[Audyssey] Pokemon Crystal with NVDA
Hi, After finally having quite thouroughly completed Manamon, I decided Pokemon Crystal a go. I must say it works surprisingly well. it seems almost miraculous that one can play a game originally made for a fully sighted audience. It isn't glitch-free but very usable. Anyway, having got a bit into the game I stumbled upon a puzzle with sliding panels. I don't know if there is a way to actually solve that puzzle using the accessible interface, but I won't think so. However, consulting a walkthrough I discovered it isn't necessary to solve the puzzle - it's just there for the sake of providing hints. So now I'm wondering, are there any more such stumble-blocks in the game that I should be aware of? Can you actually play through the entire game? Yup, there are a couple of those: both Zcode, Tads and AGT and probably a couple others. One of them is a ZCode version called hugecave. Re: [Audyssey] The old text game known as adventure or colossal cave
There is a version on the Interactive Fiction Archive called Adventure 770. If memory serves me right, there is a Windows version. I wouldn't be surprised if it's possible to compile a version from the freely available source using Cygwin or mingw32. Yes, this is techno-babble, I know, but basically, there are a couple of Linux/Unix-like environments that can be installed on top of Windows to enable people to run Unix apps under Windows. Re: [Audyssey] Manamon fighting the shadow master.
Having progressed beyond that part I can say that it seems the shadow master is a task for much further into the game, however, I'm also curious. Suppose that you were to painstakingly to level up you party and succeed in defeating his fourth manamon, rather than getting captured and having to complete the tunnels part, is that even possible, and would the story then take another branch? [Audyssey] Collecting Manamon
Hi, As I've been progressing through the game, I haven't been all that keen on catching every single type of manamon, but rather having focused on levelling up my current bunch. My question is this, Are there certain points in the game where you're supposed to catch rather than battle manamon? Can you get stuck or miss out on stuff just because the fighting spirit gets the better of you? Two places that comes to mind in that respect are the Mananet Factory and the Sky lands - and also the chests containing manamon Thanks, Tobias --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Manamon: Space Game
Aha, seems to be a bug related to my sound in some way, since the ships definetely sound in mono, although other sounds in the game are heard in stereo like people running around and the vulcanic fires, chests and other items. Most peculiar. I did update my Windows PC to Windows 10 Anniversary update the other day. Hope MS didn't break anything sound related. This is quite a serious bug because I'm currently in that particular situation in which I have to have a descent score in the space game to get on with the story. Now, at least, I know theresn't much point in trying my luck at that game until the sound bug is solved somehow. Hi, One thing that deserves repeating with dragonstrike scrolls is the sound card delay factor. Yep, that's the point. You're supposed to match a sequence of beeps. There are different sequences for different scrolls. Hi, The trick is to find the spot where one or more of the tones aren't sounding, which woudl indicate that there's no wall right there in the direction corresponding to that particular absent tone, so one can follow a wall till its tone drop sout, indicating a passage. Re: [Audyssey] final fantasy style Mud
Mud connector lists a bunch of muds support sound include Dune, based on the sci-fi novels by Frank Herbert. On Wed, 16 Mar 2016, dark wrote: Hi Paul. Vipmud is good, I like it myself. As I said you can use the free version no problems, though i did buy it to support the program and david greenwood, plus, the msp support for sounds is used by one or two muds, albeit not many, only classic six dragons, materiamagica and medeivia. Screen reader settings in mud usually disabled ascii maps and directions, spammy text that pops up a little too often, occasions when text colour is used to indicate stuff, and usually reduce the amount of lines for repetitive things like battles to just a few to make it easier to catch up. Discworld mud I had trouble with, it was a detailed game with good descriptions from the books, but I just found it hard to find anything to really do in the game, there's a hole list of features but no real quests or anything and it was just depressing to run into people I knew from the books like Moist von lipwig or corporal knobs and not be able to interact with them, but there are people who sware by it. Alteraeon is exceptional as a game, however the problem is the MushZ client is so good, it's the one instance I don't use Vip for a mud sinse it effectively turns the game into a full blow audio rpg with background music, sounds instead of text for common things like battles and spells, one key press action keys etc. Of course text is still sent and needs reading, but it's not really an