Re: [Audyssey] Implementing graphic in games with and without sided assistence
Hi Milos, Well, unfortunately, its not quite that simple. There is a lot of reasons why it is challenging or difficult for a blind developer to add graphics to a game, and why most blind developers don't bother with it. First, you need an artest to actually produce the graphics. They have to use a decent graphics program and draw hundreds of images that will get loaded and mixed in real time which we obviously can't do ourselves since we can't see what we are drawing. So that means either hiring someone to do all the art work professionally, or finding a friend who is good at drawing to do the work for free. Either way you'll certainly have to have someone sighted for this first important step. Second, you have to decide upon a good high quality API to render graphics. Right now the two leading graphics APIs are Direct3D and OpenGL. Each has advantages and disadvantages depending on various technical issues I'm not going to get into at this moment. Third, there is a huge amount of math involved in rendering graphics in real time. I happen to know most blind developers are amateurs and really don't have the college level math involved in doing 3d graphics. At the very minimum you need an extensive knowledge in calculous, and if you don't have that kind of math background you can forget it. You are not going to be able to create a math engine that can do serious 3d real time calculations and render the graphics correctly. Finally, assuming you actually manage to write said game and over come issues one through three you will still have to have someone beta ttest this thing who can see. One of the graphics might not be rendered or displayed correctly, maybe because you couldn't see that you mixed the rong graphics together or drew them to the screen in the wrong place, etc. I hate to shoot your ideas down in flames, but the fact of the matter is graphics programming is extremely complex and isn't for amateurs. There are books on this subject that will give you an introduction to the subject, might get you started on the right path, but if you are serious about this you'll have to find a sighted partner. You can't do it completely on your own if you are blind. As for myself I think it would be great to add graphics, but I'd have to higher an artest just to get started. Then, the way my programs work would have to be totally rewritten to handle a high speed graphics engine which is totally different than the way my games work. For instance, I often pause the game in certain places to help make it possible to hear menus, status messages, whatever. Well, if you are dealing with graphics you can't afford to add such pauses, because normal video games do not pause or freeze waiting for the blind player to listen to the world around him/her. Plus most vidio games operate at a speed of 60 frames per second or so where I think MOTA runs at 40 frames per second or something like that. In terms of video game graphics my internal game speed is extremely slow. Too slow for streaming video, but just fine for audio. See the problem? Re: [Audyssey] Implementing graphic in games with and without sidedassistence
You could probably do versions of it, since for certain types of games, you'd just be moving shapes around, and for some types of more detailed games, you sort of plot coordinates for objects/shapes, but I really don't know too much about real graphics development as such, but, my silly, old snakes and ladders which talked, also included original snakes and ladders board layout, and smiley face characters, along with SAPI TTS - sort of to provide any sighted person with an idea of what the TTS output was rendering a version of. Either way, for real graphics, you'd at least need to be able to visualise what you were trying to render - but on the other hand, 3D is still somewhat of a tactile sense... Re: [Audyssey] rs games
Hi, 2 comments. The bug where you were talking about when your about to by a property and, it's still on the roll dice menu, usually I have to hit escape twice to get it back to where I need it. As for the noises being to loud, and saving your settings after you, lets say turn the music down, that was actually brought up on that list a while back. I hope in a newer version of the client they will implement that. Because I personally would like to turn down the music in Yatsy. - Original Message - From: "Richard Sherman" To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Tuesday, April 19, 2011 6:42 PM Subject: [Audyssey] rs games Hi, Recently had two problems with the downloadable version of the rs game client software. I have emailed them, but no response. So that is why I am asking here. 1. I've had the game freeze up on me 3 different times. One time was on a monopoly board. I was playing against 2 bots when it was a bots turn. The bot was putting houses on a property when it froze up. I left the table, came back in and it was still froze up. I eventually had to quit the game. The other two times was while playing black jack. I was playing with another person. We put our bets on the table, and the dealer never dealt. When the other person stood up, it kicked me off the table. We went back in and started playing again when it froze up again in the same situation. 