Hi Scot,

There is no point of being angry. I mean, on the field of battle, you can't
think that your angry. You might only have a fraction of a second to work
out your move out next.

Hi Clement,

I'll fess up now and say that I totally intend to get you started on
x-ray moves. I'm wondering whether we think the same thing.

I actually pulled off my first ever X-ray move by accident. Oh the
joys of button mashing!

Having learned how to execute them intentionally now, they've started
to really irritate me. Essentially I think the problem is, while they
sound and by all accounts look great, they totally break the constant
pressure of the fight. Things like mega long combos or chains of
attacks make me panic when I'm on the receiving end or exhilerated
when I'm the one dealing them out, but X-ray doesn't manage to do
that. I think the problem is that once the sequence has started, so
far as I can tell there's no way to break it, so the person on the
receiving end just sits there hopelessly. The sequences take so long
that I have time to be angry that someone's x-rayed me, sad that my
character is having a bad day internally all of a sudden, but then
there's also time to consider what to do next. On the other end of the
equation, they're not satisfying to be the person who's dishing them
out either. I think that's because they aren't hard enough to execute,
so there's no big sense of achievement, just the break in the rhythm
of the fight. That disruption has put me off my stride enough that
I've almost lost matches I was comfortably winning before throwing an
X-ray into the mix.

Is that what you meant by broken? To me, they just seem like a gimick.
Sad part is that they didn't need to be there. It's hard to tell how
deep this new engine is just from the characters in the demo, but to
me, it definitely feels like an improvement from MK VS DC. It's all
subjective of course, but that would've been enough for me I think
without the new gimick.

like the way supers are performed in this game. A motion followed by
two attack buttons, doesn't matter what they are it would

the motion and you can use any attack depending on how damaging you
want the combo to be. Allowing simple mode online sure causes
cheating though. I dunno if you can even chain combos with simple

Hi,

You have to align yourself with the landing beacon by listening to its
beeps and getting as close to a locking tone as you can. keep speed high
i you make turns and only then lower it.

[Audyssey] Problem with MOTA.

Hi Tom and all,

On the first level in MOTA, where you go over the fire, and then swing down to
press a lever? It seems like sometimes that lever unlocks the door at the top
of the stairs from before the fire sometimes, and sometimes it doesn't. Is this
supposed to be this way? I just find myself having to go down the rope like two
three times before I can get the door unlocked.
Just curious,

For some reason, I can not get it to work at all in the windows 7 nor in the
world of the 64 bit processor.
Can anyone give me some advice on a USB unit that would work with TDV and if
at all possible to also work with the hand to ear games that are out on the
market that have USB support written into them.
I would love to be able to play the games from BSC games and the new games
from Tom's company with a USB handheld controller. Since some of the newer
games like tdv have force feedback written into them. So the unit would have
to have force feedback feature written into them for realistic play as well.
In short for those using a USB controller and live here in the United
States. What are you using, where did you pick it up at and roughly what was
the price and could you ship a manual and or description of the layout of
the buttons and features of the unit and hopefully it is a duel flight stick
on the unit.
At first I couldn't get the force feedback to work on the 2909 in a 64 bit
world, then it got to be that I couldn't turn nor do anything with the unit.
So I need some help from my fellow gamers who's playing the hand to ear
games and the hand to ear flight simulators with a USB controller instead of
the keyboard.
I deeply appreciate the help for all who will take the time to write me back
on this question.
If you'd like, the address is at the bottom of this letter.
But there's other's probably asking the same question.

newer up to date USB unit that will work for our purposes.

 Hi.
I'm having the same problem with the sgz 2909.
I now have a 64 bit system, and it won't work correctly.
Does the wireless one have force feedback?
 Thanks.

Re: [Audyssey] wrestling games

2011-04-08 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,

Yeah, the basic idea I had for this wrestling game is to create a
text-based game similar to Piledriver or Wrestling League Manager
accept I could add sounds, music, and/or create a better A.I. etc for
the wrestlers. Make the matches more realistic by tailoring the moves
to a wrestlers specific style of wrestling rather than a generic A.I.
for all wrestlers.

Of course, I could make it self-voicing too, add SAPI support, etc,
but I kind of find that unnecessary. The main reason is, and this
could be screen reader specific, but with Window-Eyes assoon as the
text changes on screen it reads everything automatically. That's why I
don't have really a problem with Frotz, Scare, etc for playing text
adventures. It reads everything as soon as the screen changes and I
don't really have to review the screen unless I missed something or
want to check a spelling etc.

