Re: [Audyssey] saitek pro flight system?
Hi. If your looking at a unique control system for games, I'd recommend looking at Aprone's Sea monkey head tracker device which already works with swamp and will in the future work with more games. http://www.kaldobsky.com/audiogames/ Personally for me, I'm not against audiogames using new control methods, indeed I've enjoyed both the use of the mouse and the use of things like gyro and analogue control on Ios, however if! people are to shell out money for a control system it must do something that the keyboard can't. I was never a fan of joy pads, I always preferd a propper arcade style stick, however sinse I don't have one for pc, I've come to get used to the keybaord for standard press button application in control, therefore buying say a xbox 360 pad for games wouldn't be worth it for me, indeed I remember an old arcade style game called in the pit that used the Xbox controller uniquely but hardly anyone played sinse not only was the controller requirement very specific, but the game wasn't really all that unique, thus not really providing much impetus for people to go out and change their controllers. Something like the Sea Monkey however uses a form of analogue control not available otherwise, indeed it's part of Aprone's intention that it's design as a head tracker will let it be a perfect device for full 3D movement and scanning in audio sinse the player can move his/her head and have the sound scape change, and thus does things that the keyboard, or a bog standard gamepad, can't. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. [Audyssey] Paladin of the Sky a new audio rpg
Hi. Audiogames.net is currently down due to server issues, so I'm not sure how many people saw the news item I wrote on the front of site earlier this week. For anyone who didn't, and indeed for those who don't check the front of site, Paladin of the Sky is a new audio rpg by the same developer who created Adventure at C. it is a full scale, console style rpg game in the traddition of games like final fantasy, Xenogears or Grandia, it has a magitech world, a unique plot and a party with multiple characters who learn magic and experience. It is also a massively long game, easily 3 or 4 hours in the demo, and a good 30 hours or more in the full game, and that's not counting hard mode and various extras. The soundscape is a little lacking sinse the developer wants financial support to add sounds, also there are one or two rough edges with navigation, but hopefully these things will be sorted in the next version, and what there is already is a great plot, lots of space to explore, some unique bosses, and an interesting combat system, albeit one which I do feel probably needs some expantion. Either way the game is very awsome and I can tell is going to go down beside such games as Swamp, Entombed, Sound rts and Shades of doom as a major audio classic. You can get the game from http://www.vgstorm.com/paladin_of_the_sky.php As I said, the demo contains three dungeons, lots of exploring and a good three hours of gameplay, maybe more if you level up your characters more, while the full game is just huuuge! It costs 30 usd, but is imho definitely worth it, plus as I said the developer is looking for fiannces to help expand the game, aprticularly in the matter of sounds. Enjoy! Re: [Audyssey] controller versus keyboard - Re: saitek pro flight system?
Hi Charles, While I agree with you in principle that all games should include keyboard support along side mouse and joystick support that does not mean that there are certain cases where a joystick or mouse is preferable. One of the principle problems here as far as I am concerned is that there are not enough audio games that adequately demonstrates the fact there are cases where a joystick is more precise, more accurate, and much more suited to a certain type of game than is a keyboard. Someone who has always used a keyboard, has had little experience with joysticks in more advanced games, may think the two input methods are equal in function, but they really aren't. To give you an excellent example take Rail Racer by Blind Adrenaline. You are in a racer, a pod on rails, and one of the things you have to master is leaning while going into the turns. Lean too far left or right and you'll hit the sides of the track loosing speed and time on your laps. Don't lean far enough into the turn and your racer will slow down and loose lap time as well. As a result winning and loosing depends a lot on how well you master the turns and leaning into them. The thing is that a keyboard isn't as precise or well suited for precise adjustments, and I am much slower at my lap times in Rail Racer with a keyboard than I am with a joystick or racing wheel. I noticed the first time that I hooked up a joystick to the game and chose to use that instead that it was A, more comfortable, and B, I managed to beat my best lap time by a full five seconds. The point being even without seriously trying to beat my lap times I did it just because the joystick gave me more precise and accurate control over my racer that was just not possible with the keyboard. People who don't regularly use joysticks probably are not aware of the advantages one would have in certain games, and how they could improve the over all playing experience. So comparing prices to keyboards or stating the fact that not enough games have joystick support to justify buying one is only beside the point that they have advantages. One very good example I can think of is the advantage of duel thumbsticks. I don't know of any accessible fighting games that uses this feature of gamepads, but it comes in handy for certain types of fighting games. You could use the left thumbstick to move the character north, south, east, west and the right thumbstick to control a sword or light saber. You could use the right thumbstick to simulate actual swings, parries, slashes, spin your sword, all while moving your character around with the left thumbstick. While it may be possible to simulate this functionality with a keyboard it