a single one-page
HTML file, and I could probably convert it to plain text as well.

As to how I came to this list, well, I did seek it out. I was listing
the features of RSW that make it uniquely different from all of the
other free games on the web, and one of them that came to mind was its
(at least theoretical) accessibility due to its nature.

Re: [Audyssey] Game Engines was Heli

2011-01-28 Thread Philip Bennefall

Hi Thomas,

We are certainly in agreement here. Unicode conversions, memory management
and all the other things are certainly a pain which I guess is why we are
writing engines. Smile. Luckily AngelScript has built in garbage collection
so I didn't have to worry about that part, but I did have to write a small
converter function from char* to WCHAR* etc. Not a big deal if it is called
behind the scenes by the scripting engine but if you need to actively use it
while programming, that's not so good.

As for .net, I dislike it for a few reasons. First of all, it is huge. Huge,
bulky, and constantly being updated so you need to download new versions of
the thing. There is no reason why a few programming components should be
that large, in my opinion. Granted Windows Vista and above are including
.net, but then there is the issue of extra dependencies, like to play
certain games you need to install not only .net but also this extra wrapper,
and then a wrapper for that wrapper. Not something I'll cheer for. When I
download a game, I just want it to run. I don't want to care about what it
uses internally. See my drift? I also don't like the fact that .net programs
are so easy to reverse engineer, and to protect yourself you need to get yet
another extra add-on. Not nice. Oh I don't have a problem that a high level
language compiles into mid-level byte code, .net does it and so does
AngelScript and Lua and what have you, but the environment should take
measures to secure the byte code. I use strong encryption to protect mine in
BGT. Oh I'm sure it can be cracked, but at least I am trying and not making
people get an upgrade just to have basic security features.

How come you decided to switch from .net to C++? What were your main
reasons?

Kind regards,

Philip Bennefall

Hi Philip,

You definitely have a point. Although, I know C++ fairly well myself I
don't like using it as much as something like C# .NET just because its
a little too low-level for my liking. As author Jesse Liberty put it
in his book Teach Yourself C# .net in 21 Days, going back to C++ is
like pulling teeth. He has a very good point as C# .net via the .NET
Framework wraps all that low-level stuff in a high-level interface.

For example, as you know and I know, a lot of the Windows API
functions take Unicode character strings. Well, if you have a lot of
anci strings you have to convert them to an unicode wide character
string before passing them to the API function. That's a pain in the
butt. In .net languages you don't have to worry about that problem
because the System::String class can convert between ansci and unicode
quite easily.

Then, there is the issue of memory management and garbage collection.
To be honest the garbage collecter is one of the strong advantages to
using .net languages rather than C++. With C++ you are on your own
unless you write your own garbage collecter to manage garbage
collection in the background.

Anyway, I agree with you. For various reasons writing games in C++ is
a pain. There is no doubt about that. Using a scripting language like
Angelscript or using a .net language as a high-level interface is
obviously a much easier solution all things considered.

Although, I'm curious to know why you don't like .net. There is a lot
i personally like about it, and for Windows programming it makes my
life as a programmer much much easier. There is also Mono, a Mac/Linux
implamentation of .net, which really makes cross-platform development
fairly straight forward for a lot of apps.

As for the BGT documentation I can't honestly remember when the last
time I looked at them was. It was well before 1.0 came out. Maybe beta
3 or beta 4. Something along that lines. As you said, a lot has
changed since then, and I should have looked before saying what I
said.

Cheers!

On 1/27/11, Philip Bennefall phi...@blastbay.com wrote:

Hi Thomas,

I don't know when you last viewed the BGT documentation but until fairly
recently, the more advanced object oriented parts of the language were not
covered at all in the tutorial. AngelScript has inheritance, polymorphism
through interfaces, overloaded functions and class operators, and even
such

things as function pointers. So while not quite a programming language it
comes very close while stil being extremely simple, and I would never go
back to writing actualg ame logic in C++ again. I'm all for using C++
where

speed/performance is concerned, but equally as convinced that high level
game logic should be written in a high level language. And since I am not
a

fan of .net, I ended up using a scripting solution. This way I don't even
have to initialize anything, no need to open a device, set up DirectInput

hello David.

