It's hard to say with Bavisoft. People have had problems with placing
but never receiving orders. And they do work on XP but you have to
download patches for them. And they don't work well on operating
systems after Vista.

Hi all,

As some of you know we have been discussing taking a game like
Piledriver, rewriting it, and then releasing it as open source with
some extra features such as speech, sounds, and maybe even music as
well. Anyway, I've been working on putting together an official
WWF/WWE roster of big name male and female wrestlers from the 1980's.
I.E. in many minds the golden age of WWF/WWE wrestling. I'd like

see in this game.

Re: [Audyssey] Possible WWE Roster

2011-04-11 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Ryan,

Actually, what I am doing is creating two seperate wrestling games
using the same basic engine. The first is a legends based game
featuring only wrestlers from the 1980's like Hulk Hogan, Junkyard
Dog, Randy Savage, Wendi Richter, Sinsational Sharri, Rockin' Robin,
etc. Basically, anyone who was really popular when I was growing up
with wrestling. This one brings back a lot of personal nostalgia as I
not only watched wrestling on television, but my dad and I actually
went and watched several matches live when they were being held at the
Ritchfield Coliseum in Cleveland Ohio. There's nothing quite like
actually being there in person munching down popcorn, drinking soda,
while watching the matches live and in person. If you only watched
wrestling on television that's one thing, but quite another to be
sitting there when you hear the speakers blaring I'm A Real American
as Hulk Hogan makes his way out to the ring with the crowd litterally
screaming so loud your ears hurt for days afterward.

Anyway, basically I haven't forgotten Stone Cold Steve Auston, Trish
Stratus, The Rock, or anyone who became popular in the late 90's and
into the early 2000's. I just feel that they require a separate game.
To me that's a totally different era of wrestling in part because
that's when I lost my sight and I've never felt the same way about
wrestling again. For instance, Trish Stratus came to the WWE just
after I lost my sight, and I was in college then. Everybody told me
she was extremely hot looking, especially in the bra and panties
matches they had, but I couldn't really fully enjoy it since I
couldn't see it. I did my fair share of chearing her on when she won
the women's championship, but like I said although I still listen to
wrestling I also get extremely frustrated that the comontators assume
you can see what is happening and leave out alot of things I use to be
able to see before. The diva's matches especially have lost their
apeal since the main reason I use to watch women like Wendi Richter
and Rockin' Robin wrestle is because they were really nice looking
women and every guy I know of likes to see a good looking woman in
little more than a bathing suit.

Anyway, basically the point I was getting at is that like most people
who has suffered any kind of tramatic loss I separate my life into
before and after. Anything from the late 70's, 1980's, and early 90's
is before my blindness. Everything after including a lot of the
wrestlers you mentioned are after. I can't see someone like Rockin'
Robin wrestling Trish Stratus anyway as she retired from wrestling in
the mid 1990's as I recall. Then, as we've mentioned on list a lot of
people who I grew up watching in the 80's the Junkyard Dog,
Sensational Sherri, Andre the Giant, Hawk, etc are dead now and can't
compete against younger wrestlers from a realistic point of view to
begin with. We'd pretty much have to strike any wrestler who died from
the list in order to make it work.

HTH

Re: [Audyssey] Possible WWE Roster

2011-04-11 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,

Yeah, well, the Undertaker has been in wrestling quite a while.
Definitely was there long before I lost my sight, I'd say the late
80's, and I must say he used to creep me out looking at him on WWF
wrestling. Even the look in his eyes as he looked at the camera was
sinister. Lol!

Let's just say he was one of the heels you loved to hate. He was so
creepy you wanted someone like Hulk Hogan to take him on just to beat
the crap out of him. Maybe then he wouldn't be so creepy.

Speaking of the Undertaker I just had a match in Piledriver with the
Ultimate Warrior vs the Undertaker. Oh, was that one tough match. In
fact, it ended in a draw. I've got to play again to see if I can
actually pin the creep. He gave the Ultimate Warrior the fight of his
life though.

Cheers!

