Hi I've noticed when I play TJS and, set a new record it gives the wrong
date. However, when I go to c:\program files\kitchensinc\tjslog.txt, it has

Maybe Shaun's onto something. My comparrison was probably unfair,
seeing as A) I'm judging a Macbook trackpad with plenty of surface
area and a really nice finish to the touch against the cheapest of
cheapo mice and B) I'm a sucker for not having extra devices whenever
possible. I'd love to give a good gaming mouse a go though.

Re: [Audyssey] Problem with buildings in swamp

2012-05-10 Thread Dakotah Rickard
What about a way to raise and lower the different sound effect
volumes, rather than through keys but through the menus. That way, you
could raise and lower the different footstep sounds, raise and lower
the weapon volume sounds, raise and lower voice file sounds, music
tracks, and even radar sounds. That would free up keyboard spaces, and
it would make the options more customizable.

Re: [Audyssey] Ambience in Swamp

2012-05-10 Thread Dakotah Rickard
I think that any sounds that directly impact atmospheric stuff:
weather, day/night, etc. are a bad idea, unless they will be updated
to reflect the various conditions. That could be fun. As far as
doorway aids, what about the fact that the doors are probably broken,
swinging, etc. That's a possibility, if its necessary to use sounds
for navigation, that's an option. Frankly, I understand that I am an
odd duck, but I rarely use coordinates or beacons and I navigate fine.
It's just memorizing the maps.

[Audyssey] Gamebooks was Inspector Cindy mystery games.

2012-05-10 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Dark,

To be honest I'm not too surprised about that. Paper and pen gamebooks
were fun back in the day when they were popular, and I think this
generation has forgotten that low tech games like gamebooks can be just
as entertaining as the flashiest video game on the market. I['m
rediscovering that fact myself.

Although, its not technically a gamebook per say I do remember spending
hours of time reading and rereading the Choose your Own Adventure books
that were popular in the 80's. Like a gamebook it took several times
through the book before I discovered all the possible endings, and all
the variations on the same story. I spent many hours in my bedroom with
the lamp switched on reading through those books. I think I had at least
twenty of those books on my bookcase. :D

Gamebooks were just as fun, if not more so, because as you went through
the story you could roll dice to determine something random in the game,
and then write down your progress on a sheet of paper much like a person
does in a table top roll playing game. Sure, it is very low tech, but
they were quite fun and didn'trequire an expensive computer or special
console to play. You and a friend could sit at the kitchen table playing
those gamebooks all day long taking turns reading the story and rolling
stats etc.

Lately I've been getting back into interactive fiction as well as
gamebooks in part because they are some of the games that are playable
on Linux, but I've rediscovered how fun and entertaining they are. I can
sit at my laptop on a quiet evening, fire up my web browser, read the
gamebook with my screen reader, take notes in my favorite text editer,
and roll dice with a simple dice rolling program. More importantly than
the simplicity of such games is that I feel connected to the story and
game world. Everything is describede in some detail from the large
wooden door at the end of the hall with a brass plate on it to the
burning candle or torch in the holder on the wall. Its the closest
we'll ever get to videogame graphics, and since we can't see pictures
having a detailed text description at least gives us the sensation of
sight, touch, and smell.

I think any sighted user would enjoy it to, because they can imagine in
their head what this or that might look like. Instead of looking at a
graphic of the thing it forces or allows them to use their mind to fill
in the image. ALayering extra sensations like touch and smell helps
complete the picture and makes the game more lifelike. Plus if they are
a big reader like me having a good story and being able to interact with
its outcome is a big bonus.

Cheers!

On 5/9/2012 7:18 PM, dark wrote:

Hi Tom.
I'll also add that interestingly enough, there's something of a
gamebook revival going on at the moment. All the classical original
fighting fantasy books are being reprinted, as are new editions of the
Lone wolf books with extra content, though sadly I've not heard
anything of electronic versions.

On the plus side, there are various companies writing gamebook aps for
the Iphone. One of these, starbreed I know to have access problems
annoyingly, but there are several others, see the links on
www.arborell.com for details, which is one reason why I'm myself very
keen to try an iphone, sinse I'm a huge fan of that style of game, and
intend to do more serious writing of them myself as and when my phd is
finished.

Beware the grue!

Re: [Audyssey] Lone Wolf was Game Recordings

2012-05-10 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Charles,

True. In there own way the first 17 missions were like training
missions. A person needs it to take on some of the user created
missions. Need I mention my own created missions require a lot of skill. :D

However, one of my faves is mission 21 or 22 where you have to navigate
up the river and take out the damn. Its one of David Lants missions, and
it is a darn good mission. Getting around those blasted mines is a
really tight squeeze. Then, when you get near enough to smoke the damn
you have a battleship right there ready to waist you. Although, I
usually waist him first. Lol!

On 5/9/2012 11:42 PM, Charles Rivard wrote:
What I noticed about the 17 missions that come with the game is that
each one builds off of previously learned skills. Mission 1? Aiming

Re: [Audyssey] kitchensinc games...problem

2012-05-10 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Johnny,

A new sapi5? Not sure what that means, but may I ask, do the sapi5 voices work
like in the control panel and or with any other applications? They are not the
real speak voices that come with JFW right?