Naturally, if this is an issue with screen readers like Jaws not
properly reading the text prompts I could use SAPI etc, but I hate the
idea of having to depend on any Windows specific technology like that.
The more dependencies I add the more code I have to remove and rewrite
for a non-Windows port. That doubles the time and effort involved.
Which brings me to another point you brought up in your message.

The main reason I currently don't have a Linux/Mac OS port of
Mysteries of the Ancients has to do with the API I was using during
beta 14/15. It appears that SFML has a bug in how it handles Windows
display drivers causing the API to blue screen and crash on certain
Windows PCS. So far the problem doesn't apply to Linux or Mac OS based
PCS. Obviously, for a stable comercial project SFML wouldn't work for
a game like MOTA.

There is an alternative API, which I eventually will be using, called
LibSDL. SDL doesn't have any problems with display drivers on Mac,
Linux, or Windows, and has decent keyboard and mouse input. The
joystick input is not quite up to DirectX quality so that's a
disadvantage for software developers. Although, SDL comes with an
audio API SDL Mixer I think I'd rather pair SDL with something like
FMOD or OpenAL which has superior 3d audio support, more DSP effects,
and things like that. Since all of this would take time I decided to
roll back to an older version of the engine, one using DirectX, and
release MOTA as is and wait for the rewrite of the cross-platform
engine. So that's why I have had problems with cross-platform
development.

However, with our wrestling game none of this has to be an issue. I
wasn't really planning on using SDL, DirectX, SFML, etc and simply
rely on simple input/output methods that every operating system uses.
Creating a simple input system such as pressing b for body slam or v
for virticle suplex is easy enough to do without resorting to low
level event driven input such as DirectInput or LibSDL provides. Of
course, if we are thinking something more than a text based game,
something a little more modern with speech, sounds, music, etc then it
would probably be better just to use SDL from the start.

As far as it being mainstream I wasn't saying i wanted to be
mainstream. I was merely pointing out that if I created it as a
text-based game some mainstream gamers might play it. True it isn't as
fantastic as WWE Raw VS Smackdown for the XBox etc but you never know
who might stumble across it and play it. My point simply was that text
games still have followers in some mainstream markets, and by writing
it as text it might apeal to that market.

into having it be cross platform. You know because that hasn't worked out

[Audyssey] Dumbing down games (was RE: anyone got anny suggestions for the next versionofbattlezone?)

2011-04-08 Thread Tom Randall
Hi all.

I've been following this very stimulating discussion. I'm also a bit of a
mainstream gamer as most of you know, I started out on the old Atari games
back when home computers were first coming out and audio games had not even
been thought of yet. For that reason I too am used to doing without audio
cues to a large extent and I mainly agree with the idea that figuring a game
out is more than half the fun. Having said that though, those of us who are
into these kinds of games and who enjoy figuring things out do need to
remember that not everyone is at this level and we don't want to discourage
new people from getting into gaming, the gods know there are few enough of
us as it is whether you are talking about mainstream or audio games. Just
as a for instance. I tried to get into audio quake a few years back, I even
went so far as to get hold of an old copy of the full game. I tried
learning how to make it work but I found it pretty impossible. The sound
cues just did not make any sense at all and I eventually got frustrated and
gave up. So I can see where some of these new gamers are maybe coming from.
From a programming standpoint I would not think it should be too hard to
satisfy both sides here, if a cue is subtle such as a slightly different
sounding footstep such as you encounter in shades of doom when you are close
to a wall this should not be intolerable to the advanced gamer who doesn't
want them. For things like targetting sounds I think these should be
optional so the beginner can use them but the advanced player can dispense
with them if he wishes.

Well that's my two cents' worth on this for now.

Game on.

Tom

To be fair, Yohandy has a point... most gamers learn that way. The
people who I mention who will not play a game until they've read a
complete walkthrough are in the minority. And I agree with this point
as well... part of the fun in the games is learning how to conquer
something, whether it be a puzzle, a particular type of enemy, whatever.

Hi Ron,

The Logitech F510 is exactly like the F710 except for the fact it has
a USB chord instead of a wireless connection. That's the only
principle difference between the two.