accurate depiction of what a mud is like. Lots of people will play Alteraeon with the MushZ pack and then assume every mudh should have full background sounds and such and be disappointed when they find muds are basically text games, then again playing Alteraeon without the mushZ pack would be missing out or a massive amount of atmosphere and fun and the great work done by the devs of both MushZ and Alteraeon in supporting it. So, I'd suggest playing Alteraeon with MushZ just as a great experience of a fantastic audio online rpg, quite independent of most other muds, and then trying something like aardwolf, Materiamagica, classic six dragons, Clok or discworld (there are some descriptions on audiogames.net), as an intro to muds. Aardwolf particularly has a very good mud bnewbie school and lots of handy shortcuts and directions to make things friendly, as well as an interesting distribution of mobs and quests per area and lots of helpful players. On the other hand, it's up to you, I actually need to get back on Alteraeon myself and attempt to srot out my character. Re: [Audyssey] Getting into programming
Howabout sound programming, gamepad programming etc? Does Powerbasic hav any support for that. The real advantage wiht advanced languages like these would probably be all the 3d sound rendering and force feedback/immersion stuff that they support. On Mon, 7 Mar 2016, Travis Siegel wrote: I know most folks will direct you to c, c++, java, python, and various other pieces of software/languages for your development, but as I've said before, and as I'll no doubt say again, for simplicity, and ease of use, and maximum compatibility, you can't beat powerbasic. It's produced by a company called powerbasic, and they have both console and graphics versions of the compiler. By default, any code compiled on powerbasic will run on every single version of windows, from win95 right up through win10. You can't beat that for compatibility. It's also about 90 percent compatible with quickbasic and even gwbasic, which makes porting those old programs you have lying around extremely simple. It also produces programs that require no external dlls (unless you use them yourself for program features) and it produces small fast executables. Even the hello world program is only a few K, which in this day and age is phenomenal, considering visual basic and visual C require megabytes for the same program. The new versions are $169 or $199 (depending on whether you want the console or graphic version of the compiler) and an older version of the compiler (referred to as powerbasic classic) sells for just $99). You can't beat that either, considering they still actively develop and support powerbasic. I've used it for years in my windows programming, and never once regretted it. If you want to get into programming, and you want it to be dead simple, then powerbasic is definitely something you should take a look at. Heh, and just for reference, they even still sell (and support) a version of powerbasic for dos, that sells for $99. How's that for dedicated. I agree totally with you about the lack of RPG games, before I lost my sight I was a huge Final fantasy fan, the last one I got to play before I lost my sight was final fantasy 10, it's such a shame these games aren't more accessible as I'd love to play them again or some of the new ones. Although it is for this reason I started to learn BGT as I wanted to write my own RPG, and through learning BGT have started to build my own little RPG, it's only a couple of levels at the moment and I don't think it will ever be some amazing audio game (but that's more down to my lack of imagination when it comes to building storylines, but hoping I can get a friend who writes to help out on that front), but it shows it can be done and all with no previous programming knowledge and just using BGT, but I think with enough determination and imagination it can be done. As for the character sheets you are talking about I've never done actual role play /D and D so not really too sure exactly what these are or what they would contain, so not 100% sure if you could build what you wanted with BGT , but I don't see why not. There is a BGT forum which has some really helpful people all with a lot more experience than me in programming with BGT, if you say what you're trying to build with the character sheets I'm sure people would let you know if it's achievable. If I can learn the knack of coding, then that would be, I think, a first good attempt at a real project. Down the road, as I indicated in my original post, I would want to try to create a role-playing game. It frustrates me that sighted users have a multitude of role-playing games that they can play, e.g. Pillars of Eternity, Skyrim and so on, but we cannot. I have played some mainstream role-playing games (it takes some work, but I can manage) and that is why I wish to try and learn how to code. Re: [Audyssey] AudioQuake
How much luck have people been having with the regular Quake levels and expansion packs? Also, when trying out previous versions of Audioquake, I experienced crashes when restoring saved games. Re: [Audyssey] For all FSX private GA flight pilots.