2. This problem is in the monopoly game. This particular nuisance I have not written to RS games about, but thought I would post it here. The problem is a focus issue. I am playing the rs games on a windows 7 32 bit machine running jaws 12. The problem arises when the appropriate window does not have focus. For instance, you just rolled doubles. You move to a property you want to buy. But instead of being able to buy it, the roll menu is in focus. You have to roll again before the option to buy the property is available. So you end up buying the property after you have already rolled again. Or, a more major problem is when you are managing assets, and you hit enter on a property to build houses, mortgage, etc, many times it will lose focus. You hit buy house, it builds the house. But then dumps you back to the roll menu. You go back to manage assets, select the property, select build house, and it says invalid. The reason it is invalid is that the other two menu selections windows are still open and causing it to be invalid. So one has to jump through many hoops for it to gain focus on those open windows and get them closed before proceeding. Sometimes this has taken me many minutes to just build a couple of houses. I've even exited and logged back on to clear this up. Quite, quite annoying. There also has been instances where after my turn was over, I could press the up or down arrow key and windows would be there. Hitting enter on the appropriate item will cause that window to disappear. I've even gotten to roll when it wasn't my turn because of these ghost windows. Has anyone else experienced these problems or annoyances? How did you resolve them. BTW, does anyone think the sounds are too loud? I only have one sound card for both jaws and any other sounds. The main sound that plays when selecting a game or table is too loud and must be turned down in order to hear the selections. The background sounds that play during game play many times overwhelms jaws and I have to wait for it to stop playing in order to continue. I think that once the volume for the primary sound is set, this setting should be saved in the game so that the next time the game launches or you switch tables, it doesn't go back to full volume. I've always maintained that it is a bit unrealistic to include someone to the roster who passed away, and therefore couldn't realistically wrestle on any current roster. I know THQ, who produces most of the WWE games, had a similar issue when Chris Benoit died. They were about to release an update to their WWE Raw VS Smackdown game when he was murdered. In the end they decided to just remove his character completely from the game, and took him off the roster of playable characters. Some people objected to that, and others felt THQ made the right call. I'm finding myself in a similar situation now. No matter what I do its going to be the wrong decision for somebody. Hi Jim, I know the feeling, and exactly were you are coming from on that issue. I don't think user's quite get that adding editable text files adds loads of tech support time and energy to a product just because somewhere somehow someone will goof when editing them, and we get the blame for it not working right. I'd just prefer to hard code that data and not do all the extra work of reading a text file into memory, and then correctly passing that information off to the correct object or variable. Re: [Audyssey] jim kitchen's nfl football
Hi Jim, That makes sense. I have sometimes pulled off a first down by a short pass offense or a long pass offense so it makes complete sense that is exactly what the aposing team would do if they are on a third down and 12 yards to go. Those are long odds, but they can be b beaten with a successful pass. So the most likely defence is to try and block the pass or intercept it. Re: [Audyssey] Wrestling Game Updates/Decisions
Hi Dark, I was pretty much thinking of determining that based on number of wins and losses. If you are wrestling for the raw brand and want a title shot at the WWE championship you are going to have to wrestle everybody else on Raw until you are the top contender for the Miz's title. Same goes for Smackdown. If wrestling for Smackdown you'll have to wrestle everyone else on Smackdown so that you can be the top contender for the world championship. Diva's of course work a bit different since the title holder can either be from the Raw or Smackdown brand. So it doesn't really matter which brand you wrestle for in that case because the Diva's championship passes to and from Raw and Smackdown all the time. Legends like diva's aren't asigned to any brand or promotion and choose any title shot they want. Does that make sense? Of course, there is a problem with this. If you want to play the Miz, and he is the default WWE champion, then your position would be as defender of the title rather than someone trying to wrestle for a title shot. So that would offset the wins/losses rules somewhat. I'm not sure how to handle that issue. Perhaps vacate all titles and wrestle for them via tournaments? I guess I'll find out soon as last week on Smackdown Edge announced he had to retire do to medical reasons. Since he was the current world heavy-weight champion that title is now open and vacated for anyone to take. I imagine they'll have some sort of tournament match in the next ppv for the top contenders to battle it out for that title. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Multiple Names for Wrestlers