However, I've done a bit of googling, and it appears people are having
just as many problems with the F510 on Windows 7 64 as you had with
the F710. This sounds to me like a driver issue with companies like
Logitech and Philips etc as I have had no problems with either
controller on 32bit versions of Windows 7. In fact, MOTA was
personally tested by me on the Logitech F510 so I know it works on my
setup, but can't promise anything as far as 64bit Windows is concerned
since I don't yet own a 64bit machine and operating system.

Re: [Audyssey] Dumbing down games (was RE: anyone got anny suggestions for the next versionofbattlezone?)

2011-04-08 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Tom,

Interesting points you raised. As a gamer and software developer I
have to say I see both sides of the argument too. As you pointed out
just because someone like you or I is able to do without feature x
doesn't necessarily mean everybody can do without it.

For example, let's take targeting in Shades of Doom. Most of the time
I don't need the night scope beeping away in my ear to line up and
shoot a target. In fact, I personally find it a bit distracting so
usually turn it off. However, that doesn't mean that such a feature
should not exist, because I happen to know people who are physically
unable to play without it.

I happen to have a very long time friend who is totally blind from
birth, but she also has problems whith her hearing as well. She has a
difficult time playing anything as complex as Shades of Doom because
she can't hear things very well on her left side. As a result since
targeting requires centering a monster in her headphones she's not
able to do that because she can't hear very well out of her left ear.
She can, however, target using the night scope because it will
increase in pitch as she lines the target up. So an accessibility
feature like that is not just for someone who is blind, but may have
some hearing impairment too.

Same goes for this argument over weather or not there needs to be a
step sound for traps. Now, I've tried my best to work it into the
background ambience so it isn't exactly intrusive and sounds like it
truly belongs there. Again, personally, I probably don't need it. I
can usually judge by sound alone when or when not to jump. However,
coming back to my friend if she is walking left in MOTA she doesn't
have much functional hearing out of her left ear so judging when or
when not to jump a fire pit, lava pit, chasm, by sound alone is just
not possible for her. However, since adding the crumbling ledges she
knows she should try and jump because it plays out of both speakers,
and is an absolute indicator of a trap. So once again this feature
just doesn't help a blind player, but someone who may have other
disabilities such as being hard of hearing as well.

The point I'm getting at is when it comes to accessibility I don't
think there is any single one-size fits all solution. There are your
advanced gamers who don't need targeting sounds, step sounds for drop
offs, or any number of things. For others they simply are unable to
play the game without it. Either because they don't have the
experience you have, or they are physically unable to do that for one
reason or another. We really should not come down too harshly on the
developers who are trying to provide accessibility in the only way
they know how. I myself am having a serious challenge trying to make
Mysteries of the Ancients both accessible, but not dumb it down in the
process. It is not an easy balance to make given the fact that that no
two gamers are alike.

Cheers!

new people from getting into gaming, the gods know there are few enough of
us as it is whether you are talking about mainstream or audio games. Just
as a for instance.

 Game on.

 Tom

Hi Ryan,

The statues are on timers. When you unlock a statue it begins counting
down. If you don't get there and open it fast enough the statue will
relock and you will have to go reset the lever and unlock it again.

Is this supposed to be this way? I just find myself having to go down the
rope like two three times before I can get the door unlocked.
 Just curious,

In fact, MOTA was
personally tested by me on the Logitech F510 so I know it works on my
setup, but can't promise anything as far as 64bit Windows is concerned
since I don't yet own a 64bit machine and operating system.

ofbattlezone?

Before I go any further, let me just state that any comments I make on
this subject are purely for the sake of discussion... you're my friend and
I have no desire to antagonize you by going against you. lol.
The problem with judging distances, again, is that wind sound. You can't
concretely judge how far it is from you by just listening for it.. unless
you pinpoint the position of that sound in your headphones or speakers and
memorize where it is. And in frantic fights, if you have enemies coming at
you and your mind is bent on taking care of them first, you really don't
have the option to stop and judge that sound while you're being pummelled.

The problem with judging distances like they do in mainstream games is
that, a sighted person can look at that pit and see how wide it is,
whether they need a running jump or not. In audio games, you don't have
that. Unless the dev programs the look command to tell you how wide the
pit is, you have to guess. So some people would prefer warning sounds so
they at least have a source to go on. I personally don't care either way.
I played mainstream games for long periods of time before I even knew of
audio games, so it doesn't really matter to me. I can cope with either.

