The simple solution to this is non-violent civil protest. All of those
people parking cars on Saturdays, just need to not offer the service for the
first game. The resulting traffic jams will be complete chaos, the city
will be begging these people to please let them park on your yard!

Heh. enhanced revenue streams is a euphemism for, they're trying to
gouge us again.

It looks like the law has been around for awhile. They just haven't tried
to enforce it. Well, good luck enforcing it.

It also looks like people are complaining. Probably about not being able
to get to their driveways on game days. I would probably complain too if I
lived that close to the stadium and couldn't get a ticket.

We could all march against city hall, or we could just ignore this and
it'll probably go away eventually.

At risk of straying into THFGT territory (which I don't subscribe to since
I'd likely spend my entire day in front of the computer, arguing with people),
Oliver's characterization is too kind.

I think this is a bunch of parasitical politicians trying to suck more
money out of people. To us it doesn't seem like a lot of money, but it could be
to a house full of students.

What is the likely result? People who don't pay the tax can be fined. By
sticking themselves between buyers and sellers, the government ensures that
everyone is worse off, except the commercial garages. They can now raise their
prices.

There will be fewer lawns available for parking, so people will have to pay
more for those spaces still left. And people will have to drive around more to
find spaces, so there will be more congestion.

Stupid politicians can think only of ways to spend and suck more money out
of people.

When the economy shrinks, all the rest of us find ways to spend less. When
do politicians ever cut spending? They don't, since it's OPM (other people's
money) they are spending.

I don't know why this story has struck such a nerve with me. Maybe it's
because one year I lived close to the stadium and charged people to park. The
money was a big help at the time. Or maybe it's just disgust with everything
that is being done to the country.

One perk of living three blocks from Ben Hill Griffin Stadium - a little
extra entrepreneurial cash on football game days every fall - may be curtailed
as the city of Gainesville begins enforcing a business tax on yard parking.

That was one of the reasons we moved in here, said Chad Zielinski,
referring to a large area set up for parking behind the house he is renting.
We were banking on it to pay our (utility) bills.

For some residents, enforcement of the law represents an over-regulatory
government stepping into a time-honored tradition of homeowners and renters
making a little cash on game day.

Spurrier said Sunday that Bowden and the Seminoles should not have to give up

The simple solution to this is non-violent civil protest.  All of those people
parking cars on Saturdays, just need to not offer the service for the first
game.  The resulting traffic jams will be complete chaos, the city will be
begging these people to please let them park on your yard!

In his defense, Part I was an intro to an album of covers of early

I never asked for transparency.

The fences around the practice fields are covered with opaque green
fabric to a height of about 12 feet. You live close, please check, I
may be wrong about the height but am pretty sure that the opacity and
color are accurate.

I think that you'd have to rent a helicopter to get a good view of
our practices once the guarded gate is closed.

If the current measures at the practice field are inadequate, I'd be
interested in knowing the manner and how much it would cost to
correct those inadequacies.

That seems more sensible than abandoning practice fields that were
built for the purpose of, well, practicing.

Or you can go to the top of the parking garage adjacent to the practice fields

some form of espionage is not going on with our major competitors, you are
being rather naive. These will be the weeks that things like putting Haden in

depth charts. If you want to be a Championship calibur program, you will want
the privacy for these weeks.

They only go to the remote fields for Pre-Season Camp. This is our training
camp where we want to get the team away for the next two weeks, prior to
beginning game prep week for the beginning of the regular season. Other
coaches in the past would take the team to Ocala for the two weeks of two a
days. I don't have a problem with what Coach Meyer is doing. He wants two
weeks of intense focus to get prepared for a most difficult challenge,
Repeating as National Champions. This doesn't happen very often and we will be
wearing a bulls eye every single week. The team will be back on regular
practice field after camp.

I never asked for transparency.

The fences around the practice fields are covered with opaque green fabric to
a height of about 12 feet. You live close, please check, I may be wrong about
the height but am pretty sure that the opacity and color are accurate.

I think that you'd have to rent a helicopter to get a good view of our
practices once the guarded gate is closed.

If the current measures at the practice field are inadequate, I'd be
interested in knowing the manner and how much it would cost to correct those
inadequacies.

That seems more sensible than abandoning practice fields that were built for
the purpose of, well, practicing.