Hi, The reason is it wouldn't work. Just adding names to a text file wouldn't really work, because its not just the names that change. As I explained earlier on list when these wrestlers change there identities they often change their signature moves, change their finishers, change their alliance, change their outfits, and generally their personality too. For example, Mick Foley who I mentioned earlier on list. As Cactus Jack he played a heel who was suppose to be a wild texan with a hard core fighting style that included foreign objects like barbed whire, two-by-fours, and a number of moves specific to Cactus Jack. After he joined the WWF Mick Foley created a totally new persona called Mankind. Unlike Cactus Jack Mankind was suppose to be a mentally disturbed individual who lived in boiler rooms, talked to rats, and supposably had a split personality as well. Instead of the barbed wire and big Texan persona of Cactus Jack Mankind's most memorable feature is his sock puppet, Socko, that added comity to his interviews. Plus after Mankind won a match he use to stick a dirty sock in the defeated aponents mouth which was funny. The weirdest part of Mankind was his split personality where he'd talk to himself in the voice of Mankind and then change to Dude Love and back again. It was as different from Cactus Jack as you could get. Mankind was a completely different character with his own unique moves and fighting style. So just changing his name means nothing unless you are ready to update the character profile in earnest. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Multiple Names for Wrestlers
Hi Jacob, Well, unfortunately Eddie Guerrero died a few years back which brings up another issue I've been wondering how to handle. That is some of these wrestlers have passed away either through drug over doses, murder, or some other kind of accident. However, this is in part made up for a custom wrestler feature so if I don't include a wrestler someone really wants because he or she passed away they can add him/her to the unofficial roster. Re: [Audyssey] USA Blackjack
Not sure, but I would think that if there is a slight separation between the action sound and the readout, there should be no problem as long as the readout is louder than the sound of the cards being dealt, which should be a softer sound, anyway. --- Laughter is the best medicine, so look around, find a dose and take it to heart. - Original Message - From: "Phil Vlasak" To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Tuesday, April 19, 2011 6:31 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] USA Blackjack Hi Thomas, I think the people that want no card sounds, ask this for the same reasons some do not want dice rolling sounds in the GMA dice roller. A sighted person can see a turned up card as soon as it is dealt. [Audyssey] rs games
Hi, Recently had two problems with the downloadable version of the rs game client software. Ah Tom, your obviously not familiar with business practice, anything you like is automatically unproductive, in fact that's a basic tennit of capitalism. Sinse an agility scroll would also increase the amount of stuff you like which you could do, well that wouldn't be good business would it! Fair enough Tom. I was just wondering how your going to distinguish a bottom level wrestler from a more advanced one other than by some sort of training or level system, and also how you'll insure that your wrestler can't just go streight to the top of the wrankings in the first fight. Re: [Audyssey] Multiple Names for Wrestlers
tom this is just a thought. But why not write a database maybe a text file with all the names in it or whatever. maybe have sertain headings, etc. If people want to update the database or if you care to then it will not be a problem. Ofcause you will have to have it easy enough that people could put it in notepad. I don't imagine it would have to be that much. At 02:39 a.m. 20/04/2011, you wrote: Hi everyone, This morning while writing down notes for my wrestling games I just realized there might be a potential problem in the offing with some of these wrestlers. That is that many of these guys often changed their ring names several times throughout there career. Especially, when changing promotions. For instance, current "hard core legend" Mick Foley. Those of you who watch TNA would know him as Mick Foley. That's the current name the guy is using on screen. However, those of us, like myself, who have been around know him by a string of past career names that include Cactus Jack, Jack Foley, Dude Love, Mankind, Mick Foley, etc. This is a problem for a game author like myself who can only pick one name and move set for this person. The problem is further compounded I think when