Re: [brlug-general] Professional Data Recovery in BR or NO?

2013-08-09 Thread Ray DeJean
No, no Linux. I'm thinking about switching to a freenas file server. When I
do, will probably switch from backblaze to crash plan. They don't support
FreeBSD, but have info on the blog for running the Linux client on FreeBSD.

2013-08-09 Thread mat branyon
Not that I have seen, or affected me. In all reality, unless your changes
are huge, they can trickle in, since bittorrent manages your transfers in
chunks of data. The initial sync took a little while since it was done
remotely. It was able to discover when both devices were on the same
network.

Also, I live outside of Denver, with a small local ISP with fairly open
policies.

Considering buying a dash cam anyway. Would that contribute to Russian-ness?
Can I put that on a resumé? "Expected salary: $400k, I have a dashcam."

working fine.
In fact, my cost from slicehost to rackspace was cut in half because of the
difference in
rackspace's pricing model. So, i went from $20/month to $11 or so.
But, that slice runs an older Gentoo and i can't seem to get it to upgrade with
an emerge.
To much stuff fails, i fought it for a while but gave up.
Then I found this site:
https://www.digitalocean.com/pricing

For the same price i'm currently paying, $10/mo. I can triple my current specs.
or for half the price, i can double my specs. So, for $10/mo. i've created a
CentOS 6.4 "droplet". 1GBmem. 1 CPU, 30GB SSD Disk with 2TB transfer.
My current slice is 256m, 10gb, 1TB, 4xcpu.

So far so good. There are less OS choices than rackspace, but enough options.
If I build a new VM at rackspace, it would be $16/mo. Rackspace doesn't have
the VM choice that
I currently have.

I can't speak for Kroll, but I had a drive that DriveSavers couldn't help,
and there was no fee, not even return shipping.

(I had popped the case to see if I could free the platters before trying
the hundreds-of-dollars option)

Has anyone here checked out btsync?

I have btsync installed on my phone. Going to be installing it on my server
here soon. Works great, all your data is on your own machines, no added
cost, encrypted transmission, and incremental saves using bittorrent.

I think the student is getting estimates now with Kroll and Drivesavers. I will

I did not realize that with crash plan you can back up to other crash plan

the few files I did try were ok. $5/month to backup unlimited data is a
pretty sweet deal.
Also, their client is neat. I'm currently backing up my Mother-in-laws and

[brlug-general] Digital Ocean

2013-08-09 Thread Brad Bendily
So, years ago I created a "slice" at Slicehost to run my personal website
and
have root on a box somewhere. A few years ago, Rackspace bought Slicehost
and then about
a year ago my VM was moved into the Rackspace managed site. Which has been
working fine.
In fact, my cost from slicehost to rackspace was cut in half because of the
difference in
rackspace's pricing model. So, i went from $20/month to $11 or so.
But, that slice runs an older Gentoo and i can't seem to get it to upgrade
with an emerge.
To much stuff fails, i fought it for a while but gave up.
Then I found this site:
https://www.digitalocean.com/pricing

For the same price i'm currently paying, $10/mo. I can triple my current
specs. or for half the price, i can double my specs. So, for $10/mo. i've
created a CentOS 6.4 "droplet". 1GBmem. 1 CPU, 30GB SSD Disk with 2TB
transfer.
My current slice is 256m, 10gb, 1TB, 4xcpu.

So far so good. There are less OS choices than rackspace, but enough
options.
If I build a new VM at rackspace, it would be $16/mo. Rackspace doesn't
have the VM choice that
I currently have.

If you're interested, please use this code:

Re: [brlug-general] Professional Data Recovery in BR or NO?

2013-08-09 Thread Doyle Van Zandt
 I know no one locally.

If the drive is "clicking," and unreadable, they will need a company with
clean room facilities. The process is so straightforward now there are
probably 100 competent companies online.

Having said that, I have used Ontrack (now Kroll Ontrack) off and on for
over 20 years for server drive data recovery. The last time was 5-6 years
ago. They are generally good, but expensive.

On their website, there is a Chat facility so you can get a good idea what
you are up against without wasting a lot of time with email/phone calls.
Also, they have a lot of information about the data recovery process that
is useful even if a different service is used.

There is an opportunity to go to a lower priced company using less
sophisticated methods, but the student should make sure what is done to the
drive is non-destructive (all work done on a copy) so they can try another
place if necessary.

If the person has an idea what filenames and file type(s) need to be
recovered, there is a greater chance of recovery and usually a reduction in
price. For example, if the only files worth recovering are SAS data
files, they will ignore OS and other data files and only recover .s* files.

My success rate in getting back what I wanted is around 67%.

My wife is a photographer, so I know it happens a lot more than you'd think
that the CF card with all your wedding pictures dies as soon as the wedding is
over. Pro cameras have dual CF slots to prevent this make sure your
photographer's camera does.

Consensus is there's no one trustworthy that's local. If you find one, let me
know. But it will have to be sent off. And how "critical" the data is is
normally determined by the cost of this service, as it's not cheap. I have no
personal experience with them (all our cameras have dual slots), but
DriveSavers is a company that gets recommended a lot.

And, use Git, otherwise some FBI guy will think you're doing something to
subvert something.
