RE: [gatortalk] New Gator Recycling Can

2010-08-25 Thread Keith Baldwin
There are some racetracks (Charlotte?) where you can buy condos to live in
during the year. Plus, you can just show up for the races in your
underwear.

If they can get an astronomical amount just for the skyboxes - imagine how
much it would be for a condo to live there

Keith,

You are going to hate this and pro bably not want to hear it. From my
experience, the stadiums always look locked up. If one starts walking around
the outer-concourse and trying all the entrance gates - you WILL find one open
We've done this at the Swamp, Michigan's stadium, Michigan State's stadium,
Penn State's Stadium, Purdue's stadium, Indiana's stadium. The only college
stadiums where I was denied - Minnesota's metrodome and scUM at Joe Robbie.
Moral to the story - I wished we could have talked before your trip. You would

The Havener Football Complex is normally open during the week. Like Woody says,
it's not open on game days - one reason is that some of the facilities in there
are used with the recruiting prospects on campus for their official visits.

The lobby area has the Heisman trophies, NC trophies, as well as a lot of other
cool Gator football memorabilia on display.

Commentary: Kirk Herbstreit dreams of being the Dick Vitale of college
football

Who is the face of college football? Like every other sweeping question in
sports today, that is for ESPN to decide.

In this case, the network has chosen well, plucking Kirk Herbstreit from a
long ago audition tape and systematically positioning the former Ohio State
quarterback for decades of racing around the country as an eyewitness, an
ambassador, a mirror of the game.

All the guy's missing is a catchphrase or two and - Whoa, Nelly! - we may be
thinking of him in 20 years the way we do of Keith Jackson.

How did it happen? Well, other than the fact that Herbstreit is very smooth
and natural on camera and knows the game instinctively, there is his age,
41, and his passion for the chaos and the fun of a Saturday stadium on red
alert, which should be good for another 41 years.

As for ESPN's role in setting the American weekend agenda, they and the
parent ABC network own the rights to the BCS bowls and the national
championship game, plus a couple of prime-time Saturday showcase games per
week, plus a new 15-year deal with the almighty SEC.

That last one with Div. I's glamour conference goes for $2.25 billion all by
itself, a pretty fair indicator of how important it was for Herbstreit to
find a space on this runaway broadcast locomotive, even if it was originally
the caboose.

I was doing local radio (in Columbus, Ohio) and I put this little tape
together, never thinking I would hear anything back, said Herbstreit, who
was in West Palm Beach Monday for a waterfront rally to kick off the high
school football season and highlight the area's best players. I went in for
an audition (at ESPN) back in 1995 and, other than being interviewed in the
locker room after games, I had never been on that side of the camera.

Long story short, Herbstreit flew to ESPN headquarters in Connecticut,
logged three minutes of play-by-play simulation work behind a SportsCenter
desk and headed home for seven months of silence from the network honchos.
When the phone finally rang, it was to offer a job as sideline reporter.
Herbstreit jumped at it enthusiastically, just as he did the College GameDay
gig that came along the following year.

My goal when I started on GameDay was to one day be looked at in the same
way that Dick Vitale is looked at in college basketball, Herbstreit said.

Actually, that's a little too Lee Corso for my taste. With all the clowning
that goes on at ESPN, all the driving of public opinion on which teams are
truly worthy on a minute-by-minute basis, it might be better for Herbstreit
to stay focused on the facts, no matter who likes it. That's how his dad,
former Ohio State assistant coach Jim Herbstreit, always operated, and so
did the Buckeyes' ultimate boss, Woody Hayes.

I have memories of being 6 or 7 and going into the Ohio State locker room
after a game and putting on Archie Griffin's helmet, Herbstreit said. I
remember sitting on Woody Hayes' lap and him looking down and it was like
God was looking and talking to me when Woody Hayes talked. I was just in awe
of that whole setting.

Now don't get mad about Herbstreit's choice of deities. He was born into a
specific college football culture but has grown to appreciate them all. When
Miami heads to Ohio State on Sept. 11, for instance, Herbstreit won't be
calling for a Buckeyes blowout, the way his neighbors in Columbus would want
it.

These two teams met not only in 2002, which everyone remembers, but also in
1999, at East Rutherford, Herbstreit said. It was when Butch Davis was
trying to get Miami up and out of probation and they had an opportunity in
that Kickoff Classic to show America that the 'U' was back. They took
advantage of it and won the game (23-12).