won't be as comfortable or as smooth as a joystick. Not only that but the way joysticks work offers the possibility to do more interesting things besides merely move left, right, forward, backward, up, or down. Most joysticks offer a range of values from -5000 to 5000 on the x and y axis. What is good about this in addition to direction you can use the value of the x and y axis to determine the speed or rate of the character or in a case like Rail Racer determine how much to turn and lean based on that input value. Keyboards only return an up/down or pressed/released state. Therefore it requires building timers and various checks that simulate the advantages of a joystick all because a keyboard doesn't have the same degree of accuracy and control as a joystick. Weather joysticks offer advantages over keyboards or not you are right to ask about price. On average I'd say an average joystick or gamepad costs about $39 to $49 most places here in the US. Not terribly expensive, but depending on want/need that may be too high for some users. I've seen very cheap ones for $15 and some have gone clear up to $150 or so for a premium controller. So while they can be had for a reasonable price some can get extremely expensive depending on how advanced a gamer is looking for. On the other hand keyboards come bundled with a computer so for the average computer user someone might as well say it doesn't cost anything to own one. If they have to buy one extra again price depends on quality. I'd say $29 to $39 being the average for wireless keyboards, and about $19 being average for a USB keyboard with no fancy features. More or less the same price range as a joystick if one considers it an accessory rather than being bundled with a computer. Since we are on this topic I might want to add that a Logitech gaming mouse, one with gaming features, is in the same general price range too. A decent mouse can be purchased for $39 with 8 or more buttons, wheel, rubber grips, etc. Where as the average PC mouse is like $10 or so. Conclusion buying a good gaming mouse for Swamp etc is no big deal. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] saitek pro flight system?
Hi Simon, Well, that all depends on perspective. It may have been something of a loss in the beginning, but once developers like myself knew for certain someone was using such an expensive controller we could add support for it, and use you as a beta tester. Therefore in the long run buying it may be a benefit to you and the community as well. As a developer we can't just write support for something we can't test directly or indirectly. Not if an end user expects the support to be completely accurate. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] saitek pro flight system?
Hi Simon, Good point. One thing nice about joysticks is the fact they are generally intuitive when it comes to gaming in general. Push the stick forward to move forward, pull back to move backward, and left and right turn or move in that direction. Its both more comfortable than using a keyboard, and chances are most games will use the exact same input commands where with a keyboard it depends on what keys were assigned to the action. With a keyboard there is no certainty that the arrow keys up, down, left, and right will do the expected action. Some developers use alternative keys like a, s, d, and w or j, k, l, and i. In any case you won't know about it until you crack open the manual and read what keys do what. Something else that makes joysticks cool is many developers include profilers so that the end user can assign actions to buttons. This is in my opinion preferable to keyboards, because you can choose what works for you rather than a developer assigning keys he or she thinks are good for the game. Cheers! On 8/8/14, goshawk on horseback goshawk_on_horseb...@fastmail.co.uk wrote: agreed! I also originally came from things like the sega megadrive and Saturn, before good accessible games came out. one can pick up a reasonable joystick or controller for a good price, especially somewhere like ebay, so the don't have the money to get one argument just doesn't hold water. given that with a keyboard, one is always having to remember which keys do something in a game, which gets harder and more confusing the more games one has, I would say that having joystick/game controller access can only be a good thing, as one wouldn't have that issue then. Re: [Audyssey] Audiogames.net down
Hi Tom. Well while I take the point about redundency, between Phil's fantastic games list on Pcs and Applevis, there are already some quite adequate resources in terms of letting people know what games are available aside from audiogames.net, and bare in mind these days your probably talking aa good 500 or so games ((audiogames.net currently has 470 or so games in the db and there are still many to add). [Audyssey] Paladin of the Sky: new audio RPG from VGStorm.com
Hi all, A new audio game has recently been released. It’s called Paladin of the Sky, produced by www.vgstorm.com. It is an RPG in the style of many of the games from the 1990s and 2000s. The game has a very good story, a magic system which involves some rather strict timing, dungeons to explore, hidden things to find, and a quite excellent soundtrack. Just to give you all an idea of how long this game is, I’m at 14 hours of playtime and I haven’t finished the game yet. The game is well worth its $30 price tag in my opinion. The game uses a new system of wall detection, where it plays a tone when you are near a wall, and what pitch the tone is tells you what wall you are near. This is nice in that you instantly know where openings are, and can easily follow complex areas. Hi Dark, Thanks for the suggestions. I'll take those under advisement as I happen to agree with you those are some areas where we can improve upon the site and help out newbies to the community etc. Definitely far more helpful than just another database of games. Plus since Audyssey was intended to be a news site it only follows we should do more in the way of news rather than just