we are dealing with people who don't know that Cactus Jack, Mankind, Dude Love, and Mick Foley are the same guy. I can see potential questions like, "why don't you add Cactus Jack to the game?" Then, I would have to reply he is in the game, but he is using a different alias like Mick Foley. This could become quite confusing for gamers I think. Any suggestions how to handle this? And before someone mentions it let me just say I'm not writing a game editor. That's too much work, too much of a pain, and the game is open source anyway. My feeling is since it is open source, you get the source code, it is your option to edit and recompile the game however you want. This really negates any need for an external editor in my personal opinion. In either case weather or not there is an editor there has to be a way to determine or decide which name should get used in the default roster. My vote is simply to use the most current name used by the wrestler, or the one directly used by the WWE. That to me makes sense because the game would be more or less up to date as far as the wrestler's career goes. In some cases I realise it is a no brainer what name should get used. For example, recently retired world heavy wait champion, Edge, had a number of less well known names before signing onto the WWE roster in the late 90's. Once he became a WWE wrestler Alex Copeland would forever be known to his fans as Edge. As I said in a case like that its a clear cut case of what name to use. All you say makes sense, so good luck on trying to decide what will work best... FWIW, in even my old sighted days, my favourites of all time were the Undertaker, his brother Kane - who often enough was on the other side - and another, less famous guy, Eddie Guerrero - who always made his entrance in a flashy type car - who's cousin is the little one - Ray Mysterio Junior. These things happen all the time in professional wrestling and really all depends on the story and circomstances of the promotion at the time, and what wrestling federation he/she is wrestling for. It makes writing an all stars wrestling game complicated because rolls change from year to year and week to week. They showcase the top performers for that year, and your matches are played out using the actual site locations as WWE Raw and Smackdown for that specific year. If a performer is a heel at the time the game is made he/she is a heel. If they turn face the next year they will return in the new game as a face character. Although, the games will allow you to change his/her status in game as well. To be honest this is exactly what I was planning to do before people began bombarding me into the ground for this or that wrestler to be in the game. It is alot easier to take the top 20 performers of the year and write a game around their stories than it is to add 100 wrestlers in the game and have to waid through different identities, storylines, and decide which one will make the cut or just get the boot. Re: [Audyssey] USA Blackjack
Hi Thomas, I think the people that want no card sounds, ask this for the same reasons some do not want dice rolling sounds in the GMA dice roller. The sound takes between 2 and 3 seconds to play and some do not want to wait that long to get a result. Others such as the hard of hearing can not hear the dice roll sound well. As the dice roller is totally self-voicing, they need to hear the result, but they can turn up the volume if necessary. Re: [Audyssey] Multiple Names for Wrestlers
Hi Tom, Yes, I have a suggestion that can be implemented well into the game without much work, that we can see in Tournament. When you choose a wrestler you can have an info option or something like that, that would display something about the wrestler. So you can have a wrestler with his current alias and in the info tell the gamer that he had previous ones and what they were. Best regards! Milos Przic msn: milos.pr...@gmail.com skype: Milosh-hs - Original Message - From: "Thomas Ward" To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Tuesday, April 19, 2011 4:39 PM Subject: [Audyssey] Multiple Names for Wrestlers Hi everyone, This morning while writing down notes for my wrestling games I just realized there might be a potential problem in the offing with some of these wrestlers. However, others like Mick Foley have had so many names over the last 20 years or so it is hard for me to pick. Any thoughts? Re: [Audyssey] Wrestling Game Updates/Decisions