I feel like Miami's on the verge of some great, great times and I think
they need a game like Ohio State to show the country, and to show
themselves, where they are. They're not going to have a bigger opportunity
in any other game they play this year ... If they play up to

11, for instance, Herbstreit won't be
calling for a Buckeyes blowout, the way his neighbors in Columbus would want
 it.

These two teams met not only in 2002, which everyone remembers, but also
in 1999, at East Rutherford, Herbstreit said.

There are some racetracks (Charlotte?) where you can buy condos to live in
during the year. Plus, you can just show up for the races in your
underwear.

If they can get an astronomical amount just for the skyboxes - imagine how
much it would be for a condo to live there

Trey Burton arrived in Gainesville as a quarterback back in January.

Since then, he's evolved into, well, a football player — and a potential
playmaker, a guy willing to play any and all positions to get on the field
and help Florida win football games.

 He's a quarterback. He's a Wildcat quarterback. He's a short-yardage
runner. He's lining up as a slot receiver. He's a tight end.

He's whatever the coaches ask him to be.

He's the total ballplayer, UF offensive coordinator Steve Addazio said
Tuesday. He lines up. He's taking snaps, direct runs, playing that
hip/fullback/flexed-out guy (that Aaron Hernandez played last season). He's
powerful, he's smart, he's a really good athlete. He's got great hands.
That's been really fun to watch over the last five or six days.

He's just like, 'Hey, I want to do whatever it takes to help this team and
get on that football field.' He does everything. He's a fun guy to be
 around.

Burton entered preseason camp as the No. 2 quarterback. But his role has
expanded significantly over the past week or so. He may or may not still be
the No. 2 quarterback (he's battling fellow true freshman Tyler Murphy), but
his chances of contributing somewhere on offense this season seem to improve
 with each practice.

Trey Burton has had a great week, Addazio said. He makes plays in a lot
of different positions. It's really fun to watch him develop right now. That
guy is playing all over the field making plays. He's playing it all. He's
 aplaymaker. So, that's really cool.

He's really done a great job. He's very versatile. Hernandez was very
versatile. Trey is maybe slightly different. He can do a lot of things. It's
 pretty amazing, really.

Addazio said he still doesn't know who the No. 2 quarterback is between
Burton and Murphy. Tight end Jordan Reed, a former quarterback, also remains
 an option,Addazio said.

 *Parks returns*

After missing most of training camp due to a wrist procedure, redshirt
freshman tight end Desmond Parks returned to practice, tight ends coach
 Brian White said.

Parks will go five days before wearing full pads as part of his acclimation
 process, but participated some.

He looks good in shorts, White said.

In other injury news, Addazio said he didn't know the seriousness or type
of knee injury sophomore offensive tackle Xavier Nixon suffered. He also
said it was too early to tell ifredshirt sophomore tackle Matt Patchan
(wrist) will play in Florida's opener. Patchan and Nixon are battling at
left tackle, but Addazio said he's prepared if neither play.

There are plenty of combinations, he said.

Wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni said senior wide receiver Justin Williams
(shoulder) is still in a sling and missed practice Tuesday, but the injury
isn't considered serious and he's expected back in a couple of days.

 *Christian moves around*

With redshirt junior fullback Steve Wilks out for a few weeks (back
surgery), White said redshirt sophomore T.J. Pridemore and freshman tight
end Gerald Christian are getting reps at fullback.

White said Christian is serving as a tight end/H-back and has really
improved since spring, especially with his blocking.

He's getting better, but crosstraining a young athlete is never easy,
 White said.

 *Quotable*

Senior center Mike Pouncey on the freshmen coming in overconfident:
Everybody needs to come in with that type of attitude, but at the end of
the day the freshmen need to shut their mouths and come play. They haven't
done nothing on Saturday and most of the fans don't even know who they are.

Commentary: Kirk Herbstreit dreams of being the Dick Vitale of college
football

Who is the face of college football? Like every other sweeping question
in sports today, that is for ESPN to decide.

In this case, the network has chosen well, plucking Kirk Herbstreit from
a long ago audition tape and systematically positioning the former Ohio
State quarterback for decades of racing around the country as an
eyewitness, an ambassador, a mirror of the game.

All the guy's missing is a catchphrase or two and - Whoa, Nelly! - we
may be thinking of him in 20 years the way we do of Keith Jackson.

How did it happen? Well, other than the fact that Herbstreit is very
smooth and natural on camera and knows the game instinctively, there is
his age, 41, and his passion for the chaos and the fun of a Saturday
stadium on red alert, which should be good for another 41 years.