I'm interested to try your stratogy game, also because I am a memeber of the
audiogames.net staff, I can put it on our database to make it more well
known as an accessible game.

However, I do have a coupl.e of questions.

firstly, your quick walkthrough and sample list in the help documents
mentions nothing of the E-mail client or textual interface, it gives all
instructions entirely with reference to screen shots in the graphical
client.

Would it be possible to see some sample turns of a game? that way we would
most easily be able to determine any access issues which may come up,
without having to inconvenience other players.

currently for instance, i'm uncertain of what the review of the galactic
map, what worlds you own and where your fleets and ships and your opponents
are would look like in text.

Obviously, to be able to play on an equal footing the text review of this
information must be equally comprehensive and as good at providing an
overview.

as Sarah has said, there are virtually no games like this online, indeed the
only manufacturer of them I found used complex html and graphic turn maps
and thus proved entirely inaccessible (not to mention a rather complex way
of submitting turn orders), so I deffinately see the advantage here.

I think my earlier response to your message must have gotten lost--my
responses to other people on this list have finally shown up, but not this
one. Odd. Maybe I replied using the wrong email address. Well, here it
is again.

Great, I'm looking forward to hearing about your experience! The complete
game rules are available online via HTML, or as a downloadable PDF
file--is one of these forms easier to read than the other? It occurs to
me now that neither form is available via the email interface, but I could
correct this. I could also provide it as a single one-page HTML file, and
I could probably convert it to plain text as well.

As to how I came to this list, well, I did seek it out. I was listing the
features of RSW that make it uniquely different from all of the other free
games on the web, and one of them that came to mind was its (at least
theoretical) accessibility due to its nature.

www.audiogames.net and www.pcsgames.net are great places to find out more
accessible games.

Pcsgames.net has a large, comprehensive list of website links, while
audiogames.net has a database you can search, and some hopefully
comprehensive game descriptions and reviews.

Hopefully both sites will help you find more games to play.

Hi Shiny Protector,

This game is a space battle. Players compete with each other for
ownership of worlds and their resources which they use to build ships and
fleets. It's a fairly straightforward (if complex) strategy game, along
the same lines as Risk or similar board games, but it is played over
several days or weeks on the internet.

The game requires skill with diplomacy and negotiation, and/or with battle
tactics and maneuvering, but has very little to do with philosophy. And
I'm not sure what RS refers to.

couldn't test the accessibility of my RSW website directly. But then I
realized that every Mac has VoiceOver built-in, and it's quite nice!
I've been going through my web pages with VoiceOver, and I've found a
number of minor issues that I'll be correcting.

But I'd hate to fine-tune my pages to VoiceOver's quirks only, without
knowing about similar quirks in other software. In particular, what do
Windows users typically use to browse the web? I see that Narrator is
built-in to Windows, but it's almost unusable. Even Narrator itself
recommends users buy a third-party program instead.

So, if I were to purchase one such third-party program for the purpose
of testing my website's accessibility under Windows, which program
should it be?

Thanks!
David

Hi all, matheus, who's also on this list, just tolled me that DNE2 came out.
Now the surprising thing it does not appear accessible. Well the map part. He
said he tried clicking on things and it didn't work, and there's no
compatibility mode in options.
Needless to say, I am quite surprised. Perhaps dark or anyone else that's been

Thanks for the advice, everyone! NVDA and System Access are workable,
but clumsy. JAWS is much nicer, it approaches VoiceOver in usability,
but it's incredibly expensive (you could buy a new computer for less).
Of course, I can use it in the free demo mode for my purposes, but do
people really spend so much on JAWS?