[Audyssey] my first gameplay recording: pipe2

2011-04-11 Thread NIcol
Hi all
I've done a pipe2 blast chamber game play recording long ago where I chat
along the way but I only now noticed I haven't uploaded it.
Enjoy and let me know how you think I can improve the sound quality.
http://www.sendspace.com/file/qrcvgq
I will in the near future do a classic pipe with chat recording for you.
Happy gaming.
p.s Because I suffer from a mental illness, I am no longer able to perform
contract work. At this stage, I have to stay with my mom.
She looks after me as I cannot cope on my own due to the mental illness I
suffer. .And I just have to obey the house rules my mom set even if I
disagree .I'm not aloud to play pipe2 in her house as she view it as violent
although I differ. She launched the game herself and just from the starting
music, she decides that the game has the same contents as the lyrics of
heavy metal music. For some reason she didn't notice the manual which would
give her information on the game itself. She didn't want to believe me when
I told her it's a plumbing game. So I would only be able to play pipe2 again
after my mom passes away some day.
Don't get me wrong, I do not at all wish for her to pass away.
In contrary, I will mourn her death as I so dearly love her and she does a
lot for me; its just some house rules I don't agree with. but the day she
passes away then nobody will be left to make house rules such as:
No pipe2.

Re: [Audyssey] Possible WWE Roster

2011-04-11 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Thomas,

That's a really great! WWE Roster that you put together.

I've got just a couple that maybe you could add.

Chief Jay Strongbow; who had a tag team partner, but I forget who it was.
Rocky Johnson
Tony Atlas
Hillbilly Jim.
Jessy the body Ventura.

Tag teams

The moon dogs
and
Rocky Johnson and Tony Atlas

And if you are going to have managers;

Jimmy mouth of the south Hart
Bobby the brain Heenhen
Lou Albanno
Cindy Lopper

Sorry about spellings, I just made them sound right with Eloquence.

Hello Thomas, Philip and Kelly, this is very upsetting to see that a beta
tester would leak an unfinished product on the internet. Nourmally if you
do
something like that you get kicked off of the team, I believe? Personally
if

I were a game developer and a beta tester leaked a game that I was
developing on the internet, I would kick the person off the team and
continue developing as I usually would.

I also aggree with that.
science invasion is not complete by any means.
In fact only completed abandonware games should be released.

Hi Philip,

Yes, I absolutely agree with you and Kelly. That's why it isn't one of
the PB Games titles I host. It is one thing to officially host
something like Tarzan Junior or Dark Destroyer because they are
stable, fully functional games, and I can still play them on Windows 7
without any serious issues. However, Science Invasion is a different
story. Its an incomplete beta, and the few times I tried it I had
issues with it. So I decided then and there not to host it. I didn't
really see any point given that the game was incomplete and was not
exactly finished. Plus the fact the beta was leaked to the public
without your permission makes it just that much more problematic
because what we have is a game that was never suppose to be released
to the public in the first place. Honestly I don't know what is so
great about it that people still want the game knowing that it isn't
finished and is only a beta.

[Audyssey] assistance using hotspot clicker to make a game more accessible.

2011-04-11 Thread alex wallis

Hi list.
I am wondering, are there any people on hear who are familiar with using
hotspot clicker?

I would like to use it to make a game easier to navigate.

the game I would like to use it in connection with is aurora, which
requires a lot of navigating around with the jaws cursor, to click on
very specific parts of the screen,
so I suddenly thought hotspot clicker could be very useful with this
game as I could set up hotspots on the areas I would frequently need to
access.

Setting up the hotspots is easy, however there is a problem with them.
That is, depending on what you click on, hotspots can be moved several
lines down the screen, and so although you can set them up and they work
from one location, if you then try to click them after accessing an area
of the screen, its possible they have moved, and you will click the
wrong tab.
So, I am wondering, does anyone on the list who is familiar with either
hotspot clicker, or jaws scripting no of a way I can set my hotspots up
to take account of them moving around on the screen?
I also thought hotspot clicker could be very useful with other games,
such as the smugglers series from neils bower, and maybe the tv manager
games if they are accessible.

Thanks for any help,
Alex.