It sounds like what it's really about is collecting a $52 tax. Since you'd get

City to crack down on game-day parking in yards

By Megan Rolland
Gainesville SUN Staff writer

Published: Saturday, August 8, 2009 at 8:58 p.m.
Last Modified: Saturday, August 8, 2009 at 8:58 p.m.

One “perk” of living three blocks from Ben Hill Griffin Stadium — a little
extra entrepreneurial cash on football game days every fall — may be
curtailed as the city of Gainesville begins enforcing a business tax on yard
parking.
“That was one of the reasons we moved in here,” said Chad Zielinski,
referring to a large area set up for parking behind the house he is renting.
“We were banking on it to pay our (utility) bills.”
For some residents, enforcement of the law represents an over-regulatory
government stepping into a time-honored tradition of homeowners and renters
making a little cash on game day.
For other residents, the “perk” is more akin to a “pain” that encourages an
invasion of football fans into a neighborhood seven times a year. In these
residents’ minds, more regulation of yard parking is welcomed.
Still others, such as Gail Ellison, a University of Florida professor who
lives blocks from the stadium, are in the middle of the debate.
“What I am concerned about is what repercussions are going to be here if
people shut off the parking, close down the yards,” said Ellison, who has
lived in the neighborhood for 15 years. “800,000 people come to my
neighborhood on game day and the cars are jammed in these little streets, and
what will happen on day one when at least some of us will not be parking
cars. Where will they go?”
In other words, imagine the panic — or aimless circling — when tailgaters
with coolers of beer and a grill find their favorite lawn is no longer open
because the owner didn’t get a license.
City Manager Russ Blackburn said the city is merely enforcing a law that has
always been on the books in an attempt to maintain a level playing field for
regular parking lots that do have to pay the tax.
Blackburn said that last year he realized the ordinance gave him the
authority to declare days when the city’s ban on “off-street parking” —
parking in yards or driveways — was lifted.
“We had some complaints from residents, people complaining about cars parking
all over their neighborhood,” Blackburn said. “We had good compliance over
the last year and we did not have the complaints.”
Letters were sent last week to residents in the University Heights area,
explaining that city ordinance requires citizens pay a $52 business tax if
they intend to charge people to park on their lawns.
Mayor Pegeen Hanrahan, who lives seven blocks north of the stadium, said she
was glad staff has taken such a proactive step to enforcement this year.
“My recollection is that the request for enforcement did actually come from
neighbors,” Hanrahan said. “I always say when you live this close to the
football stadium you either need to get into the game or get out of town.
It’s really a challenge to be here and not be really substantially impacted.”
Hanrahan said she lets friends park in her driveway for free, which is still
permitted without a business license under the ordinance.
“It can be a very substantial revenue stream,” she said.
The going rate for parking in her neighborhood is between $20 and $25, she
said.
Zielinski, a senior at UF, expects to

The simple solution to this is non-violent civil protest. All of those
people parking cars on Saturdays, just need to not offer the service for the
first game. The resulting traffic jams will be complete chaos, the city
will be begging these people to please let them park on your yard!

Or you can go to the top of the parking garage adjacent to the practice
fields or walk into the baseball stadium from Museum Drive. If you don't
think that some form of espionage is not going on with our major
competitors, you are being rather naive. These will be the weeks that
things like putting Haden in the Wildcat formation, working on personnel
groupings, as well as setting the depth charts. If you want to be a
Championship calibur program, you will want the privacy for these weeks.

They only go to the remote fields for Pre-Season Camp. This is our
training camp where we want to get the team away for the next two weeks,
prior to beginning game prep week for the beginning of the regular season.
Other coaches in the past would take the team to Ocala for the two weeks of
two a days. I don't have a problem with what Coach Meyer is doing. He
wants two weeks of intense focus to get prepared for a most difficult
challenge, Repeating as National Champions. This doesn't happen very often
and we will be wearing a bulls eye every single week. The team will be
back on regular practice field after camp.

I for one back Coach Meyer completely in this decision.

I never asked for transparency.

The fences around the practice fields are covered with opaque green fabric
to a height of about 12 feet. You live close, please check, I may be wrong
about the height but am pretty sure that the opacity and color are accurate.

