me to use it with Hal.

This hasn't always been the case of course. Back in the earlier versions of
orphius only the synthetic voices were available and hal sounded a lot like a
dalek, which was one reason I tried out win vision and deck talk.

Then, Orphius shipped with the more human voices Alan and Carol and I got to
be a fan.

The only slight irritation is that for some odd reason Dolphins' stopped
shipping Hal with the more human orphius voices and now only ships it with the
synthetic ones. When I asked they said most people used the synthetic ones,
which I found rather odd. Luckily orphius' more human voices are offered
as free downloads by Dolphin anyway.

I have heard a rumour that the company who make orphius split from dolphin and
are now bust, in fact I've been trying to find the latest version of
orphius online and not having any luck at all.

At least though Dolphin will continue to ship Hal with the currently latest
version.

Hi Hayden,
I guess it would largely depend on what you started with, and learned
to like first. I myself began using Dos screen readers in the early
90's and at the time the Dectalk PC and Dectalk Express hardware
synths were the best around. They were the most human sounding you
could get on the market, and I fell in love with the Dectalk line of
products at that point. When Jaws 3.2 or 3.3 began shipping with
Eloquence I totally dispised the synth from day one. Oh, I can use it,
but I hate the voice with a passion.
However, I've noticed those users who started with Jaws for Windows
and Eloquence from the start say Eloquence is great and hate Dectalk.
Their opinion is as much a mystery to me as I'm sure my opinion is to
them. However, I think it boils down to the fact I started with
Dectalk and liked it, and Eloquence never lived upto my expectations.
Those who started with Eloquence have their own gripes and complaints
about Dectalk. All I can say is different strokes for different folks.

eloquence is ok for a synth but all the small issues it had in the past.

the box, and one very huge reason I switched over to them around the
4.0 days. I've always been a fan of the Dectalk products, and when
Window Eyes made it the default synth I switched. I only keep Jaws
around for odd jobs and things where Window-eyes support could be a
little better. Otherwise I have no need of the shark.

I must confess I do agreee, Now that I've got scansoft daniel, sapi for
games, even highly complex ones like entombed or time of conflict works
great.

Then again it seems heavily dependent upon voice. That was one of the chief
reasons the screen reader speech business got added to Entombed, because the
default sapi voices are so completely horrible as compared to the
proprietory ones which Hal, jaws etc use, and honestly I can't blame
people for that.

I stil have a laugh with my friends remembering the occasion when they
turned up while I was in the shower, and I yelled instructions at them to
set up a game of kitchinsinc life on my desktop and turn up the volume so I
could here it in my bathroom.

unfortunately, that was back before I could even get ms mike or Mary working
and was stuck with microsoft Sam.

You may play the markit if you own stck, but you daaan't!

So ultimately it's a case of you may play the sapi if you have a good

Actually Sapi and Hal let me do that pretty well, in fact I've quite
often been known to flick Hal's voice back on, read E-mails then flick back
to entombed and turn the voice off, especially if I come up against
something wonky in the game.

As I said Bryan, I've been doing this in Hal for ages, in games or indeed
when watching dvd's sinse I can just flick Hal's voice off and use the
standard power dvd shortcuts on my computer just like buttons on a standard

It's probably okay when you get used to it, but this keyboard snagging and

That's one thing I like about Window-Eyes. It can still be running when a
game is in progress because it doesn't monopolize the keyboard the way JFW
does. And you don't even have to modify either the game or the screen
reader for this to work the way you often do with JAWS. I used to unload
my screen reader out of habit even after switching to WE. Then one
afternoon I went to play a game of Classic Pipe and for whatever reason I
forgot to unload Window-Eyes. I wasn't even aware of this until after I'd
quit the game. Window-Eyes neither spoke nor caused any key conflicts. If
I'd tried that with JAWS I'd have been lucky to pass the first level. And
if someone messages me I can switch over and reply without disrupting the
game, not that I make a habit of that.

selecting that option. Then I could set it to go to sleep when I want it to.

Well that's a matter of personal opinion. I happen to not like JAWS because
of how it monopolizes the keyboard, not to mention a whole host of other
issues I could spend all day listing if I so chose but won't. I just happen
to like how you can if necessarily leave Window-Eyes running while playing a
game and not have it interfere with it.

That's one thing I like about Window-Eyes. It can still be running when a
game is in progress because it doesn't monopolize the keyboard the way JFW
does. And you don't even have to modify either the game or the screen
reader
for this to work the way you often do with JAWS. I used to unload my
screen
reader out of habit even after switching to WE. Then one afternoon I went
to

play a game of Classic Pipe and for whatever reason I forgot to unload
Window-Eyes. I wasn't even aware of this until after I'd quit the game.
Window-Eyes neither spoke nor caused any key conflicts. If I'd tried that
with JAWS I'd have been lucky to pass the first level. And if someone
messages me I can switch over and reply without disrupting the game, not
that I make a habit of that.