Target sounds for when enemies are in range is fair to me. Because why
stand there mashing space until you hit something? Especially in this
game, where the sound that is used to sound the attack is also the sound
that signifies the hit. There is no difference between the two... unlike
in mainstream games where you generally have a sound for the attack and a
second sound for the hit, so if you miss an attack, that hit effect won't
play. And fireballs are a different case from pits as you can stand still
and wait for it to come to you... and there really is no appropriate time
to duck. Soon as you hear a fireball, if you wanted you could just kill
nearby enemies and stay crouched until the fireball passes by. Sounds for
blades are not necessary as that would also remove challenge from the game
since the whole point is to time your run past them. That's where sighted
people and blind gamers have the same challenge. They have to observe the
paterns at which the blades shoot out and retract. We have to do the
same... with sound.

You asked how far do we take the dumbing down approach? This is exactly
what so many hardcore fighting game fans had about Marvel VS. Capcom 3 and
Street Fighter IV when they first came out... as a diehard fighting fan
myself, I knew where the arguments came from. Less buttons in the case of
MVC 3 as compared to MVC 2, supers and ultras in SF and the removal of the
perry system from SF 3, x-factor for MVC... I could go on and on. This was
all done to make the game more accessible for new players while still
retaining depth in the games. A lot of people said that that kind of
adjustment was dumbing the game down for the scrubs out there. Maybe
they're right. Maybe they're wrong. I personally think they're wrong...
because there's still a lot of deep fighting to be had in both games. That
kind of attitude is exactly why so many people never get into fighting
games... because the pros are so adverse to accessibility and the like.
When you look at it.. the two situations are remarkably similar.

I'm not asking for a three or two-step boundary cue. One step, like in
mota, is perfectly fine.
Hey, how about this: the kidnappers know you're a blind gamer that likes
excessive cues, so he puts gravel under a silently swinging blade! LOL

Clement,
I think you missed the sarcasm in my email. we're talking here a pit
that's like 3 steps wide. even if your jumping isn't spot on, if you hit
the right or left arrow fast enough after the jump chances are you'll get
across it. there's no need to practice a dozen times. I got it within my
first 2 tries. in a game like MOTA, sure. have some boundary sounds.
because that game you have a lot more to worry about than simply the jump
itself. like the analog jumping system and the running jumps for
instance. but in something like battle zone, it's just ridiculous to have
a pit sound. and I understand mainstream games have cues. so does battle
zone. you hear the wind noise to indicate a pit. so why do we also need
even more noises to tell the gamer ok, this is exactly where you must
jump, thus defeating the whole point of pits in the first place? this is
a reason I always speed run through super Liam. I constantly keep the run
button held down and dive over pits most of the time with no fail.
there's absolutely no challenge in that. sighted gamers don't have this
color coated spot on the ground that tells them when to jump you know.
they see a pit, they judge a good jumping distance, and go for it. blind
people should use their ears the same way. if the devs add a jump
boundary sound to pits, should they also add distinctive noises when
fireballs are too close so you can duck in time? a targeting sound when
enemies are in range? how about a sound to indicate you're getting too
close to some blades? how far do we take the dumb it down approach?

While I sympathize, I also feel the need to point out that mainstream
games, again, do give cues and warnings as well... all be it most of
them are visual. And how do you judge pit distances? In most games,
there's a wind sound to rely on Sure. But you have to realize that
headphones make things sound different so there's no concrete way to
measure distances simply by relying on that sound. And saying to a blind
gamer just learn by falling in that pit is like telling a sighted gamer
to figure out how to do supers and ultras in Street Fighter or any other
game that has them. All those games have command lists for that one
reason... so people can look at things for quick reference and get to
the real meat of the game. Same thing here. If you spend all your time
dying in pits, how are you going to beat the game with a high score?
Even judging distance takes time, and that detracts from your time
bonus.

At 08:28 AM 06/04/2011, you wrote:
It's definitely possible to judge distance in this game. so why would we
need a warning to know if we're close to a pit? just fall in the pit a
few dozen times and you'll eventually learn to jump. why must so many
blind gamers insist everything is spoon-fed to them? I'm not referring
to anyone in particular, but to the group as a whole. why do most blind
gamers shy away from challenge? This isn't even a Battlezone issue
specifically. whenever there's something a little challenging in a game,
people are always trying to come up with compromises like insert beeping
sounds, ways to get rid of that feature cause it's too hard, and so on.

dont have to mess up someone else's production to do so.
I am pretty sure you can contact the developer if you ___really___ would

Games we'd Like to play.
by Phil Vlasak

Youth Hunter: Mysteries of the Aging.