handle it here on list. We could easily post news to the site the way you do on the Audiogames.net forum announcing latest releases and so on. Even if we're not at the point of reviving the audeasy mag, a quarterly roundup of game news anddevelopments on the audeasy site would be a very helpful thing, especially if audiogames.net goes down, though iit'd probably be nice to have anyway. Another really useful function which an audeasy website could perform could be to have some introduction to audeaiogames type faqs or articles, that detail a list of important titles, where people should start, explain need for headphones etc. As well as a general introduction, such faqs could also cover historically important games, games for specific devices like Ios or android, what games exist in genre x etc. That sort of specific guideance would be a great service, and also a unique thing not currently provided by audiogames.net or pcs or any of the other sites. Re: [Audyssey] Audiogames.net down
Hi Ishan, Well, offering games for download from Audyssey isn't practical not if you wish to keep it available as a non-profit organization. there are many reasons why your suggestion is simply impractical for us. The first is that disc space for a site is not cheap. We have to pay for every gig we use and storing a lot of games on server would be fairly expensive. Second, we have to pay for the amount of bandwidth we use as far as people downloading files and such. As a result the best and least expensive thing we could do is offer a link to the game's site or link to the server to download the file which would not require drive space or bandwidth on our part. The problem with that is if a certain game doesn't have a site or isn't already somewhere for download we can't link to it. That's not to say we can't eventually come up with a database similar to what Audiogames.net has with links back to the original site or server hosting the game. Cheers! [Audyssey] Castaways contest, with cash prizes
I think it's time to toss a little money back at the community. *Smiling face* I had posted this on audiogames.net, but since it is now offline I'll post this here too. Quick reminder, Castaways can be downloaded from the following link: http://www.kaldobsky.com/audiogames/castaways.zip Castaways 2.7b has been posted, and it contains a game mode called Recorded Challenge. This is how players will participate in the contest. The game always starts you with an identical set of resources, but after that it is up to you to survive and thrive. You have the daunting task of surviving through 1 game ticks as you earn a score based on the things you save up. At any point you can press Shift + space to hear your current score, and also list how many game ticks you have used. 1 ticks seems like a lot at first, but eventually you'll start wishing you had more so you could save up more stuff. Here are how points are calculated. Knights, Rangers, Pikemen, and Cavalry all start out worth 1000 points for the first unit, but each additional unit is worth 100 points less. Having more than 10 of any of these troop types will give no additional points. All units upgraded with Tomes (Serfs, Woodsmen, Physician, ect) start out worth 1000 points for the first unit. Each additional unit is worth 250 less. Having more than 4 of any of these skilled job types will give no additional points. All food stored in your Store houses or Taverns will be counted. Meat, Bread, Vegetables, and Wine all start out worth 500 points for the first item, and each additional item is worth 5 points less. Having more than 100 of any of these food types will give no additional points. Tomes stored in your Store houses start out worth 1000 points for the first Tome, and each additional tome is worth 250 less. Having more than 4 tomes will give no additional points. Lumber and bricks stored in your Store houses are all worth 10 points each. There is no limit on the amount of points you can earn on lumber and bricks. When you first start up the game you'll already have quite a few points. This is normal, because you begin the mission with a lot of food and stuff. As you start to burn through your reserves, that score will drop lower and lower as you work to build your town and get on your feet. Defend yourself against the goblins (walls are your friend) and soon your score will begin to rise as you produce more than you use. The game stops once you reach 1 ticks, but it will still allow you to save your game instead of immediately kicking you out to the main menu. Saving is important, obviously, but your save game files are what you'll submit to be part of the contest. Save your game at any time, and email me the save game file. The score you have at the time of the save, is the score I will credit you with. I will list everyone's scores here in this thread, so you can see what you need to reach in order to beat them. The Prizes: (using the traditional, highest score is better, system) haha First place, $40 (USD) Second place, $35 Third place, $30 Fourth place, $25 Fifth place, $20 Sixth place, $10 Seventh place, $10 Eighth place, $10 Ninth place, $10 Tenth place, $10 Rules: You do not need to have a Kaldobsky Gamer account to participate. This contest is open for anyone to join. Don't cheat, obviously. Contained within the save game file is information about every action you took as you played. I take these save game files and run them through a special program that recreates the same starting conditions and quickly plays through the entire game doing everything you had done. I will use the score my program tells me, which means any type of cheating or save game editing isn't going to work. Don't give other people your save game files so they can turn them in as their own. The program I feed these files into can tell if the original game data matches any of the other files people have submitted. So if you play 100 ticks of the challenge, save it, give it to a friend, he plays the remaining 9900 ticks, and submits it for the contest... I will not count that. Hopefully that makes sense. Do feel free to discus strategy and stuff here to help others. Telling others exactly what you did is totally fine, because their random events will end up being a bit different. I'd actually like to see the more skilled players sharing tips with those who need a hand. Do have a paypal account. I will be sending the prizes out through paypal, so having it is a requirement if you wish to participate. You are able to win more than 1 prize! (I'm allowing this because I have no realistic way to prevent it.) As long as you start over again from the beginning, you can submit additional save files to get your name on the score board multiple times. If you submit another file that is related to one you've already submitted, then it will not be counted. This means that