 Hi all,
I'm sorry to all of you who already heard about this on audiogames.net,
but thought I should spread the word.
There is a japanese developer who has began to translate all of his games
to english. the first one to see the light of day is called laser
breakout. You have a horizontal grid that will consist from 7 up to 36
blocks. you and a second player (either another friend at the keyboard or
the computer) will be able to fire quite a few different lasers that will
do damage in a localized but powerful fassion or spread across a few
blocks with varying accuracies. the idea is who ever destroys the other
player's blocks wins, though the game can be tied as well. there are 2
modes, normal mode with just the shooting, and action mode which will let
you use abilities such as being able to heal blocks or having the next
 shot not miss.
I personally really enjoy the game, so thought I'd share it here.

Re: [Audyssey] Pipe 3

2011-04-11 Thread dark

Short answer, no there isn't.

As Justin hasn't developed gamesfor a while due I believe to a far more
demanding job I'm not sure if there will be a pipe 3 ever, though bsc have
recently refurbished their website so it's possible they're thinking about
getting back into developement.

Myself though i'd rather see them try something other than another arcade
game sinse we have quite a few of those.

In fact it'd be great if castlequest or the void were pulled out of the
cupboard, though i don't know if this is likely.

Somehow I doubt it. I'd love to see Castle Quest be revived, particularly

Justin's workload and personal life have become too demanding even

Cheers!

I really don't understand why you guys have so many problems. I've
gotten
pretty far in the game, although I haven't beaten it. This is because
the

second boss is giving me some problems. he throws fireballs extremely
quickly and it's real hard to destroy him when things speed up. however
the

enemies themselves aren't all that hard if you have patience and don't
rush

things. you also need to apply some strategy to things as well. for
instance the teleporting enemies. you'd think this is a random thing,
but

you'd be wrong. they only teleport on specific coordinates. which means
that if you stand at a teleport point, an unlimited amount of enemies
can

potentially spawn. you'll kill them, then by simply jumping straight up
and

landing, or just taking a step back then forward, you'll get a bunch
more

to appear. to be honest I find this logic rather flawed and broken since
if

you know there are a bunch of enemy spawn points somewhere, you can
simply
use the jump command to cover some distance and prevent the spawning
from

triggering. . also remember if enemies teleport all around you and you
have

enough bullets, use your machine gun to destroy them in no time. there's
also the shop, don't forget that. so buy some bullets for the machinegun
there. don't bother buying any of the other items since you'll get them
in
large quantities. in every other case just use the sword. you can swing
it
as fast as you want with no penalties so break the space bar to kill
enemies faster lol

Hi Clement,

Well, I'm not sure how to apply it to Battlezone, but I can think of
many mainstream games were if you get hit once you are dead, but it
might take 25 to 50 hits to kill the enemy. Usually, this works by
jumping bullets, ducking attacks, and other evasive maneuvers until
you kill the enemy. Of course, all of this is based on you being able
to see the attack coming in enough time to effectively move out of the
way fast enough. With Battlezone the problem is there is no warning
the attack is coming so you get killed before you can even begin
thinking about moving out of the way.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Pipe 3

2011-04-11 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,

Oh, I definitely don't believe Castle Quest will ever see the light of
day. Not just because of Justin's work load and personal life is too
busy for that type of game, but considering how that game was being
developed. I think we forget Justin paid another developer to write
the game, and when that developer quit he took the source code and
everything with him leaving Justin, AKA BSC, with nothing. Upon
hearing this I offered my services to help but Justin said he was
completely finished with the project. I think he was personally turned
off on the idea of out sourcing his games to third-party developers.
As it was I had just taken over the Alchemy stuff and probably
couldn't have added my full attention to CQ anyway so it probably
wouldn't have worked out in the end.

Cheers!

 game like CQ would require.

Re: [Audyssey] Pipe 3

2011-04-11 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Actually, I don't see it the same way. Getting rid of BSC Games and
bringing everything under one umbrela
www.blindsoftware.com
sounds to me like Justin is not going to be reviving his games and
other projects. It looks to me what Justin is doing is putting all of
his software into a single holding company that will continue to sell
his old software, offer tech support services, etc while at the same
time not really producing anything new. That's what I would do if I
couldn't keep USA Games going and had other software products besides
games to offer the community.