As for ESPN's role in setting the American weekend agenda, they and the
parent ABC network own the rights to the BCS bowls and the national
championship game, plus a couple of prime-time Saturday showcase games
per week, plus a new 15-year deal with the almighty SEC.

That last one with Div. I's glamour conference goes for $2.25 billion
all by itself, a pretty fair indicator of how important it was for
Herbstreit to find a space on this runaway broadcast locomotive, even if
it was originally the caboose.

I was doing local radio (in Columbus, Ohio) and I put this little tape
together, never thinking I would hear anything back, said Herbstreit,
who was in West Palm Beach Monday for a waterfront rally to kick off the
high school football season and highlight the area's best players. I
went in for an audition (at ESPN) back in 1995 and, other than being
interviewed in the locker room after games, I had never been on that
side of the camera.

Long story short, Herbstreit flew to ESPN headquarters in Connecticut,
logged three minutes of play-by-play simulation work behind a
SportsCenter desk and headed home for seven months of silence from the
network honchos. When the phone finally rang, it was to offer a job as
sideline reporter. Herbstreit jumped at it enthusiastically, just as he
did the College GameDay gig that came along the following year.

My goal when I started on GameDay was to one day be looked at in the
same way that Dick Vitale is looked at in college basketball,
Herbstreit said.

Actually, that's a little too Lee Corso for my taste. With all the
clowning that goes on at ESPN, all the driving of public opinion on
which teams are truly worthy on a minute-by-minute basis, it might be
better for Herbstreit to stay focused on the facts, no matter who likes
it. That's how his dad, former Ohio State assistant coach Jim
Herbstreit, always operated, and so did the Buckeyes' ultimate boss,
Woody Hayes.

I have memories of being 6 or 7 and going into the Ohio State locker
room after a game and putting on Archie Griffin's helmet, Herbstreit
said. I remember sitting on Woody Hayes' lap and him looking down and
it was like God was looking and talking to me when Woody Hayes talked. I

aplaymaker. So, that's really cool.

He's really done a great job. He's very versatile. Hernandez was very
versatile. Trey is maybe slightly different. He can do a lot of things. It's
pretty amazing, really.

Addazio said he still doesn't know who the No. 2 quarterback is between
Burton and Murphy. Tight end Jordan Reed, a former quarterback, also remains
an option,Addazio said.

Parks returns

After missing most of training camp due to a wrist procedure, redshirt
freshman tight end Desmond Parks returned to practice, tight ends coach
Brian White said.

Parks will go five days before wearing full pads as part of his acclimation
process, but participated some.

He looks good in shorts, White said.

In other injury news, Addazio said he didn't know the seriousness or type of
knee injury sophomore offensive tackle Xavier Nixon suffered. He also said
it was too early to tell ifredshirt sophomore tackle Matt Patchan (wrist)
will play in Florida's opener. Patchan and Nixon are battling at left
tackle, but Addazio said he's prepared if neither play.

There are plenty of combinations, he said.

Wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni said senior wide receiver Justin Williams
(shoulder) is still in a sling and missed practice Tuesday, but the injury
isn't considered serious and he's expected back in a couple of days.

Christian moves around

With redshirt junior fullback Steve Wilks out for a few weeks (back
surgery), White said redshirt sophomore T.J. Pridemore and freshman tight
end Gerald Christian are getting reps at fullback.

White said Christian is serving as a tight end/H-back and has really
improved since spring, especially with his blocking.

He's getting better, but crosstraining a young athlete is never easy,
White said.

He's

Wasn't Barbara Bach John Matuszak's girl friend in the movie?

Ringo kidnapped her and she was his for awhile then John took her back.

Isn't that the way it played?

There are some racetracks (Charlotte?) where you can buy condos to live in
during the year.  Plus, you can just show up for the races in your
underwear.

If they can get an astronomical amount just for the skyboxes - imagine how
much it would be for a condo to live there

Actually, UF is fairly open.  We drive by football practice fields often and
you
can see into them.  Meyers just removed the people from direct contact with
players.  There are screens up, but you can see through them and there are many
openings.  They also don't go to the ground, so if you don't mind laying under