Hi, What does that acronym P3D stand for? IYP is obviously It's Your Plane - that voice control plugin for FSX. In the real world Dassault is testing a new bird that we all are going to want to replace the older df7x with for our private ga flights. It is the DF8x. Now why would we want to cell off our df7x for the df8x? 1. the df8x flys 500 miles further than the df7x. 2. the fuel on the df8x is 35 percent more efficient than the older df7x. Below is a letter that I received from the company who made the df7x aircraft that we all enjoy and take for granted. They stated that they might think of creating the df8x. Maybe if enough of us write to them they will create the df8x. You know that if enough of us write that they might listen to what their curstomers want to fly. even if we had to purchase it and it was free, if it were to be blind friendly I'd purchae it. Pluse when Robert is feeling better, it shouldn't take all that much more to add the df8x since we already have the df7x in the IYP fleet of support aircraft. I fly thanks to the following three programs working together. 1. FSX. 2. FSUIPC. Now, FSUIPC allows FSX to communicate with third party programs. 3. Last but not least the voice input program from Canada called It?s your Plane or IYP for short. Their web page is at www.itsyourplane.com Now for private GA flights, the only aircraft to fly private GAflights is the Dassault Falcon 7x or for short the DF7X. But has anyone checked out the dassault falcon webpage lately? They now have the df8x. Why would one want to upgrade? 1. the df8x flys 500 miles further than the df7x. 2. the fuel is 35 percent more efficient than the older df7x. The only sad thing about the IYP program is that it is all voice input. You have no actual physical hands on interfacing withyour aircraft. I don?t care if you are blind or if you are sighted, we all need one inportant item. That item it confirmation feedback. Whenwe perform a action, we want to know that we performed that action correctly or not. The sighted will receive this vital information via their eyes. We the blind receive the same information via audio output, force and or shock feedback, and or via some type of vibrational feedback. If we had any combination of the above, we too could fully use the fsx program. What?s nice about the FSX program via the keyboard is that we can celect the bird we want to fly, make sure the date and time and weather is set to the real world as possible, and we also can file our flight plan. But to crall or taxi while on the ground and to navigate and so on, we need that audio feedback or a third party AI copilot or ai first officer program to help us out like the IYP program. Now I?ve heard that there?s a new up coming Microsoft flight simulator version 2016. Is this a fact or is it a rumer? I have been flying Microsoft Flight simulator version ten gold since October of 2009. Which now days is also simply known by as FSX. So in closing, is there any hope of having access to the new up coming DF8X for we who fly thanks to FSX in the windows 10enviroment? I thank you for your time. Re: [Audyssey] several messages
Hi, I can't say I'm too thrilled over yet another Space Invaders Clone in the Audio Games community. Why not try to do something original like bilateral movement in a space shooter. It has been done with Tank Commander and Shades of Doom after all, and that was over ten years ago. I think the Audio Games business suffers from a quite severe case of idea recycling and lack of innovative development. On the positive side though, I much prefer other titles by this developer such as the Inquisitor series or the Rally game. /Tobias On Thu, 19 Nov 2015, IV Productions wrote: Hi all, here we are with some news we hope you'll find juicy... Hi, Any and all strategy tips are welcome. I know I can jump the demon light and the most of the attacks and side-jump the "unjumpable" one. Hi, I tried the Android version but found it to be totalyy inaccessible, at least on my Samsung Galaxy sIII running JellyBean 4.1.2 and Talkback 3.5.0B2. The screen seems totally unreadable to Talkback. On Sun, 22 Sep 2013, Phil Vlasak wrote: Freeq FREEQ is an audio adventure game for iPhone and android mobile devices $4.99 USD by Psychic Bunny An audio adventure game that gives you the amazing ability to tune in to phone calls and radio signals from the past or future. You can essentially travel through time and change the world. After a major disaster, there's only one society left on Earth. You can use your powerful tool to tune in to their dramatic conversations about affairs, arguments, experiments, and more. This is nothing like the games you're used to playing on your iPhone. There are plenty of instructions to read through before you get started. I do actually recommend reading them all so you don't find things confusing once you start searching for signals to hijack. Hijacking a phone line is done in two stages. The first involves tilting your phone until you find a signal and the second involves a switchboard where you have to decide who to connect with. If you don't make your decision quickly enough, you'll lose your signal and end up back at the first stage. The story you end up being a part of depends on who you connect with and when you make make the connections. It's worth listening to the conversations carefully so you can decide on what connections to make next. Every conversation you create will give you more clues about what actually caused the world to end. The actual process of finding signals and hijacking conversations is quite repetitive. This