I guess the most important question is, what software do people actually
use? I see after a quick inspection that all of these options read my
webpages slightly differently. I don't want to waste time making it
work well with a program that no one uses.

Thanks,
David

Subject: [Audyssey] Windows screen reader software?

Hi folks,

My apologies if I bring up a question that has already been discussed to
death, but I don't see anything about this in a casual browsing of the
archives.

At first I thought I didn't have any screen reader software, so I
couldn't test the accessibility of my RSW website directly. But then I
realized that every Mac has VoiceOver built-in, and it's quite nice!
I've

been going through my web pages with VoiceOver, and I've found a number
of minor issues that I'll be correcting.

So, if I were to purchase one such third-party program for the purpose
of

testing my website's accessibility under Windows, which program should
it

be?

Thanks!
David

Re: [Audyssey] Windows screen reader software?

2011-01-28 Thread Kai

Greetings David.

Despite its prohibitive cost, JAWS definitely dominates the screen reader
market due to governmental endorsement through purchase orders for
educational institutions and other services.

Regarding making your site accessible: generally, if it's accessible to
NVDA, it will more than likely be accessible to the bigger screen readers
(JAWS, Window-Eyes, System Access, etc). Feel free to test your site with
NVDA. At worst, you'll get some strange JAWS behaviour, which can be
rectified upon user input.

well any screen reader will work, strictly speaking there is some w3c
guidelines at w3c.org or something but I have never viewed this.
These guidelines are for accessability and are probably something you
want to look for.
Having headings and sub headings were applicable, lists, bulleted or
otherwise, forms list combo boxes, labeled radio and check controls etc.
Text modes or just text and no graphics, though alt text descriptions
of images will be good.

No image links if you can possably avoid those.
No flash unless you label everything i guess, and audio, well no
music playing in the site because it can go over the volume of readers.
But having a theme, buttons and links making noise, small audio
messages on the site, in fact as long as you don't overdo it you can
be as fancy with audio as you want.

Though be wary for those using mobile devices etc.

well comercial readers cost loads.
Jaws is not the be all end all though loads of people in
organisations will tell you its the only one.

Nvda is a simple reader that is a narater replacement.
If you never have any need to run vertual mode or anything then nvda
works quite well.

Its also not to bad though I would never use it as a full time reader ofcause.
Its opensource, you should get on the lists or something if you think
you can help they are always fixing things.

Re: [Audyssey] Windows screen reader software?

2011-01-28 Thread Scott Chesworth
Hi David,

Yup, as a user experience NVDA feels a little clunky at times, but I'd
still recommend testing with that on Windows. My thinking is that NVDA
currently has the least amount of quirks in terms of how it interprets
HTML, so although it's a bit raw, a page that is easy for you to use
with both NVDA and VoiceOver shouldn't throw up any surprises no
matter what people are using.

For the record, your JAWS is much nicer, it approaches VoiceOver in
usability comment gave me a good laugh. Talk like that would get you
the cyber equivalent of a standing ovation from some groups of blind
folks, and thrown to the lions by others. Fortunately, this list is
pretty neutral.

Good luck, and if there's anything specific you get stuck on
accessibility-wise just shout.

Scott

Re: [Audyssey] Windows screen reader software?

2011-01-28 Thread Kai
sevgiler: Rather than subjecting David to personal opinions about screen
readers, lets attempt to be objective to give him the information he needs.
In this instance, David is asking what screen reader people use most, not
necessarily which is the best or worst, or even which one performs poorly.
I happen to use NVDA right along side my JAWS, and they are, for me, very
comparable products, with the added bonus that NVDA is free. Plenty of
people use NVDA on a regular basis without complaint, so such negative
statements about its viability are at best unfair.
Criticism is all well and good (I do plenty of that myself), but lets do so
in an appropriate thread/forum, if we must.

Thanks!
David

well if you think nvda has all the features of all the comercial
readers then you are gona be rather dissapointed.
Compaired to comercial readers its a bunch of crap, no vertual
cursers, and not necessarily good flash or image link detection.