Hi Shane, One problem with your ring announcer idea though. You do realise if we go forth with this idea we have to scrap the idea of a custom wrestler mode. This is something I know Dark would really miss, and I know others would miss it as well. That's one reason I wasn't initially going to do an official ring announcer. That would be alright if we were doing a game like Raw vs Smackdown were you know only those wrestlers will be in the game, but if you ever plan to update or add wrestlers you have to add custom ring announcements etc too. Hi Jason, You know though, if it is like third down and over a dozen yards I would highly recommend the short pass defense. They may get a few yards with a run, but almost never enough for a first down in that situation. And yeah, the blitz can work great, but like if they run a screen pass and complete the pass, he can be gone for a touch down from 99 yards away. You know because everyone is in on the blitz and no one is left to cover the player who catches the pass. Hi Jason, No, sorry, but the team names are hard coded into my game. So there is no text file or anything like that that you can change to change the names of the teams in the game. I could do that if I ever do release a new version of the game. Hi Thomas, I did not know how to detect or trap the alt f4 key combination until recently, so only maybe one of my games has the VB6 Private Sub Form_QueryUnload(Cancel As Integer, UnloadMode As Integer) So none of my games are going to do all of the cleaning memory etc if one uses the alt f4 to exit the game. Plus they will not then go back to my kitchensinc game menu system as they are designed to do. So I ought to go back and rewrite every one of my 30 game titles and add the Private Sub Form_QueryUnload(Cancel As Integer, UnloadMode As Integer) as well as all of the other better ways that I have learned this past decade to use sapi5 speech, DirectX direct sound and direct input. Re: [Audyssey] Wrestling Game Updates/Decisions
Hi Dark, Yeah, basically what I'm thinking of doing is using a stats system similar to an RPG game were each wrestler has basic stats like agility, strength, endurance, luck, whatever that determines how much of a beating he or she can stand before they can be pinned or submit to a submission hold or how much of a beating they can dish out to an an aposing wrestler. Something like strength is pretty self-explanitory. How much strength a wrestler has will help him/her pull off body slams, suplexes, and any other takedown that requires upper body strength. Somebody like Hulk Hogan obviously has a high strength rating as he has a proven record of slamming big monsters like Andre the Giant, King Kong Bundy, and Big Show. Guys wwith weight well over 400 pounds plus. However, not everyone has that high a strength rating and somebody like Jim Duggan might not be able to pull off a body takedown like a slam and will have to resort to agility and use somethinglike a single leg takedown or double leg takedown to try and use the wrestler's weight against him to drop him/her to the matt.In other words use moves like leg takedowns and arm drags that work against the person you are wrestling because the heavier he/she is the easier his/her weight will count against them. So this stats system will definitely add a strategy element to your game. Then, each wrestler will have a skill set. There are a handful of basic skills such as arial, brawling, dirty, submission, technical, etc that will determine what kinds of moves your wrestler can do. For example, If your wrestler is a face, a good guy, his dirty skill rating will either be 0 or very low. Meaning if you try a dirty move you might end up getting disqualified from a match, because face wrestlers aren't suppose to cheet. However, if you are playing a heel, a bad guy, he might have a high dirty skill rating and can get away with chokes, eye pokes, face rakes, or using a foreign object as a weapon when the reff's attention is focussed on the manager or somewhere else but the match. That's cheating, but that's usually how heel wrestlers play. They play dirty and mean. However, in the main you'll want to select a skill set of legal moves you can use often. Someone like "Macho Man" Randy Savage is an arial fighter. His trademark skills are areial type moves like flying elbos, knees off the second rope, flying dropkicks, are legendary in the WWE. So if you were playing Randy Savage his highest skills would be in the arial/high flying moves. Of course, they are high risk moves because if the aponent isn't stunned before you try a move like that those moves can backfire by landing on the matt face first with nobody home, land on a guys raised knees, or get caught in mid air and body slammed to the matt for your effort. That's exactly what happened in Wendi Richter's title match with Lani Kai. For example, in the now legendary 1985 Wrestlemania match between women's champion, Lani Kai, and challenger, Wendi Richter, Lani Kai made a huge tactical mistake in the ring. She thought Wendi Richter was stunned, so she climbed to the top rope, and tried to pull off her trademark move, the flying splash, and it backfired. While in mid air Wendi Richter caught Lani, and used her own momentum to turn her flying splash into a huge powerslam to the mat. While she was stunned Wendi Richter pinned Lani Kai and won the WWF Women's championship for the second time. So that's an example of how a high risk arial move can go horrably wrong in the heat of action before you know what hit you. As I said before this game will definitely require stratagey. You have to learn how to play to your wrestler's advantages, skills, without ending up like poor Miss Lani Kai in the process. If you are playing an arial fighter you might want to have a secondary skill like brawling just to beat down the aponent, wear them out, before trying any kind of high risk arial moves. Cheers!