In fact, after I get USA Raceway and Mysteries of the Ancients out of
my hair I do plan to branch out and work on some non-game related
projects I've been developing in my free time. For instance, one
project I've been working on is a clone of Sony Soundforge which will
primarily be for the Linux operating system. Free open source editers
like Audacity are ok, but I've yet not found anything that is
accessible and good as Soundforge Pro for Linux. So I've been working
on a sound studio/editer that will be similar to Soundforge. As far
as weather it will be open source or sold for a small fee I haven't
decided yet.

Another project I have plans to write will be a good accessible OCR
package for Linux. Something like K1000 or Openbook, but will be open
source and can be bundled with Ubuntu etc as part of the installation.
It will wrap speech-dispatcher and be able to do all the things we
expect such as scan and read, flip the pages if you scan them upside
down, etc. That way Linux users such as myself won't be behind when it
comes to specialized OCR technology.

Cheers!

recently refurbished their website so it's possible they're thinking about
 getting back into developement.

Myself though i'd rather see them try something other than another arcade
game sinse we have quite a few of those.

In fact it'd be great if castlequest or the void were pulled out of the
cupboard, though i don't know if this is likely.

 Hi all,
I'm sorry to all of you who already heard about this on audiogames.net,
but thought I should spread the word.

 Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Possible WWE Roster

2011-04-11 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,

You are right. I did forget about good old Hillbilly Jim and Mr. USA
Tony Atlas. As for Jesse the Body by the 1980's he was primarily a
commintator rather than a wrestler. In fact, the only time I recall
seeing Jesse actually wrestle was at the ritchfield Coliseum against
Hulk Hogan.

At the time if you remember correctly everytime Hogan would get into
the ring against an aponent Jesse, as the onscreen heel commintator,
would always have something bad to say about Hogan. Eventually, this
bad mouthing lead Jesse to make a comment about if he could get to
wrestle Hogan he'd kick his butt and he'd be the heavy weight champion
instead of Hogan. This story eventually lead Hogan to accepting
Jesse's challenge and throughout the summer of 1986 there was this
sort of fude between Hogan and Jesse which the Hulkster won of course.
So, yeah, I guess I could add him to the roster although he wasn't
very active throughout the 1980's as a wrestler do to, what I
understand, some injuries sustained in Vietnam and his doctors put him
on medical leave so the WWF got him a job as ring commintator.

As for the managers even though I didn't list them they'll all be
there. Not just Jimmy Hart, Bobby Henan, but I plan to make a
comprehensive list of them. Including the adorable Cindi Lopper who
managed Wendi Richter during the WWF's Rock and Wrestling marketing
campaign.

Now, that's definitely a blast from the past. I don't know if many
people remember this but around 85, 86, and 87 the WWF had its own
Saturday morning cartoon called Hulk Hogan's Rock and Wrestling. It
was a stupid cartoon, but I loved it as a kid. Basically, it had all
the lead faces of the WWF like Hulk Hogan, Wendi Richter, Junkyard
Dog, Superfly Jimmy Snuka, etc formed up as a super secret super hero
team. Aposing them were some of the top heels like the Iron Sheik,
Nicolai Volkoff, the Fabulous Moolah, lead by Roddy Piper as they try
to make crooked deals and do whatever bad guys do. The shows usually
ended with the faces whipping the heels butts inside the square ring.
Very strange cartoon, but it apparently sold WWF tickets as I was
someone who was initially introduced to wrestling through the cartoon,
action figures, and then began watching WWF Prime Time wrestling
because I wanted to see the real people instead of just their cartoon
personas. Lol!

Cheers!

2011-04-11 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Greg,

I can look but I'm pretty sure the four horsemen etc didn't come along
until the early 90's. I know for sure Arn Anderson came to the WWF
before his brother did, and wrestled as part of Bobby Henan's Brain
Busters. So the Four Horsemen was definitely way after that.

Cheers!

 the Four Horseman.

Re: [Audyssey] laser breakout, a relatively new audio game

2011-04-11 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Shane,
I tried the game download in the forum and it works.
I added the game to my games list,
yukionozawa's AudioGames.net Forum.
Home of Laser breakout.
a japanese developer has translated his game to English.
You have a horizontal grid that consists from 7 up to 36 blocks.
you and either another friend at the same keyboard or the computer player,
will be able to fire different lasers that will do damage in a localized but
powerful fassion,

or spread across a few blocks with varying accuracies.
Who ever destroys the other player's blocks wins, though the game can be
tied as well.

there are 2 modes, normal mode with just shooting,
and action mode which lets you use abilities such as healing blocks or
having the next shot not miss.
The way you shoot is you select a block with the arrow keys and hit enter on
the square you want to shoot at.