Chicken pox/shingles/varicella-zoster (was: [gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] [SUN]: FYI (F$U) -- Seminoles' Bowden wants national championship (HAHAHA!!!! -- A.P. / Associated Press)

2009-08-10 Thread Cecilia
Or maybe you would be comfortable enough relying on the National Foundation for
Infectious Diseases by reading this:

http://www.nfid.org/pdf/factsheets/varicellaadult.pdf

Pertinent excerpt:
Shingles, or herpes zoster, is a common illness that strikes about 1 million
Americans each year, more than half 60 years of age and older. Shingles is
caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox.
When people are first infected with the varicella-zoster virus, usually as
children, they get chickenpox. Years or decades later, the virus can reactivate
and cause shingles. Anyone who has had chickenpox is at risk of shingles.
Shingles is associated with normal aging and with anything that weakens the
immune system such as certain medications, cancers, or infections, but it can
also occur in healthy children and younger persons.

I reread the research on shingles and chicken pox 5 or 6 years ago when my
grandson contracted chicken pox from my nephew who had shingles. By the way,
people who are vaccinated can still get chicken pox AND shingles, but they are
likely to have a milder case of either. I've been more inclined to let my kids
(and grandkids) get chicken pox so they'll have a lifelong immunity to it, but
that does carry the risk that they'll be more likely to have shingles later.

More than you've ever wanted to know about chicken
pox/shingles/varicella-zoster...

2009-08-10 Thread Arthur Polhill
Paula has environmental asthema.  That means that things in the environs set it
off.  It lasts about 3 days.  In other words, she can't breath without
assistance of medications or machines.

Tobacco is one of those environmental triggers.  I have become FAR more
sensitive to second-hand smoke than she is as a way to protect her, and me,
from the consequences.

As you know, we have season tickets for ALL Gatorn events.  When the wind is
coming slowly  from the wrong direction, we can be affected and I DO RESPOND.
I find and usher and go have a personal talk about asthma and clean air with
the offender.

I applaud the change.

How far we've come!
I remember when they used to allow smoking in the stands. A guy near us would
contstantly light up and subject the rest of us to his smoke.
It didn't bother me to allow smoking in the open areas of the concourses, but I
guess somebody decided that wasn't a good idea.

Smoking ban starts in Swamp this season

I reported earlier this week that the University of Florida would ban smoking
and other tobacco use throughout campus next July.
It looks like the Swamp is getting a head start.
Smoking will be banned in Ben Hill Griffin Stadium this football season,
according to Chip Howard, UF’s associate athletic director.
“In advance of the 2010 Healthy Gator tobacco free initiative the campus will
be instituting next year and in the interest of fan comfort, smoking will be
prohibited in all athletic facilities beginning this year,” he wrote in an
e-mail.
Violators are subject to ejection. There had previously been designated
smoking areas at the stadium.
Eight other Southeastern Conference schools ban smoking in their stadiums,
according to Howard.

Years or decades later, the virus can
reactivate and cause shingles. Anyone who has had chickenpox is at risk of
shingles. Shingles is associated with normal aging and with anything that
weakens the immune system such as certain medications, cancers, or
infections, but it can also occur in healthy children and younger persons.

I reread the research on shingles and chicken pox 5 or 6 years ago when my
grandson contracted chicken pox from my nephew who had shingles. By the
way, people who are vaccinated can still get chicken pox AND shingles, but
they are likely to have a milder case of either. I've been more inclined to
let my kids (and grandkids) get chicken pox so they'll have a lifelong
immunity to it, but that does carry the risk that they'll be more likely to
have shingles later.

At the annual football media day on Sunday, Bowden says the Seminoles are
rebuilt and ready to win another national championship. He has two years to
deliver before his successor-in-waiting, Jimbo Fisher, takes over in January
of 2011.

Bowden's 1993 and 1999 teams won national titles. The Seminoles narrowly
missed another half dozen between 1987 and 2000, often denied by rival
Miami.

The 79-year-old coach says he's still bothered by the effects of shingles on
the left side of his face. The virus frequently hits people who have had
chicken pox.

rebuilt and ready to win another national championship. He has two years to
deliver before his successor-in-waiting, Jimbo Fisher, takes over in January of
2011.

Bowden's 1993 and 1999 teams won national titles. The Seminoles narrowly
missed another half dozen between 1987 and 2000, often denied by rival Miami.

The 79-year-old coach says he's still bothered by the effects of shingles
on the left side of his face. The virus frequently hits people who have had
chicken pox.