See with Window-Eyes you don't even have to do that much, unless a keystroke
in the game would conflict with a Window-Eyes keystroke. And it's easy to
modify hotkeys so they don't interfere.

Hi Bryan,
Oh, don't get me started on Freedom Scientific tech support. Those
guys are idiots. They have an extremely narrow view of the world
that's for sure.
I remember calling them about wanting to support the Dectalk 5
Software produced by Phonix. They are like, Why do you want to do
that? Everybody uses Eloquence. There is no need to support the
Dectalk software. I suggest you use Eloquence instead.
It seams whoever answered my call has a massive shortage of brain
power. Perhaps I wanted to use the Dectalk software because I like it,
because contrary to his view not everybody likes Eloquence, and not
everyone with half a brain wants to use it. It is very insulting to
call up a tech support person and be told that the company sees my
request as not worth their time. Then, to suggest that maybe I should
use Eloquence instead because everybody else uses it. That's totally
missing the point of my call.
So I'm sure if I called them about Neospeech Kate or Paul their
response wouldn't be too much different. They seriously have a bad
attitude about their customers wants, needs, and opinions. So Jaws
isn't worth my time, and several others. That is one reason I went to
Window-Eyes several years back.

Yeah. And I bet if you asked them to help you configure a game you were
developing to work with JAWS their response would be the same. JAWS wasn't
meant to be used to play games! or somesuch nonsense. I'll freely admit I
use Eloquence more than the other voices I have but only because it has the
highest response rate of any synthe I've ever used. I wouldn't bother with
it at all but for that. And I absolutely refuse to use it in audio games if
I can help it.

Re: [Audyssey] problem with horse racing

2010-04-21 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Muhammed,
As Bryan said earlier with Window-Eyes most of the time you don't even
have to put the screen reader to sleep with most games. In fact, when
I'm doing all of my testing I have Window-Eyes running in the
background to catch any popup error messages etc while I'm playing.
With Jaws 11 the keys won't work and the game locks up unless I put it
to sleep or unload it. That makes it less than useful for a game
developer, and a royal pain in the tail.

There was no need to be rude or condescending about it though. A company
like that really needs pay more attention to their customers' wants and
needs. That's probably why a lot of people who make the switch from JAWS do
it in the first place. And there are things that, say, Window-Eyes does
that, while JAWS might do the same things, Window-Eyes does better.

Re: [Audyssey] problem with horse racing

2010-04-21 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
No, it is just simply the fact ever since shipping Eloquence with Jaws
they automatically assume that is what all of their customers will use
or want to use. Plus for them to purchase the Phonix Dectalk 5 SDK
and then write a Jaws driver for it would cost them money, and they
don't want to do it. So they suggested Eloquence instead. Which, like
I said, totally missed my point I don't very much like Eloquence and
want the speed and reliability of Dectalk.
Window-Eyes on the other hand ships with the Dectalk software out of
the box, and one very huge reason I switched over to them around the
4.0 days. I've always been a fan of the Dectalk products, and when
Window Eyes made it the default synth I switched. I only keep Jaws
around for odd jobs and things where Window-eyes support could be a
little better. Otherwise I have no need of the shark.

Smile.

technition I think. He helps us with all of hour problems. Off cource if we
really need help and he can't help, then we ring tech support. If they're
like that, I'd like to prank call them, hehehe.

 Hi Bryan,
Oh, don't get me started on Freedom Scientific tech support. Those
guys are idiots. They have an extremely narrow view of the world
 that's for sure.
I remember calling them about wanting to support the Dectalk 5
Software produced by Phonix. They are like, Why do you want to do
that? Everybody uses Eloquence. There is no need to support the
Dectalk software. I suggest you use Eloquence instead.
It seams whoever answered my call has a massive shortage of brain power.

 Smile.

 Inever liked about JAWS.

That makes it less than useful for a game
developer, and a royal pain in the tail.

don't want to do it. So they suggested Eloquence instead. Which, like

Window-Eyes on the other hand ships with the Dectalk software out of

conflicts with DirectInput and will not release keyboard control to
the application when it has focus. Despite having told FS about this
problem over and over again for years it goes in one ear and out the

I've seen a good few games which say unload your screen reader where in
actual fact your screen reader just means jaws and it's irritated key

The only sad thing is Jaws is so often presented as the only system

Actually Bryan, having to put a screen reader to sleep while running games
or other programs would down right annoy me.

When writing up material for audiogames.net I quite commonly load up a game
to check basic info such as keys or main menue options and flick out of the
game to write stuff down, then flick back. I also do this frequently when
error reporting or testing as well, or indeed when I just feel the need
to check my mail and am too lazy to stop playing, say, in the middle of
a long entombed game (which obviously I run with sapi).

Maybe I've just become too used to the option, but not having it there would
be a major pest.