More or less the same price range as a joystick if one considers it an accessory rather than being bundled with

Hi Thomas, I managed to get castaways working, but my people seem to always end up starving. Here's what I start with. I use the strong start, and once my storehouse is complete, i then have them build a sawmill so lumber can be produced. I then build a hospital, a few farms and a tavern. I also assign jobs as I go along, such as people to farm, hunt and fish, but still they seem to starve. I have a bartender and cook too, and I notice my pesents seem to drop off all their food supplies at the tavern, and when I try closing it to stop them from doing it, they still starve. I can't seem to assign my pesents to transport certain types of items. I've checked out the buildings guide, and know what each building does, i just need to figure out the starting combo. Re: [Audyssey] Audiogames.net down
Hi Tom. I certainly wouldn't object to audeasy replicating news, sinse not only would this mean more sources of game news and more people looking out for new games and updates (the other news posters and I try my best but we're only human), but also there's always some advantage to seeing news told in a different way or style. I certainly think some newbie introductions would be helpful. I had considdered putting together some articles for the articles room on audiogames.net with lists of correct links to db entries, but this would be again something else to maintain and if say the download url for Shades of doom changed it'd be something else to update as well and frankly working on the db and news is already more than enough to keep me busy. Therefore, some diversity in what audeasy did, particularly in the area of being a launching point for new gamers as well as an alternative source of news owuld be great. From Lori. -Original Message- From: Thomas Ward Sent: Saturday, August 09, 2014 2:55 PM To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] help needed with castaways. Hi Lori, In Castaways it all depends on if there is any work to be done. If your peasants are just standing around not doing anything there is probably something else that needs done first and they are waiting on some task to be completed. I'd need to know more about the situation here. cheers! I thought once I'd given a pesent it's job, I'd hear the unit move, but when I cycle through the list, it just says their names, and that they are just standing around. I checked their energy, and it's high, so not sure what I'm missing? I also tried to get into the online game, but when I press shift slash to see who else is online, I'm told I'm not linked to any players, even though miltiplayer mode is set. I'd be glad of any help. Re: [Audyssey] help needed with castaways.
Hm, this is so wierd... I have 5 pesents, they transported the things to my mill, and although I set one of them to the whieght farm, there isn't any being dropped off at the mill. I also built a textile, and assigned a taylor and a weever, but they arn't making cloth for my hospital, despite my butcher producing animal furs. -Original Message- From: john Sent: Sunday, August 10, 2014 1:06 AM To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] help needed with castaways. I'd like to debate you on the starter, Dark. I've actually come very close to losing people while building the storehouse, so imho there's a lot of value in using strong start. This is especially true in mission 5, because you really don't have time to play with dragging resources all the way across the map. - Original Message - From: dark d...@xgam.org To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Date sent: Sat, 9 Aug 2014 23:13:26 +0100 Subject: Re: [Audyssey] help needed with castaways. Hi Lori. Your peasants will transport stuff automatically, starting with food then moving on to less essential supplies, this is why you always need many peasants. As for starving, you need a cook. Without a cook to serve meals your people will starve even with a warehouse full of food. Btw, I'd not personally recommend the strong start perk sinse Castaways is a longer game and once your start is gone it's gone, your best choosing perks that will help you for a longer period such as green fingered or sweatshop (yes, this is a game where forcing your children to work at as young age as possible is an advantage! ! :d). hth. Awww, I feel so guilty about the children, if the social services heard about this, poor Aprone would be told his game wasn't pc lol. That's politically corect, nothing to do with a pc computer. :) -Original Message- From: dark Sent: Saturday, August 09, 2014 11:13 PM To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] help needed with castaways. Re: [Audyssey] saitek pro flight system?
well I haven't intirely ruled it out yet, but certainly at the moment, I am not exactly confident that the outlay will be worth it, given the current rather limited joystick/controller usage in accessible games. the one good thing about this system, is that as it comes in a number of parts, it is not like I have to get the whole thing in one go, so I can spread the cost a bit. if I know that there are possibilities of more and better support for controllers like this, if testers are available, this is something I would be happy to do. Cheers!