I thought it was just jealousy.  All I did was develop a plan to live in

Commentary: Kirk Herbstreit dreams of being the Dick Vitale of college football

Who is the face of college football? Like every other sweeping question in
sports today, that is for ESPN to decide.
In this case, the network has chosen well, plucking Kirk Herbstreit from a long
ago audition tape and systematically positioning the former Ohio State
quarterback for decades of racing around the country as an eyewitness, an
ambassador, a mirror of the game.
All the guy's missing is a catchphrase or two and - Whoa, Nelly! - we may be
thinking of him in 20 years the way we do of Keith Jackson.
How did it happen? Well, other than the fact that Herbstreit is very smooth and
natural on camera and knows the game instinctively, there is his age, 41, and
his passion for the chaos and the fun of a Saturday stadium on red alert, which
should be good for another 41 years.
As for ESPN's role in setting the American weekend agenda, they and the parent
ABC network own the rights to the BCS bowls and the national championship game,
plus a couple of prime-time Saturday showcase games per week, plus a new
15-year
deal with the almighty SEC.
That last one with Div. I's glamour conference goes for $2.25 billion all by
itself, a pretty fair indicator of how important it was for Herbstreit to find
a
space on this runaway broadcast locomotive, even if it was originally the
caboose.
I was doing local radio (in Columbus, Ohio) and I put this little tape
together, never thinking I would hear anything back, said Herbstreit, who was
in West Palm Beach Monday for a waterfront rally to kick off the high school
football season and highlight the area's best players. I went in for an
audition (at ESPN) back in 1995 and, other than being interviewed in the locker
room after games, I had never been on that side of the camera.
Long story short, Herbstreit flew to ESPN headquarters in Connecticut, logged
three minutes of play-by-play simulation work behind a SportsCenter desk and
headed home for seven months of silence from the network honchos. When the
phone
finally rang, it was to offer a job as sideline reporter. Herbstreit jumped at
it enthusiastically, just as he did the College GameDay gig that came along the
following year.
My goal when I started on GameDay was to one day be looked at in the same way
that Dick Vitale is looked at in college basketball, Herbstreit said.
Actually, that's a little too Lee Corso for my taste. With all the clowning
that
goes on at ESPN, all the driving of public opinion on which teams are truly
worthy on a minute-by-minute basis, it might be better for Herbstreit to stay
focused on the facts, no matter who likes it. That's how his dad, former Ohio
State assistant coach Jim Herbstreit, always operated, and so did the Buckeyes'
ultimate boss, Woody Hayes.
I have memories of being 6 or 7 and going into the Ohio State locker room
after
a game and putting on Archie Griffin's helmet, Herbstreit said. I remember
sitting on Woody Hayes' lap and him looking down and it was like God was
looking
and talking to me when Woody Hayes talked. I was just in awe of that whole
setting.
Now don't get mad about Herbstreit's choice of deities. He was born into a
specific college football culture but has grown to appreciate

The football museum/trophy room is open during the week. I have experienced
it being open on Saturday on a basketball game day, but I don't know if it's
always open on Saturdays. It is not open on football game days, which I

There's always next year when after they post another national
 championship.

There are suppose to be like a Gator Football museum or trophy room or
 something. Is that normally open?

 Keith,

You are going to hate this and pro bably not want to hear it. From my
experience, the stadiums always look locked up. If one starts walking
 around
the outer-concourse and trying all the entrance gates - you WILL find one
open We've done this at the Swamp, Michigan's stadium, Michigan State's
stadium, Penn State's Stadium, Purdue's stadium, Indiana's stadium. The
 only
college stadiums where I was denied - Minnesota's metrodome and scUM at
 Joe Robbie.
Moral to the story - I wished we could have talked before your trip. You
would have enjoyed some on the field picts with your family.

Actually, Jim Fixx isn't anymore, unfortunately.

He turned the country onto running, back in the Eighties, but dropped dead by
the side of a road during a run. Heart attack.

A lot of people -- most of whom were looking to excuse or rationalize their own
lack of activity -- took a kind of perverse pleasure in not just his death, but
how he died.

Fixx obviously exercised a great deal, but according to what I read, he thought
exercise alone was sufficient to ensure a healthy life. An autopsy reportedly
revealed that his coronory arteries had blockage of 95, 85, and 50 percent.

So, all I am saying to Oliver (who I assume was joking anyway about eating all
the dessert you want if you run) is: I love your sense of humor and reading
your posts every day, and hope to keep reading them for years to come. Take
care of yourself and be selective with what you eat. Running alone doesn't
guarantee anything.

The hyper-involved parents of today's college students have been called
helicopter or velcro parents. Whatever they're called, they sure sound
annoying.

A recent New York Times story
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/23/education/23college.html?_r=1 reports
on how colleges are dealing with parents who won't let go on move-in day.
Morehouse College in Atlanta has instituted a formal parting ceremony to
separate doting parents from their freshman children. Other colleges include
blunt language in their drop-off schedules specifying the hour for goodbyes.