Hi Dark,
Based on my personal experience here Jaws is definitely the exception
not the rule. Right now I have Window-Eyes 7.11 and the latest
version of NVDA on my system and neither one has a problem being run
in the background with a game. I've used both of them with MOTA beta
12 with no conflicts at all. I would assume that Hal will similarly
have no problems. With the Jaws 11 demo the game's keyboard input
locks up every time. There is obviously something in Jaws that
conflicts with DirectInput and will not release keyboard control to
the application when it has focus. Despite having told FS about this
problem over and over again for years it goes in one ear and out the
other. All their so-called tech support says is to put Jaws to sleep,
but once again they consistantly overlook the obvious. I don't have to
do this with Window-Eyes or NVDA. Why do Jaws users have to put up
with this behavior from Jaws when clearly it is a Jaws issue and not a
screen reader issue?

fast, in

fact it's the only synth I've seen that can keep up with my usual typing
speed even set on word echo.

I do rather wonder if Jaws's idio syncracies, inability to flick

off, keyboard shinanigans etc are the exception, rather than the rule.

Exactly Dark. That's the only reason I was such a staunch JAWS user for ten

But the reason, at least here in the US, that so many people support JAWS is
that state agencies for the blind are contractually obligated by FS to teach

I've seen a good few games which say unload your screen reader where in

Re: [Audyssey] problem with horse racing

2010-04-21 Thread dark
Well, that does happen in this country as well sadly. I'm not sure why my
secondary school began with hal, - maybe things were different in the
early 90's, pluss my brother already had a very good relationship with
dolphin anyway and was a major fan of luna as a magnifyer.
After some experimentation, I did try win vision briefly at one point, which
was able to give amazingly fast response with decktalk thanks to a hardware
synthesisor box, - which proceeded to break down completely within six
months of me using it, at which point I was given a copy of supernova to be
going on with, and it actually turned out the stuff which had attracted
me to trying win vision in the first place was quite doable with a more up
to date version of Hal than the one I'd been used to previously.

I did experiment with jaws for a few days on a computer at a society for the
blind in Nottingham, more for interest sake than anything else. The
profound difficulty in changing basic settings such as reading of capitals I
found quite irritating. At the time I believed this was because I was
unfamiliar with Jaws, now though i actually wonder if it's just that
(as Tom has said), jaws doesn't really make altering settings too easy
anyway.

well eloquence is the blindness shipping product that goes in everything.
win eyes, k1000, and even hal now though some like k1000 and gw did have
dectalk synths.
eloquence is ok for a synth but all the small issues it had in the past.
Its also quite robotic and crappy, though as a fast responce synth its good
for what it needs to be which is probably why its everywhere.

Hi,
No, it is just simply the fact ever since shipping Eloquence with Jaws
they automatically assume that is what all of their customers will use

don't want to do it.

One advantage with HAL (and I can say this just based on what dark has said)
is that you can easily turn off most of it with control 8. I've always found
it a apin to have to go into configuration manager and put it to sleep; I
just unload it before launching the game.

Re: [Audyssey] problem with horse racing

2010-04-21 Thread dark
I must confess, for all workings with hal I'm a big fan of Orphius' human
voices. Fast response time pluss a convincing British English accent. For
Sapi stuff I do like realspeak daniel, but it's response time is far too
slow for me to use it with Hal.

This hasn't always been the case of course. Back in the earlier versions of
orphius only the synthetic voices were available and hal sounded a lot like
a dalek, which was one reason I tried out win vision and deck talk.

Then, Orphius shipped with the more human voices Alan and Carol and I got to
be a fan.

The only slight irritation is that for some odd reason Dolphins' stopped
shipping Hal with the more human orphius voices and now only ships it with
the synthetic ones. When I asked they said most people used the synthetic
ones, which I found rather odd. Luckily orphius' more human voices are
offered as free downloads by Dolphin anyway.

I have heard a rumour that the company who make orphius split from dolphin
and are now bust, in fact I've been trying to find the latest version
of orphius online and not having any luck at all.

At least though Dolphin will continue to ship Hal with the currently latest
version.

Beware the grue!

Some people don't like JAWS though. I'm one of them. I prefer Sapi in my
games anyway if it's a choice between that and the screen reader. I can
never get the timing quite right between the action and the screen reader's
speech. So I don't bother with it.

Re: [Audyssey] problem with horse racing

2010-04-20 Thread Bryan Peterson
That's one thing I like about Window-Eyes. It can still be running when a
game is in progress because it doesn't monopolize the keyboard the way JFW
does. And you don't even have to modify either the game or the screen reader
for this to work the way you often do with JAWS. I used to unload my screen
reader out of habit even after switching to WE. Then one afternoon I went to
play a game of Classic Pipe and for whatever reason I forgot to unload
Window-Eyes. I wasn't even aware of this until after I'd quit the game.
Window-Eyes neither spoke nor caused any key conflicts. If I'd tried that
with JAWS I'd have been lucky to pass the first level. And if someone
messages me I can switch over and reply without disrupting the game, not
that I make a habit of that.