You Are Angela Carter, an elderly treasure hunter,
willing to risk everything to recover her long lost youth.
Her mission will not be an easy one, for she has waited so long for her
game to be finished. Now she must face many cosmetic procedures, such
as Botox treatments from high charging surgeons, Microdermabrasion, and
pills from Anti-Aging experts to re-gain her youthful appearance.
She must avoid such deadly traps as snake oil salesman , Magic Foot
Drafts, 3 Dimensional Age Defiance
cellular power infusions, Skin Laser Treatments, deep mud pack facial
cleansers, and poison Galvanic potions.
Along the way she can start working out on Elliptical Exercise
Equipment, Bowflex TreadClimbers, ancient Nordic Tracks, and the
Stamina Bio Flex 2200 to loose those added pounds she gained while
eating pizza and drinking beer waiting for her game to begin.
If Thomas finishes Angela's game, and she finally makes it to the Hall
of youth she must face her greatest challenge, suffering the effects of
aging for the rest of her natural life.
Which won't be very long due to all those nasty creatures who are
trying to kill her.

2011-04-08 Thread Mauricio Almeida
I'm sure i will receive a moderaytor warning for this, so i apologise in
advance.
shane, I am tired of receiving 200 e-mails from you a day. so what? are
you going to stop posting them just because i said so? probably not.
lets ignore the fact that my request is valid, and yours make no sense,
and talk about a command which you should know called delet. this
wonderful tool makes sure you exclude messages from your inbox which you
do not like.
Therefore, if i can use it on your messages for the simple reason you
post way too many, cant you delet link messages if they annoy you so
much and stop the whole argument over it?
this serves to every other winer as well.

sincerely yours

I agree with Angela. We don't sit around all day looking at this list like
clearly some of you do. I can tell by your continuous posts. So really, if
this list isn't to share links, what is it for? You all to complain about
how this or that isn't right in a game instead of just appreciating the
hard work of the developers? Yes, that must be what you all think it's for.
I'll know and learn from this never to ask for a link from you people

2011-04-08 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi all,

I thought I'd just step in here before this gets out of hand. Jess has
a bit of a point. One of the purposes of the list is to share links,
point people to websites where to find content, and sometimes we may
have to share this information more than once as sometimes it gets
missed for one reason or another by one or more list members.

However, that said, I incurrage people to use the list archives and
resources like audiogames.net as much as you can too. Sometimes you
will find the answer to a question faster than asking for it.
Sometimes not. Thing is sometimes it is just good list practice to
look for something as usually it is right there in the archives or
someone like Dark as posted a link on audiogames.net. Phil also has a
great database of games on PCS Games which is another great resource
for finding download links fairly quickly.

I've noticed that seemingly at random, booby traps stop working. I
hit space to activate one and nothing happens. I think this has something
to do with traps not exploding because you can only have 1 trap active at
a time. has anyone experienced this problem and have you found a way to
fix it? thanks

Re: [Audyssey] For those blind gamers who's using a USB controller.

2011-04-08 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Ron,

Well, I wouldn't exactly say you are sunk. Ive done some research
online, and according to Logitech both the F510 and F710 are suppose
to be Windows 7 64-bit compatible. A lot of the issues, according to
their information, are small setup issues.

For example, when using the controller you have to decide if you are
going to use it with DirectInput or XInput. If you do not use the
toggle switch and set it to the correct API it will absolutely not
work correctly on your system.

Second, if you want to use force feedback support there is a button
that enables/disables this feature on the unit. Make sure that this
button is activated when playing games with force feedback support.

Finally, there are technical issues that have nothing to do with the
controller, but with the game you are playing. Most modern PC games
use XInput which is the prefered API for Windows Vista and Windows 7.
However, a lot of older games are still using DirectInput. There seems
to be some issues with games that still use DirectInput, and the
recommendation from Logitech is for developers to upgrade to XInput if
this happens.

Anyway, I don't think you are out of luck. I think what you need to do
is get your hands on an F510 or F710 and make sure it gets installed
and setup properly. By properly I mean that it the switches on the
unit get properly set up for your game and test it with both an
accessible game and perhaps a demo of a mainstream game to see if it
is the controller or game at fault. Most accessible games are not
64-bit compatible and this may be the problem rather than the
controller.