app is entertaining because of the stories. The fact that some people know that you're listening to their conversations makes it even more interesting. After listening to a few phone calls, you'll really want to know how the story ends and what happens to the characters involved. If you're the type who enjoys interactive stories and radio shows, you'll love FREEQ. It's also worth checking out if you're getting bored with normal iPhone games and want to try something completely different. Version 1.2 Accessibility Update! FREEQ is now usable for blind and low-vision players. Audio instructions are in-game for further information. It has an accessibility mode that uses voiceover like jestures, that being flick and double tap. To activate it, you put your thumb and finger together then slide them both away from each other, like the opposite of a pinch in smack me. I do find myself however that the sapi support, occasionally aided by supernova's virtual curser works fine, indeed back when I started playing interactive fiction with winfrotz I just! used the virtual curser. I have also heard that the filfre interpreter is particularly good with jaws, once again, check the filfre page in th db for details. As to the infocom games, you can find them all at http://if.illuminion.de/index.html I have heard filfre has had trouble opening some of the older infocom format games in zip or dat format, so you might also want to considder that when thinking about interpreters. hth. Re: [Audyssey] Question About Playing Smugglers 5
Thanks, Kelly. I am mainly a braille user, and would prefer not to rely on speech output. I know there are two frotzes for Windows, namely Winfrotz (the older one) and Windowsfrotz (the newer one). It would have been nice to be able to run games on the newer interpreter. I've also seen a few other Windows-based interpreters on the IF Archive. I think I'll try out those too, and see what I can get out of them in terms of accessibility. It might also pay off for me to try Windowsfrotz with NVDA, since at times it seems to surpass Jaws in certain areas. And maybe I'll throw a mail at the Windowsfrotz dev and see if that person is willing to make the program more Jaws friendly. Also, there were some occasions where JAWS couldn't see the word "guns" when I tried moving to it in order to use them during a battle. Any suggestions, or is all this normal behavior? Thanks. [Audyssey] Infocom Interpreters?

I couldn't find a cage to grab. I tried 2 more with no success. Others on the game reported that they too were having problems completing quests. In fact, the person who grabbed the cage before I did, went back, donated it, and got the same quest again. But this time could not find the cage again and gave up on it. Re: [Audyssey] Any chance of making huge cave work with windows?
Hi, There is a Z-Code version of Huge Cave in the Interactive Fiction Archive. If there is any such thing as an accessible Z-Code interpreter for Windows nowadays, it's possible to run that game under Windows. On Tue, 3 Jan 2012, Ron Kolesar wrote: Hello to my fellow gamers. The one game that my brother and I both enjoyed playing in the days of dos games was the adventure game huge cave. Water dripping and everything else you'd find in a cave. also, another game comes to mind. Would love to see a windows blind friendly with sound effect The Oregon Trails game as well. now I know there's some coders on this list. So how about it? Many Many Thanks. Amazon's virtual servers went down for a bit Monday night, taking services such as 4Square and even the System Access network off line for a while. If a site has been down for a week or more, than I might start to wonder, but unless a notice has been posted somewhere, or the site has been down for an extended period of time, chances are the site is not closing. [Audyssey] Quake mission packs
Hi, For all Audioquake players: In case you're now aware of this, there are two mission packs for Quake in addition to the original full game. I'm not talking about Quake II and III, but rather Quake I Mission Pack 2 and 3, which picks up the story right after the original game ends. These might also be CDs to look out for, alternatively search the filesharing networks for, depending on your ethical preferences. They consist of 16 levels each, if I remember correctly, so that's an additional 32 levels to the 40 levels in the full game. [Audyssey] Agame for the brain
Hi, Maybe some of you are familiar with the game Boulderdash. It's a strategy game from the 80s in which your objective is to collect diamons while digging your way through earth and avoiding falling boulders. You had to think strategically so as not to corner yourself. Well, there is a text-mode game called Wadnerer that's got similar gameplay. The main difference is that this game is turn-based with a limited ammount of moves for each level, rather than being timed. All the diamonds, boulders, arrows, ramps etc ar represented by symbols on the screen. The player is an @-sign. In the version I'm running in Linux there are 61 levels included. There's also a built-in level editor. I can run the game with braille without any problem. There are two screen modes, and the mod eyou want is fullscreen mode. I don't know how playable this game might be with speech tough. The game's homepage can be found at www.steveshipway.org/software/wanderer/f_wanderer.html I imagine that one or both of the DOS versions might work in Windows. It might be worth a try. I find this game highly addictive and quite fun. Re: [Audyssey] SimCity was Huge gaming news!