It's easy for students to point to this notation and say, 'Hey, Mom, I
think you're supposed to be gone now,' Thomas Dunne, Princeton University's
associate dean of undergraduates, told the paper. It's obviously a hard
conversation for students to have with parents.

The over-parenting issue goes beyond move-in day. Some suggest that extreme
parental involvement is harming students. Time Magazine reported
http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1940395,00.html that some
college deans describe freshmen as crispies, who arrived at college
already burned out, and teacups, who are ready to break at the tiniest
stress.

University of Florida Dean of Students Jen Day Shaw said in an e-mail that
the university's philosophy is that parent and family involvement is a good
thing. With UF's challenging academic environment, she said, students value
support from their families.

For the very few family members who try to speak for the student without
the student's involvement, we directly involve the student in the
conversation, she said.

So what do you think? Are involved parents a good thing or are they stunting
the development of students? Post your comments below.

Yes, Ken, I was joking. I actually eat pretty healthy most of the time. I
do eat my share of desserts though, just not every day.
Running 30 miles a week, or more, is really a good way to keep the weight
off. My legs get a little sore, but I feel pretty healthy/good most of the
time.
Over-training can be brutal. I've had injuries that have kept me off the
road for up to 6 months. They've all been caused by worn out shoes, adding
too much mileage at one time or some other little preventable cause.
Running is a great sport though, I recommend it to anyone. Jim Fixx
notwithstanding.

Ah, the age of the Internet, web message boards and talk radio.

Rumors circulated Wednesday morning that highly rated Florida defensive
linemen Dominique Easley and Ronald Powell had missed practice Tuesday and
left the team because they were unhappy with the way they were treated by
the older players.

Maybe it happened or maybe it didn't.

What did happen Wednesday was that Powell and Easley were both at practice.
Powell even walked to the afternoon drills with a smile on his face.

Marty Liquori
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Medal record
Men's Athletics
Competitor for the  United States
Pan American Games
Gold 1971 Cali 1500 metres
Martin (Marty) Liquori (born 11 September 1949) is an American middle
distance
athlete.
Liquori first rose to fame when he became the third American high schooler to
break the four-minute mile by running a 3:59.8 in 1967, three years after Jim
Ryun first did it.
He grew up in Cedar Grove, New Jersey and attended Essex Catholic High
School.[1] After high school, Liquori enrolled at Villanova University. There
he
was coached by the legendary Jumbo Elliott.
Liquori made the U.S. Olympic team in 1968 as a nineteen-year-old freshman. He
reached the finals of the 1,500 meter run but suffered a stress fracture and
finished 12th. He was the youngest person ever to compete in the final.
In 1969, he finished second to Ryun in the NCAA indoor mile then won the NCAA
and AAU outdoor mile championships by turning the tables on Ryun and beating
him. He repeated the AAU outdoor in 1970 and had his best year in 1971, winning
the NCAA and AAU outdoor titles, and a gold medal in the 1,500 m at the
Pan-American Games. In 1969 and 1971 he was ranked number 1 in the world for
1500 meters/mile. In 1977 he was ranked number 1 in 5000 meters and set a US
record of 13:15.1 while finishing second to Miruts Yifter in the inaugural
World
Cup.
On May 16, 1971, Liquori lowered his personal best to 3:54.6 in the Dream Mile
in Philadelphia and beat Ryun by a few steps.
But Liquori was injured later that year. He didn't return to competition until
1973. In 1975 he ran a personal best 3:52.2 in the mile, finishing second to
Filbert Bayi (who broke Ryun's world record in that race by 0.1 second with a
3:51.0), and set a United States record of 8:17.12 in the 2 mile. Liquori
retired from competitive distance running in 1980.
He has written an autobiography, On The Run , Guide to the Elite Runner and
Home Gym Workout. He was a founder of The Athlete Attic Footwear chain in
1971.
Liquori lives in Gainesville, Florida. He does commentary for NBC at the
Olympics and at various track and triathlon events around the country. Liquori
was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), which is now in
remission. He picked up the guitar after a 35-year hiatus and is currently a
professional jazz guitarist and now performs Monday and Thursday nights with
various ensembles at Leonardo's 706, a Gainesville restaurant.

During Liquori's active years as a runner, I served as a vulunteer to the
Florida Relays, UF's premier annual track meet that has high school, college
and
AAU level competition.  I was a finish judge and saw Jim Ryun, Liquori and
other
great runners of the time make some of their best times.