Below are all of the fixes that I know of for the sapi5 speech.

The first thing that I would try would be the DelUserLex.exe file that you can
find on my free windows sapi5 text to speech games page, as well as on the GW
Micro and Freedom Scientific sites. It is a strange file in that it doesn't
say or seem to do anything, but it did fix my sapi5 voices.

Here is another fix that I was told about.
Go to c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Speech
Then, press enter on Sapisvr.exe. It won't say anything, but it should
correct the control panel entries for Sapi.

Another thing that you can do is to use the Windows XP restore feature to
restore your computer back to a date when the voices were working.

And then there is to use your Windows XP cd to repair the entire sapi5 text to
speech engine.

you can download (SpeechSDK51MSM.exe).
which contains all of the Microsoft Sapi voices available for Windows XP from

Hi Charles,

True. In there own way the first 17 missions were like training missions.
A person needs it to take on some of the user created missions. Need I
mention my own created missions require a lot of skill. :D

However, one of my faves is mission 21 or 22 where you have to navigate up
the river and take out the damn. Its one of David Lants missions, and it
is a darn good mission. Getting around those blasted mines is a really
tight squeeze. Then, when you get near enough to smoke the damn you have a
battleship right there ready to waist you. Although, I usually waist him
first. Lol!

Re: [Audyssey] Gamebooks was Inspector Cindy mystery games.

2012-05-10 Thread dark
Agreed tom, though judging from what is happening with current publications
I don't think it's the case that people are forgetting about actual paper
books.

it's actually slightly annoying from an access perspective, sinse currently
all of the lone wolf books with extra content are being republished, as are
the original fighting fantasy series, however the companies involved aren't
making electronic (or accessible), versions available, and those are really
the land mark series.

On the Iphone however, a lot of newer gamebook authors are starting up
series as applications, not associated with the originals. Hopefully in the
future this might lead flying buffalow or mongoose publishing to the idea of
electronic versions of the classic books, but possibly not (not with the way
the current publishing industry is desperate to keep publishing off the
internet).

Either way though, it's extremely good gamebooks are coming back in, and I
fully intend to explore options when i get an Iphone.

In the mean time of course, there are still the extremely good stuff on the
net such as chronicles of arborell, the ff project and project aon.

Hi Dark,

To be honest I'm not too surprised about that. Paper and pen gamebooks
were fun back in the day when they were popular, and I think this
generation has forgotten that low tech games like gamebooks can be just as
entertaining as the flashiest video game on the market. I['m rediscovering
that fact myself.

Although, its not technically a gamebook per say I do remember spending
hours of time reading and rereading the Choose your Own Adventure books
that were popular in the 80's. Like a gamebook it took several times
through the book before I discovered all the possible endings, and all the
variations on the same story. I spent many hours in my bedroom with the
lamp switched on reading through those books. I think I had at least
twenty of those books on my bookcase. :D

Gamebooks were just as fun, if not more so, because as you went through
the story you could roll dice to determine something random in the game,
and then write down your progress on a sheet of paper much like a person
does in a table top roll playing game. Sure, it is very low tech, but they
were quite fun and didn'trequire an expensive computer or special console
to play. You and a friend could sit at the kitchen table playing those
gamebooks all day long taking turns reading the story and rolling stats
etc.

Lately I've been getting back into interactive fiction as well as
gamebooks in part because they are some of the games that are playable on
Linux, but I've rediscovered how fun and entertaining they are. I can sit
at my laptop on a quiet evening, fire up my web browser, read the gamebook
with my screen reader, take notes in my favorite text editer, and roll
dice with a simple dice rolling program. More importantly than the
simplicity of such games is that I feel connected to the story and game
world. Everything is describede in some detail from the large wooden door
at the end of the hall with a brass plate on it to the burning candle or
torch in the holder on the wall. Its the closest we'll ever get to
videogame graphics, and since we can't see pictures having a detailed text
description at least gives us the sensation of sight, touch, and smell.

I think any sighted user would enjoy it to, because they can imagine in
their head what this or that might look like. Instead of looking at a
graphic of the thing it forces or allows them to use their mind to fill in
the image. ALayering extra sensations like touch and smell helps complete
the picture and makes the game more lifelike. Plus if they are a big
reader like me having a good story and being able to interact with its
outcome is a big bonus.

Cheers!

Hi Tom.
I'll also add that interestingly enough, there's something of a gamebook
revival going on at the moment. All the classical original fighting
fantasy books are being reprinted, as are new editions of the Lone wolf
books with extra content, though sadly I've not heard anything of
electronic versions.

On the plus side, there are various companies writing gamebook aps for
the Iphone. One of these, starbreed I know to have access problems
annoyingly, but there are several others, see the links on
www.arborell.com for details, which is one reason why I'm myself very
keen to try an iphone, sinse I'm a huge fan of that style of game, and
intend to do more serious writing of them myself as and when my phd is
finished.

Re: [Audyssey] Showdown

2012-05-10 Thread dark

Hi john.

the game is still being hosted I believe by tom ward. Go and check out the
database entry for it on www.audiogames.nett and you'll find it there, along
with a download link.

It's actually an extremely well put together game, in the way the ball
bounces and things are tracked, i think Philip worked the rules and physics
out to make it surprisingly challenging, simple though it is.