Hi, It sounds to me as if the quoted paragraph only forbids people to use the name "Sim City" on their derivative work. It's only the TRADEMARK you cannot use; the code itself is under GPL and is therefore modifiable, redistributable etc. Regards, Tobias On Mon, 14 Jan 2008, Thomas Ward wrote: > Hi, > Actually, I think you under estimate what a task it is to take a > commercial game and rewrite portions of it in such a way to add > accessibility. Re: [Audyssey] Montezuma Alchemy Pre-order confusion
Hi, Well, I was lucky enough to receive a receipt, though I'm a bit unsure of whether my order was refunded or not. My PayPal transaction history dosen't indicate any refund, so I suppose that isn't the case. But if I'm gettin git right, James North said he would refund all orders but didn't. That would clear my confusion. Thanks, Tobias On Sat, 29 Dec 2007, Robin Kipp wrote: > Hi Tobias, > I also pre-ordered Monty when Alchemy still existed. [Audyssey] Montezuma Alchemy Pre-order confusion
Hi, If my memory serves me, I think I recently read a message from USA Games to on this list regarding pre-orders of Montezuma placed with Alchemy Game Studios. I can't find that message, so correct me if I'm wrong. Anyway, I remmeber reading that Alchemy order receipts could be e-mailed to [EMAIL PROTECTED] as proof of purchase. On the other hand I found, when sifting through old e-mails, that James North were upposed to have refunded all orders. I can see a payment to Alchemy in my PayPal account but no transaction *from* Alchemy, which would indicate that my order was not refunded, and that my order woudl still be valid. Have I missed something? Re: [Audyssey] DOS from XP for games?
Hi, A few additional tips: It seems that it's possible to boot Freedos from a USB memory. Check their homepage at www.freedos.org for more details. For obtaining boot disks for various operating systems including old DOS versions, head over to www.bootdisk.com. Re: [Audyssey] Hobit and Lord of the Rings
Hi Ari, My point was that the PC versions of the games are more or less accessible. You could run the PC (DOS) version of say Lord of the Rings from the command prompt in Windows XP. BTW, there is also an interpreter somewhere on the if-archive calld unquill. This interpreter can run games written with a system called The Quill. Unquill will be able to run some of the Spectrum (.z80 and .sna) games. HTH, Tobias On Sun, 11 Nov 2007, ari wrote: > Hi Tobias, > I've got the games, it's just finding an accessible interpreter! Re: [Audyssey] Hobit and Lord of the Rings
Hi, I know that PC versions of many games including those from Level 9 and also Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit are available from Home of the Underdogs at: www.the-underdogs.info However, that site requires visual verification. A few years back I remember someone on this list saying something about a special passwor dfor us blind/visually impaired people, that we could use to access this site. I e-mailed the site owner asking for the password but I didn't get a response. Maybe I should try again. Their collection of text adventures (interactive fiction) is probably the best collection of so-called abandonware you'll find on the Internet. Hi, The console version of the game uses jcurses. In the zip file there is a Linux and a Windows version of the jcurses component. I got the impression you were i Mac user. If there is a jcurses implementation for Mac then I suppose CVRL will work even on a Mac.