Or maybe you would be comfortable enough relying on the National Foundation
for Infectious Diseases by reading this:

http://www.nfid.org/pdf/factsheets/varicellaadult.pdf

Pertinent excerpt:
Shingles, or herpes zoster, is a common illness that strikes about 1 million
Americans each year, more than half 60 years of age and older. Shingles is
caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox.
When people are first infected with the varicella-zoster virus, usually as
children, they get chickenpox. Years or decades later, the virus can
reactivate and cause shingles. Anyone who has had chickenpox is at risk of
shingles. Shingles is associated with normal aging and with anything that
weakens the immune system such as certain medications, cancers, or infections,
but it can also occur in healthy children and younger persons.
I reread the research on shingles and chicken pox 5 or 6 years ago when my
grandson contracted chicken pox from my nephew who had shingles.  By the way,
people who are vaccinated can still get chicken pox AND shingles, but they are
likely to have a milder case of either.  I've been more inclined to let my
kids (and grandkids) get chicken pox so they'll have a lifelong immunity to
it, but that does carry the risk that they'll be more likely to have shingles
later.

I am doing well. I am learning how to do things one-handed. I have been
planning a fishing trip to Alaska since early spring and I leave Thursday. I
was racking my brain trying to figure out how I might land a 100 lb.+ halibut
but I found a fishing harness that will let me fish with one arm. The doctor
wasn’t thrilled but he said I could go as long as I agreed to “supervise” if my
hand started hurting. I am not sure how the harness will work when we switch
to salmon, however.

In the list-of-the-month category, Gainesville was named the No. 10 small
city in “Next Cities: The 60 U.S. Hotspots for Young, Talented Workers” by Next
Generation Consulting of Madison, Wis.

The report ranks cities based on the priorities of 20- to 40-year-old workers
in knowledge-based jobs, looking at criteria such as the cost of living; job
opportunities; health and environment; culture and recreation; educational
opportunities; “walkability” and transportation; and diversity and safety.

The “Mighty Micros” list is topped by Fort Collins, Colo., followed by
Charleston, S.C.; Eugene, Ore.; Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Springfield, Ill.; Cary,
N.C.; Ann Arbor, Mich.; Sioux Falls, S.D.; Pueblo, Colo; and Gainesville.

Madison tops the list of “Midsize Magnets” and San Francisco the “Super
Cities.”

  For details, visit nextgenerationconsulting.com.

Next Generation recommends that companies locate in cities on the list to
improve the odds of hiring great employees.

I've been told that once you have an outbreak of Shingles, that they won't give
you the vaccine after that.

I can’t speak for Eddie, but even after I had shingles, the doctor would not
approve the vaccine for either me or my wife until we reached 60. We have a
few years to go.

Does it say you need to change primary physicians? If you had received your
Shingles vacine at age 60 you'd be fine.

Or maybe you would be comfortable enough relying on the National Foundation
for Infectious Diseases by reading this:

http://www.nfid.org/pdf/factsheets/varicellaadult.pdf

Pertinent excerpt:

Shingles, or herpes zoster, is a common illness that strikes about 1
million Americans each year, more than half 60 years of age and older. Shingles
is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox.

Cee

Rather depend on email/internet banter, call your local government
provided, tax-supported health department.

Actually, The quote is correct. Usually you have to have had chicken
pox. Anyone over 60 should seriously consider the vaccine.

[gatortalk] Gainesville restaurants

2009-08-10 Thread Dave Rice
Saving all the cut paste time to get to the point - I was at UF from 73 -
78 (under the 5-year plan) and recall a few great restaurants:

Sonny's Fat Boy BBQ - South of UF on 13th.

Tony Pat's - Italian just North of Sonny's

The aforementioned Primrose Inn - next to Nichol's Alley near The Great
Southern Music Hall

Manaro's - Italian east of town.

Capt. Louie's - seafood near campus on 13th

Joe's Deli - near campus, south on 13th

In Out Hamburgers - somewhere east of campus finally on Archer Rd.

It's late, but I'm hungry.

Go Gators!

2009-08-10 Thread Charlie
I'll add the following.

Art's Steak House. Had some sort challenge about eating a huge steak and
getting your name/picture on the wall.

Snuffy's. Just remember the burgers being good

Mac's Waffle Shop.

Louie's Hamburgers. Weird little burgers

Royal Castle out by the Interstate.

The original Sonny's on Waldo rd. Believe it was the 1st in the chain. At
some point all the meat was smoked at the Waldo rd location and delievered
to 13th st. The story at the time was that the city of Gainesville had an
ordinance against the smoke.