But on the other side it has good web navigation compared to jaws.
I has never crashed on websites at all, at least not the stable versions.
Except for a few apps its quite stable and its python powered.
Its also fast, and can run with about anything you care to shove it at.
Its also is portable and small.
Concider nvda an advanced narater clone.
It works for general basic work in fact I use it on a win7 system
where I don't need advanced software quite well.

Hi David,
Speaking for myself, I use Window-Eyes on the PC and VoiceOver on the Mac, and
Speakup under Linux. The latter would probably be difficult to test, as it
requires a complete new OS, and besides is definitely in the minority as far as
total usage goes.
Hope this helps,
Zack.

Thanks for the advice, everyone! I apologize for setting off a
firecracker in your midst. :)

I will continue to test with NVDA and back it up with an occasional
check with JAWS and Window-Eyes on the PC, and VoiceOver on Mac.

(The accessibility guidelines are useful, and of course I have been
following them; but it's still important to know how actual
implementations respond to webpages in practice. It's the same reason a
web developer should always test his page on several different browsers.)

My previous email in this thread was lost, perhaps because the mail

order sheet.)

But the more important part of that email was this: Why don't I create a
private game for all the possibly-interested people on this list, just
to try out the rules and see how the game works? I can set up a Core
game, which is usually a better choice for a beginner because the rules

How many people would be interested? Zack, Dark, Sarah? Anyone else?

Hi David.

most windows screen reader users use one of three programs. jaws, window
eyes or hal (what I use).

these days though, web navigation is such a fairly standardized business,
your only likely to run into trouble access wise if your websites include
none standard controls, flash, funny java aps or similar.

bog standard text and links with labled images isn't likely to cause
trouble, and certainly i noticed nothing when brouser the site myself.

2011-01-28 Thread dark
Last I heard, niels was working on access features in empires and dungeons
and I've been in discussion with him about ways to make a screen reader
accessible map for the game.

It's entirely possible though, that this mode isn't ready yet and won't be
out for another version or two, pluss will take some beta testing to get
right.

As Anyone who remembers the initial releases of smugglers 4 will know, it'll
work out in the end.

i would however urge people to write supportive comments on niels' blog and
express interest in a compatibility mode for the game, sinse that gives him
far more motivation to work on it.

Hi all, matheus, who's also on this list, just tolled me that DNE2 came
out. Now the surprising thing it does not appear accessible. Well the map
part. He said he tried clicking on things and it didn't work, and there's
no compatibility mode in options.
Needless to say, I am quite surprised. Perhaps dark or anyone else that's
been in contact with Neil can shed some light on this.

Re: [Audyssey] Windows screen reader software?

2011-01-28 Thread dark

Hi David.

hal, which i use is very useable, and reads your pages perfectly well.

Also, though it is expensive, it's not as bad as jaws for price (but that's
starting another arguement which i won't begin now).

all the best,

Thanks for the advice, everyone! NVDA and System Access are workable, but
clumsy. JAWS is much nicer, it approaches VoiceOver in usability, but
it's incredibly expensive (you could buy a new computer for less). Of
course, I can use it in the free demo mode for my purposes, but do people
really spend so much on JAWS?

I guess the most important question is, what software do people actually
use? I see after a quick inspection that all of these options read my
webpages slightly differently. I don't want to waste time making it work
well with a program that no one uses.

Thanks,
David

But the more important part of that email was this: Why don't I create a

Re: [Audyssey] Windows screen reader software?

2011-01-28 Thread Jorge Gonçalves
I know that we will never agree in terms of screen reader. It's like
clothes, it's a matter of taste.
And each person uses the computer diffrently with diffrent purposes and
diffrent applications etc.