80's would be alsome.
Is any of the old ECW and NWA and WCW superstars going to be in the

Here is something to think about what about using the wrestlemania and
starcade wrestling rings. If you think about it this game could be the
accessible version of wwe superstars game that just came out.

Look forward to playing this game.

Hi Mich,

That would be the Paul Bearer. He always walked around with that
stupid urn the Undertaker said gave him his super human powers. He
also would hand the Undertaker a plastic bodybag when the Undertaker
won the match and together they would put the defeated aponent in it
and carry him away from the ring. Later in the 90's they replaced the
bodybag gimic with the casket matches. Where the defeated aponent
would be carried away in a casket. It was quite morbid. Lol!

Cheers!

When he says it the second time hold down the up arrow and tap the right
arrow quickly about 5 times.
2 When the vine is on your left just jump straight up.
You need a patch to register it a link to download has been provided.
As I heard it doesn't work I've provided one on the next line.

Hey, Thomas.
Another wrestler you could add to the game is Shawn Michaels. He was
there in the late 80's.
What about Kevin Nash and Scott Hall as well they was theire in the
late 80's as well.
You could add old arenas such as Wrestlemania and Starcade and others.
Being that WWE brought ECW and WCW you could put old wrestlers from
those two companys who was around back then.
Can't wait to play this game.

Cheers!

Fair enough tom I was just attempting to be hopeful.

While I understand the reasons behind Justin's decision, this is I think
quite a shame, in fact this seems a generalized pattern in audio game
developement I've noticed, people come, develope a game or two, but due to
other commitments stop.

there are exceptions of course such as Phil Vlasac and David greenwood, but
I do think it's quite a shame when someone creates something which is a
community favourite then just seems to drop off the radar afterwards for
whatever reason or other.

She looks after me as I cannot cope on my own due to the mental illness I

although I differ. She launched the game herself and just from the starting
music, she decides that the game has the same contents as the lyrics of
heavy metal music. For some reason she didn't notice the manual which would

I told her it's a plumbing game. So I would only be able to play pipe2 again

Don't get me wrong, I do not at all wish for her to pass away.
In contrary, I will mourn her death as I so dearly love her and she does a

Re: [Audyssey] Possible WWE Roster

2011-04-11 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Michael,

Well, I'm personally of two minds about creating an all stars
wrestling game. I guess it really all depends on if you come from a
wrestling purest point of view or not.

What I mean by that is around 1982 Vince McMan officially purchased
the WWF, and then they split off from the National Wrestling Alliance
as an independent wrestling federation. The WWF purchased several
competing wrestling outfits across the U.S. and in Canada which made
them the largest U.S. based wrestling federation on the market. As a
result they began buying up top performers from the AWA and NWA to
fill the roster with the best of the best. That's why they were so
famous in the 1980's.

Anyway, because of the split from the NWA, National Wrestling
Alliance, WWF performers were barred from wrestling NWA performers and
NWA wrestlers were barred from wrestling in the WWF. The only way they
could do that is to quit and sign a contract with the other
federation. As a result these wrestlers were mainly kept separate
through contracts and commercial permotions for one wrestling alliance
or another.

However, this is a game not real life. So such real life contracts and
issues wouldn't necessarily have to be an issue if we aren't going for
a purest type game. There are a number of advantages to opening it up
to all stars from the era rather than just the WWF/WWE.

For one thing you will notice the female wrestlers I have on the list
is extremely short. That's because when the WWF went independant in
1982 they never really built up a large women's devision like the AWA,
NWA, POW, etc had in place. They maybe had 50 top male performers but
only about 10 female performers on the pay roll at a time. To say the
women were under represented in the WWF is an under statement since
there were quite a number of top female performers at the time.

