I can't find all the source for the release. AFAICT the only way to
recreate all the release artifacts would be from the svn tag but thats
not enough as an ASF release must include a source release. If I've
just missed it and all the source is there somewhere then could you
provide the link?

Two other comments are:

There is no incubation DISCLAIMER file in any of the release artifacts
which is required as per
http://incubator.apache.org/incubation/Incubation_Policy.html#Releases.
That needs to be present either as a separate file next to the
LICENSE/NOTICE files or the text may be included in the top level
README, for an example see:
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/kato/tags/apache-kato-M1-incubating/DISCLAIMER.txt
Looking back now we seem to be missing this in other releases recently
too so perhaps this could be fixed on the next release if there isn't
a new RC needed for anything else.

I don't think the NOTICE file needs those extra comments about
SoftHashMap and Spring, and perhaps the SoftHashMap comments would be
better in the LICENSE file. There has been a lot of confusion about
what should go in the NOTICE file and extra info is far better than
missing info so up to the project what if anything to do about this.

Other than that it looks good, the missing source is a problem though
so sorry but my vote is -1 until that is cleared up.

[ANNOUNCE] Apache Aries 0.1-incubating

2010-05-26 Thread Jeremy Hughes
Hi,

The Apache Aries community is pleased to announce the Apache Aries
0.1-incubating release. This is the first release of Apache Aries.

The Aries project delivers a set of pluggable Java components enabling
an enterprise OSGi application programming model. This includes
implementations and extensions of application-focused specifications
defined by the OSGi Alliance Enterprise Expert Group (EEG) and an
assembly format for multi-bundle applications, for deployment to a
variety of OSGi based runtimes.

You can find the release download linked from the home page:
http://incubator.apache.org/aries

Please report any issues via JIRA: http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/ARIES

A BIG thank you to all the patches, and checkins from our
contributors. Thanks too to our mentors for helping us get through our
first release.

Cheers,
Jeremy

All the artifacts have sources and javadocs in the same "directories".

The staging site appeared to be part of the vote as it was not
specifically excluded.

Regardless, I think it's important that when an Incubator project
wants to do a release, consumers need to be fully aware that it is not
a normal ASF release. Seems to me that this is why the branding
guidelines are there.

I agree that there are some website issues that have no bearing on a release.

However IMO ensuring that Incubator projects are clearly identified as
such is fundamental to allowing releases from Incubator projects.

AIUI all ASF releases MUST have _buildable_ source. The source jars
included in those directories are not buildable. The idea behind this
is that the ASF deals with source code and releases are of source
packages that enable anyone to go tinker with that source, but you
can't do so much useful tinkering if you can't build the source. See
http://www.apache.org/dev/release.html#what-must-every-release-contain
and various emails that fly around on other mailing lists.

I believe the latest Maven release plugin and Apache parent pom.xml
will create the correct packages now. You probably could reconstruct a
buildable source from whats in the Maven repo and if this was a small
release like a single Maven plugin or something it could have been
argued that this was ok and could just be updated to the new Maven
release for next release, but this is something like 20 modules so to
recreate it would be quite a job - working out and recreating the
correct directory structure, unzip all the source jars into the
correct place, download all the pom.xml's and rename them and put them
in the right place etc.

Or anyone leap in here and explain i've misunderstood the policy.

While I haven't looked at what Shiro has done, your
explanation of the relevance of a buildable source
package sounds fine.

I think you've put it well.

AIUI releases of Maven projects consist of two sets of artifacts:

1) Those that are released via the mirroring system.
These consist of a single source archive (usually in tar.gz and .zip
format, but with the same contents) plus sigs and hashes. These
should agree with SVN.

Usually there are one or more binary archives as well.

This is the primary release mechanism for all ASF software.

2) The Maven artifacts which are often split into mutiple archives, as here.
Maven releases are very common, but are not required (and may not
always be appropriate).

In this case AFAICT the mirrored artifacts (1) are completely missing.

This was a mistake - it probably should have been excluded. AFAICT,
staging sites are _not_ considered release artifacts because they're
never shipped/distributed. It is there for reference only.

We reference the Incubator in a lot of places on the site. And we'll
work on making that more prevalent as soon as possible, but as I
understand it, this is not considered release criteria. Until it is,
it doesn't seem that a release should be prohibited.

The only thing that should prevent a release IMO would be violations
of _concrete_ release criteria. Saying that "The Incubator isn't
mentioned in a prevalent area of the website", while maybe true, is a
nebulous statement - it is purely based on interpretation.

I think it's fine to have branding as release criteria, but it needs
to be explicit so we can know exactly what the problem is and how to
fix it (e.g. "Incubator must be linked to from the page graphic
header" or "Must be linked as a root-level navigation element in the
site's nav bar", etc). Until that happens, it is unfair to prevent a
release based on personal interpretation when all other criteria have
been met.

If anything, I would see it as a pre-release criterion

Sure that's precisely what

http://incubator.apache.org/guides/branding.html
in particular
http://incubator.apache.org/guides/branding.html#disclaimers

is all about.

This is very similar to Ant Elder's point about the missing
disclaimers in the release materials.

It's a bit confusing to have two copies of the N&L files in the root
of the archive:

LICENSE and LICENSE.txt have the same content.

NOTICE and NOTICE.txt have significantly different content.

LICENSE and NOTICE are not in SVN as far as I can tell, so where do
they come from?

It would be helpful to include a pointer to the KEYS file (eventually
found it at the root of SVN).

The ones in our SVN are redundant. LICENSE and NOTICE come via the
remote-resources-plugin configuration in Apache parent pom, see
http://repo2.maven.org/maven2/org/apache/apache/7/apache-7.pom

KEYS file should always be at the root of the svn right? But I do
apologize, should have included a link to it in the voting post.

AIUI they are needed in SVN as well.

The remote-resources plugin has only generated a rudimentary NOTICE
file, which does not seem to cover all the contributions. What about
the SpringSource code? Does that not need a mention?

Not necessarily.

It may be in a site module which is used to maintain
www.apache.org/dist/project files (e.g. HEADER and README html files).
This is because it must be present in the dist/ directory, so it makes
it convenient to store it alongside HEADER and README.

Have a look at the subdirectories under:

http://www.apache.org/dist/incubator/

and you will see that there is a KEYS file for each (apart from one or
two that don't have any files in them yet).

This looks correct to me. The way it's setup with the apache parent
pom is that the root module will have the fully buildable source, all
the individual modules still have their source and jdocs for ide
integration.