I personally love NVDA and honestly it's my favourite screen reader.
I love the screen reader on itself, and I like the concept!
I think that blind people should pay for what they need in life just
like everyone else.
But the access to the computers is somehow diffrent because it involves
access to education and access to emploiment etc.
When you have someone who will employ a blind person and he or she knows
that he will have to pay more than one thousand Euros for allowing this
blind person working for me, he or she will probably think twice.
If you have a freeware screenreader, at least you have the option of
doing it otherwise and you have the possibility of employing a person
for no more cost than other workers..
A freeware screenreader opens a lot of doors for blind people all around
the world and remember that blind people are not only from rich countries.
Allthough you probably don't listen them much on this list, there are
blind people in a lot of countries in development.

And nvda opened the door to them to legally have access to school and work.
You will not ask schools in poor countries to pay more than 1000 Euros
for teaching blind students with computers don't you?
I don't care eif it's better or worst and even more, I think there is
space for everyone.
If you have a lot of money and want something extraordinary and
wonderful buy your beautiful jaws!

But others also have the right to use computers.
For me NVVDA does everything what I need and it's light, eficient and
suits all my needs.
If you give me a legal copy of others, I will stay with nvda because I
simply like it.
Allthough NVDA is not competing with comercial screen readers, I
understand why their sellers are nervous!
And my last point the people who most criticize NVDA, we know very well
why they do it and we also know what very often they do with comercial ones.

Cheers,
Jorge

| Hi folks,
|
| My apologies if I bring up a question that has already been

|
| At first I thought I didn't have any screen reader software, so I

Last I heard, niels was working on access features in empires and dungeons
and I've been in discussion with him about ways to make a screen reader
accessible map for the game.

It's entirely possible though, that this mode isn't ready yet and won't be
out for another version or two, pluss will take some beta testing to get
right.

As Anyone who remembers the initial releases of smugglers 4 will know,
it'll work out in the end.

i would however urge people to write supportive comments on niels' blog
and express interest in a compatibility mode for the game, sinse that
gives him far more motivation to work on it.

Perhaps dark or anyone else that's
been in contact with Neil can shed some light on this.

separately as a downloadable game. I'm still hoping that Ian Humfreys from
Spoonbill Software will eventually create a good free version like he has
with Scrabble.

Subject: [Audyssey] Backgammon

 Hi,

Is there a good accessible backgammon game out there?

I remember purchasing one a few years back, but there've been a few
computers between me and that game, and I don't have it anymore.

 Thanks.

OK, I've created a test game for anyone interested. The game ID is
reserve5w. The easiest way to sign up for this game is to send an
email to r...@rswgame.com with exactly the following line in the message
body (not the subject):

join game=reserve5w handle=myname

where myname is your in-game name, which can be anything you like
(without any spaces). You can also sign up via the web page at
https://rswgame.com/en/listAvailable by entering reserve5w in the
field at the bottom of the page, and clicking the Sign Up button.

The game will begin in 24 hours, with whoever has signed up by that
point. I'll walk everyone through the first few turns as we go.

Kind of wonder which, would have or, has wasted more time. Trying to figure

Subject: [Audyssey] marvel vs. capcom 3 details

So now that the game is less than a month away from release, I
figured I'd post some stuff about how the games works, as a fighting
game player and as someone who's been wanting this game for years...
gameplay first though.

Marvel Vs. capcom 3 is going to be 3 on 3 like marvel vs. capcom 2.
For those who don't know, 3 on 3 does not mean six-player action. You
choose a team of three characters, and you duke it out with another
team of three. You play until one team has been eliminated all the
way. The trick is, as you play you can tag characters in and out, so
you can strategize who you want to use when. The gameplay is fast,
but not quite as fast as MVC 2. However, it still may take some time
to get used to the game if you aren't used to that speed. I urge
everyone not to make this a turnoff though, as getting used to how
fast MVC play can be is not as bad as it seems. The game will feature
the usual special moves along with super flashy hyper combos aka
super moves that you can perform. The super meter has five bars this
time around, and each character will have what are called two level 1
supers and one level 3. These take up one level of your meter and
three, respectively.