For example, just off the top of my head I can think of Susan Green,
Mad Maxine, Sally the Farmer's Daughter, Holliwood and Vine, Penny
Mitchell, Susan Starr, and so on. Basically, if we would tie into the
NWA, AWA, GLOW, POW, etc we could easily get a large roster of 50
women to wrestle in the game. That would definitely be more fair and
balanced for anyone who might want to play in a women's devision.

Then, as far as male performers there are definitely some living
legends who carved out big names long before they reached the WWF. The
Road Warriors, Hawk and Animal, were definitely kings of the ring
everywhere they went, but never ended up wrestling in the WWF until
the 1990's. Still they were pretty famous in the 80's and helped draw
people to the NWA. Same goes for the Fabulous Freebirds, Midnight
Express, etc. Great tag teams, but often didn't get as publicized
since they weren't in the WWF at the time. So I'd be interested to
hear everyone's thought on this. Should we go with a purest view, just
WWF wrestlers, or expand it to be more generalized across the board
and bring in some top performers from other wrestling promotions too?

Cheers!

Here is something to think about what about using the wrestlemania and
starcade wrestling rings. If you think about it this game could be the
accessible version of wwe superstars game that just came out.
Look forward to playing this game.

Re: [Audyssey] Possible WWE Roster

2011-04-11 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Phil,

Thanks for posting. That was a great article. It didn't say anything I
didn't already know, but it was well written and a good read.

It is kind of funny one of the guys who commented on it mentioned the
AWA figures the AWA had put out in the 1980's to try and compete with
the WWF's rock and wrestling line up. Admitedly I had to laugh at that
because I owned several of those AWA action figures myself plus an
AWA wrestling ring which was better made than the WWF one. It was made
out of wood and no matter how many times you performed body slams,
suplexes, piledrivers, etc that ring didn't break. The WWF ring died
about two weeks after I got it. Hulk Hogan gave King Kong Bundy a body
slam and since the ring was made out of cheap plastic and King Kong
Bundy was an extremely heavy rubber figure his head went right through
it busting a hole in the WWF ring the size of Texas. Lol!

Not only that, but I think the AWA figures were better detailed. I had
a gift set of the Road Warriors and whoever made them did a great job
on details. Not to mention you could actually move there arms and legs
where the WWF figures, at least there 8 inch line up, were just one
rubber molded figure. They had a four inch line up of bendy figures,
but I always thought they were kind of funky looking etc. So the AWA
definitely had them beat as far as toys.

Re: [Audyssey] Pipe 3

2011-04-11 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Charles,

Well, one reason a developer might want to own and operate more than
one site is to simply keep certain types of products separate. I.E.
this company/website just handles games, and another handles screen
readers, OCR programs, etc he/she might be developing/selling, and
another one might be for other projects he/she might be selling. I
agree it makes sense to put it all under one roof/one website, but it
all depends on if the products are connected/related or not.

For example, as I mentioned earlier I'm looking at developing some
software for Linux like a good OCR package that absolutely has nothing
to do with games. That might be a good product, but would look pretty
weird being posted to a website called USA Games Interactive since it
isn't a game. Therefore I might want to start up a separate website
for handling those other products I'm developing that has nothing to
do with USA Games while still maintaining USA Games as a company in
its own right. Make sense?

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Possible WWE Roster

2011-04-11 Thread dark

Hi Tom.

My acquaintance with wrestling sort of stopped in the 90's with the likes of
wwf regulars like Hulk Hogan, Jake the snake robberts, the nasty boys,
sergeant slaughter, the million dollar man etc.

I then sort of lost interest for a good while, though vaguely ran into the
more recent wwe characters like triple H, the big show etc when my brother
started playing the roar ccg (not to mention the rock's films).

If we are talking about a wrestling game, I'd much more prefer something
where I could play some of both my old favourites and some of the newer
characters I've come across together to make up with my somewhat sketchy
wrestling knolidge than something based in a particular time or federation.

I admit though, my acquaintance with wrestling has been sketchy at best, and
usually limited these days to amusing stories of the soap opera type
shenanigans the wrestlers get up to rather than the actual in the ring
action, so all in all it's hardly something I'm really pationate about.

one feature I would like in the game though, is the ability to create my own
wrestler with their own moves and descriptions and then put them up against
some of the wrestlers I know, and I'm not sure if that would be possible if
the game was limited to one era or federation.

hay, it'd let me do what I used to do with wrestling figures of all kinds
(many unknown some wwf and some just figures from other lines who looked
like wrestlers), when I was about ten or eleven, though those also
involved very detailed back stories, a post apocalyptic world and imaginary
mortal combat style fatalities at the end of each match which probably
wouldn't fit in a wrestling game ;D.