Controls:
The controls in marvel vs. capcom 3 are as follows: three attack
buttons and a fourth button known as the exchange or e button. This
button is used for launching opponents into the air for an air combo
as well as being used to tag partners in and out. A list of the
buttons follows:
A: light attack
B: medium attack
C: heavy attack
E: exchange button.

A, B, C and e are how the buttons are going to be listed in faqs and guides.

This game has at least 30 characters, with probably more to be
revealed. Capcom characters will have the option for english or
japanese voice acting, and marvel characters will posess english
only. I will list as many of the characters as I remember, and for
the capcom characters I will list what series they are originally
from. Marvel characters will only have their names, as I'm not as
knowledgeable about comics as I would like to be.

Capcom lineup:
Akuma: Street fighter
Chun li: street fighter
Ryu: Street Fighter
Morigan: Darkstalkers
Felicia: darkstalkers
Dante: Devil May Cry
Trish: Devil May Cry
Chris Redfield: Resident Evil
Viewtiful Joe: from the viewtiful joe series
Albert Wesker: Resident Evil
Tron-bon: Megaman
Crimson Viper: Street Fighter
Zero: Megaman
Mike Hagger: Final fight

Marvel Lineup:
Wolverine
Captain America
Spider Man]
Iron Man
Hulk
She-hulk
DR. Doom
Magneto
MODOK
Dormamu
Storm
Phoenix / dark phoenix

That's all I can think of for now... enjoy the info... and when I get
the game on the day of release, expect a recording!

Clement.
PS: for all those concerned about learning hard inputs for moves,
fear not. There is a simple mode for those players who just want to
jump right in and play. One button will be assigned to regular
attacks, one for special moves and one for hyper combos. This will be
opposed to the standard fighting game fare of quarter circle motions,
dragon punch motions, etc.

Hi,
I know this is not ehe message which used the remote analogy but I thought I
needed to say this. The analogy is most definitely flawed. With a remote we
can feel all of the buttons. Not to mention many of them are
distinguishable. A touch screen is, though...a touch screen. There is no
characteristic that separates this control from that one. Now I've had
success with Beepbeep, for example, but there are very few controls there.

Anyway, it's really not that hard with a little memorization. While I
totally agree with you that people should push for active accessibility on
apps, I also believe we should meet them half way. Meaning we should go the
extra mile if an app is like pretty accessible and we can figure it out,
(shoot them a note with there acessibility faults yeah), but don't complain
about it. If an app is completely crutial to your survival, sure, ralley
and send begging letters. As you'll probably either know or find out, some
companies like soul trapper will steadfastly refuse, and others will say
their looking into it to please us, and others still will make them
accessible. I don't agree that we should all spam the developers. A
patition maybe.

Every screen reader user has their preference, or is limited to a particular
screen reader due to financial circumstances. For me, JAWS for Windows is
my choice because, as far as I know, it is the most flexible. I am
fortunate enough to be employed, and can afford it. It is, to me, the best,
but is also the most expensive. It suits all of my needs and then some.

Hi folks,

My apologies if I bring up a question that has already been discussed to
death, but I don't see anything about this in a casual browsing of the
archives.

At first I thought I didn't have any screen reader software, so I couldn't
test the accessibility of my RSW website directly. But then I realized
that every Mac has VoiceOver built-in, and it's quite nice! I've been
going through my web pages with VoiceOver, and I've found a number of
minor issues that I'll be correcting.

So, if I were to purchase one such third-party program for the purpose of
testing my website's accessibility under Windows, which program should it
be?

Thanks!
David

I think you'll be satisfied using NVDA. Everything that works with JAWS
seems also to work with NVDA. There is also the benefit of mouse tracking;
which you don't get with JAWS.

| Hi folks,
|
| My apologies if I bring up a question that has already been discussed
to
| death, but I don't see anything about this in a casual browsing of the
| archives.
|
| At first I thought I didn't have any screen reader software, so I
| couldn't test the accessibility of my RSW website directly. But then
I

| realized that every Mac has VoiceOver built-in, and it's quite nice!
| I've been going through my web pages with VoiceOver, and I've found a
| number of minor issues that I'll be correcting.
|
| But I'd hate to fine-tune my pages to VoiceOver's quirks only, without
| knowing about similar quirks in other software. In particular, what
do

| Windows users typically use to browse the web? I see that Narrator is
| built-in to Windows, but it's almost unusable. Even Narrator itself
| recommends users buy a third-party program instead.
|
| So, if I were to purchase one such third-party program for the purpose
| of testing my website's accessibility under Windows, which program
| should it be?
|
| Thanks!

Re: [Audyssey] New Heli available for download

2011-01-28 Thread Ken the Crazy
Well Jim, I think you do wonderfully. I'm not a fan of the option explicit
myself, but since this is the first 3d audio game I've ever made, much less
seen code for, it helped to figure out what I was doing wrong. Also, I
learned another valuable lesson: don't load your directx components in the
form load sub. If you do, you won't be able to move the listener.
By the way, the newest Heli is on its way. Just added wind speed, so if
you're going fast you hear it as it passes through the wind. Not so
realistic for a toy helicopter, but cool anyway, and if I make a full-on
helicopter sim sometime I'll have the code handy.

Hi Ken,

Ok, I can see how the option explicit might come in handy for making sure
that you do not miss name variable names. And I can not say that I have
not been frustrated a few times when I have miss typed a variable name a

Kind of wonder which, would have or, has wasted more time. Trying to

Re: [Audyssey] Heli

2011-01-28 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,

Well, there are plenty of good and viable reasons to use BGT rather
than Visual Basic.

First of all, is compatibility with newer Windows operating systems.
Unlike XP none of the Visual Basic 6 runtimes ship with Windows 7
requiring various legacy files to be installed. Even then Visual Basic
doesn't use newer APIs like XAudio2, which is the new audio API for
Windows 7, and I have it on good authority that BGT will support
XAudio2 in a newer release. You can't necessarily say the same for
Visual Basic 6 based games using legacy DirectX libs like dxvb8.dll.

Second of all, there is the advantage of a c-style syntax. As I have
often said most programming languages out there use a c-style syntax
and standard. The advantage of using BGT over Visual Basic as it is an
easy way to get familiar with c-style languages like C++, Java, C#,
Perl, etc. What you learn in BGT will cary over if you want to do
programming in another programming language. Visual Basic quite
litterally is a road to nowhere.

Third of all, there is availability of the software. Visual Basic 6
was released in 1998, and hasn't officially been sold in stores since
around 2002 when Visual Basic 7 was released. That means in order to
buy it one would have to go to Ebay or somewhere and purchase a copy
which isn't worth the price you'll end up paying for it. On the other
hand BGT is brand new software, is up to date, and costs as little as
$29.00 for a basic version. That's a pretty good deal.

Finally, there is development itself. BGT wraps things like Sapi,
DirectSound, DirectInput, networking, etc and offers it in one single
easy to use package. With Visual Basic you litterally have to write
your own wrappers or code it directly into your project to get the
same support. For example, to get DirectSound going you have to
initialize it in Visual Basic, but BGT automatically handles
initialization for you. This makes programming games much simpler in
the long run.

HTH

Re: [Audyssey] New Heli available for download

2011-01-28 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,

It is not extra work or waisted time/energy. It is generally
recommended that you declare variables using the proper data type like
integer, string, character, boolean, etc as it will improve memory
usage and CPU usage. Every time you declare a variable without
specifying its data type you force the runtime environment to
interpret your code, and as a result you end up waisting your system
resources on runtime interpretation of your code. So it really does
not pay to be a lazy programmer. Which is exactly what you are when
you don't declare and properly initialize variables.

Cheers!