Hi Shaun,

Yeah, I know. I've talked to him off list a time or two, and for a
while he was looking into VB .Net and XNA, but decided against it. So
I'm not sure what his plans are regarding games, but his interests
seam to be general apps and PC stuff now days.

I myself have looked into becoming more mainstream that way. For
instance, I'm now heavily involved in the open source movement and I
want to contribute more to it. One thing I've thought about sstarting
up a Linux based company who developes software for Linux, and have
the skills to build and produce my own distribution. There is money to
be had in getting a Linux support license and becoming a Linux tech
support service and developer. Which I would like since I'm less and
less interested in supporting Windows.

 Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Pipe 3

2011-04-11 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Well, to be honest one of the big problems is there is no money in it.
Those of us who are writing games are doing so mainly as a hobby,
pretty much volunteer work, until something better comes along. Guys
like Liam get a new job that automatically takes priority over
L-Works. Dan, as I understand it, got a position with the college he
attended so no longer had time for DanZ Games. Justin ends up pulling
50 hour weeks at work that obviously takes priority over BSC Games.
Even Philip has mentioned if he gets a real job programming Blastbay
Studios is going on the back burner, and he'll release games on an if
and when he can basis. Being in a similar situation myself I can't
blame them for putting a hold on any games in development to work a
real 9 to 5 job.

Not only that but things are different since I started USA Games in
2004. Back then it was pretty much assumed everybody, and I mean just
about everybody, in the VI community was running Windows. Yeah, there
were a few Linux users, perhaps a very small handful of Mac users, but
there were so few you could blow them off as not really worth the time
and energy supporting. That has really changed over the last few
years.

Ever since Apple added Voice Over to Mac OS X more and more VI
computer users are looking at Mac OS as an alternative to Windows.
We've got developers like Cara Quinn who worked on Jedi Quake now
using Mac. We have Josh from Draconis Entertainment who is now a full
time Mac user. I know there are several others over on the Mac
Visionaries list who simply don't use Windows any more, or they
purchased a cheap Netbook to run a few Windows games etc they can't
run on their Mac.

Not only that, but if you haven't been keeping tabs on the Braille
Soft poll Linux is getting a fairly healthy number of votes.Last time
I checked Windows was at around 133 votes, and Linux had 75
votes. That's better than 50% of the votes were cast for Linux alone.
If you put the number of votes for Mac OS and Linux together Windows
holds its own, but it is a very very close thing. So Linux and Mac OS
are definitely growing markets to explore as far as developing
accessible games and other blind friendly products.

As for myself I am pretty much a full time Linux user now. The only
reason I maintain a Windows PC with Windows 7 on it is so I can do my
job, and produce games I can sell to the VI market. Otherwise if it
weren't for those two issues I wouldn't have Windows XP, Vista, or
Windows 7 installed on any of my computers. Everything would be Linux.

However, as you might guess as a developer we now have to decide what
market or markets we want to support. I don't think it is as clear cut
as saying 85% of the blind run Windows so let's write Windows only
software. I am personally in that 15% who don't really use Windows
outside of work so would be ignoring my own platform of choice just to
market my games to satisfy a larger Windows market. I'm not really
happy with that state of affairs, because if I'm writing, developing,
and producing a product it should be able to meet my own
specifications too. I've not been able to really do that as I've had
difficulty coming up with a good cross-platform design that really
works commercially. Given enough time I might be able to do it, but
I've got preorders etc hanging over my head like the fabled sword of
Damocles.

Anyway, even though Windows might be a bigger market commercially
speaking it isn't a market I really prefer to support long term
myself. At least not directly using DirectX, XNA, and all the
Microsoft specific APIs. No, what I've been doing behind the seens
with games like STFC 2.0 is I've adopted an open source design using
LibSDL and C++. I've successfully cross compiled the alpha with the
MingGW compiler so it is certainly possible to create Linux, Mac, and
Windows software, but it can be difficult to do if the game inquestion
is complicated like MOTA. All this extra work developing a game for
Linux, and then making sure it will run on Windows too takes all the
fun and enjoyment out of developing it for me.

Besides that, there are other projects I've been thinking of
developing specifically for Linux I thought would help open the
platform to more Windows users. While there are a number of decent
apps there are areas like OCR, for example, that doesn't quite compare
to Openbook or K1000 I'd like to see someone create. There are a lot
of audio editers like Audacity that are ok, but I haven't found
anything that is 100% comparable to Sony Soundforge Pro. As a musician
I want some quality sound editers like that which would not only help
me personally but anyone else who is a musician, game developer, sound
effects engineer, etc. There are some apps for Linux like Filezilla
which is a good piece of software, but could use someone like myself
to go in and fix some accessibility issues here and there so it would
work better with Orca. Lots of things like that which would improve
access for us and

Hi Hayden,

Yeah, I have to agree with you there. A name like
www.blindsoftware.com
sounds like something APH etc would come up with to promote some
blindness related software. As a company name it is lame as all get

why people want to promote themselves with a name like

Hi,

Right. You don't need the cd. All the discs are used for is
delivering the media to you. I copied my copies of the Bavisoft games
to an external harddrive, and honestly can't remember were the
original discs when to. The time these games were created hard drives
etc were much much smaller. Maybe 20 GB tops. So it makes sense that
you'd want to keep the setup on a physical media like a cd. However,
now days with 2 TB drives keeping cds around sounds a bit silly.

Oh, and no you don't have to modify any ini files. Just copy them to a
directory on your thumb ddrive, external hard drive, click setup, and
install it. No modifications necessary.

The installers in act the entire cd can be coppied, maybe you have to

[Audyssey] lightning reaction: fun... with a twist

2011-04-11 Thread Clement Chou
So I was at a goalball tournament a few weeks ago and one of my
friends brought this thing called lightning reaction. It's a pretty
old novelty and some people probably already know what it is... but
for those who don't... read on.

Lightning reaction isn't a computer game... it's more of a handheld
thing. Not really... since it's four controllers stuck to a base via
wire. Basically, the base is something that looks kinda like an
upside down octopus made of silver plastic, and it has four quote
unquote arms that are atatched via cords to the base. Each of those
arms has a red button... and this game is up to four players. It's
essentially a game to test reflexes and nerves with... turn it on,
select the number of players, and then press the big green button in
the centre of the base. A red light starts to flash, and it's
accompanied by a whaling siren-type thing that sounds like it comes
from an ambulance out of a kid's nightmare. After a random time, the
light will flash green... and at that point it becomes a race to see
who can press their button first. Whoever presses their button last
will get shocked. Litterally. It isn't a strong shock, but it's
enough of one to send a jolt up your arm.. and cause you to leap up
and dance a bit. The reloaded version of the game has two modes...
normal and extreme. In normal mode, only the slowest player gets
shocked. Crank it up to extreme, and everyone other than the winner
gets shocked. It's a great game for a party, and it can be tons of
fun with friends around... I've had a blast with it... and am
planning to buy one in the next day or so. Definitely something to
test your reflexes with, as well as your nerve. For in addition to
the creepy sound.. the timing is random. When the light flashes
green, the sound also stops, giving totally blind people a cue. This
isn't designed for the blind by any means... it's just something I've
found to be a lot of fun and thought I should share. Either way, the
timing on this game is ridiculous... it can be anywhere from 10 to 30
seconds, and waiting for that... with that whaling in the background,
as well as your friends trying to startle you and make you press the
button... definitely an intense experience. Hope this is useful to
someone. lol. Any questions, just ask and I'll do my best to answer.

Re: [Audyssey] A bavisoft question

2011-04-11 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Michael,

No, he can't.

First of all, these are comercial games. That's a direct act of
software piracy. Anyone I catch passing the games around won't just
get moderated they'll be banned from the Audyssey list no ifs, ands,
or butts about it.

Second of all, there is no such thing as Chillingham II. It was
something Bavisoft mentioned creating five or six years ago, but was
never released. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it that's for
sure.

Cheers!
